The Day My Son's Car Blew Up

OK~ It is always an adventure with a teen driver in the house. The past 48 hours have been a challenge here. From here on out, things can only go up. They have went about as low as they can go the past couple days.

You know, this all started with all the chaos we had with that family of skunks. The craziness continued when Garrett and his "rider" headed over to the gun club. They were not more than three miles from home when, "Bam!" Yep, this Mom got the call. "Mom, My car blew up!"  I'm thinking to myself, "Great!" As I approach the stalled car I can see a large stream of oil on the road, not good.

I rescued two 17 year old boys alongside the road, got them back home to vehicle #2 and they were on their way to work at the gun club. The next part of this lovely day was to awake Todd to let him know we had to go get Garrett's car off of the shoulder of the county road. His sleep is precious and I dreaded tapping him on the shoulder. But, I knew I had to do it.

He woke up, got dressed and we were ready to head out. I knew the car was going to have to be towed home. So, off we went. We had a truck, hitch and chain, all ready to roll. Todd hooked the car up and said, "What one are you driving?" I said, "Car!" Big mistake- this Mom pumped and pumped those brakes and even used the emergency brake and she could not make them work!

Getting the chain hooked up

Todd got in the truck and I got in the car, off we went. I did ok keeping the car behind the truck until he started to slow the truck down and I could not slow the car down. I then found myself venturing into the other lane, as it seemed like the better alternative here. Yes, the lane with oncoming traffic (thank God there was none)! The other alternative was slamming into the rear end of the truck. I think I made the best choice, don't you? At one point the chain was going across the road and the front passenger door of the car was next to the passenger car of the truck. At that moment I knew I had been fired and had blew my chances of ever being hired by a tow truck company.

My view while in the car being towed

After managing to get both vehicles safely to the side of the road we switched views. Todd told me, "Don't go over 25 mph!" I immediately said, "That's too fast. I could not slow down." We were now homeward bound. Only three more turns and one stop sign, life was looking good. Well, the stop sign scenario was not good. While taking off there was a large "clunk!" Thankfully we were still attached with a heavy chain and we had a hammer nearby when we arrived home.

My view after we switched places- I like this view better!

Things were looking much better as I pulled in the driveway and was able to park the truck without any vehicle alongside of me. For some reason, the car stayed behind the truck while he was driving. Seriously, what's up with that? I did not stick around long as I heard Todd say, "Gotta get a hammer to get that chain off!" Well, remember that loud clunk? Turns out that really tightened up that chain.

See- 15 mph is good!

Thanks to my son's car blowing up I now know where the emergency brake is located in a 1993 Ford Taurus, (although I question if it works), I do not risk being hired by a tow truck company and I know that 10-15 mph is the perfect speed limit to travel when towing a vehicle. Oh yeah, and one more thing. The plus side to living in Iowa-there isn't much traffic. Geeshe....I think I need a drink now! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Skunks And Spring Time- This Mom Wants The Skunks To Waltz Right On By

OK~ Living in the Iowa countryside can be crazy at times. Spring times brings critters that this Mom would love to see waltz right on by her yard. Seriously, why would a family of skunks want to waltz through our grove? You know, we have cats and dogs that really do not enjoy a confrontation with a skunk.

It should be no surprise that I was in the house at my computer with the windows open and that lovely horrible odor that skunks emit began to flow through our home. I quickly closed the windows. I stepped outside to find one dog, Skipper. Garrett was no where to be found, as well as the other dog, Wally. Within two minutes I had found one "smelly" seventeen year old son and two smelly dogs. Momma skunk and siblings had moved on their way. One skunk met it's demise with a dog and a kid!

Now, if you have never seen a skunk in action, let me tell you- they can be very vicious! Dogs are OK, Kid is clean and this Mom is bracing herself for round number two. With a Momma skunk and siblings nearby, it's not gonna be a rosy smelling summer.

Amazingly, Wally accepted his date with the garden hose and dish soap rather well!

Skunks, raccoons, wood chucks, and opossums seem to like what we have to offer here. I guess it's due to the solitude that we enjoy, a critter has to throw in a little chaos now and then. For now, I'm enjoying the breeze that we have in Iowa, as it's sure to air two dogs and a kid out today! On the bright side, the school nurse has not called me to tell me that my son is omitting an odor at school. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

New Life Is Around Every Corner

OK~ It's a holiday week-end and everywhere I turn there is new life. Several friends that I have met through social media have celebrated the birth of a new baby this past week, as well as a birthday or two in the house. Blessings are abundant, sometimes they are right in front of us and other times we have to search a little. Overnight this appeared!

 A rose

The soybean fields in Iowa continue to look a little more green each day.

Iowa Soybean Field

I am truly amazed that so many of these have came to life this Spring.

Peony In My Yard

And then this wonderful surprise! Pirate, the Mother Cat, had four little kittens yesterday. She found a box in the barn and continues to be near them.

Pirate, The Mother Cat and Four Kittens

The little blessings we have in life are truly beautiful. From flowers, to plants, to cats- new life is surrounding this Iowa Mom. It will be interesting to see how things have changed and grown in a months time. I'll have to update you once the July 1st rolls around, to let you know how all of these new creatures have grown.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Simpler Times And Medicine No Longer Exist

OK~ I guess my age is showing when I write this, as I know some of you may not remember these simple times. Today I had an appointment at my Dr.'s office for a standard blood draw. The wait was relatively short, but you know what really gets me? It's the fact that I have been a regular patient at this office for 18+ years and the people that work at the front desk seem to not know who I am. Each visit we go through the same routine. Your name? Your Birthdate? Your insurance card? Your driver's license?

Yes, I do get that this is the year 2012 and not the year 1998. Have we lost all personal contact when it comes to our health and our medical care? Thankfully my Dr. knows who I am and treats me like a person and not a number. I do realize the person at the front desk is doing their job, but seriously? If you want to talk about mental health, I can understand why some people need help with their mental help after visiting the Dr.'s office. Many people enjoy being greeted by their name (I know I do), and need to know that someone cares about them.

I long for the simple times of going to the local Dr. office and being greeted with a smile and being greeted by my first name. I can recall many times as a child walking into Dr. Adams' office with my Mom, being greeted with a smile (no matter how miserable I felt) and feeling welcomed. Gone, those days are gone, folks! Just another sweet thing of our past. Time continues to march on. This Mom really works hard to get to know people, find out a little bit about them, and be a friend. I wish our medical field could be a little more welcoming when it comes to that first impression, as it could use some work.

I wish we could go back to simpler times. But, in all honesty due to the words identity theft and the insecure world we live in, these new complicated times are here to stay. I wish my boys, 21 and 17 years old, knew these simpler times, but they never will. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Mom Is Requesting A New Start To The Day

OK~ How often do you want to crawl back into bed and crawl back out? Well, that's been my day today. I seriously wish I could go back and start the day all over. With only three issues today- they sure made my day crazy.

  • Bugs! My 21 year old son cannot stand bugs. He is deathly afraid of them and he has now resorted to roaming around the house 2/47 with a flashlight in tow. I guess I won't worry too much, until he finds the head flashlight deal that we have somewhere in the house for camping. When I see him sporting that in the middle of the night, I know we have entered a whole new zone with these so called bugs. I see bugs occasionally, but not to the extent that he does. This whole bug thing is new to me. Although, he has never liked bugs, but it seems to be getting worse. Uggghhh!
  • Pertussis! Yep, we have good old fashioned whooping cough circulating in our area. The goal in this house is to keep everyone healthy. s
  • Nose bleeds! I am hoping for one day, yep, you read that correct, just one day where we don't have one nose bleed in this house. The last week has been bad. Must be the dryness of the air.
So for now, I will focus on a few more days of Garrett's Junior Year in High School and begin to focus on summer. Time marches on and on and on and on.........We will battle the bugs together, avoid pertussis, and kiss the nose bleeds good-bye! Although I do believe my washing machine has been enjoying the extra work-out. Good old Wisk is getting the blood stains out pretty darn well! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe - Oceanfront Resort

OK~ Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe is Orlando's closest oceanfront resort. Once you and your family set foot on this property, you will feel as though the red carpet has been rolled out. From our first steps in the clean, welcoming entryway of the property; we felt as though we were home. We immediately embraced the palm trees and ocean views that this Iowa family does not experience on a daily basis. The Iowa to Florida Road Trip took a sunny turn when we walked the red carpet while staying at Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe.

Entryway At Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe

The staff at the front desk was extremely helpful and accommodating. Upon checking in, another guest approached another receptionist with a challenging question. I can honestly say that the staff member handled the situation in a very professional, respectful manner. As we all know, first impressions are very important- this Mom was impressed!

Keep in mind when booking your stay at this beautiful oceanfront property, you will want to note that there are two buildings. The "main" building is home to the indoor play area, movie theater, and outdoor water park. The "beachfront" building is home to the Atlantic Ocean and beach area. Should you choose to stay in the "main" building, the walk to the beach is maybe a whopping 10 minutes, or you can hop on the tram that runs every 10-15 minutes. We chose to hop on the tram, which was quick and convenient. The tram runs between both buildings for most of the day, with the hours varying by season.

The View Of The Water Park Area From Our Room At Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe (Main Building)

For families with younger children, I would recommend the main building. If you are traveling with older kids, I honestly don't think it matters one way or the other. There is so much to do on this property, as kids of all ages, will never, ever say they are bored.  The children's play area, as well as an art area is located in the main building.
One of the Kid Friendly Areas In The Main Building At Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe

Should Mother Nature choose to rain on your stay, don't worry, there are always activities going on. Your family friendly resort room will have all of the amenities you would expect in a 21st Century resort room.
If vacation ownership is something that you have been considering, do take a tour while staying here. Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe, will not disappoint you. Once you experience all of the amenities that are offered here, you may find yourself owning a vacation here!

While your feet are planted on the grounds of Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe, you will have no need to leave the property during your stay. Stock up on your groceries before your arrival and be ready to experience all of the amazing amenities that are offered here. Oh yeah, and if you are cruising out of Port Canaveral, take advantage of free parking while cruising. Stay at Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe, before and after your cruise, to take advantage of this fabulous service!

Our family loved our stay at Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe. It truly has something for everyone. If you want to soak up some sun on the pool deck, it's available. Should you opt to soak up some sun on the sandy beach, it's also available.

Spring 2012 Gets Better All The Time

OK~ Spring has been a little all over the place in regards to Mother Nature. Today it is beautiful!  I was delighted to see one of these had opened!

These were transplanted over the week-end and took a beating from the wind. They look fabulous! I love the color they offer.

Now the challenge is to keep these two from digging these up! Gotta love Spring time in Iowa.  Spring 2012 simply gets better all the time.

There Might Be Hope For This Mom And Her Kitchen Table

OK~ I cleared my kitchen table off. I removed all the papers, notebooks, and clutter that had landed its way onto it. Within four hours, I had two dozen golf balls and a shotgun shell reloader on top of it. Yep, this is what it looks like. Beautiful, huh? Tis the season for lots of outdoor activity in Iowa.

I am pleased to announce that the golf balls are marching their way into a golf bag and the shotgun shell reloader has a new home in the basement. With a house full of guys that love the outdoors, I guess I should not expect anything different from this. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Shoplet.Com: Swingline EX10-05 Light-Duty Cross-Cut Shredder Review

OK~ I have tried a couple paper shredders through the years and have had not had any luck with them. When offered me the opportunity to review the Swingline EX10-05 Light-Duty Cross-Cut Shredder, I jumped on the opportunity.

Swingline EX10-05 Light-Duty Cross-Cut Shredder
I will say I was pleasantly surprised on how well it functioned. When sliding papers and CDs in, there were no issues. Shopping for paper shredders can be overwhelming, as the first thing a person wonders is how many sheets of paper will shred through at once. This one lived up to my expectations, as I had no problem shredding several sheets of paper at a time.

Document shredders are often super noisy, which was not the case with this particular one. I was rather surprised at how quiet the Swingline EX10-05 Light-Duty Cross-Cut Shredder ran. I expected the shredder to be louder than it was. I have to say that I did appreciate the quietness, but I also appreciated the fact that this was a cross shredder.  Identity theft seems to be running rampant, and this is a fabulous solution. Look at how fine this paper is shredded.

Cross Shredded Paper-The View Through The Window On The Machine
This paper shredder also shreds credit cards, CDs, and staples. I have shredded numerous items over the past few days and I can honestly state that I have not had one paper jam; which was a welcome change. Any paper shredders that I have owned in the past have had issues with the paper not flowing through. I also loved the fact that there is a little window that allows users to see when the bin is full.

The buttons are easy to use and I found the instructions helpful. The shredder itself was easy to set up and the design is fabulous. It looks sleek, not like a trash can. Often times shredders are machines that people like to hide, as they look ancient. This shredder is one that you won't feel like you have to hide. When you have a machine like this in your office, your office supplies will all look up to date. It looks like a lot of the unwanted mail that continues to arrive for our 21 year old son, now has a new home. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I was sent a Swingline EX10-05 Light -Duty Cross-Cut Shredder for review purposes. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Low Tires And Bats Make This Mom's Life Interesting

OK~ Here's a glimpse into my life the past 24 hours. My seventeen year old son informs me that his car has a low tire and a head light is burned out. And to make things even more interesting, my 21 year old son knocks on my bedroom door at 1:18 a.m. and says, "Mom, there's a bat in the entryway." My response, "So?" Yep, I was tired. I then awoke again at 3:00 a.m. and it sunk in that he had told me there was a bat in the entryway. I got out of bed to be sure the door to the main part of the house was closed and thankfully it was. So for the time being, we may or may not have a bat somewhere in the house. Quite honestly, I hope that lovely creature has moved out and is enjoying every mosquito he comes in contact with. I'm praying for a peaceful, enjoyable day today without any encounter with a bat. Garrett's car has a new headlight and the tire has air, so all should be well with his car. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Kids of all ages will love Universal Resort Orlando. I am sharing three marvelous attractions to motivate you to book your family vacation at Universal Resort Orlando, Florida today! With two fabulous theme parks: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, you and your family will have the time of your life.

Reason #1

The perfect way to view Seuss Landing

Located in Islands of Adventure, The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride offers a bird's eye view of Seuss Landing on two separate tracks. Fun for kids of all ages-  Keep in mind that kids 34-48" tall must be accompanied by a supervising companion.

Reason #2

Corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, located in Islands of Adventure is home to Harry Potter's World. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is truly an adventure all of its own. The attraction itself is designed for guests over 48" tall. The cool part of this adventure is that the castle itself is home to some amazing architecture, and anyone of any size or age can check it out. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a high speed attraction, the signs that are posted are meant to be taken seriously. I would not recommend this attraction for kids that are afraid of the dark. For kids and adults that love a high speed adventure, this attraction is for you! Plan to spend a lot of time in this area of the park, as it is crowded, but well worth your time.

Reason #3

Join Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie
The Simpsons Ride located in Universal Studios is one of our favorite attractions. Guests must be at least 40" tall. Kids that are between 40"-48" tall must be accompanied by a supervising companion. Once you slide into your seat you will want to hold on. You will embark on an over-the top ride; as you will feel as though you are flying, floating, and crashing through Krustyland's kiddie attractions.

Time To Plant The Garden

OK~ We finally had a nice day to plant our garden last week.  We planted some of this and some of that. Our garden is a family affair. Grandpa, Dad, and Grandson were all actively planting seeds.

And we have several rows that look like this.

It will be interesting to watch these tomato and pepper plants grow. Last year we had an abundant amount of tomatoes and peppers.

And then we had this assistant nearby.

For now we wait. Spring has taken a turn for sunshine and mild temps here in Iowa. Our apple trees got hit with a fairly hard freeze in April, so I'm not sure what we will get off of them in a few months. From radishes, to carrots, to onions; our Iowa garden will hopefully be full of color and in a few weeks. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

17 Years Brings Changes

OK~ Today our youngest son is 17. Mother's Day 2012 was a little overshadowed with a birthday in the house. Now, I sometimes wish we could go back to the days that involved this.

One of Garrett's favorite toys of his childhood
Life was crazy, yet simple. Garrett was very stubborn and strong willed. Poor Mickey Mouse was drug through a lot of sand, dirt, and anything a little boy could find.

Move forward 17 years- and yep, this is what life looks like today!

The life of a teen age boys- green paintballs!

Yep, that's a bag of green paint balls!  Those crazy days of carrots and sweet potatoes seemed much simpler!  A Happy Birthday to Garrett! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Community And Social Media

OK~ I love social media and all that it has to offer. I also love the fact that through social media I have learned to embrace the word community and really learn what it's all about. It was through social media that I met Deb Brown. Deb and I reside a few miles from each other in North Central Iowa, and our paths had never crossed. Our paths crossed a couple years ago on Twitter and the rest is history.

Deb Brown Inspiring Others At The State Of Now Conference
Deb is a firm believer that it takes a community to make things happen. It is not only through what she believes, but what she does to implement the happenings in her neighborhood. I have experienced her local town and what it has to offer. I know that through her hard work and the support of others, her local community is thriving. As with any community, there are challenges. Yet, it's always nice to know there is someone rooting for the positive happenings to take place.

Deb opened the doorway for me when she allowed me to speak at the 140 Character Conference in Des Moines. Through that opportunity, I was able to land a couple other speaking engagements in regards to social media. And the word community popped up again when I was invited to be a part of a Bloggers Tour that she organized in Hampton, Iowa. Thank You, Deb!

Bloggers Tour Franklin County- Fall 2011

So, this brings me back to the word community. I am a firm believer that we all need to support each other. That includes teachers, students, athletes, coaches, business owners, farmers, and even politicians. It saddens me when I hear of others not wanting to support others. I just wish for one day, we could all accept each other and be happy for each other. It seems as though the almighty dollar tends to take over and we forget that we are a community and we all need each other.

Deb is a connector and has a passion for her community. I am so thankful that I met Deb through social media and she has inspired me to do good for others. The online community is a wonderful place to meet some very inspiring, awesome people! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My 115th Wordless Wednesday Post

Beyond Coastal Product Review And Giveaway

OK~ I am always looking for sunscreen that our whole family will use. I must say that Beyond Coastal surprised me with a nice, little package full of wonderful products. I was exceptionally pleased to learn that Beyond Coastal Sun Care products do not contain inactive ingredients, The so called inactive ingredients in this fabulous line are Shea Butter, Rose Hip Oil, Coconut Oil, and many other nourishing nutrients that your family will enjoy.

We are a family that loves to spend the afternoon out in a boat, fishing on a lake. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we have sunscreen along that is convenient to use. Now check this out! This is simply one of the most user friendly sunscreen applicators I have ever used. This is simply a stick that you rub on your face. How easy is that?

Beyond Coastal Active FaceStick Sunscreen SPF 30

The Beyond Coastal Sun Care products that I had the opportunity to experience were not greasy, as they all went on smooth. And the other cool thing, they had a pleasant citrus scent. When I apply sunscreen I often wonder what scent the company has tried to produce. Well, with this particular line, there is no guessing; and it is an extremely pleasant scent.

This is a product that will easily fit in the glove compartment of your teenage son/daughter's car. Teens are open to products that they don't have to mess with and that "look" nice. Wouldn't you agree that Beyond Coast Sun Care offers both? I know I do!

Head on over to Beyond Coastal Sun Care to find out where you can purchase these fabulous products to meet the needs of your family this summer!

The Dilemma Of The Ice Cube Tray

OK~ This is what I continually find in my freezer!
Ice Cube Trays Are Over Rated
Yep, that would be an empty ice cube tray. Would someone please tell me what is so difficult about filling up the tray after it is emptied? I'm assuming that my 21 and almost 17 year old sons do not know how to run the water. Maybe I need to invest in more ice cube trays. But then again, I have no room in the freezer for more ice cube trays. This summer will be interesting, as we go through more ice. Do you have this problem at your house? The Word Time

OK~ I am sitting here thinking about the word time and several things have crossed my mind. Am I seriously the Mom of a 21 and soon to be 17 year old? It seems that the older people in my life do always "get" life. I recall the day that I held my oldest son in my arms and my room mate had just given birth to her third child. She told me to enjoy him while he was so little.  Now, since I was a first time Mom, I thought to myself, "What does she know?" It turns out she knew way more than I gave her credit for at the ripe old age of 24!

And time marches on. Time is perpetual, as there is no turning back. Our four seasons tend to come and go. The grass turns green and then the snow flies. In Iowa we are in tune with time on a daily basis. Our farmers are watching the calendar very close, as we have had a week of wet, muddy weather. There are still many acres of crops that need to be planted.

Time is everywhere. Our kids have set schedules, as their teachers expects them to be in the classroom by a certain time. Many high school graduation parties are being planned. Most Moms that are planning graduation celebrations will tell you that time is not on their side. Those 17-18 years just seemed to go "poof!"

For now I will watch the clock move forward, enjoy life, and know that it is important to embrace the blessings in each day. Are you making the most out of every hour in your life? I know I have some work to do, as time does not seem to be on my side. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A Sign Of Spring

OK~ Look what we found this morning. A momma cat and her three newborn kittens. She found a nice box located in the garage to burrow in. Now, to keep two dogs at bay. These three kittens have a nice stretch of warm, Iowa weather to soak in. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
