Memorial Day 2011

OK~ Here's what's happening around the Broers household~Memorial Day 2011~ A time to be thankful for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, as well as a day to remember those that have passed on before us. We do have much to be thankful for.....

It's a very warm and windy day here in Iowa.....Not hammock weather...but it's weather for checking out what's going on.......Flowers in bloom and cats enjoying themselves...And Garrett, he's out in a field (yep, a field) helping his Uncle hand plant some field corn. Can't wait for his report! 16 year olds are young...they don't mind a little bit of work and dirt! I'm sure it was hot and dirty...lots of dust kicking up today! I'm thinking his clothes won't be as bad as they were with the dripping motor oil on them....BTW- they washed up great! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Birthday Parties

OK~ We were blessed to be able to attend the birthday party for our 5 year old nephew today. He has several cousins on the other side of the family that are 5 and under! The house was full of laughter, craziness, and just good old fun. It's amazing how the years fly by~ It seems just the other day I was sitting on the floor opening presents with one of my boys for their birthdays. And now they are 20 & 16!

Birthdays are special~ a wonderful time to celebrate! Sure, kids love to open presents~ but I truly believe the one thing that kids will always remember is everyone singing Happy Birthday to them. I watched Jadon as we all sang to him and he looked around at everyone of us~ Yep, I'm convinced- he had a great birthday party today and one he will remember the celebration for years to come.  He amazed me...He even opened the cards AND read them (or had a cousin read it)! Good times, great memories....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

An Interesting Day........

OK~ Here's how a Mom knows she is in for an interesting day. I head to the kitchen and meet my 16 year old son, in his underwear. Yep, his pants are headed towards the sink, along with his shoes. Drenched in oil........You gotta love boys, toys, and oil! Thankfully he did not parade through the house with oil dripping from his pants......This Mom loves living with a 16 year old boy- never a dull moment!

I then mentioned to him that he needed to find his Dad's sandals to wear around. He said, "Why?" My response, "I think you need a pair of shoes to wear to the shoe store to purchase a new pair of tennis shoes." Oh yeah....it's a great day! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Ummm......My computer crashed

OK~ I'm posting status updates, tweeting, and listening to music and then my computer is frozen.  The conversation goes like this.....

ME:  Wow, I can't move anything!
My Two Boys:  What did she do now?
ME:  I can't move the mouse.
Both boys come look at the computer
My Two Boys:  Mom, How many people do you know that have 12 windows open at one time?
ME:  MANY!!!!

Oh well..computer is back running. Not sure what I did. Seriously, is 12 windows too many? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

One can of cream style corn
One Box of Jiffy Corn Bread Mix

Easy, easy, easy!  If I can make this...anybody can! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The End of The School Year

OK~The end of another school year is wrapping up here in Iowa. This will be the 15th school year that has came to an end at this house~ We started in 1996 and it's now 2011, which makes 15 years, right? I really, really looked forward to the summer break with my boys when they were younger~ We spent days/hours at the local swimming pool and it wasn't even one of those fancy pools for most of the years....Just a pool with a couple water slides. It is now updated and a full fledged aquatic center.

I'm thinking.....this is what I am looking forward to at this point in my life

  • Sleeping past 6:00 a.m.
  • Reading a good book while hanging in a hammock
  • Spending a peaceful, warm day out on the lake
  • The start of a new school year in August, with two more years of high school to go (Towards the end of the month, something unusual here in Iowa)
My boys get older, I get older and life goes on and on; and I continue to be thankful for the things that I am able to experience. I am sure we will spend more than a few evenings at the local gun club shooting a few clay targets this summer, as well. Now, if sunshine and warmth would prevail~ this household would be a happy one! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Uggggghhh.....What a day!

OK~ My day wasn't going too bad, UNTIL I let Skipper outside. You know that cute black dog that I blogged about yesterday? Well, he did not destroy those beautiful lilacs, but he took off!  I had a gut feeling that he was down the road a little over a mile. About an hour after I had let him out I cruised down the road. Sure enough, there he was! He was chasing something that appeared to be a cat, go figure. I got a little closer to this house and he was "courting" a little dog. I kid you not, this dog was not as tall as Skipper's knees! I approached him and he chose not to get in the car, but to chase, and I mean chase this little dog. Both appeared to be having a good time............Long story short, Skipper is now pouting in his kennel, will be escorted outside on a leash ONLY, and should be tired! It's all in perspective.....Seriously, if it's not one of my boys up to something~ it's one of my dogs! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Sunday, May 22, 2011

OK~ If it's not a curious teenager or young adult at this house...It's Skipper! These lilacs are really coming around! They smell wonderful and the color is abundant. The smell of Spring has now arrived in Iowa. Now, if I can only keep this black dog out of 'em! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Trapshooting is a Sport for both boys and girls

OK~ Our family has been very busy this Spring with the Iowa High School Trapshooting season in the state of Iowa. We have several boys, as well as girls on our high school team; and I must introduce you to one of the inspiring young ladies on our team....Hannah!

Hannah is a Freshman and this is her first year on the team! Just a month ago on April 9th, she smashed a total of 14 out of 50 targets at one of our meets.....And through her hard work, dedication to tracking and smashing each target~ She hit 36 targets this past week at a meet and placed 3rd!  Check out that medal! (She was not the only girl from out team that placed~ our girls took 1st, 2nd & 3rd place)! Hannah is an example of- "If you put your mind in the game, want to have fun while improving your score~ good things will come!"

Doesn't that smile just motivate you to get out and accomplish something you have been wanting to try? Our high school trapshooting team is blessed with wonderful volunteer coaches, boys/girls that want to be involved in an extra-curricular activity and every member of the team shoots at every meet! Trapshooting is a sport where there are no bench warmers or kids on the team for that "just in case" moment. A sport that these boys/girls can partake in for many years to come. Hannah is a great example- she has stuck it out and is becoming a more confident person!

As you can tell, this Mom is a big supporter of Iowa High School Trapshooting. I see lifelong skills being learned- from self discipline to patience. I do wish all of our schools would see the value in this sport. Many boys and girls are excelling and becoming more confident individuals, due to their success in trapshooting. If a school administrator would take the time to check out just ONE practice, I think they would be able to see the value of this sport! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Dreaded Fast Food Drive-Thru

OK~ Three reasons why this Mom says GRRR when Garrett requests a cruise through the Drive-Thru. We all know that 16 year old boys can eat, eat, eat, and eat!

  1. Straws must be an after thought- Why is it that more than 50% of them time we order a pop, we don't get a straw? Therefore, one of us has to tromp into the restaurant to get one! Lesson learned- get the extra exercise and go into the restaurant to place your order!
  2. A hamburger without the hamburger...yes, this has happened to this family! A hamburger with no meat, a bun, ketchup and onions just doesn't cut it!
  3. "Oh, you want a chicken sandwich? That will be an extra seven minutes!" That's when our order changes rather quickly.
Drive-Thrus are just that...a drive thru! There is really nothing fast about them, although I will admit I do like them when it is below 0 outside!  An afterthought- Why does the order taker ask us if we would like any condiments, when we usually never see them! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Life Was A Lot Simpler BEFORE Cell Phones....

OK~ This Mom is frazzled! One visit in person to the cell phone service store and one phone call a day later, AND I now think we are now set.  Here's the dilemma.......Sixteen year old reports that he has no cell phone service, but the rest of us do. So, off to the cell phone store we go. A few minutes later I learn that his service has been suspended, as he had met his quota for the billing cycle in regards to data...Ummmm- Ok, I guess we wait for a couple days and service is returned.  And you know what? No major complaints about not having a working cell phone~ goes to show that a 16 year old CAN live without a cell phone!

And then our 20 year old loses his phone, AGAIN.....A phone call later and he's hooked up to a cell phone that works. The customer service that I received from our cell phone company was very good- just wasn't something I had planned on dealing with or had the time to tackle!  Life really was a lot simpler before cell phones entered our world~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

I'm Liking This.....

The Month of May

OK~ Why is it that it seems everything happens in May? Yep, the month of May! "G" turned 16- Woo Hoo! One Bridal Shower down for the season....several high school graduations to attend, a couple college graduates in the family (the month of May, of course), weddings, Confirmation, high school sporting events, planting a garden in 40 degree temps, and the end of the school year ...Oh, and then there is Memorial Day~And Wally's birthday is even in May!

How does a Mom fit all of this in? Well, this Mom is just rolling right along with all of the fun and chaos, as I know May will become fairly quiet in a few years.....Or maybe not! I'm thinking some of these events should be moved to a "quiet" month, like January! Anybody in? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School Bus Safety

OK~ School bus safety is something that many of us take for granted. In North Iowa, this past week; a seven year old little girl was struck and killed while attempting to go to school for the day. Three important safety tips that all of us need to remember:

  1. When a school bus has yellow lights that are flashing...this means you need to slow down and prepare to stop!
  2. When the arm is out that clearly says "STOP"- this means you MUST stop!
  3. Anytime you are around a school bus.....take note.....kids are nearby!

For whatever reason, a motorist did not slow down or stop for this particular bus. It's very sad to think that an innocent little girl left all of us way too soon, due to someone not seeing this yellow bus. Take note- anytime you are around a yellow school bus- pay attention- our kids are depending on each of us to see that they arrive at school safely each day. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Ugghhhh.....Can't Get the cart!

OK~ Am I the only Mom on this planet that struggles with carts at the store? Seriously, the last three times I have went to the store...It's not cart number one, not cart number two, but it's cart number three or four that I can get out of the stack. Why do these crazy carts stack together so tight, that a Mom has to look like Wonder Woman trying to obtain just ONE cart! Just a message to retailers...if you have carts- please have them easy to use! That's all I'm saying............After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Happy 16th Birthday, "G!"

OK~ Garrett is 16 today! Where have 16 years went?

  • Hours spent playing in a sand box
  • Cub Scout/Boy Scout Camp Outs
  • Sunday School
  • Hunting with Wally
  • School, school, and school
  • High School Trap Shooting
Yep, the years have flown by. I am recalling the night Garrett decided to whittle a piece of paper- a fine thing to do with a stick while on a Boy Scout camp-out, not a fine thing to do within the four walls of his bedroom. An Emergency Room visit........

And then I recall the night on a Boy Scout campout- Garrett and a couple other Boy Scouts designed their own route back to the camp site. Well, thankfully a NICE neighbor to the Boy Scout camp gave them a ride back to the camp!

And then there was the time Garrett blew out a flaming marshmallow~ Yep, another Emergency Room visit......The flames got the best of his lips!

Mr. Search and Destroy is growing up! This Mom is a the midget in the house~ everyone else is way over 6 feet tall. I guess I'll hang out and enjoy what life has to toss our way and know that I am doing the best that I can. You know, being a Mom is a great job, and as we all know how HARD it is! Seriously, Garrett, I do wish you would smile for the camera....

Happy Birthday to the baby in my house! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Country Inn Clive~A Huge Thank You For Sponsorship

OK~ I must share. Through twitter I was able to find this really nice hotel, Country Inn and Suites, located in Clive, Iowa. My family and I had the delight of staying there in November of 2010, and experienced a cozy night's stay. I am very thankful that Country Inn Clive sponsored me when I attended the 140 Character  Conference in Des Moines this past Monday.

This warm and inviting hotel provided me with a cozy, clean room; and a very nice hot breakfast! I highly recommend this hotel if you are traveling through or spending a few days in the Des Moines area. The hotel staff was very friendly and made the experience all the better!

Here's the view when I entered the room~ NICE!

The bathroom was clean and well stocked!

The King Size Bed was inviting and very comfy!

And the amenities of home....Microwave, coffee pot, sink and the like!

A great place to stay.... So, if you are in the Des Moines area, do connect! The employees of this hotel are top notch and will make your stay a memorable one (in a good way)! You can hook up with this hotel @CountryInnClive on twitter ~ I promise you, you will enjoy their tweets and appreciate their updates on twitter! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I was provided a King Suite for one night~I am very appreciative that Country Inn Clive provided sponsorship for me to speak at the 140 Conference in Des Moines. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

My House Literally Went To The Dogs

OK~ I left town for approximately 24 hours. Here's a re-cap of what happened during this time frame:

  • Garrett went to Grandma's house without everything he needed
  • Garrett tried to return home to get a few things
  • Garrett found the house locked
  • The spare keys were with both parents
  • The other set of Grandparents had a key that no longer worked
  • Wally & Skipper claimed ownership to to the puppy chow that I made for Monday's Mohawk Trapshooting Meet.
Now seriously, I am thankful that our house was locked. And you know what? I slaved over that puppy chow! I'm thinking these two clowns thought the puppy chow was theirs.

I'm thankful that they did not eat all of the puppy chow....I think it is fair to say that they "get it" when it comes to puppy chow.  If it is called puppy chow and you are a dog, "Chow down!" After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Infiniti Pro by Conair Spin Air Brush~ Product Review

OK~ I seriously wondered if I would be able to use this product. If you have been searching for a new spin to your hair styling routine~ Here it is!

After I figured out which button made the brush rotate the way I needed it to, I was fine. I would recommend knowing and understanding what each button does before you use it. I did not. I thought it would be very easy to use. Once I realized that knotting my hair up, was not the answer, I then paid attention to which button did what!

Once I figured out what each button did~ this product was very easy to use! It not only dried my hair, but it also gave my hair a ton of volume. Now, if you want to tone down the volume a little bit, just use a little bit of your favorite hair gel, run it through your hair and you should have salon styled hair; right out of your home! Another great plus~with this product, you have it all in one. I did not find myself juggling a hair dryer and a brush~ simple to use once I figured out what each button did!

You can even dry your hair without the spin function, if you choose.  You can choose from 3 heat settings and 2 speeds. Left handed, or right handed, it does not matter. This product is designed with every user in mind.

You can find the Infiniti Pro by Conair Spin Air Brush at many mass market and drug store retailers, as well as The Conair Store On-line with an average retail price of $59.99.

*I was given an Infiniti Pro by Conair Spin Air Brush for review purposes. I was not given any monetary compensation for this review and the opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Why I Love Social Networking......

OK~ I am thankful that I had the opportunity to speak at the 140 Character Conference in Des Moines today~ lots of new connections! It was nice to put a person's face with their twitter handles. So, what is it about this world of social networking (notice I'm not using the word media) that makes it what it is? Here's this Moms take on why social networking is so great!

  • Many people in Social (there's a reason it's referred to social) Networking love to talk!
  • I have met people in the past couple days that actually talk more than I do!
  • I love meeting new people and thanks to Twitter, Facebook, and just heading out and about in small town Iowa, there's always someone new to meet up with.
These are just three reasons that I love Social Networking~ Oh yeah...and this blog!  It is a great way for me to share what living in Iowa is like, what it's like to have teens/young adults in the family & blogging is therapy for me on days that I need to vent, share, or just want to write. So, if you took the time to get to this sentence, I thank you for supporting me in my blogging adventures. It is you, the reader, that makes this so much fun!

A fun filled day of Social Networking and a high school trapshooting meet~ What more could this Mom want? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Things I Learned This Past Week

OK~ Life is great.....More than 22 phone calls from one son in less than 10 minutes...Ummm~ We have an issue! It's interesting how a 20 year old can become resourceful when it comes to locking HIS keys, in HIS car. Here's a re-cap of this past week ( I really did learn 3 things)!

  1. Young adults can become independent!
  2. My dogs snore very loud, especially that black dog named Skipper..
  3. The laundromat is really not that bad of a place to do laundry.
It's been an interesting week~ traveling to the laundromat to wash a load of clothes, is not all that bad. I cannot get over how much cleaner my clothes are. That crazy front load washer that I did have..danced away from the wall too many times, and certainly proved to this Mom that it does not pay to spend a lot of money on a washing machine!  Never again....The next one will be one of the most inexpensive washing machine that I can find! Oh yeah..and I now have tulips (they are very colorful)! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mom~ You are a Fun Hater

OK~ This Mom now has the official title of "Fun Hater!" Mother's Day is tomorrow....no special day at this house. Today Garrett was discussing with his Dad what it is like to go very fast on the highway. I won't say how fast he was talking about going, but this Mom spoke up and said, "The speed limit on a road like this is 55 mph!" Ok, I got the eye roll and ," Geeshe, Mom...You are a Fun Hater! We can never have any fun with you around."  I guess not being of male gender, I don't get the car racing thing.......Ummmmm........ Yeah, I guess this takes me out of the running for Mother of the Year...again~After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

What I learned......

OK~ We all know how connected our kids/teens are to technology.....My almost 16 year old went five whole days without a cell phone this past week. Know what? He adjusted just fine! This household is living proof that it can be done! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

May....The View In My Yard

OK~ Spring has sprung! How's the view in your yard?

And then this is what was in and out of my yard today! Farmers are out in full force in Iowa~ Corn and Soybeans will be planted in abundance over the course of the next few weeks. It's a little late this year....but you know what, I kind of like the sights of Spring!

How's Spring looking where you are? Are these sights familiar to you? My family is so accustomed to seeing all of this that it's really nothing different......But I can guarantee you that this Mom is sooo ready to pack away the long underwear, but with another high school trap shooting meet on the family calendar this coming week-end, she's not packing them away! Just this past Monday, our kids shot in 36 degree temps, with a cool, brisk wind out of the North.

This Mom is just gonna kick back, take it all in, and let Spring happen.......The lilac bushes will be colorful and plentiful (I hope)! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Teacher Appreciation Week- May 2-6th, 2011

OK~ Have you thanked a teacher lately? Teachers are people that impact the lives of our children on an everyday basis......I was blessed to have some very, very good teachers~ Some of my favorite were from Madison Elementary, in Mason City, Iowa! In 2009, my classmates and I held a little get-together and we were blessed to have four teachers present!

Mrs. Stahl was a 5th Grade Teacher that we all enjoyed~ Doesn't she look great?

The fact that these four teachers were willing to spend an evening with myself and classmates, meant a lot to each of us! Miss Ramsey was a 1st/2nd  Grade Teacher, Miss Rawding was a 1st/2nd Grade Teacher & Mr. Billings was a 5th/6th Grade Teacher. It was a lot of fun to reminisce with these awesome teachers...they brought many fond memories with them!

I'm thankful for teachers that supported me through the years AND thankful for those that have "put up" with my two boys...Now, I'm pondering- What all did these teachers have to put up with? I learned that a classmate of mine (I won't point fingers) put gum in my hair - How do I not remember that?

It's Teacher Appreciation Week 2011- Let the teacher's in your life know how much they are appreciated! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Board Games....

OK~ I'm thinking about board games...Monopoly, Life, Scattergories, and Scrabble. Does anyone play these on actual boards anymore? I've noticed more and more people are playing these so called board games on their smart phones, iPods, iPhones, and laptops...So, can we still call them board games or are they digital games?

Personally, I do think that board games are a great way for families to spend time together. It's nice to sit down, look at each other (most of the time) and chat! Although, I know we have played Scrabble on a couple different computers, in different rooms of the house- all four of us~ it was fun, but not like an actual board game! So, are you and your kiddos still dragging the boards out of the closet or are you hitting "download?" You know, there probably is an "ap" for this one and that one!

Just wondering...........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Life Just Keeps A Going

OK~ Life happens, it really does. Three things that I realized within the past 7 days......

  1. There are 24 hours in each day~ No more & No less.  What's wrong with this picture? This Mom really, really needs an extra couple hours here and there. Should be a simple request, right?
  2. My boys can talk to each other~ Yep, as both boys were packing up Blaine's things there was actual conversation between the two! Could it be that living in the same house together made them zip their lips?
  3. Life is really short~ From 15 years to 101, life is simply too short. Our community was reminded (again) of how fragile life really is. With the passing of three students in my son's high school, during this school year- God reminded us again- Hug your kids and tell them you love them!

So, the past 7 days have been eventful. Four visits to our Eye Dr., a washing machine that has conked out, and Blaine has officially moved out! And of course, it only took him two days before he locked himself out of his new place! He should be thankful that his Mother was smart enough to make herself a key to his place.......It was Mom to the rescue! Wonder how he feels about that eye roll he gave me when we went to have that key made? Oh yeah...and that crazy front load washing machine~ NEVER, NEVER again...I'm returning to the cheapest, most simple washing machine I can find on the market! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
