My faith has been renewed when it comes to teens

OK~ The Mohawk Trapshooting Team has renewed this Mom's views on our teens today.........A successful day while working, literally working all day~at a National Trapshooting Event in Ackley, Iowa at Stockdales.  15+ teens were respectable, hard working, honest and put in a hard day of work!  Just goes to show that when teens are given responsibility with direction and support~ they will pull through!  I am proud to say that I was with this group today and applaud these teens for their hard work!  Mohawk Trapshooters, you rock!  This Mom is proud to say she knows you!  My faith has been renewed in our teens~  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Random thoughts on bicyclists and more

OK~ It is now almost September 1, and bicycle season has been here for a few months.  I can honestly say that through the course of the whole season, I have seen two, yes TWO, bicyclists stop at a stop sign.  Do bicyclists not understand the concept of STOP......Maybe it is the fact that we drivers of our automobiles are so used to driving to be on the look out for them - AND we slow down and let them go on through.  Statistically, it's probably not a good thing for a bicyclist to get used to,  as all it takes is one time, and an accident can occur.

When our kids were younger we rode our bicycles a lot.  And I can say that we did stop at those stop signs. Maybe these random thoughts are pointless, as I see many cars sliding through those stop signs as well........Makes it interesting when you have a teenage driver in the house and you are trying to show them the rules of the road.....I do make it a point to obey a stop sign, as I do not want to deal with the consequences.  Just the other day Garrett and I counted six cars that ran right through stop signs~ this is small town Iowa, not a big city. I can only imagine.......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Can you say lazy?

OK~ These two are VERY, VERY spoiled dogs~After vacuuming up a ton of dog hair and their messes~ they are outside!  Between the dog hair, dog food, and "stuff"~ our entry way looks much better!  And this couch- the vacuum had a major work out as well.  And look at that Skipper (black dog on right)- he has taken to MY pillow~ New pillowcase in order - NOW! These two dogs have taken lazy to a new level! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Those darn fly/bug strips

OK~ We are NEVER purchasing these fly/bug strip things again.  I was nonchalantly observing Todd and Garrett giving Wally a bath.  And the next thing I know, my head is stuck to the window.  Well, I was looking through a screened window and this yucky, sticky strip (bugs and all)  is stuck to my forehead................It hurt!

I told Blaine to find a pair of scissors and the next thing I know, he is cutting a chunk of hair off of the front of my head.  I honestly thought he would cut the fly strip................We then proceeded to chop away at this sticky strip................My hair and forehead feel absolutely disgusting!  Now, to find the right product to get it out of my hair.  I guess I also need to evaluate how much hair Blaine actually chunked off!  It's off of my head and hair.....Geeeeezeeee....Can I this Mom get a break?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Iowa harvest is coming soon

OK~ The nights are cooler and the crops are a changing..........This will be a common sight in our yard in the coming weeks. Garrett helped scoop a lot of corn out of these bins this summer~ gotta love a 15 year old that's not afraid to shovel some corn!  Thanks to Uncle Jeff, Garrett has the opportunity to experience the life of a farmer. There is hope~ My 15 year old is FINALLY getting it!

OK~ I've always been an admirer of Moms that claim their boys, or young men, can keep their school work neat as a pin!  Through the years my boys should have been given the title of "King of Disorganization!"  I can recall when Blaine was in 6th Grade and just entered Middle School.  He, of course, was not bringing anything home that needed to be shared with me or any homework, etc......So, I went into the Principal's office about two weeks after school started and said, "I am here to clean out Blaine's locker- what is the locker # and combination?"  She looked at me and said, "Hallelujah!" Mind you, this is just a couple weeks after school started.  I opened his locker and papers upon papers just fell out of it!  I tossed a lot of paper into a recycling bin that day........And his younger brother has not been any better........BUT, he's now in 10th Grade and carried some homework home today~ This kid has not brought homework home in probably five years!  When he did bring anything home- it was folder, upon folder, upon folder, with crinkled papers everywhere.....Look at what he brought home today!  I am still stunned!
We have two very neat notebooks and a Math Book......Sure, we are only one full week into the new school year~ THIS is MAJOR at this house!!!!!  I can't get over how neat this is.........Will it last?  Time will tell...Usually, by the end of Week #1- we have papers, papers, papers, everywhere.......This Mom is praying hard that this lasts......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Bootstrapped in Iowa!

OK~ I've done it....I am proud to say that I published my first book!  I published Bootstrapped in Iowa through Lulu.com.  This is an electronic book, often referred to as an E-Book.  This means you can download it to your computer and read it from there!  I was very nervous when I actually pushed the PUBLISH button~ as it's done!  Still can't believe I did this.....

It's been a work in progress.......I seriously hope everyone that reads my book comes away with a better appreciation of others, as well as themselves.  Life is not always a fairy tale, although we would like it to be.  I've had to pull my bootstraps up many times in my life, but sure appreciate the fact that I was allowed to grow up in Iowa!

Life throws us all curves-----but learning how to deal with them in a positive fashion, is definitely the key!  When you throw in teenage boys, wow~ does life ever get interesting!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mom, I don't want to drive~ What?

OK~ Did this Mom hear this correctly?  Garrett has had his driver's permit for almost a month now and he seriously does not like to drive.  I think it's good for him to practice now and then, but it's like pulling teeth to get him to practice......Well, I think I'll let him decide when he wants to drive.....After all he's watched his brother rack up a few tickets in regards to fender benders~ Looking back, his brother could not wait to get his driver's license!  I don't know about you, but I cringe when my kids get behind the wheel when we have layers and layers of ice and snow on the ground~ Thinking about that, I don't like to drive in that stuff anymore either.  You suppose it has something to do with this 40 something Mom and her aging eyes!  Maybe this is a good thing, don't ya think?  There is no hurry.  He's only 15 and has his whole lie ahead of him when it comes to driving........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A summer Evening in Iowa

OK~ Looking at this and thinking, I'm liking this photo!  Look at how wide open this Iowa road is......It is truly amazing that in approximately four months it will be almost impassable due to snow and ice!  The railroad tracks are a busy place, but having lived within 1/2 mile of them all of my life~ I really don't hear trains very often.  Thinking I'm going to enjoy the last few weeks of summer~ as the change of seasons will be happening way toooooo soon for this Mom!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mom, My car won't start~~~~GRRRR

OK~ Blaine is out of town training for a new job......a couple hours from home.  7:00 a.m. rolls around and it appears that he left the key on in the car all night.  Well, what's a 19 1/2 year old to do?  He, for whatever reason, starts texting his Uncle......I become aware of the situation and text him telling him to find some jumper cables....AND, of course he did not take one of the two,  jumper cable things that we own.......He did have one, but failed to charge it regularly, therefore; a dead charging machine!

Well, almost 10 hours have passed and the last text message I received was, "They have jumper cables at the hotel!"  So, I'm assuming all is well!  What would we do without text messaging AND what would a 19 1/2 year old do without his family? This is his second week of training for a new job out of town and as his Mom I think all around it's a great way for a young adult to experience life away from home.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

All of these food recalls

OK~ Is it just me, or what?  Does it seem like about every other day there is a food recall of a food in one form or another?  I usually don't pay much attention to these recalls, as I usually figure I don't have any of the items.  I got to thinking about this egg recall, sure enough!  We have 1/2 a carton of these eggs left in the fridge, which means we have consumed the other 6!

As most of you know, I am not Martha when it comes to the kitchen.  Last night I whipped up some pancake batter and I guess I accidentally got part of an egg shell in the batter.  As my husband was eating a pancake, he made a face as the shell crunched in his mouth~ YIKES!!!!!  Hopefully that little egg shell won't have any bad effects on him!

The eggs were produced locally in Iowa- and this recall involves those of you that also reside in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.  Here's information on what to look for on the egg cartons.  Hopefully you won't have any of these in your refrigerator, but if you do I hope you have 12 eggs in the carton and not 6! The recall states that customer should return the eggs in the original carton (which I do have) to where they were purchased for a full refund.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

How cool is too cool?

OK~ Our central air conditioner is taking a break today, fresh, crisp, cool (in my opinion), breezy air has moved into Iowa today........The thermostat in the house says 75 degrees and I am quite comfy.  Several windows are open, everyone else is still hot!  What?  I'm now sporting a sweatshirt, as I think it is cold in the house! Lots of windows open and fresh air flowing through.

I hope this is not an indication that I am really, really getting old.....Just a couple days ago Todd & I were in a restaurant, mind you the heat index was 100 degrees +, and an elderly lady walked in wearing pants, long sleeve shirt, sweater and scarf!  I hope I'm not headed in that direction......Should I be concerned?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Hosting a Foreign Exchange Student Can Open Many New Doorways

OK~ I was contacted by the EF Foundation for Foreign Study, which is a non profit organization dedicated to encouraging cultural awareness and mutual respect through student exchange.  Due to the fact that I've always been intrigued by the thought of hosting an exchange student, I thought it would be fun to blog about this wonderful opportunity for families.

This particular organization will work with you and help your world come alive in a way you never knew was possible.  A family that we have known for several years kindly opened their home to an exchange student in 2006 and are so thankful that they did.

The Baker family "fell" into an opportunity to host an exchange student.  Their oldest daughter, who was a Freshman in high school, came home and asked her parents if they would consider hosting a girl from Germany.  This particular girl was in another home and just not fitting in.  Several family meetings later, a few days later, and the night before Thanksgiving, the Baker family picked up Alina to bring her "home."

                                                            Photo submitted by Lea Baker

Alina fit right in!  She became one of the Baker Girls and learning about each other's culture is something that they still appreciate today.  Since the exchange, Alina has came back to the USA to visit three times, with another visit planned in 2011.  The Baker's oldest daughter was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Germany this past summer and visit Alina.  Hosting an exchange student was something they had "thought" of doing; as they had met an exchange student from Oslo, Norway, in 1984. They had never pursued the experience any further, until the opportunity landed in their lap!

So, if you have ever considered, or even thought of hosting an exchange student, check out the EF Foundation for Foreign Study, as they will work with you and help you and your families dreams come true!  When you host an exchange student, you will have the opportunity for first hand experience of what life is like in another country.  And you will also have the privilege of sharing your life in the good old USA!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I was not compensated in any way to post this.  The opinions here are mine and the experience is that of an Iowa family.

The countryside and cats~ a saga in itself

OK~ We all know that summertime in Iowa is hot, humid and sticky!  And if you live in the country you probably have an abundance of farm cats.....Well, look what we found!  Isn't this kitten the cutest little thing?  I never realized her Momma was gonna have kittens- obviously, she did!  And then there is Oscar~

Let's just say that Oscar's Mother kept her in a garbage can.  Someone accidentally emptied the garbage can into another one.  Two days later, Oscar was found- alive- in the bottom of a garbage can in the box of an empty oil filter box.  Oscar was probably 5 weeks old at the time.  Oscar is thriving, doing well and quite a hunter!  He was the little kitty around here, not anymore; now that we found this cute striped kitten!  Oh, so glad to know that Stumpy is having kittens as I write this!  Garrett just informed me that we have "fresh" kittens in the barn.............

It's sure looking like I will not have to worry about a single mouse in the house this fall~ with all of these cats running around.....A little over a year ago I was ready to fire every single farm cat, as the mice were in my house............

Always something going on~ gotta love Iowa in the summertime!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Thankful for the mobile tire service.....and more!

OK~ Our family is truly blessed to have a Brother, Brother-In-Law, Uncle that brought over the tire service! This guy knows how to fix anything and everything, love him!

Blaine is getting a lesson in Tires- 101!

Here's the four slashed tires~Now to find who has way too much time on their hands to cause all of this chaos!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Mom doesn't get it~

OK~ I'm amazed that I slept through the arrival of the tow truck last evening and awoke to a beautiful note from my son stating that all four tires on his car had been slashed!  What?  I have never understood vandalism, and I honestly just don't get how some people thrive on making the lives of others so miserable.........I could almost say with certainty that the person/persons that did this would be irritated if someone did this to them.

This type of activity, in my eyes, is just another form of bullying.  This young man has been bullied since 1st Grade, and I do pray that it will end soon!

Blaine says to me, "Mom, how do people slash tires?"  He's 19 1/2 years old and has no clue how people do this.  My advice to him- "If you are around someone with a knife, common sense says run!"  They will be keying cars or slashing tires shortly!"  This Mom is just not happy.............After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School pictures

OK~ We will actually have a school picture this school year.  Last year we had one, but Garrett's 8th Grade year, no pic!  This Mom forgot!  Forgot the day itself, forgot the day money had to be turned in to purchase the pics that were actually taken~ Garrett reminded me the last day of school........So, here we are.  A new school year is upon us (10th Grade)  and we WILL have a school picture....Now to wait and see what it looks like.  Any bets that Garrett did NOT smile.........

I have very few pics of this boy smiling and those of you that know him~ know that he does not smile willingly for a camera.  I hope YOUR school pics go great and they turn out awesome!  Doesn't every Mom deserve a nice school pic of their school age child?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Being a Mom isn't easy..........

OK~ Being a Mom is a hard job!  Why do we worry about some of the craziest things?  Probably because we should!  When our kids are little we worry if they are getting enough to eat- when they get older we worry about what they are eating.  We worry about them falling off of a bicycle and later on we worry about them crashing into a bicycle.  When we register our teens for school in the Elementary years we worry about them getting along with their teacher and when High School rolls around we worry about them not getting into the classes they have requested.

We really shouldn't worry~ after all, if we'd just toss it all into God's hands, we'd all probably be a little smarter!  But, it's oh so easy to get caught up in the day to day activities of life, isn't it?  As a Mom to teens I've experienced way more as a Mom than I ever, in my wildest dreams, imagined!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

How do you really know if you are a TRUE Iowan?

OK~ Here's my top five reasons on how you know if you are a TRUE Iowan!

  • You recognize the difference between a corn field and a soy bean field AND maybe even recall the days of walking beans!
  • You realize that our public schools are in financial craziness (You have actually read your property tax bill)
  • You can relate to " Deer Magnet" that recently made the national news.  Too many of these crazy things running around, personally; I DISLIKE them on the hood of my car!
  • You know what a "tractor" ride is and maybe even participated
  • When someone says, "Yeah, I know where Iowa is" and they say, "Oh yeah, Ohio, where they grow the potatoes!"~ You just smile and let it go!
With another Iowa State Fair upon us~ a great tradition in itself~ we Iowans are proud to say we live in Iowa~ great place to raise our kids~ but, I honestly can't say it's a great place to stay!  Economically our state needs to get it together.  Young adults graduating from college are leaving the state faster than you and I can say, "IOWA."  Our family farms are fading, with this goes a way of life~  I see this daily..........What to do, what to do......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
