Yikes...NO E-Mail

OK~What would you do~If your E-mail messages just vanished into thin air? I'm not sure how I would react. It's interesting how we, as a society, have became so dependent on our computers being there for us 24/7. I know, I would miss mine! I'm thinking of all of those "jokes" that Sally has sent me- and those bills. Do you think I would really miss them?

Life did seem a little simpler before E-mail, but was it really?  Back in those days we actually walked beans here in Iowa!  AND, we actually wrote letters, in cursive, mind you! The really cool thing before E-mail, 9 times out of 10, when you made a call to someone in could understand the person on the other end of the phone. My, how times have changed!

Just recently, I had to make a call to a company to re-set one of my electronic devices. It was 9:00 a.m. and the person says to me, "Good Evening!" And then when I really, really worked hard to understand the person I knew that I had called some other country, or so it seemed! A few minutes later, 20 or so, my electronic device was up and working! E-mail is a wonderful tool...although I'm not so sure that employees with the USPS would agree with me! Just some babbling for the day.........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Simple Things In Regards To Etiquette At The Gym

OK~ Having returned home from the YMCA.....This Mom has made three observations. If each and every person would just observe these three simple things; our gyms everywhere would be much safer and be a pleasant experience for everyone!
  • Utilize the Family Changing Rooms - It's just wrong to see an 8 year old boy in a Woman's locker room
  • Observe the signs that say, "Do NOT place your personal belongings here "- Yep, I see this time and time again....when all of the chairs have other people's belongings in them...Hello? Where am I supposed to sit to put my shoes on?
  • Wipe down your exercise equipment. Yep, my iPod has taken two swims! All to the fact that the person before me had left a pool of water/sweat in the bottom of the area where my iPod sits. One would think I would remember to check for water, but somehow when I make a quick pre-wipe with a disenfectant....I somehow miss it!
I love going to the YMCA, and will continue to! But....people. Use some common sense. Show some respect for others! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Parenting Classes........They Might Work

OK~I know I have blogged about this before, but this is really under this Mom's skin. My husband and I were eating at a restaurant today and a Mom, Son (2 years old, maybe), and the Grandmother were sitting in the booth behind us. Mind you, this little young child was taking all of this in. I'm thinking job security for my peers that work in the Education system.  Here's the conversation:

Mom:  "We are just one f----- happy family. I try to tell him that."
Grandma:  "Well, no s---. You are doing what you need to do."
Little Boy:  "What did you say, Mommy?"

Language like this has NO place in a restaurant, nor in front of a young child. Can you imagine what this little boy listens to at home? I really, really don't get it! Seriously, our kids might have a fighting chance if all parents were required to take parenting classes while in the hospital after giving birth AND before their children enroll in school. This is just a small sample of what's out there in our world today! I really, really don't understand this.

The sad part of this- Once this boy is enrolled in Pre-School or School, his teachers will be expected to turn this child into a respectful, straight "A" student! This family represents a large portion of what our kids endure today. We, as a society, owe it to our kids- something needs to change! I don't have all the answers, financially organizations and states are broke. So, what are we supposed to do? I guess-----be an involved parent, volunteer to help with youth where you can....and see what little difference you can make.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Sea World~ Orlando, Florida

OK~Spring Break season is knocking on our doors! And, if you live in the northern part of the United States, you are so ready to move on to a warm season. Maybe you and your family have a road trip on the agenda. If you do.....Florida may be your destination! Sea World in Orlando, is sure to please the whole family. If you have not planned to visit this theme part while in the Orlando area, you will want to check it out!  Here's five reasons why you will want to spend a full day at Sea World in Orlando-

Oh ~ and who does not love those cute critters called penguins? The Penguin Encounter is a great place for a few smiles and give your body a little break from the warm Florida temps~

So much to see, so much to do...and only so much time! It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the layout of the park before you head through the gates. Make a swing through this interactive park map to help you and your family know the park layout and what's around each corner!

Plan NOW~ include Sea World, Orlando in your Spring Break Destination! Fun for kids of all ages~ and when I say kids...I'm also referring to Mom's, Dad's, Grandpa's, & Grandma's~There is something for everyone~ and a full day's of activities for the whole family! You set your pace once you enter the park....Slow & Easy OR Fast & Furious~ Sea World has it all!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*My family and I will be receiving complimentary park tickets in March 2011. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. The photo is courtesy of Sea World, Orlando.

All of This Technology

OK~ After having spent most of yesterday in an airport...I ask this question.....Does anybody talk anymore? Just out of curiosity- I am guilty of it! Texting is convenient and gets right to the point. Since we are all so busy, it's sent when it's convenient for us and it's read when it's convenient. Kindles and Nooks are also convenient. I read a book on my Nook- sounds kind of cool, right?  Book on my Nook! But, I have to admit I was pleased to see that people still do hold actual books in their's a good feeling!

Oh, and it's interesting to see how many can maneuver the curbs, people, and benches while sporting ear phones and texting. Lets just say I saw some that handled it well AND some not so well! Casual conversation is almost a thing of the past. We are all so consumed in our gadgets and that "need" to be doing something all the time. Angry Birds seemed to be a hit everywhere I went......Oh well.....Just hope this generation ( my boys included) still know how to hold an everyday conversation with other people! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

How Does Your Day Compare?

OK~ I had the opportunity to travel alone....on business!  Last time I flew...I had two boys in tow- 9 and 4 at the time!  Seriously, the adventure with my two boys was much simpler than this little adventure. It all started when Old Man Winter slammed the Mid-West....Got the dreaded call from DELTA that my flight was cancelled for today!  The woman at the counter for Delta worked her tail off to get me where I needed to be...round about way...but I made it!  Short recap of my day:

  • Young girl enters the plane and literally throws up in the aisle next to my seat, before everyone was even on the plane.  She comments that she told her Mother she did not feel well, as she had been sick all night. What would you have done- Boarded or not? I pray that I do not get whatever she had!
  • Fly to a connecting airport~ 5 hour layover, which turned into a 6+ hour delay.
  • Had to check carry on bag due to "full plane"- not 1 empty seat!
  • Carry on bag arrived fine....then somehow I managed to hop on the wrong hotel shuttle

I've had a fun day people watching, having my patience tested, and I think my brain is fried! On the plus side, I get to meet some new people tomorrow...excited about another adventure in my life...Oh yeah...and then I get the lovely text message from my 20 year old...."Mom, I didn't make it to my dentist appointment!" Well, Mom leaves and things get interesting~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Ways This Mom Knows Spring Is On The Way

OK~ I learned a thing or two this past week......Here's 3 things that showed this Iowa Mom that Spring is on the way...(Somewhere out there, I just know it is)!

  • Walking outside to not hear the sound of a 4-Wheeler, when I had heard it earlier
  • Walking inside to see I have 9 missed phone calls from my 15 year old son
  • Becoming informed that he has buried the 4-Wheeler on a Minimum Maintenance Road
NOTE:  The above would not have happened had it been -20 degrees outside and frozen snow/ice!

Winter was peaceful....No 4-Wheeler ripping around in the mud and snow! The dogs' feet were clean- or so they appeared to be. Garrett's pants did not have stripes of mud dripping from them!  Oh well, time to brace oneself and get ready! An almost 16 year old is sure to make this household a little more by day!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Lighting In The Car

OK~ Garrett and I are in the car, and it is dark outside. He decides it is time to go on the hunt for something in the car. I continue to drive~ He continues to search. Remember the days when you had a flashlight nearby (probably still should), and actually used the small lights in the car? Those days are long gone....It's natural for a 15 year old to reach for ahhhh....the cell phone! Teens are creative when it comes to using these devices~they know how to get the biggest bang for their buck (or their parent's)! I will fess up....I have used my cell phone as a flashlight! The problem with the crazy flashlight has always been-the battery is dead! I purchased one of those crank up ones a few years ago and I have to say, it's very reliable, as long as I remember where I put it! Now my fifteen year old son could care less about an actual flashlight....he's got his handy, dandy cell phone~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

What's In Your Cupboard? Surprise!

OK~ I go to open a cupboard door this morning to retrieve a glass. I glance towards the top shelf and find this! What is left of the chocolate milk that was in the refrigerator.........Lets just say this Mom is a little perplexed as to how it walked into this cupboard! Garrett claimed he had no clue as he headed out the door to get on the bus this morning....So, that leaves a 20 year old and hubby! Hopefully by the end of the day this mystery will be solved! Have you ever found anything this intriguing in your kitchen cupboards? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Boys And Ice Cream

OK~ I'm browsing through our library of family photos...I can't help to not smile when I see this photo. The boys made me a Birthday Card with this photo on it one year that said, "Ain't We Sweet?" Well, what can I say.....Love them dearly.  Check out the Diet Pepsi can in the background? It's definitely a fun, dated photo!  One that I will cherish forever! Now that these two are 20 and almost 16 AND they tower over me...this makes me appreciate them all the more! Gotta love boys and ice cream~After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Bring on the Mud Festival

OK~ Winter can officially move on its Merry way....Time for the Mud Festival to begin!  There is actually, slush, slop, mud, and grass!  Iowa is gonna be hosting a great party~ a Mud Festival, very soon! Woo Hoo......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Spring Fever Has Struck

OK~ Spring fever has struck here in Iowa. The temps here in Northern Iowa rose into the 40's today with a  breeze. Some of my observations.......

  • Flip flops came out of the closets (not mine)
  • Shorts were being sported all around (not me)
  • The car windows were being rolled down (not mine)
  • The snow and ice is melting...Slush is abundant
It's interesting...when October rolls around and 40's hit, it's time to break out the gloves, coats, and scarves! But, when Spring fever hits, we can't wait to break out the Spring clothes.....I'm so ready for warmer temps and sunshine! Hard to believe we had below 0 temps a week ago~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

One thing I learned This Week

OK~ I learned that it is to our advantage, when it comes to the medical care of our family, to utilize the Emergency Room, and skip Urgent Care. Our hospital charged us an ER visit & a regular Dr. visit. I was always under the impression, that it's supposed to be cheaper to use these things called Urgent Care.  Fortunately, it has been several years since we had bronchitis, sore throats, fevers, and the like on a Saturday or Sunday.  Since we opted to use Urgent Care and NOT the Emergency Room, we have two bills. Makes no sense to me.....except a way for our hospital to generate revenue........Why have two bills, when an Emergency Room visit will generate one? If we are going to be charged for their services, we might as well use them. Next time this Mom will skip these so called "cheaper" office visits....Hopefully, we won't need to~but this Mom now knows how to save a few bucks...Use the Emergency Room and skip Urgent Care. An interesting thing that I learned this week, that's for sure! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Welcome To The Real World

OK~ Welcome to the real world, my beloved 20 year old son!  He makes an appointment to take his car into a repair shop....Here's the conversation....

Blaine:  "Mom, I'm taking my car in first thing in the morning."

Me:  "OK"

It's the next day, he arises at 11:00 a.m.  ~I tell him to text me when he gets the good word from the mechanic.

Blaine : "I'm so mad at this place. They told me to come back at 1:00 p.m. They didn't have time for me!"

This Mom is thinking, "Hello.....Welcome to the real world, First thing in the morning is NOT noon....from a mechanic's point of view, it's 7:30 a.m.- 8:00 a.m. " He then returns at 1:00 p.m. and they could not work him in.......Lesson learned- first thing in the morning is NOT noon and get a specific time! Unfortunately, he probably falls into line with many other 20 year old young adults.

Just goes to show that we all learn something new every day in life. This Mom learned that her young adult male does not grasp the concept of time and her young adult son learned that the world does not revolve around his schedule.......Uggghhhhh.....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

BUZZ by Katherine Ellison (Book Review)

OK~ I had the opportunity to review the book BUZZ, written by a Mom of a 12 year old son, nicknamed Buzz. It did not take me long to realize that I could have written this book. The similarities were unbelievable. I believe I was maybe on page three when I felt like I was looking in a mirror. My husband and I had always described our youngest son as search and destroy- the most strong willed boy you will ever meet. Well, I must say Buzz, gave our Garrett some hefty competition!

Just like the author of this book, Katherine, I too took both of my boys to numerous doctors for "that" diagnosis. After all, the Kindergarten teacher told me after our oldest son had 17 "Pink Slips" that he needed to be checked for ADHD.  So, I hauled him to the clinic and the Dr. looked at my son and I.....and then asked me, "Meds for school, daytime, summertime- When would you like Ritalin to take effect?" I explained to him that I was not there for medication, I was searching for help, as the Kindergarten teacher had suggested, needless to say; we left that office and never returned....An eye opener for this Mom...young and naive!  Oh, trust me, I am not as naive now, in regards to ADHD, ADD, and ODD...Yep, my boys have been labeled with all of the above at some point in their lives....

On to this book~ I highly recommend this book to every parent, grandparent, day care provider, teacher- quite frankly, anyone that deals with kids. Buzz's Mom took one whole year of her life to document her son's behaviors, her own behaviors, her bout with thyroid cancer ( how I can relate), her dealings with medications, her son's school, and the list goes on and on.

Once I started reading, I did not want to put this book down! I honestly feel Katherine is not alone in her battle. Society says our kids need a label.....Why? Katherine worked with some awesome people over the course of this year and continues to. She shares her honest observations and experiences through her writing. And you might laugh out loud a few times; I know I did! I know many parents will feel like I did...kind of like looking in a mirror as I read this moving book.

If you want to make a positive difference in the lives of the young people around you...I highly recommend that you take the time to read this book. You can order this book through the author's website...Katherine Ellison. Just released, October 5, 2010~ BUZZ is a book that you will want to read and it just may help you make a connection with that young person in your life!

*I did receive a copy of the book BUZZ for review purposes. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post or review. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Boys & Cars

OK~ I'm thinking of all of the car issues we have had since our 20 year old started driving.......Here's this Mom's shortened list~ I'm thankful (as of right now) that Garrett has no interest in driving......

  • Slashed tires
  • Flat tires
  • Crack up #1~taking out a stop sign
  • Crack up #2~ backing out of a driveway into some innocent man's truck......Reason to check what is parked on the street before you back out of a driveway in town
  • Crack up #3~ Turned left in front of another car
  • Rear ended by a teacher that had been drinking (Ok, I can let this one go)~ But had to go to court to hear the teacher plead guilty
  • Car motor sounds like it is racing
  • And all of the other incidents I can not recall at the moment

The lessons we have all learned~ A chain is a good thing to keep in the truck, as cars do not always go through the snow drifts on our Iowa road. A battery booster is great to have along! It's always helpful to let the car warm up before heading out of the driveway........Uggghhhhhhhhhhh~ I'm thinking those days of stumbling over all of the toys in the family room were great! What Does Your Kid Have?

OK~ If you are like most parents, your child has been labeled with something or as someone throughout their school days.  Maybe it's ODD, ADHD, ADD, athletic, smart, or something in between.  There's so many labels out there;  I have lost track. This Mom has heard 'em all.....Why do we have to have a label for every little things our kids do~ Is it society that says so? Really, now what is it? In all honesty, I don't see that any of these labels have helped my boys throughout their school days- in fact, I think it has done the opposite!  Who cares if my kid or your kid has tourettes syndrome, asperger's syndrome, or whatever the diagnosis is~ In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? I think it's important for our kids to be diagnosed by a physician if they do seriously have problems, but from the standpoint of fitting in and school performance...this Mom has not seen the good from it. I know we all stress awareness in the key, and I wish that it seriously did help~ I'm still looking to see how awareness helps the situation of most kids!

Now on another note I was saddened to speak with a parent this past week~ This Mom's child will not get the services that her child deserves from her child's school~And you ask why?  I was stunned. Her daughter does not have a label! This Mom is crying to get a label from a Doctor so her daughter can get the help that she needs from her teacher!  This is not only happening in Iowa, but all across the United States~Yikes......This Mom was stunned! For now, this Mom will keep plugging away and being a strong advocate for her boys! So, for the time being...I really don't think any of us really need to know what "your kid" has!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A Snow Day

OK~ I'm thinking it's a snow day for many across the country today. What amazes me that I always find out the news that school is closed for the day through Facebook...How do you find out about your school being closed for the day? I woke up to a local radio station stating a 2 Hour Delay....Well, as time got closer, I ventured out of my warm, cozy bed to the computer. One of my Facebook friends then posted that our local school district is closed for the day. So, at that point, out of curiosity, I bopped over to a local newspaper, turned on the tv, AND checked out another web site that the radio station recommended.  Nope, nothing there!  I'm telling ya...Facebook is where ya gotta go to get the news in the year 2011. Twitter is another place that I often turn to when it comes to getting the news, but guess what....the fail whale won't let me in!  I'll keep trying.

So, as I'm pondering that it's one hour until the bus is scheduled to arrive...Should I wake Garrett up now, or wait?  It was at that point, my little chat box popped up on Facebook~ it was Garrett! That's how a Mom knows she's living in 2011- He's in his bed and sending this message:

Is there school today?
Go Back To Sleep!
Have not seen or heard from him!

We are fortunate to be on the North edge of today's storm, as we were on the South side of yesterday's storm. The weather people are still saying the winds will be picking up later today.....Oh well...another Iowa Snow Day (Actually, our first one this year)! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
