I Am Embracing Fall.....

OK~ I have now officially embraced Fall. I have accepted the fact that I will appreciate the colorful trees and the  corn stalks that are blowing I know that crazy white stuff will be flying before I know it. I am seriously looking forward to what we Iowans refer to as "Indian Summer."  We have 70's and sunshine in the forecast here next week~ Woo Hoo!  Give this Mom some sun and she's one happy Mom!

For now, the combines and tractors are all around. The farmers are welcoming a plentiful harvest, as well as nice weather to bring the crop in! Life is good here in Iowa. I hope you are embracing the beautiful colors that accompany this time of year....So, get out and enjoy it! Wow, it's already October 1st tomorrow- that crazy calendar just keeps moving right along. The Traveling Germs Have Arrived......

OK~ This Mom is tired of coughing, sniffling, sore throats, body aches....and everything that goes with it. This is the end of September and I have already invested in three cans of Lysol throughout the course of the last week. So, I am pondering...What will the flu season be like this year? Not sure if I even want to think about it! So far, I think I have avoided it this time around. I do wonder, does all of that Lysol and hand sanitizer really help? We are really good about using hand sanitizer everywhere and have been all summer~ So, maybe that's not a good thing.  Now, to keep myself healthy, and get everyone else in this household back on the mend~ For now, I am forced to deal with the traveling germs and somehow figure out how to stop them in their tracks! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Home Remodeling Project- Fall Contest Entry

OK~ Home remodeling projects are always very interesting. One of them that I love to share with others is my laminate countertop. We had an older countertop ~ Here's a glimpse of all I care to remember about it.

For a relatively small amount of money, we were able to transform our kitchen countertop to this....

Home remodeling projects always test my patience, as I am not a patient person. But in this particular case, I am glad that I found some patience. Within a matter of days, around four~ we had a new countertop. We do not have much countertop space, so the actual countertop materials were not very expensive. For under $300.00, since we are DIY project people, this was possible. In all reality, I should say my husband is a DIY project person, not me!  He has the patience and the skills to get this type of project done, I simply do NOT!

I am glancing through the large selection of laminate flooring over at Bestlaminate, and I can tell you there are several floors that I think would look very nice in my kitchen. Mannington Laminate flooring in the Restoration Historic Oak looks like it would compliment my kitchen countertop nicely. We currently have a light oak laminate floor in this kitchen, and I really feel that a darker shade would compliment the cabinetry and the laminate countertop. And I do realize, that I simply cannot have everything at once!

The beauty of my new kitchen countertop is that it is affordable and it literally transformed my kitchen. My kitchen now has a warm and inviting atmosphere. Before it was cold and it looked ancient. It's interesting how times change and it's also amazing to me that the old countertop was in as good shape as it was...We did the math- it had to be more than 30 years old. So, are we taking bets?  Any doubt that this new countertop will last another 30+ years? Well...this Mom is just gonna kick back, continue to enjoy her new laminate countertop and take it all in. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I did not receive any product or monetary compensation for this post.  I did post this Fall Contest Entry over on Bestlaminate Flooring's Facebook Page.

Homework~ We've Came A Long Way

OK~ I seriously crashed last night when I got home, after all, planning a social media conference is a lot of work, but fun! But, I was so pleased to come home to a 16 year old boy doing his homework....Yep, this was such a welcome change.

About three years ago I mentioned to someone that I was so tired of having to sit with my son, making sure that he was getting his homework done. They commented, "Oh, I have to do that too!"  I then said, "Do you have to sit right there?"  They said, "NO!"  I then made it very clear that I had to sit right next to him- their definition of making sure their kids were doing their homework was being  home and in the same house!  My definition was physically sitting right next to him~ AND after doing this for several years, this Mom was burned out......

Ahhhh....this Mom is thinking that her dedication has paid off~ just maybe!  Fingers crossed...So pleased to see my youngest son maturing into a fine young man... After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

He took a Step and WHAM!

OK~ I'm outside and hear cuss words coming out of my 16 year old son's mouth!  I'm thinking, "Geeshe...What on earth?"  Well, I would have loved to have been a mouse in the corner.  He opened a door in one of our out buildings and stepped on a rake. Mind you, the rake swung up and smacked him in the face! Todd immediately hollered, "Clark Griswold, what are you up to?"  Attacked by the rake...He must be related to his Mother, as it sounds like something that would happen to me! He seriously took a step and WHAM~After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Harvest Time

OK~The combines are rolling and it looks to be another bountiful harvest this Fall in Iowa.

The seasons change so quickly and I must admit, I do miss all the green that surrounds us during the summer here in Iowa. And time goes on..After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Official ~Fall Has Arrived

OK~ It's official~ Fall has arrived- AND I do not like it, but will embrace it! This seems to be the best, if only, option that I have......But, in the meantime, I will continue to try not to wear the enclosed shoes, wool socks, winter gloves, and coats~ Yikes- I just realized, it I was wearing all of the above in Iowa during Summer 2011! Yep, the best thing to do....Embrace it!

The Membership At The Gym.....

OK~ I am a regular attendee at my local YMCA...all year long! Do I always WANT to go?  NO~ but I know that I need to keep flexible and keep my muscles in check. I've been wondering.....If you pay for a monthly membership at your local gym...How many times a month do you have to use it to consider it worth the purchase? My hubby and I go 5-6 days a week, so we feel like we easily get our $62.00 a month out of it. And since it's the YMCA, we also have access to a therapy pool, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and more.

What's intrigued me all summer long....Do people continue to pay the monthly membership and not go? As the attendance has not picked up, once it dropped off in May, we've had our choice of machines for almost five months now...No complaints from this Mom, but it makes me wonder where everyone went? January-March was an absolute zoo in that place! And yes, that was during the time that I observed to women fighting over an elliptical machine~ I know, childish, right? Maybe everyone just does their exercise outside, but we kind of like to do both.......I'm thinking we must be the strange ones of the bunch!

And just the other day another regular attendee commented to us on how great we looked! He commented that we looked so much better than when we started going there regularly~ over 18 months ago....Geeshhheee...Did we look that bad?  He gave Todd & I great conversation as we left the YMCA that day.

Oh well.....I know it's what we need to do, so we will keep going! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ Here's this Mom's take on laundry (looking in through the outside) in regards to my 20 year old son!

  • 1/2 an hour should be enough time to wash/dry work clothes, right?  Wrong!
  • Wet work clothes do not look enticing
  • There is a setting for large, medium & small loads (Really, just a shirt & pants- a large load)?

Well....I was not home to witness his departure from the house today. I am envisioning one drippy, wet young man! I can tell you that the clothes dryer in this house does not do well drying non-spun clothes! lessons like these are the best! I'm anxious to hear his side of this laundry ordeal today. Homework...What's That?

OK~ Garrett is working on a homework assignment, or at least attempting to. Todd and he are brainstorming.  Here's the conversation:

Me:  Any ideas?

Garrett:  No, he isn't any help either.

Me:  Maybe you two should turn South Park off?

Todd:  No, we might get our ideas from South Park!

I'll have to update everyone as to how this assignment turns out!

OK....This Mom gives up........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Apple Pie

OK~ I'm really not much of a cook, but I think I did OK with this little project! We had an abundant amount of apples in Iowa this year, and we have a few boxes of these sitting around.

So, it was time to whip up an apple pie...Seriously, when you use one of these crusts from Pillsbury, it really is simple!

I sliced up 6 apples - don't they look yummy?

I then mixed 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon, 1 tsp. salt and a dash of nutmeg~ Blended it with the apples. After I had these combined, I rolled out the pie crusts....very easy to use (as you can see)

Once the crust was in place...I sprinkled a little bit of flour on the crust and tossed in the apple/sugar mixture.

I then rolled Pillsbury pie crust #2 on top of this filling and placed it in the oven for 50 min. at 440 degrees!  And here it is.....

An apple pie.....10 min. prep time and 50 min. in the oven......15 minute to cool down and it's time to enjoy! Now, if I can bake something like me, you can too! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Change of Seasons....

OK~ I'm really not ready for Fall to arrive, but I really have no choice. A record low of 27 degrees this morning~ just Monday it was 91 degrees!  My feet are not ready to slip into wool socks and closed in shoes in September~ they still want their sandals!

And then I have the request, "Where's the hand sanitizer?" Just a reminder that the season of ailments is also here. The coughing is driving me nuts in this house...and the sore throats......It's only September!

The combines will be rolling here very soon.  This was what the soybean fields around here looked like before the 27 degree temps- lots of color...not so much today...they are dying quickly.

Mother Nature has determined that our growing season in North Iowa has ended, too early in this Mom's opinion. On the sweet side of this....that crazy lawn mower can stay in the shed for 8 months and this Mom won't care! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Who Knew~ Apples And Bonding With a 16 Year Old Boy

OK~ I had picked a few apples off of one of our apple trees. This is what is left in the box this evening.

I asked Garrett to help me freeze some apples for pies/apple crisp. He was more than willing to help me out, but unwilling to have his picture taken helping me!  It was a GREAT bonding experience~ Love it that my 16 year old son would say YES to helping me with this project. Tomorrow, after school, he is going to help me pick apples from the trees. We may have a hard freeze tomorrow night, so I'm thinking we should get the apples that we can.  Here's what we made!

We sliced 5/6 apples (per bag) .....3/4 cup sugar, lemon juice, dash of nutmeg, spoon of cinnamon and 1 1/2 TBLSP Cornstarch and placed the mixture in a quart size bag! Hopefully,we will have apple pie or apple crisp this winter!  Very easy project~ especially when my 16 year old son was willing to assist~ the project went rather quickly! And the was interesting! We had a little bit of cinnamon over here, sugar over there...OH well....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

I Am A Mom~ AND, I Will Show Up

OK~ I am a Mom - the most important job of my life. I am a Mom and I will watch out for your kid. If I see another kid bullying your kid...I will call the officials and I will call you to let you know what I observed (on and off school grounds).

I am a Mom- therefore; I will show up at Back To School Night, School Board Forums, and PTO Meetings....Oh yeah, and then there are the Committee Meetings within the organizations that my son is involved in. If you are a Mom, I truly hope you take your turn- it does take a community to raise our kids! Can you tell where I've spent a lot of time the past couple weeks?

And you know what? In a couple years- I will have spent 16 years of my life on the PTO. In the grand scheme of things, that is really a short period of time. And then there were 10 years along the way in Cub Scouts (Cub Master)  and Boy Scouts (Assistant Scout Master) - You see, being a Mom to boys brings new opportunities~ as a girl, I was not allowed to be a Boy Scout, but as a Mom, I sure was!  As long as I know that I have tried, made a difference in the lives of A child along the way; this was time well spent.

I've read several different blog posts of how so many Moms feel so busy and too tired to serve on their PTO's or attend Back To School Night- Many women feel unwelcome when they attend their PTO meetings- I can say I have been blessed to have great women AND men working side by side in our local school district on the different PTO's in the different schools I have been involved in. I attend the meetings, pitch in where I can, and let the crumbs fall where they may! I don't take anything personal.....after all; this organization is about the kids- it's not about Moms/Dads. Sure, Moms and Dads work within the organization, but the outcome is to benefit the kids.

I am a Mom...And I am proud to say that a fellow classmate of my 16 year old said to me the other day, "Oh No...That's Garrett's Mom- Poor Garrett! She means business!"  That tells me I must be doing something right! Garrett just rolled his eyes........After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

We Remember 10 Years..Sept. 11

My treasured pennant of the World Trade Center. Little did I know that when I purchased this more than 30 years ago, it would have such meaning that it does today. Being from Iowa...New York City was a sight for this Iowa farm family. I recall my parents discussing the fact that hamburgers were $1.00- yes $1.00 in the World Trade Center. And, I remember them saying, "Oh, we will have $1.00 hamburgers in Iowa before we know it!"  Wow~What a different time!

The heroes, families that lost loved ones, and the freedoms that we all lost on that day....How can we forget? Our country is strong and this day pulled our country together in a way that I don't think any of us would have ever imagined. We, as Americans, have adjusted the way we live~ but, in the grand scheme of things....We are safe and proud to say that we live in the United States of America!

Sept. 11, 2001~ Now Sept. 11, 2011~ 10 Years later and more proud than ever to say that I live in the United States of America and am a citizen of this great country! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

So, What IS This?

OK~ It's supper time....And I have chosen to actually cook a meal. After I went out to fire up the grill and realized that there was no gas for the grill, I had to move to plan B. I had bought these seasoned baby back ribs at the local meat counter this afternoon. I saw them, they looked good, and the guy behind the meat counter said, 10 minutes on the grill and they are good to go!  Sounded simple to me.

Well, on to Plan B. At that point I had no Plan B, but found one. I quickly googled broiling baby back ribs. There was not a lot of information on broiling this type of rib, but I thought I'd give it a go. Turned out, it worked out fine.

I kid you not, I have cottage rolls~ fresh from the bakery~ and one of the boys (the oldest one) says, "What are these?"  I gave him the eye roll and said, "Rolls."

Well, and then it's on to boy #2, who is 16. What is this? Well, those are potatoes. He then helped himself to several helpings.

Oh yeah, and those baby back ribs, no comments on what they were (Thankfully). And yes, you can broil them, and they were ok. Now, keep in mind I am not a good cook. And the potatoes~ not many left for leftovers out of a 9x13 pan- with three of us eating. And then there were those rolls. Two of them were eaten, I had one and the oldest boy had one....

So, "What IS This?" I seriously hope I don't hear this again, when the food is, in my opinion, recognizable. Have you ever heard of anyone not knowing what a roll with a little bit of flour on it was? Oh well, in my house, you never know what's going to be said....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

And The Price Is.....

OK~ I'm in two major retail stores today. I look at all the items on the shelf where the signs are placed and all the items are the same. I get to the check out and the price is totally different. The excuse at both stores, "We are sorry, these were just put out."  Well, I do understand that. But, having worked in retail management through 10 years of my lifetime~ I do get the concept~ If you put the merchandise out, you better have your signage ready to go.  And, price, is probably more prevalent today than it was from 1985-1995. Sure, people were price conscious in that time period, but more so even today.

Now, one would think that with all of this wonderful technology that we have today, signage would not be a problem. Maybe, we are all getting a little too dependent on technology and we need to head back to the basics. Eye contact is very important to me, as well as that face to face conversation. In my eyes, if you run a retail store~ make sure your signage is correct! I have had time to think of this....I totally understand why so many people shop online. Think about it....You know what the price is and there is NO question as to what the price is when you "hit" the purchase button.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Joys of Carts and Parking Lots (NOT)

OK~ I'm out and about this morning. While parking my car, I notice six shopping carts just sitting randomly throughout the parking lot. I always make a point to put the car in the cart corral, cart it back into the store, or if I'm blessed to have someone walk by and say, "I'll take that," I pass the cart to them.

Are we that lazy in our society that we can't do something as simple as returning something to where it belongs? And there are times that the wind is blowing and it is very cold out, but I still make a point to secure the cart I have been using. Or, is it that we simply do not care? I don't know about you, but I really do not want a shopping cart ramming into the side of my car due to weather conditions, while I'm shopping inside a store. I have always made sure the shopping cart that I have used is in a secure place before I depart the parking lot. Now, I do understand that it is possible for one to escape from the cart corral, but six~ this Mom doesn't think so.

My boys have often commented through the years, "Mom, why do you always put the cart back?" I tell them that it is the right thing to do. When they were younger they would look around and ask me, "What about those carts?" And we wonder why our kids are the way they are?  Helllooooo- it's time for us adults to get our act together! Tomorrow Is A New Day....

OK~ Three reasons why I am ready for a New Day......

  1. I'm beginning to realize that one committee that I am on is one of the most organized on the planet~ in comparison to the office staff that I have encountered today.
  2. Our four little kittens really do not need a stare down from Wally- he's a big dog!
  3. A record low this morning of 37 degrees~ It's time to go back to night time lows in the 60's!
Oh well......I made it through the day. Another school schedule change for my son and life will be good! Just once, it would really, really be nice if Garrett could start the school year off with a schedule that works......Thankfully, he rolls with the changes and his teachers are understanding. Walking Beans

OK~ I wrote a Blog Post about Garrett's clothes turning green while walking beans....The questions arose from several of you, "What is walking beans?"  Well, it involves walking through a field of soybeans, just like this one! And you may ask, "Why?" The reason is pretty simple- remove all and any unwanted weeds...Which means anything that is not a soybean, you pull it! And there are not rows in these fields, as they are drilled in. So, that makes the job all the more fun! But hey, when you are 16 years old, and love the outdoors....A 16 year old has to love it, right?

I grew up walking a lot of bean fields, which evolved into riding a bean bar. A bar placed on the front of the tractor with a chair on it and then we would spray the weeds. The weeds that Garrett has been pulling are resistant to the weed killer that Farmer Uncle Jeff had been using. So, it's back to walking those beans, pulling those weeds, and hiring a 16 year old boy to do the job!  You gotta love Iowa~A little work never hurt anyone......I'm not sure that Garret knew what he was in for when he said, "Yes," but he now knows! Labor Day Week-end Is Here...

OK~ Labor Day Week-end is upon us....Are you working, taking it easy...What are you up to? I can remember when I was growing up and Labor Day Week-end on Sunday mornings was something I looked forward to. Our minister always recommended that we wear our "work" clothes to church on Sunday Morning. And, when I was younger, we always had to wear dress clothes to church~ that meant a dress, tights, etc.....Not what is acceptable today...Only on the Sunday of Labor Day Week-end did we see pants, jeans (farm families loved this), and maybe even a pair of work boots for fun.

We are now a much more casual society, and I'm not really sure how Labor Day falls into the lives of all of us today. Our family has been spending the past 6 days and 1 more at National Trapshooting Meet at the Stockdale Gun Club, near Ackley, Iowa~ So, we are working, raising money for Garrett's high school trapshooting team! And, of course, my husband has to work tomorrow- Labor Day- how appropriate! Garrett and I will be scoring and loading traps for many awesome trapshooters AND Todd will be heading to his "job."And, of course, our 20 year old son will be working too!

So, what are you up to on this holiday week-end? It's truly a labor filled one at the Broers household!  A fairly normal day for us......After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My Age Must Be Showing

OK~ I"m outdoors watching my son shoot wobble targets. I'll confess, I think that's what it's called, but they are really crazy flying clay targets. It's dark and raining~ and Garrett is having fun! This really nice lady was chatting with me about the trap shooting events of the week, etc. AND then she says, "Is that your other son?" I'm like, "Ummmmmm.....That, is my husband!" Geeshe....Is my hair really too dark? You know, I did color it and there is currently no gray in it AND it was dark outside, right? Oh well, I'm still digesting this comment. This lady was very nice and apologized several times. Oh well...I'm just a Mom trying to learn the ins and outs of trapshooting.....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Look What I Found Today

While outside today, I heard a little "meow." I found four little kittens~ Looks like they are pretty good size. Living in the country in Iowa~ there's always a surprise around every corner!  Now, this little grey kitty is very cute...Love the blue eyes ~ I know they will change fast and those gorgeous blue eyes will be green or whatever color you call a cat's eyes! Oh well..Now, to keep the dogs away from these cute little kittens! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Still Summer~ How To Keep Your Body In Check

OK~ My body has been tested in several ways this week~ Gotta love that good old Iowa weather. Tuesday, it was pushing 60 degrees, I was outside all day ~ in the rain! I ended up looking like a drowned rat. I was scoring at a National Trap Shooting Meet~ yep, we do have those in  Iowa~ The Heartland Grand.

I saw many awesome shooters, met some grumpy shooters, and helped my son's high school trapshooting team raise some money. Now, on to today....It's two days later and when I hopped in my car, it said 95 degrees~ Now, that is not with all of the humidity in the air! So, how does one stay cool near the end of August in Iowa.

  1. Keep those tank tops out~ The stores have been saying sweater weather for six weeks, but it's really not here yet!
  2. Drink, drink, drink lots of water~ It really does keep a headache at bay!
  3. Pray for a breezy day~ Yep, the breeze today kept things a little better while basking on that scoring chair in the blazing sun!
And these high school kids~ they just roll with it! Heat, sweat, and muck~ they stepped up to the plate and made it through the day. This group of teens rolled with the heat better than us whiny adults!

So, the weather man says 70's for the week-end. But you know what, I'm still keeping my tips on how to stay cool close at hand. In Iowa, as many other states, it's best to look outside for the weather report, as it is usually more accurate than those computer generated reports!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
