Arrowhead Lodge & Resort~ Lake Kabetogama

OK~ A little different summer vacation for us. Fishing and staying at Arrowhead Lodge & Resort~ Lake Kabetogama, Minnesota.  This Lodge & Resort is right in Voyaguers National Park (Now, that's a whole other post) and its absolutely beautiful!

Here is the lodge.....We stayed at one of the campsites. Keep in mind, you must have a self contained unit~ there are no shower facilities available.  We were here in August ~ The lodge is open year round, as we were told the fishing is spectacular in the spring and fall, as well as the fall foliage. Winter brings in the snowmobile enthusiasts! But, for us, August was a fun time to visit.  Garrett was proud of the fish we caught!

Now, the experienced (older) fishermen of the crew, were not proud of the catch. But hey, I saw it as supper on the table! I was happy to catch A fish!

The scenery is beautiful! The lodge owners are very friendly and knowledgeable! So, next time you are planning a little family get-a-way "Up North!" Head to Arrowhead Lodge & Resort~ Lake Kabetogama, Minnesota. This Mom had a good time...you will too! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Apple Time....

Fall in Iowa....Its coming~ Here's another sign! The apples are crisp, ripe, and edible! It's amazing how this tree that was just four feet tall six years ago, is now this tall. It's taller than me and is really beginning to branch out. I'll probably have to have my 16 year old son pick the apples that are up in the tree....He's a lot taller than me and likes anything in the great outdoors. Now, I'm not sure about some of the interesting looking branches~ might be a weed....imagine that! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Signs That Fall Is Around The Corner

OK~ I'm glancing around today....the sweet corn patch is now chopped, our watermelon are very close to being ready to eat, and several Iowa cornfields around us are really losing their brilliant green color. And, those crazy buzzing locust things that we have been listening to for the past few weeks, are still buzzing in full force. What do all of these observations tell this Mom? Oh yeah, and then the beginning of a new school year begins this coming week. The good news, I do not recall the last time the big, yellow bus stopped at this house before 7:05 a.m.~ A pick up time of 7:23 a.m.~ This household likes that!
Fall will arrive, this Mom will adjust- she may not like it, but she will adjust! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Focus on What You Can Do~ Not What You Can't

OK~While sitting in the Dr. office yesterday, I overheard this conversation

Lady #1:  I sure hope I need more medicine.

Lady #2:  Me too.  I think medicine cures everything.

Lady #1:  I know I need more. I can't do anything.

Lady #2:  Me either. I can't do anything anymore

At this point, thankfully, my name was called. Now, I have been there...It's very easy to feel sorry for yourself and think medicine cures everything! I've said it before, "When it comes to your health, a lot of it is about attitude and how YOU tackle your mental game!" That means, you sometimes need to reach for your faith and step out of  your comfort zone. I understand that medicine is a necessity for many; but when you, as a person, are not taking any steps to try to get better, this saddens me. Life is too short to live on the pity train! Get out, enjoy life~ Make the best of it!

Even if you think you can't do anything~ Find something you can do. Take up a new hobby if you need to.  If you are not physically able to do the things that you used to do, find something new. Take up bird watching (hey, I used to think this activity was for really, really old people), read, write, do cross word puzzles, become the organizer for your children's/grandchildren's activities, or even play Angry Birds! If you find yourself on the pity train~ Hop off of it and enjoy life! Reach out to the positive people in your life, as they can help dig you out of the trenches!

Make the most of each day~ your family will thank you, including your kiddos! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School Needs To Start Now....

OK~ It's August 25, 2011, and it is time for Garrett be back at school. I can honestly say I have not heard, "I am Bored, for a long time." But, I have been asked, "Mom- Can you get me some popcorn chicken?" I looked at him- "Nope, get it yourself." It is truly amazing how a 16 year old boy can quickly learn how to open the freezer drawer, find a microwavable plate, cook the popcorn chicken, pour some bbq sauce, AND pour himself a glass of milk.

Now, I MUST remember that he can do all of this himself, as I fell into being his servant the other day. I hopped up and got him popcorn chicken...NOPE, not anymore!  It is time for school to start~ one week to go! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Back To School With Tiny Prints

OK~ As a Mom to two boys, one that has graduated from the school system, and another one that is entering his 11th Grade year of school~ I'm going to tell you that each school year brings new challenges, no matter what the grade! The #1 Tip that this Mom can give you is to get yourself and your kids ready for that "new" wake-up time. School bells ring very early in the morning and they can bring extreme body shock to your household, if you do not start re-syncing those body clocks a couple weeks before the school year begins. It's not always easy, but it sure pays off once that first morning of the new school year rolls around.

Tiny Prints offers many Back To School Supplies that will make your families school year a little brighter. You can find lunch box notes, activity cards, teacher appreciation cards, dorm decorations, moving postcards, and even family planners! Let me tell you, Tiny Prints has you covered from head to toe!

Maybe you have a family member that has just hit the college life~ Tiny Prints offers great Thinking of You Cards, which are perfect for the College Student. I have a nephew that is just starting out his four years at a University, which is four hours from home, and I know that he will be looking forward to getting mail~ Yes, actual snail mail! Again, Tiny Prints has you covered!

So, let Tiny Prints help you kick off the new school year, you will be glad you did! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I will receive a $50 Gift Card for compensation for participating in this Blog Campaign. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Junk Can Quickly Become Your Treasures

OK~ This is what was piled in one of our vehicles that had not been driven in a while. So, what does a 16 year old boy do? He tosses it all out and leaves it right in the yard! You ever have stuff like this? Well, there is a National Geographic magazine in there.....It's from 2009, not bad.  There is an orange hunting hat in that pile~Which I'm sure we will be on the hunt for when pheasant hunting season rolls around.  And, of course, a barely used snow/ice scraper. The key will be to put this in a usable spot. Work gloves and a set of nice, wool mittens! And of course, we have a flashlight~ something we are always on the hunt for. So, all of this stuff, looks like a pile of junk, when in fact this STUFF, is a pile of treasures that this household will find very useful! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Positive Ways I've Used Social Media

OK~ We all hear about the good, the bad, and the ugly- in regards to Social Media. Here's three positive ways that I have personally experienced Social Media in the past couple months.

  • I was on the hunt for a washing machine. I sent out a few tweets.....Great responses and advice. I found a coupon good at a national retailer- through a link on twitter. I went to make my purchase and the coupon was not honored. I purchased the washing machine, went home, and sent out a tweet. Within 30 minutes, this national company sent me a DM (Direct Message) and wanted my telephone number. They honored my coupon and appreciated my follow up.
  • We are having success growing watermelon in our garden. So, I sent out a few tweets.....Now, I know when the watermelon will be ripe and know that there are many others that have the same question (s) as I do.
  • Through Facebook I have connected with many relatives and the connections have been so good....that several are asking, "When is the next family reunion?"  Wow, who would have thought?
Oh yeah, and one more thing....the people that I have met at the two blogging conferences I have spoken at are some of the most amazing, dedicated, inspiring people that I have ever met!

Well, this whole road of Social Media is a fun one AND I'm glad you are sharing this adventure with me! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Wisk...Laundry Detergent

OK~ I have always tended to use the laundry detergent that comes in the orange container...but I must share this with you! I had a coupon for Wisk laundry detergent and thought I'd give it a try. I realized I had the true test for this laundry detergent when my 16 year old son came home from a few hours of walking beans.

So, I tossed these into the washing machine with a few other very dirty clothes and this is what came out!

It's almost unbelievable! It was almost a full 24 hours later that they landed in the washing machine. I can recall when my boys were younger that it was always a struggle to get grass stains out of clothing~ so this, was a major, major surprise! It's been a while since I've had to tackle the grass stained clothing~ this is a success story I had to share!

This Mom likes her Wisk laundry detergent and is thankful she had a $2.00 off coupon to push her towards the purchase! Gotta love boys and their grime~ After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

All Of These Critters

OK~ We had a very wet summer early on, and now it has turned very dry here in Northern Iowa. Our lawn is pretty much toast, and due to the rains early on, our garden has been very fruitful. And I'm also observing the fruitfulness of the critters that roam. From the skunks, to the raccoons, and field mice~ it looks to have been a very fruitful season for them as well. There's something about those smelly skunks that just drives this Mom nuts! Could it be that our two dogs, along with a 16 year old son, are just drawn in by the scent of one of those black/white critters?

And the deer population has also exploded. It's not uncommon to sight more than four dear in one mile, on the way to our home. So, once those corn fields begin leaving the landscape, we will have those crazy four legged creatures galavanting all over the place. It looks to have been a fruitful season in Iowa when it comes to these lovely critters....One has to love the great Iowa out-doors and all that goes with it! Accepting Kids For Who They Are

OK~ This Mom is really struggling with how our schools do not accept kids for who they are and what their abilities are. I am so ready for the next two years to be over with,.....My family and I have worked very hard, alongside the support of our school district, to get our son to the level of success that he achieved last school year.

With a new school year approaching, I am concerned that many kids won't be able to experience the things they enjoy about school. From Foreign Languages, to the Industrial Technology Classes- these opportunities can make the difference if a teen stays in school or not. Not many are going to enjoy writing, reading, and math throughout the WHOLE school day!

So, this Mom is asking all of these legislative people, "Is it more effective to have teachers struggling to engage kids in classes they do not enjoy or is it more effective for the kids to be working in a class they have an interest in?" Now, I am not a teacher, but I can tell you that once a child is 16 1/2 years old, you are probably not going to change how their brains work and how they learn. Some of us are auditory learners and others are visual learners.

I don't blame the teachers, I blame our policies. Sure, I want kids to know how to read. But, I don't expect all kids to read at the same level OR be an "A" student in every class. This Mom has worked hard to get her son where he is today. It has been through the support of his teachers and staying on top of things as a parent.

Teaching is about building relationships and motivating kids~ I pray for my son's teachers this school year, as they will need the prayers to keep our son interested in getting up for school each day.  Look back at your Junior year in high school~ Did you have more elective classes or more chosen classes for you?  I wonder how many parents are clueless that this is happening to their kids...Parents, speak with your child's Principal, demand that your children get what they deserve! This Mom is not giving up, but she knows there are laws to follow....and she does not LIKE them!

We, as a nation, must move beyond this statement that all children must function at such and such a level~ It's time to move on and put our kids first! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Seasons Change

OK~ Here we are in August in Iowa. The corn is tall and starting to lose some of that rich, beautiful green color. Our gardens are booming with tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, and about everything else you can imagine. The Iowa State Fair is happening, as well as those school bells. I was driving down a street in town today, and it was so bare. I wondered, "Where is everyone?" Well, I thought about that...People are probably taking in the last few days of summer vacation at the beach, shopping for school supplies, or maybe out of town on vacation. In a couple weeks this stretch of road will be actually crazy with traffic!

The calendar says summer, but our families are switching to the Fall season. This Mom is going to call it summer for another month, just like the calendar says! Those crazy sweaters are NOT coming out for quite sometime, as they were packed away the middle of June. The locusts, or whatever they are called, are buzzing like crazy, which tells me the cooler weather will come, if I like it or not!  For now, my feet are loving open toed shoes and this body loves the warmer weather!

So....for now, my 16 year old continues to enjoy sleeping in and being a typical teen, as that yellow bus will be arriving in the wee hours of the morning in a relatively short amount of time. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Woahhh...Watermelon in the Garden!

OK~ I'm stunned that we have managed to actually grow several watermelon this year. Now, I really, really need to know the secret of when to pick these! I'm fairly good when it comes to growing and eating Iowa Sweetcorn, not sure about this Iowa watermelon thing. I'm reading on line.....Knock on it~ Ok, I'm knocking and they sound kind of hollow. And then I'm seeing roll it over and if it's yellow, it's ready. Oh yeah, but how does one roll it over without breaking the stems~ which is a no-no.....Any advice, any of you have~ This Mom will take it. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

What? No Recess....

OK~ You have got to be kidding this Mom. I am reading national news stories, and various tweets about the small amount of recess time that many kiddos will be getting during this school year. 15 Min., once a day for a 6 year old. Are you serious? As a Mom to two boys, I can tell you that this Mom would have been on the speed dial of the Elementary Principal if a policy like this had been in place when my boys were 6 years old! What happened to kids being allowed to "play?"

Have we, as a society, become so over protective that we don't even want our kids to swing, play on the monkey bars, or play a little hop-scotch? Well, this Mom thinks hop-scotch still should exist, if it does or doesn't! Or, is it that we "think" that by keeping our kids' eyeballs pressed to the books the whole school day, our kids will perform better? I'm perplexed...thankful that my youngest will be a Junior in High School, and I am seeing daylight at the end of the tunnel.

This Mom believes that we, as parents, need to fight for our kids....Demand that our schools let our kids be kids! I'm encouraging you to get involved in your school. Become a PTO/PTA member, or at least attend A meeting! Parents, your voice counts....This recess thing just bothers me- If you are a parent to a youngster, I'd be checking into this.....If this is going on at your school~ be an advocate for your child~ When you were 6, would you like not having recess, or 15 min. (if you are lucky) once a day?

My rant for the day.....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tim Bradley~ World Class Exhibition Shooter

OK~ We had a fun time watching Tim Bradley at the Ventura Gun Club, in Ventura, Iowa. I have never attended anything like this. The closest thing that I have attended is a high school trapshooting event. Now, I've always wondered what it is about boys wanting to shoot food and the like! Yep, this guy shoots it all.....Once I saw that even the pros are really into shooting cauliflower, eggs, and the occasional clay target - I now realize that my boys are normal!

If you look closely, you can see his target~ EGGS!  And he smashed 'em!

This man is truly living his dream~ Tim Bradley is a champion shooter that joined Team Benelli and does a nice job promoting their products while having fun! If Tim is going to be in your neighborhood soon~ do take the time to check out his show. And the finale......I won't ruin it for ya~ But it was awesome!

And that's a wrap folks!

He offered fine conversation, signed hats, and whatever attendees had for him to sign! A fun day was had by all.....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Important Things That I Learned Today....

OK~ I really had a busy, busy day today!  I learned three really, really important things today-

  1. My 16 year old is really growing up. While flipping through the television channels this evening, he actually stopped and watched a Presidential Debate. He made this comment, "Mom, Do all Presidents lie so they can get elected?"  Well, I responded, 'What do you think?"  He says, "Yep!"
  2. While driving down the highway with my 16 year old in the passenger seat, I have accepted the fact that Green Day is music---and just that!
  3. Fast Food Drive Thrus are seriously over rated.  Yep, this Mom and her son timed the order from our car- a whopping 16 minutes for a chicken sandwich. Garrett and I decided they must have had to pluck the chicken before they got my order ready!
I am thankful that Garrett and I do have these interesting conversations in the car. Who knew? There is value in car time with your kids- make use of it! Your kids are listening to your every word, every note you sing off key, and they are watching where you hold your hands on the steering wheel! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

School Picture Time

OK~ This will be the last year that school picture day will be a concern at our home. So, Garrett and I had this discussion today.

ME:  "Well, what are you going to where for your school picture?"

GARRETT:  Shrugs his shoulders, "I don't know and I do not care!"

Wow....I'm thinking, life is Good! My 16 year old son is happy with his current wardrobe~ Now to cut his hair and pray for a smile! I think it's been about six years since we've gotten a school picture with a smile. I wonder why I have purchased them through the years...But, they are a keepsake of the times! Do you purchase school pictures or have them taken at a later date? Next year it will be time to schedule a Senior Picture appointment..Hard to Believe....Just maybe, just maybe, he will smile! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The School Bells Will Be Ringing Soon

OK~ We've got an unusual late start to our school year. Garrett's first day as a Junior in high school will be September 1st. Yep, hard to believe, but due to construction, our school district is starting a few days later this school year. I cannot recall the last time our boys started school before August 25th, etc....Time sure goes fast!

I think back to that first day of Kindergarten for my soon to be 11th Grader- this Mom was happy! But the years have flown by so quickly...The cool thing about all of this- my boys are getting older, but this Mom is not! So for now, we are still enjoying summer, as we know the school bells will be ringing soon. But you know what? That big yellow bus will be coming down the road rather soon! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Sights of Summer

OK~ Now that I'm home and have left the wonderful view of Lake Kabetogama....I did manage to spy a couple very nice looking things around my yard today. Iowa is very green and lush in the summertime- The crops are looking mighty fine around Northern Iowa! And it appears that the plants and flowers have also enjoyed the beautiful hot weather we have been blessed with through the month of July into August.

I love the color~ The colors are vibrant! And yes, Garrett mumbled,  "Mom, you and your flowers!" And of course, the eye roll! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Yes....These Still Exist

OK~ We all know that the great outdoors has much to offer. However, I was pleased to find one of these along the Locator Lake Trail in Voyageurs National park....

On the other hand...I did not have to use this facility. I opened the door to take a peak...There was toilet paper and it was clean! Well, as clean as one of these can possibly be! This Mom kept on hiking and felt blessed that she did not have to use this facility! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Packing To Head Up North

OK~ It's been a glorious week here up North......Living in North Iowa, I am in tune to the world of our ever changing weather. If you seriously want to know what tomorrow's weather will look like- look out the window in the morning, as the forecast will likely have changed over night. In packing for our little fishing trip up North....I had my carry-on-suitcase to fill for one week~ I did it!

I packed my bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, jeans, sweatshirt AND mittens! Seems like the extreme, doesn't it? But, hey, you never know! Quite often when you travel to get away from the sweltering heat of summer, the heat follows you, instead of leaving you. In this case......this is what happened. Seriously, it has been hotter up here- 500 miles NORTH of home, than it has been at home the past couple of days....

At least I was prepared.....My mittens rode along for the ride and are still in tow, just in case! Looks like all of those years packing for those Cub/Boy Scout outings has paid off....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Sounds of A Minnesota Summer

OK~ I'm enjoying the sights and sounds of a Minnesota Summer. Gotta love the sound these loons make. Although, I am surprised that there are not any more birds here. There are sea gulls, pelicans, loons, and a red winged black bird. The swooping sound that the birds make is a sound distinctly theirs. And who doesn't love the excitement when a fish is successfully reeled and brought on board? I have caught A fish.....I am happy! I'm sitting here on the deck, as the waves splash against the docks and another fishing boat heads out. Looks to be another hot, sunny day here at Lake Kabetogama........Come on fish, we are counting on you for supper tonight! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Traveling to a Resort, Up North~ Have Real Expectations....

OK~ Having spent sometime in Northern Minnesota this week, I've heard some interesting remarks..."Where's the central air conditioning?"  "You mean to tell me, there's no McDonald's nearby?" "What, Are you serious? The grocery store is 10 miles?" Seriously, when you decide to make a reservation at a resort in the lake or mountainous areas of the United States, read the fine print. If you do this, you will not be disappointed. If you are truly looking for all of the luxuries that you have at home and more......I would suggest booking a room at a Hotel that offers those amenities! Our family is enjoying the great out doors, the lake is beautiful, summertime at its best AND even the owners of the resort will admit- these temps are extreme for Northern Minnesota ! It is hot and humid, but roll with it....enjoy the pelicans, the cool lake water, a fish fry~ kick back and take it all in,

Summer time is short...so this Mom is enjoying every moment! It's fun to see that smile on Garrett's face as he carries the fish to the cleaning station.....The fish we have caught have been too small for Dad or Grandpa to carry up.....There's something about it that it  has to be "THAT BIG FISH!"  Well, let me tell ya..We've had some tasty fish and I'm impressed with the fish that have been caught, including the ONE I caught! If it looks cleanable, Garrett will gladly carry it to the fish cleaning station....

Fishing With The Boys.....

OK~ Here we are...Fishing in Northern Minnesota...My view as I write this blog post! The boys are out fishing and going to bring us lunch~ We shall see! Oh yeah, I ventured out yesterday...Here's a little recap of the adventure....

We only hooked ONE dock!
We did not hook any trees!
We hooked our fair share of rocks!
And somehow, I managed to let my reel out while the boat was flying out on the lake. It was not until hubby realized there was a flying minnow in his face, that he realized my pole had malfunctioned. After All, I would have never released the reel while the boat was cruising, right?
And to catch a fish...Two were caught yesterday. Garrett was more than proud to carry his catch of the day, a Northerner to the fish cleaning station,....Now, the older two guys of the crew....they, for some reason won't carry a fish to the fish cleaning station unless it is big enough! I'm still waiting to see this big enough fish.

So, for now, our 16 year old is more than happy to carry any legal fish that is caught to the fish cleaning station and mighty proud! Must be a guy thing...I don't get it!  Oh yeah...and this thing called trolling...I've decided that trolling is something that fisherman like to do so they can return from their fishing trips and talk about trolling and fishing....This Mom just doesn't get that part of fishing....Maybe after a few more days of hanging by this beautiful lake, I will come to realize the importance of trolling and fishing!

For now, I will sit back and listen to Todd tell Garrett, "Catch those fish....We need supper!"  Thank God we are not living off of the land or lake right now...we'd be starving!
After All, It''s All In a Mom's Day, Right?
