What's a Mom to do

OK~ I seriously feel for any parent out there that is involved in one of the many toy recalls in the news today.  I can't imagine having to tell a 2 or 3 year old, "I'm sorry, your toy needs to go bye, bye!"  I can tell you that if this would have happened to me when our boys were young, there would have been a major, major revolt!  Our oldest son would literally throw himself on the floor and bash his head into the floor.  Now, our youngest would probably throw the toy at me and call me a nasty name.......My prayers go out to parents that are having to face this situation today. All of this Fundraising

OK~ The new school year is officially here and clubs/groups here in Iowa are on the fundraising prowl.  Maybe it is magazines, candy, chocolate, "junk", or maybe "stuff."  I understand the concept that there are many awesome groups for our youth and they desperately need our support.  BUT, please, parents let your child do the selling!  Part of being involved in a group is learning responsibility.  When a parent takes the reigns and doesn't let the child call "Aunt Suzie," seriously, what is the child learning?  Parents are definitely enabling their kids when their child is not actively involved in fundraising.

When I worked outside the home, I can honestly say that I was annoyed when parents would place a sheet of paper in the employee lounge to buy something from so and so. People have called us to purchase some things we have been selling, when they know we are selling something they want.  In this case, I have followed through, as the parent. I'll let my son know that so and so bought such and such. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I always have my kids approach the people they are "selling" to and they are the ones to say, "Thank You." When kids/teens are not actively involved, why have a fundraiser in the first place?

I realize that parents will pay the price financially if their children do not partake in the fundraisers, but it truly is part of belonging to a group.  Being on a team or part of a group should not be about how much money is made!  It should be about the relationships, friendships, as well as life long skills that are learned from being a part of the group!  Are you and your family doing your part to help build those relationships within the organizations your kids/teens are involved in?  I know this family is trying, and yes, there are the occasional fundraisers, but we do make the best of them!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

And the answer is........

OK~ I'm casually observing Blaine as he's leaving to go out to eat with friends for lunch.  He is 19 1/2 years old.....I observe him open the trunk of his car- reaches in- grabs a rag.  Pops the hood and checks the oil!  I'm thinking way to go!  He heads to the house, I act busy.  He says, "Mom, Should oil be black?"  I honestly had no comment!  After All, Its All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ Garrett cleans up pretty nice don't ya think?  He and his homecoming date went to Applebee's. My cell phone rings and the conversation goes like this:

Garrett:  "Ummmm.....What do I do about this bill?"

Me:  "What do you mean?

Garrett:  "Do I just leave it on the table, wait for the waitress to come back, or go to the register?"

Me:  "Wait for the waitress to come back!"

Garrett:  "OK" (click)

I'm now thinking the waitress has not explained how she will pick up the bill, Garrett is not paying attention to what the waitress said,  OR someone's not doing their job!  Well, he used his resources wisely, his cell phone and his MOM!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Fall has arrived

OK~ I'm not sure if I'm happy about this or not.  Fall has officially arrived, the calendar says so and my body is feeling it!  Why is it that as we age, our bodies literally become seasonal thermometers?

The air is crisp and cool.  The birds are all piled on the electrical lines as they begin to regroup to head South.  Our Iowa crops are ready to be harvested and I even see pumpkins sitting out in the front of the grocery store for purchase.  I guess it's probably time to dig out my coat......I'm going to need it soon!  I kind of like being able to hop in the car and go....no coats, heavy wool socks, hats, mittens....Well, that's another blog post!  I guess I'll accept Fall and try to enjoy it!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Dear Ninja, Rest In Peace

OK~ This Mom has seriously lost count on the number of hamsters we have had through the years.  Huey, Larry, Junior, Ninja, and Ninja ( yes, there were 2 Ninja's).  I know I'm missing one or two, but not sure which one (s)!

On Tuesday night at midnight, Garrett comes knocking on my door, "Mom, Ninja died."  I said, "Oh, OK, we will have to bury him tomorrow."  I crawled over, went back to sleep.  Not sure if I handled this incident well or not.

Garrett got home from school yesterday and I mentioned that he should go bury Ninja.  He went to get him out of his cage.  You know, one thing about Ninja, I only recall that he went on one tour of the house.  The hamsters we have had in the past ALL took waaayyyyy too many tours of the house!  Maybe it's just the fact that Garrett was older and actually got the cage door locked!

Garrett found the perfect tree, dug a hole and said goodbye to Ninja.  I can honestly say this bothered me more than him.  I was proud of him.......he treated his hamster with dignity- at least, that's what this Mom thought!  It's all part of that circle of life as we know it.....Life and death.....It's hard watching a child say good-bye to one of their beloved pets!  Oh well, life goes on!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

P.S.  I think (secretly hope) Ninja is the last pet hamster we have in this house!

Team Work.....you gotta love it!

OK~ We all know what you get when you toss dozens of parents/teens together...a good old spaghetti supper!  We really had a fun time, until we saw water.  We originally thought this Brillo pad was the culprit........BUT it turned out it was not.  We had a little drain issue to deal with.  Which, in turn led to.......

Lets just say lots of mopping and the Mason City Mohawk Trapshooting team left the floor much cleaner than it was when we started our spaghetti supper....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Teens and "the dress code"

OK~ My oldest son (19 1/2) is getting very close to no longer being labeled a "teen."  He came home from work late this afternoon and stated that he would be attending an evening funeral.  He said, "Mom, have you ever been to a funeral at night?" I said,  "No."  He then went upstairs, showered and changed his clothes.  I have to tell you that I was rather stunned, as he had taken the time to find the dressiest clothes that he owned.  I was thinking to myself, "Wow, I must have done something right."  He knows that he should try to present himself the best that he can for a funeral.  He said to me, "Mom, these are the dressiest clothes I have, are they OK?"  Another , "Wow!"  He looked nice- no jeans- nice dress pants, sweater and dress shoes!  There is hope!

I will admit that I am rather saddened that he was attending the funeral of another young person, an 18 year old girl that lost her life in an auto accident last week.  We have lost many young people within our community to auto accidents over the past year, and he unfortunately has known many of them.  Just when we think our teens are not listening to us, God tends to send one of his little reminders to us!

Another fine conversation.....

Ok~ Here's how it goes...

Garrett:  "Mom. whaddat?"

Me:  "What did you say?"

Garrett:  "Whaddat?"

Me:  I looked at him and said, "This Mom does NOT understand whaddat. If you want to talk to me, you use English that I understand!"

Garrett:  Walks away mumbling under his breath!

GRRR..............Ever heard stuff like this?  He is 15 years old, I guess this weird stuff is normal~  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

These things called "skinny" jeans

OK~ Well, this Mom's body has never known the "skinny" look, therefore I really don't understand the concept of "skinny jeans." I'm just sayin'~ I remember the day I blogged about "I'm just sayin'."   What amazes me is that they probably would look OK on someone with a "skinny" figure~ but, why is that I am seeing them on figures that don't fit the "skinny" look?  I think I'll stick to whatever I can find, need to hit the store soon for some new jeans, it's sure to be an adventure.  I guess I'm a 40 something Mom not "hip" to what is in!  Seriously, it might not hurt for some women to invest in a full length mirror~ skinny jeans don't cut it for everyone! All of this laundry

OK~ When is a Mom's laundry pile done?  When my boys were younger we had lots of red juice spills, spaghetti sauce on the shirt (still have that now and then), and the dirt on the jeans.  I'm now wondering where do all of these dirty clothes keep coming from?  Now, if I do the math, there should be 4 shirts, 4 pants, 4 sets of underwear in a day......So, where on earth do all of these jeans, shirts, sweatshirts come from?  Maybe I'm bad with the math!  And the socks~ I am currently looking at 7 pairs of socks, four mis-matched socks, and a hamper that is overflowing.  Thankfully Blaine has taken charge of his work clothes and some of his casual clothes.  The one and only time Garrett has tried to do his laundry he asked me how much dish soap to put in the washing machine....Yikes...Maybe now that he is 15 a laundry lesson is long over due! An interesting dilemma.....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mom- Get me something to Eat!

OK~ The conversation with my 15 year old son usually goes like this-

Garrett:  Mom
Me:  What?
Garrett:  I'm hungry!
Me: So?
Garrett:  Get me something to eat.
Me:  You can get yourself something to eat.
Garrett:  I don't like anything you have.
Me:  Then how am I supposed to get you something to eat? (After all I'm not running a restaurant).
Garrett:  You don't have any chips and salsa?
Me:  Yes, we have chips and salsa.
Garrett:  Is the salsa in the fridge?  ( He only likes cold salsa).
Me: NO!

At this point I give up, let it go, and within a few minutes he is marching to the kitchen and exiting with a bowl of salsa and the bag of chips!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Walt Disney World Bumper Sticker

OK~ I found this in one of my boxes of pictures today.  I would say it's from the 70's.  Anybody else have any idea as to when I would have purchased this?  There is no year on the front or back of it.  Kind of a fun find of the day!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Sept. 11th~

OK~ As a girl from Iowa, I was proud of this purchase that I made from a gift shop while visiting the World Trade Center in New York City.  I was all of  maybe 11 years old at the time!  I recall that the buildings were very tall and it was quite an adventure to get to the top. The elevator ride was quite a ride.  Once we arrived to the top I remember lots of  telescopes, the kind that I always begged my parents for money to use them.  After all, you could not see anything, unless you put some money in them.

On this particular outing, my Dad gave my brother, sister and I money to put in one of them (he rarely agreed to that). My memory of this~ watching a car get stripped while parked on the street down below.  I know there were other views, but the one that sticks in my mind is that poor car!

And it was onto the food line.  I can recall the line for food was long and my parents made the statement, "Oh my, the hamburgers are $1.00.  I suppose we will see that back home sometime soon too!"  And of course a stop at the gift shop where I purchased this pennant that I still have today.

Sept. 11th came many years later~ a day I will never forget.  I had the morning news on while the kids were getting ready for school and I saw an airplane crash into one of the towers.  I could not think that something bad had just happened.  My morning went on........I was in the car and I recall hearing that all air traffic had been suspended in the United States...it was such an eerie feeling as I looked up at the sky.   And as the day progressed things continued to get worse...........

On this day I'm thinking of the many that lost family members, loved ones, and people that meant so much to all of us.  There were many heroes on this day~ some that live to tell their story and some that don't. A day we will never forget!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School pictures

OK~ Remember how I blogged about forgetting to send school picture money a few years back?  Well, school pictures have arrived (there is no smile) but I have a school picture this year!  What's even more amazing is the fact that the pictures are not bent, folded, or even scrunched in the least bit.  I can recall when my boys were younger I would find them scrunched (with a large crease) in the bottom of their school bags!  Ever experienced that?  Well, I am proud to report that we have a 10th Grade school picture and all of the pictures are smooth- no creases, wrinkles, etc!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School Conferences are upon us

OK~ Many kids across the country are heading back to school today for the first time!  Here in Iowa, we already have school conferences on Sept. 9th, yes, you read that correct, Sept. 9th.  Well, within the past three weeks we have had Freshman Orientation (for parents that have Freshman), Back To School Night and now conferences.  I hope parents attend, but with so many visits to the classroom, which have been poorly attended~ I wonder how attendance will be. School started August 17th.

I'm still trying to understand why high school Conferences have to be so out in the open, when Elementary/Middle School Conferences are in a classroom focused on MY child.  Here, at our local high school, teachers sit at tables and converse about our students with other people around.  I've never understood the concept, but I go and listen.  Unfortunately, I could tell you information about other students that is none of my business....I tune it out and focus on my son.  Unfortunately, I think this set-up sends a mixed message to parents~ We want you to come to Conferences, but it's not really as you know a Conference.............yes, other parents and teachers will be around to hear your discussion(s).  Oh well, I'll go and for the parents that don't go to high school Conferences, I can hope that they have called the teacher to arrange a "real" Conference- And in all reality, at the high school level that means 6-7 phone calls to make appointments~ There's got to be a better way to do this~  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Skipper's got quite the life

OK~ We all know how this crazy dog likes to rip into the garbage, chase cars, and generally make life miserable for our farm cats.  What do you think he is thinking?  He looks pretty comfy, but to think of the dog that that is now in that chair cushion........GRRRRRR......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Labor Day

OK~ Another holiday, Labor Day!  What does Labor Day mean to you?  Is it all about work, relaxation, or just another day......This Mom has spent most of this week-end helping with The Heartland Grand Trapshooting Event near Ackley, Iowa.  Our high school trap shooting team is fortunate enough to be asked to work at this HUGE event in Iowa!  It is fun to see that teens, parents, coaches, mentors, grandparents and the like can all work together to make this happen. The days are long, but a very rewarding job at the end of the week-end.  And Wow, some of the men, women, and youth that shoot here are amazing!  As a Mom of teenage boys you never know where you will find yourself-  I have found myself teaching Cub Scouts how to shoot b-b guns, Cub Master, camping with the Cub/Boy Scouts and now I'm finding myself on a trapshooting range.......Never thought I'd find myself on one of those......After All, It's All In a Mom's day, Right?

Ohhh...there's a chill in the air

OK~ Not really sure if I'm ready for Fall, are you?  The air is crisp, cool, and breezy today!  A change from the 90+ degrees and humidity of last week.........The corn and soybeans are changing fast~ looks to be an early harvest this year in Iowa.  Friday night football games are in full force, College football is ready to roll, and the Heartland Grand National Trapshooting Event is happening near Ackley, Iowa!  Iowa is a busy place right now..................The leaves aren't changing yet, but I'm sure they will be very, very soon!  A good morning today, another gravel truck passed BEFORE the school bus arrived!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tomorrow~ please treat this Mom nice!

OK~ Day starts out with Garrett slowly walking out to the bus, which he usually does....thankfully he did......A gravel truck decided to run right by as Garrett was approaching the end of the driveway.  The school bus was stopped waiting for him, thankfully he did not get hurt.  Nice conversation with the County Engineer Department, not sure what I wanted them to say, but I voiced my concern. Phone call from a Classmate about our upcoming Class reunion.... Day continues on....have a fun meal with some classmates from the Class of '85,  nice to reminisce.  My punishment for the day~ arrive home at 9:00 p.m. to find that the dog has drug more garbage out of the garbage can, the sole of Garrett's shoes is literally hanging, and he still needs a haircut!  Oh, and in the midst of the haircut, Garrett asks me, "What do you do at homecoming?"  A girl has asked him........

The hunt for the Crazy Glue is on......can't find any.  Back to town I go~ it's now 9:49 p.m.....  Purchase the Crazy Glue, use the Crazy Glue, trim up Garrett's hair AND then find out that Skipper is sprawled out on our bed with muddy feet!  OK, I now have new sheets to put on the bed, as well as load the trunk of the car for a day at a national trapshooting event in Ackley, Iowa.......7:00 a.m. will come soon~ Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed~ this Mom has had one crazy day!  After All, It's All In a Mom 's Day, Right/
