What's a teacher to do?

OK~ I'm listening to the news in the background and I hear "Schools are scrambling for high test scores, due to NCLB." No Child Left Behind, in this Mom's opinion, has left more children behind than ever before.  As a Mom to a 15 and 19 year old, I can tell you that when my boys have taken tests, it is up to them to complete the test- not their teachers, not their parents, not the government- the whole test is up to them to complete.

Reality from this Mom's point of view is that many teens just flat out do NOT want to be in school.  So, how on earth is a teacher supposed to encourage the importance of doing well on a test? We, as a society, cannot make our kids be something they are not.  The fact that so much $$$ is dependent on these silly test scores is crazy- yep, I said it, "SILLY TEST SCORES!"  Not every kid tests well.  I happen to know a 14 year old who is a Straight A student and does not do well on these so called standardized tests.

In Iowa our schools are cutting jobs left and right~ as there is no money.  My heart goes out to any young person graduating from college with a teaching degree~ I have a feeling they won't find a job in Iowa- they will definitely have to move elsewhere.  Not a good thing for our aging state.....

I am not an educator, just a Mom that does not feel that funding for schools should be placed upon these scores.  I know many teens that want to be in school, but I also know many that despise getting out of bed to head to school each day.  The fact that some of these kids actually show up for school is an accomplishment in itself.  So- what is a teacher to do?  As a Mom, I'm not sure what can be done~ I have many teacher friends that work hard day in and day out...and they cannot force a student to perform well on a test that they do NOT wish to take! What ya fishing for~

OK~ Fishing is always an adventure~ but even better when it's with friends and teens!  Lets see- How about a recap of everything that was caught today.  We started off the day with a frog that returned for the same thing- time and time again....I believe he was caught 4 times and moved on to bigger and brighter happenings!  Then the ever dreaded bullhead- those things do have nasty stingers!

Several people were catching sunfish and blue gills in the same pond that the frog resided in.  Although, our fishing crew did not catch any of those.  This evening while on a river- five channel catfish.  Now, I have no clue as to what the difference is between a CAT FISH and a CHANNEL CAT FISH, but I know we have fish!  Wonder what tomorrow will bring?

And for the record- I have not gotten my fishing license yet this year- I have NOT touched any hooks, worms, fish on hooks, hooks, tackle gear, etc..........Maybe next time I'll have a fishing license in tow.
Hope the weather is nice for you and your family this holiday week-end~ Sure is a beauty in Iowa!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

End of the School year~Are you doing a happy dance?

OK~ I'm wondering how many Moms in the world are doing a happy dance now that the school year is wrapping up?  I'm guessing there are more happy dances when August rolls around.  Summertime brings family fun, but it also brings stressful times for many parents.  The thought of ,"What is my child going to do all summer?"  Enroll them in a reputable day care program- sure, that works for some.  If they are older- how about checking into some volunteer opportunities within your community.Summer camps- scouting, church, and a few schools offer these types of opportunities.  But remember, kids won't usually seek these out- It's up to parents to find these things!

I know that the fishing lines need to be untangled at this house, a treehouse needs some serious repairs, a golf ball retriever needs to be purchased,  kittens need some attention and a lot of lawn needs to be mowed.  Our 15 year old should, the key word here, should be busy!

A good old fashioned Iowa Summer~ here we come!  I'm sure lots of rocks will be tossed into streams, hay will be bailed, and a run-in with a raccoon will surely occur~ always does........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Mom does NOT like snakes~

OK~ Garrett is mowing the lawn- I hear the mower stop.  "MOM- Come here!"  I'm thinking, "Now What?"  I get 2 feet away- here ya go- this crazy snake came flying up at me! You gotta love a good old Iowa snake........ Boys and snakes- I just don't get it- guess I never will!  After All, It's  All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A tangled mess~

OK~ Many of you know that I despise my front load washer.  This is how a typical load of clothes comes out of this crazy thing~ It's been a major pain from day one!  This washer is not my best friend and I will not buy another front loading machine.  These clothes have looked like this from Day #1!  So, if a salesman tells you they are consumer friendly~ this Mom begs to differ!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Kitchen is NOW closed

OK~ A typical day.......

Garrett:  Mom, bring me a sandwich!

Me:  I am not your maid.

Garrett:  Last time I checked you were!

What~ as many of you know I would be a horrible maid and I am the Mother of a demanding 15 year old teenager and a 19 year old that is "floating."  Next time- "Kitchen closed!"

Where did ONE year go?

OK~ Thinking back to a year ago today.  Our oldest son graduated from high school.....Wow- a year it has been.  From enrolling in College, to dropping out of College, to a meet up with a police officer here and there- we have survived!  And, he does have A job.  The path that seems so set for so many, has not been set here.  Many of us had/have no clue when we graduate from high school- some are in their 30's, 40's, 50's and still searching.

I seriously pray that he is and will find his place~ The pressure to go to college is so great for all of these kids- Lets face it, if they really have no clue what they want to do and are not wanting to go. Why fork over all of that money?  Jobs are scarce, a Mom's patience and worry is tested daily, but through God's Grace, we will endure!

The road of life is different for all of us.  And, it is wrong for us to judge what is best for someone else, because we only know what is best for us.  It's hard, from a Mom's point of view, to let him go~ but he is 19 and his choices are ultimately his..........Just my thoughts on what happened to the past year....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Help~ My Facebook page was hacked!

OK~  We all know that Facebook is a part of our world today, and almost a necessity.  If you are not connected on Facebook~ where are you?  How do you find out what is happening with all of your "friends" and fellow business partners?

Well, some idiot decided to hack into my Facebook page yesterday.  I can honestly state that Facebook was of absolute NO help, whatsoever.  I moved on to plan "B" rather rapidly.  I immediately began the process of setting up a new Facebook page.  Being a freelance writer and social media nut~ I needed this page back up and running!

So, this Mom's opinion of how to avoid being hacked on Facebook:

  • Have a very, very LONG, complex password
  • Do NOT have the Facebook feature on your phone (this appears to be how I was hacked, through a message that I did not fully read, but did open-no links were clicked on)
  • The help sections are relatively useless~ easier to google search than use Facebook's help settings
  • Monitor your Facebook page daily
And, Finally~Thanks for everyone for being so patient with me and sticking by me!  I hope this never happens to you!  Thanks for being my friend, AGAIN!  And, of course, all of this happens during the ONE busy week of the year for us!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Boys and worm farms

OK~ Now that Spring has arrived and the critters are coming around.  In Iowa we have mice, garter snakes, bull snakes, raccoons, and worms........Worms do sound rather harmless, but they do have an interesting odor over time.  When Garrett was @ 4 years old, he and a neighbor girl decided to each fill a beach pail with dirt and fill it with worms.  The problem being, they never told their Mothers.  Approximately two weeks later this horrible odor had formed in Garrett's bedroom.  YIKES~ when I found the culprit- a colorful, beach pail filled with dirt and dozens of dead worms!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My thoughts on this massive oil spill

OK~ I was watching a news show last evening about the oil spill that we are currently watching in the Gulf of Mexico.  Now, living in Iowa, I will not directly see the impact of this.  But, I will indirectly feel the impacts of it.  There is no doubt in my mind......I like to eat shrimp- I'm guessing the price of shrimp will go up and I believe everyone is scared as to what will happen to the price of oil.

What's interesting to me is that the oil company and scientists are at odds as to how much oil is leaking out every day.  From 5000 gallons to 70,000 gallons~ I'm not a Mathematician and I can tell you that 65,000 gallons is a big difference.  But, when you look at the size of the ocean, it's probably the size of a pin head.

Look at all of the chaos that this leak is causing.  We are now almost one month into this escapade and we still have oil leaking into the Gulf waters.  I understand we have never had anything like this happen~ But, I do believe oil companies should have a plan in place when these accidents occur- they are accidents- and that means it can happen anytime.  Maybe from now on there will be laws in place which require oil companies to have plans for these accidents. Maybe 11 people would not have had to die while out on that oil rig. My understanding is this was an accident, but to the best of my knowledge, has not been disclosed.

Think of the tourism dollars lost, lives that were lost, jobs lost, and all of the damage to the life in the water, life along the shore lines, and the beauty of these beaches.  I'm just glad I did not have a vacation planned to the Gulf Shores~ feel bad for those that do.  Iowa isn't looking so bad after all!  Just gonna kick back and enjoy Iowa~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Happy Birthday, Garrett~

OK~ I know you don't like your picture taken.  It was hard to find  a somewhat recent photo of you smiling~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARRETT!  Hard to believe my baby is 15 today!  Where have those years gone............I am now the midget in the family!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Typical meal at our home~

Ok~ Here's how supper goes tonight?

Garrett:  Mom, I'm really, really hungry!

Me:  It's done in 5 minutes.

Garrett:  OK
(5 minutes goes on, I take supper out, set it on table)

Garrett:  What is this?  (I'm thinking enchiladas and they do NOT look funny!)

Me:  Enchiladas

Garrett:  Ummmmm.....shrugs his shoulders.  I guess it won't kill me this time!

Garrett will be 15 tomorrow~ hard to believe all he was concerned with a few years ago, was the cabatche (ketchup)- That's how he pronounced ketchup for many years!

Cell phones and Birds make the perfect Wal-Mart outing!

OK~Thinking of a recent trip through Wal-Mart.  I was in the produce section, Todd had ventured to the electronic section and one of the boys was somewhere in between.  A few minutes later- phone rings, "Where are you?"  My reply, "Produce."  Hangs up.  A minute later, "Where are you?" My reply, "Produce."  Two different phone calls, the same reply~ this is how you know we are living in 2010.  It used to be that when you were in a store and so called "lost" someone, you looked for them or went to the service desk to put out a call for them!

Now, I have no clue if Wal-Mart would call for someone or not.  Due to cell phones, our family has the issue solved!  Oh, and while I was standing in the produce section, a bird flew in front of me!  Yes~ in the store- near the produce.

Just another reason to wash that produce before you eat it!  Does your Wal-Mart have flying birds in it?  Or, are we the only fortunate store to have these beautiful (NOT) winged creatures flying through the produce section.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Boys and hair~

OK~ Short post~  The one thing I like about it when my teenage boys grow their hair out.  It is one thing you can easily take away from them when you want to take something away from them........Time for a hair cut.......I can honestly say that when my boys have had longer hair as teens, they are mouthier, ruder, and just plain naughty......Any thoughts on this- What's your experience been?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

P.S.  Garrett's Mother (Me) cut his hair tonight~ looks much better!

The things in life that make you say "What?"

Ok~ Thinking of many different things today, so here I go!  Why do these things make us say, "What?

  • Teens are asked to remove their shirts with the American Flag on it; in a school in California this past week.  The last time I checked, the flag was representative of the country California is in........
  • My dog helping himself to the food in the fridge...........
  • Mother's Day is only ONE day out of the year..............................
  • Drivers not using their turn signals...............
  • The calendar says May- but my thermometer says 44 degrees..........with a freeze watch in the forecast.....................
  • Buffets are wonderful, but reality sinks in when I look around and see that most of the people enjoying the buffet are obese..........a simple reminder to not return..............
Just a few things on my mind~ I really do wonder what is happening in our country today.  It is sad when citizens of the United States cannot wear clothing with the American flag~ I wonder how many times this type of activity happens?  As a Mom, I am thankful for freedom, healthy kids and YES- Mother's Day is tomorrow- ONE day out of the year!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Have you ever done this?

OK~ We drove by a park today and I was taken back to when our oldest son was approximately 5 years old.  The four of us were attending a company picnic (remember what those were?) this company hasn't had one since~ Garrett was just starting to walk and Blaine was running all around having the time of his life.  What kid doesn't love a playground?  Well, it came time to depart.  I told Todd I would be heading home and I had Garrett with me.  We had drove separately and this park was approximately 10 miles from our home.

Garrett and I got home, about 15 min. later Todd came home- without Blaine!  We had now officially done it- we had abandoned our child at a playground.  Cell phones were not around at this point- we all hopped in the car and headed to the playground.  I thought to myself, he is going to be devastated that we left him or oblivious to the fact that we had even left!

We arrived at the playground, a co-worker had taken him under their wings and he had not missed us, had no clue we had actually left him there-Have you ever done this?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Sunday morning~ where is everyone?

OK~ I sat in church on Sunday looking around me.......Within my view, there was one baby and several adults.  That was it.  For our children's sermon there were maybe 7 kids, I could not see the actual number from where I was seated.  Granted, we are not in church every Sunday, but do go rather frequently. If we are not at church, we are at Sunday School.  Garrett & I have both helped with Sunday School throughout the year, as several others have.  As with any group I've been involved in~Why is it that the same people are always the same ones to step up to the plate to help?  I've wondered this for years.

I look at our church- it is an older congregation.  There are definitely more people 65+ than 10 and under- with a ratio of probably 10:1.  I wonder where all the younger people are.....I personally think it reflects upon the inmportance that our society has put on sports.  Many families that attended church when their kids were younger, are now transporting their family to an out of town sporting even for the week-end.

I also looked around to see where the Confirmands were from the year before.  Garrett's confirmation class had almost 20 kids in it.  Where are they- Where have they been throughout the whole year?  Most have been committed to their Sports activities- Does anybody else see what is wrong with this picture?

I guess my age is showing- and our boys have never been the "star" athlete.  Therefore, I cannot relate to all the money and time that is spent traveling all over the state on week-end after week-end.  Our world today is so complex- our kids and families need their churches more so than ever before.

I wonder what the future of our church holds.....will it exist?  How will it exist?  Any thoughts on how to "round up" these lost Confirmands from a year ago?  Any ideas on how to get them to set foot into the building on Sunday mornings?

On a positive note, our Wed. night youth group has grown from a couple kids to @ 10 kids within a couple years.  We must be doing something right- Now, how do we get families to step back into the church on Sunday mornings?  This Mom is perplexed- as usual!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

How's Monday treating you?

OK~ How's your Monday going? My hubby is not feeling well- but Skipper is making up for any "kid" chaos for the day!  This is partially my fault, I should know that Skipper cannot eat his food out of a Cool Whip container~ I'm sitting in the living room, laptop on my lap...in the background I'm hearing some crunching.  I thought to myself, "What is that?"  I look up- Skipper has brought his food bowl out of the entryway into the living room! WHAT???????  He truly thinks he owns the house.  Amazingly, he did not spill any on his carefully planned route. All I can think of is, "Oh no- Todd just cleaned the carpets!"  Needless to say, the food dish is back in the entryway and he is in his kennel.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

They've taken over!

OK~ Do you ever feel that your dogs or pets have taken over your space?  Look at these two lazy guys~ Wally and Skipper.  Wally is older and slowing down a little bit.  Skipper, our master at breaking into the fridge, is truly the life of the party!  Yep, the sun is shining and it is the middle of a Spring day in Iowa;  and our two dogs are sacked out on the couch!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
