The Season Of Holidays

OK~ October is seriously about over. Halloween is just a couple days away. Thanksgiving is not that far away either. And then in the snap of a finger or two, Christmas and New Years will be here. Wow- This year has flown by so fast, simply unreal.

The older I get (there's that age thing again), they years really do seem to go by faster and faster. I really just want to kick back and enjoy this crazy road of life. I want to enjoy each moment, live in the moment, and sometimes wish I could get stuck in time. You ever feel that way?

Today was a new adventure for our family. My Dad was released from the nursing home to home! Yes, I said home. After spending September in the hospital and October in a nursing home he was really ready to be home. Life takes turns that we seem to have no control over, but yet we find a way to take control of the situation.

We will embrace the remaining holidays of 2012, look forward to lots of exciting happenings in 2013- A high school graduation in this house in 2013! There we go again....Where did all those years go? And we will enjoy Valentine's Day, Easter and all of the holidays of 2013 where more family memories will be made. Embrace all of these holidays, as they only come around once every year. The Week That Never Ended

OK~ I have seriously had one of those weeks! I am sure many of you can relate. Life gets kind of crazy and quite frankly, lets just say that this was a really, really crazy one for me.

It all started last Saturday when our young adult son had car issues. Yep, gotta love the car issues. Within an hour of getting "the call," I was on the road to exchange cars. Not sure that I still grasp what exactly happened, but I guess everyone is now happy.

Then we proceed to Monday evening. Oh yeah, you gotta love a little slip on the floor. I have all the bumps and bruises to prove it. My big toe is officially, red, black and blue. If it didn't hurt like it does, I would have guessed I just bumped it. The beauty of this incident is the fact that I should have a brand new toenail on my big toe by next summer.

Tuesday was a crazy day as I was literally up with the chickens, 4:00 a.m. My Dad had a Dr.'s appointment at 7:00 a.m. in a town a couple hours away. So, by the time three of us that were taking him were in the car, picked Dad up, and on our way; we came to the conclusion that between the four of us we had a grand total of 16 hours of sleep. Every single one of us was afraid we would over sleep.

Wednesday did not get a whole lot better,. although I did become educated on how to use insulin pens and diabetic diets. I decided to get my hair cut, last minute. I literally pulled into the parking lot, parked right in front of the front door of the haircut place and guess what? My car sat there for the next five hours. The car would not start. So, I had to call for a ride. Crazy thing....five hours later, battery cables hooked up to it (literally, just hooked up) and the car started.

Oh yeah and then there's the crock pot. I came home Wednesday evening to a broken crock pot. Wally had decided to knock it off the counter,  So, yesterday I decided to cook with my "old" crock pot. You guessed it! I seriously burned supper in that "old" crock pot. I honestly did not know that is possible, but I do know that it is.

So.......here's to a great week-end and a next week that is filled with awesome adventures. I'm enjoying the chaos, as this is what life is all about. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Way Better Snacks Review And Giveaway

Way Better Snacks

OK~ I was very curious when I was given the opportunity to try a new snack food. Let me tell you this, Way Better Snacks  rock! Have you heard of these tortilla chips? These chips were awesome. In fact, these were so tasty and flavorful that they were devoured in this house in a couple of days. Yes, all six bags! Black Bean, Sweet Potato, Sweet Chili, Multi-Grain, No-Salted Naked Blue, and Unbeatable Blues were the six bursting flavors.

Now I must say I was a little skeptical thinking as these were gluten free snacks and probably would not taste good!  I was wrong- these are simply way better than any other snack chips you will find on the shelves in your local grocery store. Sweet Chili quickly became my favorite.

Sweet Chili Way Better Snacks

You are probably now saying, "What makes these Way Better Snacks better than any other ordinary tortilla chip?" Yep, you have a legitimate question, as I asked the very same thing. These chips are made out of Daikon Radish Seeds, Stone Ground Corn, Sprouted Broccoli Seeds, and even Organic Sprouted Chia Seed. The cool part of these ingredients is the fact that these tortilla chips taste fabulous.
Way Better Snacks are Certified Gluten Free, Non-GMO Verified, and 100%Whole Grain.

Each bag of Way Better Snacks is the perfect accompaniment to garden fresh salsa. Garden fresh tomatoes, garden fresh onions, and cilantro heated together offer the perfect dish to accompany these tasty Way Better Snacks.
Homemade Garden Salsa

We ate them with fresh garden salsa, but the cool thing about these snacks; Way Better Snacks are so flavorful they do not need any special dips to go with them.

Way Better Snacks is offering one of you a bag of each flavor~ Go ahead and enter today! Trust me, you will be glad you did. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tis The Season Of Politics

OK~ The price we pay for having the right to vote in our country is having to listen to political ads 24/7. Have you tuned into You Tube lately? Lots of campaign videos happening before you can view what you logged into view.

The television ads are non - stop. What makes me disgusted is the amount of money that is spent on all of this advertising. If we could take just a small portion of funds spent; I am sure a homeless family in the United States could have food on their table for the next tear.

From this Mom's point of view- the advertisements will not change my vote. I get it, it is all about the almighty dollar and this Mom cannot change that. I just wish for one day, we could focus on being Americans and not focus on money. We live in a country of freedoms and choices that we all need to appreciate more, including me.

So, for now this Mom will keep doing what she is doing and hope that Americans will get out and vote once November rolls around. I am thinking back to my Iowa caucus experience, and I am reminded that my vote does count; at least I would like to think it does. If I do not vote, I know I do not have the right to complain. Appreciating The Words Happy Birthday

OK~ It's been a crazy time of year here. October is filled with birthdays in our family. It is also a time of year when I have to pinch myself and say, "Am I really __ years old?" Hearing the words Happy Birthday should be something we all look forward to each year.

Today I ate lunch with my parents at the care center my Dad is currently residing in. While glancing around I thought to myself, "Wow, all of these people really do appreciate their birthdays!" My Dad's birthday was on October 13th, and of course we had a very fun party for him at the care center. His party did not consist of a jump house, clowns, or prize bags for all in attendance. His party was one of celebration! We are all so lucky that we were able to celebrate his 73rd birthday with him and do hope we can celebrate many more with him.

While eating my lunch today I came to the realization and acceptance that I am no longer the young Mom. I am a Middle Aged Mom with older sons (17 & 21) and aging parents. Now, the words aging parents hit me like a ton of bricks in the summer of 2011. The end of Summer 2012 just reinforced the fact that I am a Mom of a teenager, young adult son, and daughter of aging parents. Somewhere along this journey, I feel that I skipped something; although I'm not sure what it is. I had this vision that my parents would always be "young" and be healthy throughout their early retirement years. 70 and 73 are not old from my point of view.

So~ reality sinks in. I am that Mom- I do have a high school senior that has needs, my young adult son has needs, and my aging parents have needs. Somewhere in the midst of all of this chaos I need to remember that I am a married Mom and need to take care of myself as well. As long as I can hear one person say, "Happy Birthday" to me on October 14, 2013, I will have taken care of myself over the course of the next year.

Life is special, make things happen, and go out and reach for your dreams. Life is all about birthdays and being able to share it with those that you love! For now, we wait for February 2nd to roll around, as that's when our oldest son turns 22 ( really, 22) ! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

All Of These Shoes

OK~ I've shared my struggles with shoes and socks for the past three years and guess what folks? I've still got that same old shoe mess. And those crazy socks, I now have a clothes basket, half full- yes, you read that correct- with mismatched socks- Ugggghh!

The beauty of this pile is the fact that I cannot find one pair here that is mine. There are water sandals, tennis shoes, dress sandals, hiking shoes, and a red bag in this mess. I have came to the conclusion that shoe organization is something that will never happen in this house. With boot season on the horizon, I cannot imagine what this pile will look like in the next couple months. Any guesses? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

What I Learned From Hosting A Google+ Hangout

OK~ Google+ continues to intrigue me and obviously many of you. I really do love the format of Google+ and look forward to learning more. Last night I hosted a Hangout on Google+,  just a fun time to learn what Google+ is, what is does and what it can be for all of us. Here are my three take aways from our Hangout last night.

  • Use Google (Yeah, should be a no brainer, right?) Chrome!
  • Host Hangouts While My 17 Year Old Is Not Gaming Online (Uggghhhh).
  • Lots Of Us Want To Learn More About Google+!

So- Next Tuesday, October 23, 2012,  at 8 PM (CST) we are all going to Hangout again on Google+. Those of us that attended enjoyed ourselves! Another thing that I learned is that if you RSVP to the event as a Yes I will attend, you will receive notice on your Google+ page that this Hangout is now happening. This should eliminate the questions of, "How do I join?"

I know I would love to have you join us next Tuesday for our next Hangout, so be sure we are connected on Google+ and I will be sure you get an invite. Then you need to say Yes you will be there and you should be able to easily hop into the Hangout!

I look forward to connecting with you throughout Social Media. Google+ is just another awesome avenue that we have in front of us to use, so make it count! If you have any tips in regards to the happenings on Google+, I am all ears!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Did You Have To Wear THAT Shirt?

OK~ We celebrated my Dad's 73rd Birthday this past Saturday with a nice, little party. I was not home to take charge of what my seventeen year old son would be wearing to the party. Yes, I still have to do that.

We have several shirts around our home that are strictly for fun! Garrett is an outdoorsman and loves to hunt and fish. For Christmas last year, Santa delivered this shirt.

And much to this Mom's dismay, this is what Garrett showed up in at Grandpa's Birthday Party!  Let's just say this Mom wanted to crawl into a hole.....I guess all of those years of dressing my boys in those cute, matching plaid outfits has came back to get me!

On a side note, Santa really, really needs to think twice before he delivers anything a little fun or out of the ordinary for Christmas 2012! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Blessings On My Birthday

OK~ Life has been extremely chaotic the past couple months and in the midst of all the chaos I continue to be blessed. My faithful hubby of 25+ years puts up with me and all of my "social" stuff and my boys keep me involved in their lives. Today I am reminded of how blessed I am!

Yesterday we celebrated my Dad's 73rd Birthday. A few weeks ago we all wondered if he would be here to celebrate. Dad is our Miracle Man! Due to his faith and the wonderful medical technology that the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota offers, he is alive today. Necrotizing pancreatitis is a life changing experience. Kind of scary to see how life can change in an instant all because of one gall stone.

My Birthday Buddy- My Dad!

And in September, I was so blessed to be able to connect with the awesome people at Bloggy Conference in Cincinnati! The people that I meet each day continue to bless me in ways I never, ever dreamed possible. I have met many of you through social media and I must add- you each bless me each day in your own way- I am so blessed!

Some Of The Awesome Attendees Of Bloggy Conference
In the midst of all of this craziness, my niece Hannah entered the world; happy and healthy!

The first part of September I was able to sneak away from the hospital, in Rochester, to hit the road with my hubby and youngest son to take in a New England Patriot's football game. Yep, my first NFL football game- in Nashville, Tennessee! This was our birthday present to Garrett, so I knew I had to make it happen, and I did. A fast, fun road trip.

Life is fun and I am thankful that each of you are a part of my life!  And then there is this beautiful lady who is a surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, her name is Dr. Mariela Rivera.
Beautiful People

This is the amazing surgeon who made it possible for my Dad to be here to celebrate his 73rd birthday and to be here with me on my 46th birthday!  Life is good folks- Enjoy each day. My birthday is filled with so many blessings this year and I look forward to sharing the next year with each of you. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It Is Time To Shop For A New Pillow

OK~ I am thinking that I read somewhere that you should change your bed pillow yearly. I thought to myself, really? It seriously takes me a year to find the perfect pillow. The pillow I had been sleeping on was no longer supporting this 40 something year old's neck. Hence, the mission to find a new pillow!

While strolling through several stores I found myself staring at pillow after pillow. Finally, one day, while meandering through Target;  I took the plunge and tossed this memory foam pillow into the cart.

My neck is adjusting and I do think this ventilated (nice word, right?) memory foam pillow will be a good fit for me. I honestly did not know that shopping for a pillow could be so stressful. There are round, square, thin, thick, soft, hard, and lumpy pillows lining all the shelves in all of these stores. And would someone enlighten me as to how a busy Mom is supposed to know that the pillow she tosses into her cart is going to be the one that relieves all of the stress of the day?

I will keep you posted and let you know how the pillow situation evolves at this house. I'm more stressed out thinking about how I like this crazy thing than I was with my old, neck straining pillow! I am chanting to myself each night, "I will sleep tonight. I will sleep tonight!" After two weeks, I am still waiting for that comfy night of sleep with this pillow. I know, I know, two weeks is not a fair trial period. I need to be patient and accept the fact that this pillow is the next best thing to a relaxing day at a spa. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I purchased this pillow. I did not receive any product or monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Repair Manuals For The Record

OK~ Seriously, one has to wonder what one would do with all of these repair manuals?

As history proves around this house. These manuals will not be opened in several years and then WHAM- It's time to break them out on a daily basis. It's always good to be prepared when it comes to farm machinery and all of these handy dandy machines that we have around the house. It's never a good thing when we decide to toss out that "one" manual, as that will definitely be the one that is needed in the near future! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Family Photos Create Memories That Last a Lifetime

OK~ I'm cruising through family pictures tonight. In just a few months, our youngest son will graduate from high school. I know how quick the month of May will arrive and I will be thinking, "Wow, where was that picture?" I stumbled across this photo tonight and it brought back so many great memories of all the hiking we have done with our boys in Rocky Mountain National Park.

I know that the date and the year are incorrect, but this is sure a fun memory! What fun memories do you have of your kids when they were younger? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Fall Color Is Abundant

OK~ Fall color here is abundant! I am taking it all in as I know all of this color will turn to "white" beauty very soon. I was rather surprised to find this in front of my house a couple days ago.

Fall Roses

A view of the Winnebago River in my hometown!

Winnebago River- Mason City, Iowa

And the color and the views just kept popping up all around me.

Fall Beauty 2012

The past couple days have been extremely windy, so the leaves are becoming more and more sparse. A beautiful 10 days here in North Iowa. Considering the heat and dry weather we have had this summer, I would say that we had stunning color this year! Do you have Fall color around you this season?

Living in Iowa we do have four seasons. We have wild differences in our temperatures, as well as our weather. And the wind, we have lots of wind here in Iowa. I guess that would explain why we have several wind farms across our landscape. I will embrace the change, as Mother Nature is who she is and I cannot change that! Wally Watching His Best Friend

OK~ Wally has watched Garrett leave for school each morning during the school year for the last nine years. I'm wondering how his morning routine will change once Garrett graduates, as he is a Senior this year. Garrett walks out another door in the house,Wally then heads over to this door so he can watch him leave and then about 15 minutes before Garrett comes home from school, he is right back here! Do your pets have any routines like this? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Skilled Nursing Care In The United States Is Hard To Find

OK~ As many of you know, my life has been fairly crazy lately. I love busy and I love crazy. I honestly think it beats the alternative of sitting around and having nothing to do. For the past 5 1/2 weeks my family and I have been consumed with necrotizing pancreatitis. My Dad was diagnosed with this life threatening infection on August 27, 2012. This Mom has had her eyes opened to the good and the bad within our medical system here in the United States. I am forever grateful for the people that have taken care of my Dad and continue to pray that Dad will get stronger each day.

Meet My Dad The Miracle Man
We are fortunate to reside 1 1/2 hours from Rochester, Minnesota, which is home to the Mayo Clinic.
I am very, very thankful for the advances in medical care, as my Dad is alive today because of some of those "rare" machines that are only available at St. Marys hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. The Doctors and Nurses that have cared for him throughout this whole process have been awesome people. They have worked hard to keep him alive and supported our family along this journey.

Now that Dad has been dismissed from the hospital and sent to a skilled nursing home facility my head is beginning to spin. My Dad does need extensive medical care so our choices of where to move him to were few and far between. We had the choice of Decorah, Iowa (2 hours from home) or a local facility. Well, this is a no brainer. Of course we chose the local facility. I have no problems with the people that work there or the facility itself. What bothers me is the fact that this facility is supposed to be a skilled care facility and we are on Day #4 here and the nurses are still learning how to care for him. There seems to be a line of communication that simply does not exist in the system we have in place today. I do have faith that the nurses will figure out a system that will work. But really? Should it take four days for a skilled nursing facility to learn how to manage a patient?

I understand that all patients have different needs and all bodies heal differently. But, to the best of my knowledge there are certain things that are taught in nursing school that these nurses should know how to do. These nurses are having to learn (in fours days) how to change/clean a drain tube and change his dressing. I just assumed that when he arrived at a skilled nursing facility the nursing staff would know how to care for him. Ummmm- learning process for all! But hey, it's coming- By Day #10, a system will be in place.

I am learning that not all medical facilities do things a certain way. I am also learning that skilled nursing home facilities do not have the staff to meet the needs of the residents. I ask this question, "What happens to those people that live in more rural areas of the United States than we do? Where do these people go to get care in skilled nursing facilities?" I would love to hear what you have to say on this issue.

I am assuming, and I might add that I never like to assume anything, that he has been placed in this facility due to Medicare mandates. My Dad has worked hard all of his life, paid into the system, and carried health insurance. My thoughts are- Dad should be able to receive the medical care he needs when he needs it. All of the other facilities in our area, and there are several, do not care for patients with needs that he has. Drain tubes and open wounds are something that skilled nursing facilities do not like to offer care for. And again, I am assuming it is due to the lack of Medicare funds that are paid to skilled nursing facilities.

Where do people with these medical needs go? I am learning that facilities to take care of people are not readily available in the United States of America. Have we as a country focused so much on ourselves that we have forgotten that we need to provide care for people when they are sick? Oh yeah, and that day Mom took Dad to the Emergency Room- Would someone tell me why someone would go to the Emergency Room, check in, get a can of soda and walk around the area chatting with visibly sick people?

All I can say is that we have a lot of work to do in our country when it comes to meeting the basic needs of our citizens. People that have worked hard, paid into the system, and donated to charity after charity throughout the years should be offered (as every citizen should) top notch medical care. This is the United States of America......My head is still spinning. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Things I Learned Today That I Wish I Had Not

OK~ As a Mom I am always learning new things. Today was a day that I really did not need to learn about the following and I am sharing my experiences so they do not happen to you!

  • When your parents (secifically Senior Citizens) open a cell phone account, make sure that both of them are on the account. This account becomes almost unaccessible when one of them is hospitalized. Ugggggghhhhhhh-----really opened my eyes!

  • We had not purchased a cd from the music department at Wal-Mart in a really long time. Now I know why. Garrett opened the cd, placed it in the cd player in the car (yes, we still have one of those) and it began to skip. Oh yeah......$11.88 later we find out that all of that packaging that it took teeth, nails and lots of oomph to get through was useless! This situation is probably not the fault of Wal-Mart, but I am sure they have a no return policy on opened cd's as most stores do.

  • Cock roaches are UGLY! My Mom and I saw one waltzing across a parking lot today. Yes, in a parking lot in Iowa! I was taken back, as I have never seen a cock roach that big here in our great state of Iowa. My Mom tromped on it, but not hard enough. As we walked through the same area  a half hour later to find it moving. Yes, that brown, ugly thing was strolling after my 70 year old Mother smashed it. Those things are creepy and tough! I might add Mom stomped on it again and I know it is now no longer strolling across that parking lot.
So----tomorrow is a new day and I am sure that it will be filled with another day of adventure. Garrett needs to get to town to get gas in his truck- that in itself will add excitement to the day. I hope he has enough in the tank to get to town.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Highlights of Bloggy Conference 2012

OK~ Now that I am home from Bloggy Conference, and this is what I came home too, and then some! I will admit the Thirty One Bag is mine and another bag on the table is mine- but really, do I have to see the actual table?

My goal today was to see the actual table and I am sad to report that this table still looks like this!  So, my new goal tomorrow is to see my kitchen table.

Bloggy Conference was a time of reconnecting with friends and making new memories!
Tiffany Noth welcoming a Conference Attendee

Jessica from Headbands of Hope inspired all of us.

Beautiful Headbands!

A fun restaurant with fine food and great conversation- Life doesn't get much better than this!

Supper was fabulous!

And then there was this statue. This Iowa Mom seriously needs to get out more. This was the Fountain in Cincinnati. I'm still trying to find the meaning behind all of this. I do believe I need to take a crash course in the Arts!

A Fountain That I Need To Understand

The people are what made Bloggy Conference 2012 so special for me. Amazing people making a difference in the lives of so many people is what Bloggy Conference 2012 was all about for this Iowa Mom! I cannot wait for Bloggy Conference 2013- Sherry Martz and Tiffany Noth are a class act. The friendships and connections that I have made through Bloggy Conference are priceless. Where else can I find people that "get" me, inspire me, and encourage me to work hard! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
