May Day Has Arrived

OK~  May Day has arrived and I'm thinking back to simpler times. The days of May Baskets. It is interesting to me that we have now entered an era of people that do not know what May Baskets are. I guess my age is showing, again. The simple days of a white styrofoam cup, pipe cleaners, and popcorn/candy seem so long ago; yet just a few days ago.

May 1st used to be a big day, now I'm talking 40 years ago. I can recall taking May Baskets on the school bus to give to my friends. It's been over time that May Baskets have given way to our busy lives. We are a much more mobile society with calendars filled 24/7. Technology, which I love; sometimes over takes the simple things in life. And I'm now thinking, there probably isn't a school bus driver that would like to see a May Basket or two coming on board his/her bus. Most schools today probably wouldn't allow kids to bring in a little May Basket with popcorn and simple candy. Somedays I really wonder what we have done to ourselves, as we seem to have let the simple things slip away.

My boys delivered May Baskets for a few years in the 1990's, but it was nothing like the fun of the 1970's and 1980's. The May Baskets were very simple and my boys seriously wondered what we were doing. They saw it as a crazy thing Mom was throwing together. Yep, they were simple- very, very simple.

I'm thinking we should go back to the simpler times and embrace the white styrofoam cups, colorful pipe cleaners, popcorn, and simple candy.....What about you? Will you be delivering May Baskets on this May Day 2012? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

  1. I don't think I've ever made or delivered a May Day basket. It could be fun though, I think!!
