All that glitter~

OK~ Am I the only Mom that tossed out the glitter for my boys for Craft projects when they were young? The drawing card for me:  Blaine was maybe 4 at the time.  He came running up to me after Sunday School and I was wearing my nice, new, black wool winter coat.  I really liked that coat, up until that moment.
He was running and saying, "Mommy, mommy, look what I made?"  Well, I reached down, not thinking to look at what he made, and swept him up into my arms.  Poor choice!  His glitter project was, of course, FRESH!  He pasted his project right onto the upper left hand corner of my new, beautiful winter coat.  The glue was fresh, the glitter was abundant- I let it dry and left it there for several years.  It kind of looked like a star, not sure if that's what it was, but that's how it looked on my winter coat.

Any other Mom's worn their kids' craft projects for a few years? Oh yeah, went home and threw out all of the glitter for any future craft projects!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

I think I'll keep this guy around!

OK~ Many of you have met Skipper in person or have read about him.  Either way, you probably feel like you know him.  He's currently laying down (yes, he does rest) on the floor behind my chair.  He has done his share of damage in his 2 years and 2 months of life.  He has harassed too many of my cats (and still does).  I really have grown to like him- and the reasons are:

  • He doesn't chase the mail lady anymore (just not as often), the treats she tosses him must not be to his satisfaction.
  • He keeps my legs warm while he lays on them.
  • He actually comes, well most of the time, when he is called.
  • Blaine took him for a car ride for a walk in the park.  When they left the yard Skipper was hopping all over the car.  He made me smile (I like that).
  • It has been more than three days since we have had a carcass hauled up by the doors to the house. Thank God~ no deer head this year!
I really wondered about him a few months ago.  But you know, Skipper~ I really do like you and hope we have you around for many more years to come!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Who is that?

OK~ I was surfing through old pics on the computer today.  I believe this was birthday #3!  These binoculars were a hit.  This little guy is now 19 years old and they were used for several years to come. You just looked through them, that was it. Nothing fancy, just simple binoculars that this little guy over-used!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Umm..technology at its finest~

OK~ Todd and I are in the car, on the way to the YMCA.  This is how the conversation goes-

Me:  Did you see that so and so, tadadatadatada

Me:  Maybe we could go here and so forth.

Me:  Wonder when Garrett will call?

Me:  Which machine are you going to use first?

Get the picture?  I'm talking to myself.  My husband is sitting next to me, in the front seat of the car........I keep babbling while driving, and I'm obviously looking for some conversation.  He is very comfy in the passenger seat with music blaring through the ear plugs, which are sitting comfy in his ears.  I really don't know if I have a chance with any successful communication in this house.  From the iphones, ipods, and now to the mp3 players...Where does all of this stop?  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

USPS to possibly stop Saturday delivery

OK~ It is in the news again today.  The USPS is considering dropping Saturday mail service.  This has been circulating through many different news sources for quite some time now.  In all reality, we do not receive near the amount of mail through the USPS that we did five years ago.  With so many transactions being completed on-line and so many people signing up for NO JUNK MAIL, Saturday mail is probably no longer needed.  Both of these things are kind of a catch twenty two-  The biggest problem, jobs are lost.

If you think about it, our society itself has taken away many jobs due to the advancements in the world of technology.  I don't know about you, but I do enjoy many of the technological advancements that have been made.  Our world is ever changing and it scares me to think of where things will be 10 years from today!  My 19 & 14 year old do not remember what it is like to not have a computer in the house. Those of you that have younger kids, imagine the changes they will experience during their lifetime~ I don't know if I like all of these changes, but- I'll keep trekking on- sure beats the alternative!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

OK, We had a wonderful time in the land of Disney in March 2009~ two of my favorite (of many) creations that were placed throughout EPCOT!  It is truly amazing how the magic can shine through flowers, greenery and all things garden related!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

What's the hurry?

OK~ Just returned from a short trip up town.  My personal thoughts to other drivers:

  • Do Not Text While Driving
  • Use your turn signal
  • Do Not tail gate me (I'm really tired of this)
  • The speed limit is 55 mph for a reason
Is it that everyone is in such a hurry to get from Point A to Point B, that we have thrown all common courtesy out while driving in 2010? I do recall when our oldest son was driving with his permit, that he and I had a discussion about traveling 55 mph.  Low and behold, right after that little conversation, a person that obviously had no respect for others, passed us and showed us the middle finger! Maybe I'm old fashioned, just a 43 year old lady trying to be a good role model for my teenagers while driving.  I do know that my 14 year old son is watching all of my moves.  It's a given, teens watch and do practice what they see!  People, if we don't slow down a get a grip~ we are not gonna be around to enjoy life.  Just my thoughts as I was cruising down the highway- and this is Iowa folks, not a big city- just a two lane highway!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

All of this Social Networking.....Ummmmmm

OK~ I'm thinking how my world has changed over the past year due to this thing we call social networking.  I have met so many fabulous people, that I don't even know where to start.  All because of Facebook and Twitter I have had some wonderful new doorways open.  As the saying goes, "One door closes, another one opens."
All because of Facebook I was able to get a group of my Elementary classmates together and host a little picnic last Summer.  Talk about a fun time!  If you have ever though of doing something like this-- do it!  You will not regret it!  And thanks to Twitter, I am writing!  Writing has always been a passion of mine, but in 2006-2007 when I was forced to sit home and stare at the walls was when I really realized- "Hey, I think I should pursue this!"  As you can tell, time has passed.
Thanks to a little over two years of working part time as a designer in a local family owned business, I was able to expand my vocabulary.  Just a little over a couple years ago, I probably could not have written about flooring, designing, remodeling, etc....Amazing where the road of life takes us, isn't it?  God truly works in mysterious ways, doesn't he?  As you can tell, I still have questions as to why I'm on this road~ I'll continue to roll right along!

Through the connections and friendships we all have through this world of social networking~ I'm really beginning to see that I CAN write, I CAN do this and I AM doing this!  Thank you to everyone who has and continues to support me on this crazy FUN journey!

I have many favorite blogs that I also follow~ You might enjoy these as much as I do- check these out!

I'm thankful for social networking and everything it has and is giving me!  I love being a Safety Spokesperson for Protection One, Blogging for Bestlaminate, writing about Teens on The Examiner, and giving an occasional presentation on Pulling Up The Bootstraps!  This Mom continues to march through life and enjoy everything that this world of social networking has to offer!  Now, if someone would tell the SPAMMERS that I am tired of receiving messages on male/female enhancement hormones on SKYPE and my E-MAIL accounts, this Mom will be happy!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Note to health insurance companies~ BE PROACTIVE!

OK~ I'm one stressed out frazzled, frustrated Mom!  I am currently doing everything in my power, in regards to my health, to avoid another back surgery.  As we all know, back surgery is always risky and there are no guarantees.  I was advised by a wonderful Dr. at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. to learn some new ways to cope with the pain.  Try physical therapy, try chiropractic care, try massages, etc.....I took the advice of this Doctor seriously and am trying to do what he suggested.  I do feel the easy way out would have been to ignore his advice and go under the knife right away!

I did the physical therapy and now have a good home routine; in hopes of continuing to build on the strength and exercises that I learned.  Continue to go to the local YMCA- walk on a treadmill (major accomplishment) and lift weights!  I had a little chat with my insurance company today- talk about disgusting!  Did you know that an insurance company does not care when a person starts taking charge and doing things that are good for their bodies?  I will admit, I am very thankful that we do have health insurance.  I honestly don't know how you people get the medical care you need when you don't have any health insurance.

Now a family YMCA membership is just a monthly expense and the whole family benefits.  After three chiropractic visits I can say I feel better- not 100%, but better.  Each Chiropractic visit runs a little more than $100.  My health insurance covers $40.00 per visit- you do the math.  I am currently going 3 x a week.  Those visits will decrease in time.  I don't expect miracles, but hope to feel better and begin to enjoy life again.  BUT- AGAIN- these health insurance companies do NOT care about that!

And to top it all off- this is MARCH~ they pay up to $1000.00 per year!  Well, let's see I don't think I will have any problem topping that.  And, my Chiropractor is in my PPO- very important!  But, if I can find a Dr. to operate on me- BINGO- no problem, my insurance company will willingly fork over the money for that!  This makes NO SENSE TO ME!!! Does it to you?

As of yesterday I was not for health care reform- guess what?  Today I am.  Things cannot get much worse than they are for me now!  Financially- this sucks!  Insurance companies would rather pay for someone to be confined to a wheelchair, immobile,  depressed and not enjoying their life!  Well, I'm taking charge- it will break the bank, but I'm living my life!  For some reason God put me on this ride, still wondering why?!  Would somebody enlighten this Mom and let me know when our insurance companies are going to start being PROACTIVE instead of REACTIVE? BTW- I also think our education system needs to be proactive instead of reactive as well.  That's a whole other blog post!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

55 Degrees~What do you wear?

OK~ Just returned from my favorite Love/Hate store- Wal-Mart.  A few months ago someone forwarded me an e-mail that led me to a web site that shared photos of how people dressed when they shopped at Wal-Mart.  Well, this could be everywhere!  Let me tell ya- today was interesting.

We have had a very cold, snowy winter in North Iowa, but please, people- when it hits 55 degrees- Do NOT show me your bright white legs with tube socks and short shorts!  This was just one of the "outfits" I observed.  Customer #2- Sporting short, shorts (notice a theme here)- flip flops and a tank top Customer #3- Ear Muffs (I kid you not) winter coat and snow boots!  There has to be a middle of the road "dress code" here!  I was wearing jeans, sweatshirt and tennis shoes.  I was enjoying the 55 degree temps, loving the sunshine- but People, please get a grip!  Look in the mirror before you leave your home!  Now, I do not profess to be any type of fashion queen, but I do HOPE that I have much more common sense than what I observed today!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

I was not compensated in any way to write this.   The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Trap shooting season has begun!

OK~ New adventures at the Broers household.  Garrett has taken up trap shooting.  I am optimistic that he will enjoy it and have a successful season.  Yesterday was practice number 1.  We left home in sun (yes, I said sun) 52 degrees.  Got over to Ventura- 40 degrees- foggy and cold! It's only March 16th, why should I expect it to be nice and sunny in Iowa?  I have a feeling that Garrett was glad we had the argument of taking a coat or not!  General consensus between us was, the coat can stay in the car if it is not needed.  Well, needless to say, he did need it!  And he also must have figured that gloves were over rated.  Two hours of waiting for his turn to shoot had turned his fingers to red and numbness.  1/2 way through his round of shooting he had to borrow someone else's gloves.  Oh well, when you are 14 years old, you know it all, right? I have a feeling next time he will think twice about what needs to accompany him to practice!  Heck, this Mom is 43 and still trying to figure it all out.  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

The View was an interesting week! A fun one ahead!

OK~ Personally, I enjoyed Elton John on The View on ABC . He added such a "spark" to the show on Wednesday.  Now, on to this next week!  Jessica Simpson joins the gals for some Hot Topics on Monday. Actress Melissa Tomai is a guest on Tuesday, she will be discussing her upcoming film "Into The Heart of Italy."  Wednesday proves to be another hopping day, as Kate Gosselin is scheduled to co-host and Dr. Drew Pinsky is a guest.  He will discuss his show Celebrity Rehab.  On Thursday you can laugh with Joy, as she discusses her month in review!  Friday looks like a great way to round out the week- Olympic Gold Medalist and new Dancing With the Start Contestant, Evan Lysacek will be stopping by.  And, of course, Friday would not be Friday , The View On ABC without a discussion of the latest fashions!

“I am a participant in a Mom Central campaign for ABC Daytime and will receive a tote bag or other The View branded items to facilitate my review.”

"B" reviewed these Sunflower collectible cards- These retail at $2.99 (affordable, as well).  She also received one velvety figurine horse, which retails for $1.99 (again, very affordable).  She enjoyed the mystery of these collectible cards.  Her Mom helped her set everything up on the computer and they took a magical journey together. They were able to take care of horses, and earn horseshoes, and even received gifts as they searched for the Sunflower Herd.  Bella Sara is a safe web site for our kids.  Parental controls can even be set up to limit your child's access to this magical world.  Her Mom was impressed with the online safety that has been taken into consideration, in regards to their online experience.  Together they were able to unlock a few codes and experience and adventure of their own.

It was in 2007, that Hidden City Entertainment launched this magical horse-themed brand in North America. It was shortly thereafter that the magical horses became a world wide phenomenon.  And today, girls of ages 5-12, are enjoying a safe, online magical adventure.  The message is positive and the experience itself is empowering girls worldwide.

I have to say that I was honestly impressed with the bold, bright colors that decorated each card.  The positive images and words that this little hobby gives girls are fabulous. A great way to involve girls with horses,  if your neighborhood says you can't have one!  I loved this whole concept and hope many young girls around the globe are able to experience this magical world!

New Statistics from our home!

OK~ Just a little micro-management of our cell phone bill.  We have had unlimited texting on our cell phones for quite sometime.  Before our boys had cell phones, I had heard all of the horror stories of the thousand dollar texting bills!  So, we immediately applied "unlimited texting" to our cell phones.  Blaine would have been 15 when he began using a cell phone and I do recall the texting messages- more than thousands in ONE month. Garrett  would have been 11 and  had "0" and I also  had "0." Fast Forward to 2010- Boys are now 19 & 14...............This is the first month that Garrett has had any text messaging- Could there be a girl in the picture?

Latest stats:   (Text messages per month)

Blaine: 478
Garrett: 1278
Mom (Me): 120

Looks like we are a texting family~the mid teens seem to be the time when the texting goes crazy!  So, if you have a tween, brace yourself!  The teen years could be very costly in regards to texting- go with UNLIMITED TEXTING- it definitely pays for itself.  Now, I do know kids are getting their own cell phones much younger than our boys were, so your family could easily benefit from the UNLIMITED TEXTING feature!   I guess what I am trying to say is- don't get caught with a crazy text messaging bill from your teen, it can probably be avoided!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.  I was not paid any compensation to post this.

Hand dryer/paper towels~ How are we supposed to dry our hands?

OK~ How many times have you went to use the restroom in a restaurant?  Probably, several.........Well, you go in, do your thing- then wash your hands.  Then, the hunt begins!  Where are the paper towels?Where is the automated hand dryer?  Then you begin to think- Who in their right mind designed this place? Ahhhh Haaa.....You should have known to look- ACROSS the room.  Of course, you meander across the room- hands dripping wet, leaving little water spots on the floor.  I guess all in all, this is probably job security for the people that clean the restroom.  Oh, and the insurance companies must also love this- a lawsuit is sure to come somewhere down the line. Someone will slip and fall on those darn, little water spots! This situation gets even better when you have little kids in tow!  Have you experienced this? After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Spring is in that mess, somewhere!

OK~ This is what part of my yard currently looks like!  Look at all of that gravel that has been tossed on the grass.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes that grass to make it's way through.  As you can tell, we still have a lot of snow in Iowa!  This is just one section of it. Any thoughts as to when this snow will all be gone? Ahhhhh, you gotta love the joys of country living!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

The View was an interesting week! A fun one ahead!

OK~This week was an average week for me in regards to The View.  I enjoyed Valerie Bertinelli co-hosting, but Friday about put me to sleep.  The Pre-Oscar show did not do it for me!  So, moving foward~ I'm sure there's more good stuff to come.

Monday is a re-cap of the Oscars (hopefully a little more lively than Friday's show)!  Tuesday should be rockin' with Andy Garcia and his daughter Dominik Garcia-Lorido as they stop by to discuss their new film City Island. Wednesday, the controversial, Jesse Ventura will be dropping in to discuss his new book American Conspiracies.  I wonder how that will go with the ladies and their different points of view!

The end of the week looks very good~ Elton John, yes, I said Elton John!  He will be on The View on Thursday.  Designer Carolina Herrera will be rounding out the week with a showing of the latest fashions. With many more discussions around the table and more great guests tossed into the mix~The week of March 8th looks to be a fun one over on The View!  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

What happens when you throw a bunch of women together in one room? YIKES!

OK~  Our local school is working on doing some re-aligning of grades, etc.  We will have a 5/6 building, 7/8building and then 9-12 building. We have, in the past, had two Middle School buildings 6-8.  This left an issue with how to work the PTO (Parent Teacher Organizations) in both schools.  Answer, combine in to one 7-12 building.  First meeting, the tension was interesting; you could feel it between both parent groups.  With a little bit of time and understanding as to how this will work, I do know that people will come together.

Several parents stated concerns that people won't want to participate for a high school PTO sponsored activity because they have a 7th grader, tadatada....the whining continued. Well, this is part of the problem in our schools today.  If everybody would step back, take a deep breath and realize we here for our kids and to support our school.  It doesn't matter what grade my child is in, I am choosing to partake in this group to support the school.

Point being, we as parents, need to be respectful!  We need to work towards working together and making it work.  NEVER did I think I would hear from someone, "We have too many people here.  We will never get anything done!"  This person should have been singing the praises- as it's AWESOME to have a group of maybe 40 parents willing to support a 7-12 PTO! In the grand scheme of more than 1500 kids (40 is not that great).  I know this will work out, people will accept each other- it's just too bad that a little more respect wasn't shown at meeting #1!  Our kids are what count, let's get our act together and make it work.  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Is Spring here?

OK~   What do you see in this photo?  Do you see less snow?  Do you see Spring?  This was taken outside my patio doors today, March 2, 2010.  Hoping for a big warm-up.....and NO MORE SNOW!  I love it when the first buds come out on the trees- and I'm still on a hunt for a robin....Might be a while.  Do robins like snow?  If not, I guess I'll be searching for that robin for a LONG time! It's been a long winter in Iowa, hopefully; we will have a beautiful Spring.  After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?
