Why You Should Attend A Blog Conference

Guest Blog Post: Sharon Graham of Sharon The Moments
I would like to introduce you to my friend Sharon Graham. Sharon and I met at Bloggy Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio this past Fall. Sharon writes about her life at Sharon The Moments. Do take a swing over to her blog, as Sharon is an amazing writer and photographer!
Why You Should Attend A Blog Conference
When I first entered the world of blogging, I felt it would be an easy transition into the blogosphere.  After all, I love to write, I love my family, and I love taking pictures; three great attributes that make a great blog, right?  I thought so.
But something was missing.  My puzzle pieces were not fitting together and I didn’t know why.
What I forgot to factor in was the aspect of a strong readership base, a network of sponsors and supporters, an understanding of my brand, knowing how to utilize S.E.O., and just plain having a network of other bloggers that have the same goal as me to support one another.   These areas are components that make a great blog greater.   Then a friend suggested I find a blog conference and attend.  And so I did just that!
That’s when I realized the reason I was unable to complete my puzzle was because I didn’t have all the pieces.   Attending a blogging conference gave me those missing pieces and so much more.
I learned how to identify my brand and what it means to have a brand.
I learned that social media comes in many forms, not just Facebook.
I learned the value in utilizing each area of social media such as Twitter and LinkedIn
I learned the value of pictures in a blog post.
I learned how to define my niche in my writing style.
I learned I need to create a schedule for my posts and to be consistent.
I learned that dinner with other bloggers can and will lead to dancing in the isles.
I learned to write as I write, not trying to write like someone else.
I learned the value in being professional in my blogs and other social media communication.
I learned the need to evolve, to be ready to change.
I learned great techniques for writing humor posts.
I learned that content is king.
I learned about another wonderful bloggy conference scheduled for March 2013 BlissDom.
And that was just in the first day!
But of all the wonderful things I learned while attending my very first Bloggy Conference, the best gift I took away was the friendships I made that will last a life time!!   So whether a newbie or a seasoned veteran blogger, I can promise you, attending a Bloggy Conference you will leave with smiles, loads of information, fond memories and new found friends.   You will not be disappointed.

Stocking Stuffers For Tweens and Teens

The Little Things Really Do Matter

OK~ Another feast has come and gone. Now, it's time to gear up for the next big feast, Christmas. Christmas not only brings lots of good food, but it also brings a lot of gifts. The commercialization that now accompanies all of our holidays is reality. I get it that retailers need to get the merchandise out in a timely manner, which is defined in vague terms. For many, timely manner would be the week before a major holiday . In all reality, the planning for any holiday when it comes to retail begins months in advance.

From 1985-1995, I spent many hours working in the field of retail. The one thing that I really looked forward to every year was changing the store front window to a Christmas theme. Once Thanksgiving hit, we geared up for a fun holiday themed window. Since I worked in a shoe store; there were shoes, purses, socks, and anything shoe care related to be placed in those windows. The excitement of decorating the windows dwindled over time, as the fire department said we could no longer have lights in the windows. I guess they have their reasons *sigh*. Sure blew the wind out of our sail! I look around our community today and sadly there are not many decorated store front windows. A sign of the times, as labor costs are probably too high.

The little things really do matter. Kids like to visit with Santa, families enjoy going out and cutting down a "real" Christmas tree, and kids are gearing up to present their Sunday School Christmas programs. Ahhh yes, the afternoon of baking and decorating sugar cookies; pictures and movies for the family record books to treasure for years.

Times are very different now as we transition from holiday to holiday. Often times it seems there is no down time in between any of them. Doesn't it seem like Halloween just transitioned into Christmas this year? Most importantly, remember it is the little things that really do matter. Enjoy your family, your health, and remember to count your blessings every day!

Our youngest son is now 17.............the other night when he went to bed I told him, "Good Night." My mind went back to the many, many years when he would have to tell me, "Buenos Noches" every night. No, we are not Spanish, we speak English in our house, but some cartoon character introduced him to those words and for MANY years that was how we told each other "Good Night." Yep, the little things really do matter. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Things You Need To Do On Thanksgiving

OK~ Thanksgiving sure seemed to creep up on my doorstep this year. Funny thing, here in Iowa; our grass is actually greener now than it was in July. I can recall many times when we have traveled through snow and in the cold to go enjoy a nice, hot Thanksgiving meal. Not the case this year- 2012 is a warm one. Actually, maybe 60's for the actual day of Thanksgiving.

I've got three things you need to do on Thanksgiving- Ready?  Here they are.

1.  Eat turkey. Yes, you need to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. Our Iowa turkey farmers appreciate your support. My family is probably jumping up and down, as I am not cooking this year! I do recall the year that I kind of forgot to start the process of thawing Mr. Turkey three days ahead of the actual cooking day. My solution was to run water all ovcr it. Worked OK, until I started to cut into it to remove the gizzards, etc. Yep, Mr. Turkey seriously had the sharp blade of a knife stuck in him. And then there was the year that I cooked the heart and gizzards, turkey and all!  Let's just say it took me a few years to cook another turkey after that little incident.

2.  Surround yourself with family and friends. There have been years where our little family of four and our two dogs have been home Thanksgiving Day and it was OK. It just wasn't as exciting as the times we have gotten together with extended family. If you know of someone that does not have anywhere to go, invite them over. You know, those turkeys do produce a lot of meat and if this means less left overs, who cares?  Thanksgiving is about being grateful and it's also a good time to show others that you really do care.

3.  Eat a lot! This is the one day out of the year that you can eat whatever you want. Enjoy that turkey, those mashed potatoes/gravy, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, and whatever else your Thanksgiving table include. And on Thanksgiving, it is all calorie free. Go and indulge!

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you! Eat turkey, surround yourself with friends and family and most importantly EAT A LOT!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Christmas Gift Ideas For The Hard To Buy For 17 Year Old Boy

OK~ Christmas is getting closer and I've got a 17 year old boy in the house that's kind of hard to buy for. I thought I'd share some of the things that he enjoys, and maybe give you some ideas as to what you could buy your hard to buy 17 year old boy.

The Nexus 7 16GB Tablet from Google is available at Staples. Our 17 year old son purchased this tablet from Staples, with his own money when it came out a few months ago. Seriously, a great purchase!  He loves his tablet and spends a lot of time on it. He listens to music, plays games, and stays in touch socially with friends and family. I might also add that the colors on this tablet are fabulous. A Nexus 7 16 GB Tablet from Google will not disappoint your 17 year old!

The Samsung Galaxy S III will not disappoint! If your son is due for a new cell phone, Christmas would be the ideal time to give him a new one. Yes, the Samsung Galaxy S III  will be sure to please! A smart phone with an 8 Mega Pixel auto focus camera built in, Wi-Fi, Google Search, and almost anything else you can think of. This smart phone rocks! Our 17 year old son enjoys his (I must add, I enjoy mine too)! The photos are fabulous and this cell phone is just like carrying around a mini tablet.

Samsung Galaxy S III (Photo Courtesy of Samsung)

If your 17 year old loves the outdoors. How about a truck seat cover designed with the great outdoors in mind? Yep, this one will work every single time!

Truck Seat Cover

If you happen to have a trap shooter in your household like we do, your shooter would appreciate a new shooting vest! Here in Iowa, high school trapshooting is growing by leaps and bounds. Christmas is the perfect time of year to look forward to the 2013 season which kicks off in March.

Cabela's Sporting Clay Vest

Cabela's offers a nice selection of shooting accessories and gear. From trap, sporting clays, to your everyday shooting sports; Cabela's has your 17 year old boy covered.

Sometimes I think it was much easier to purchase toy tractors, bouncy balls, Disney Movies, and toys in general. Oh well, he is 17 and it is time to accept the fact that the baby in this house will be 18 years old in the near future. Yikes!

I hope this short list of four items will help you with your Christmas list. 17 year old boys can be challenging to buy for, but when you tap into their passions; your shopping will be much easier. As you can tell we have a 17 year old that enjoys technology and the great outdoors. Hopefully these four gift ideas will make your list easier to complete.

So, what are you waiting for? Time to get shopping for that hard to buy for 17 year old boy. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Crazy Train Called Life

OK~ Can my life seriously get any crazier? This past week I have been inside a tire shop on three different days. I have visited a muffler shop on two different days. I have visited an auto repair store two different times.......Um- do you see a pattern here?

Yes, this craziness all started when my husband and son invested money in a 2000 F150 4x4 pick-up truck that did not run! Yep, you read that correct. The project involved lots of hours of bonding time between a Father and his Son. And in the midst of this project, it allowed this Mom to bond with the salesmen at the auto repair supply stores. A purchase here, a return there- yeah, you know how that goes, right?

I am happy to report that the truck is running.

Truck Is Running!

There is no longer a flat tire to be found (anywhere on this property)- fingers crossed!  The car tire that was repaired yesterday, due to a long nail, was lodged in a tire on my car.

And the muffler shop- let me just say that next time I pray that my husband tackles any muffler project himself or finds a new muffler shop. There is something to be said to the following statement. "If you want the job done right, you need to do it yourself!" We have found ourselves eating those words over and over this past week.

So, let's bring on a new week. Next week is a week of Thanksgiving! I am thankful for a hubby that can take on a lot of fix it jobs. Oh yeah, and then there was the oven repair project that got tossed into the mix this week too. So......the tools came in the house.

Tools That Have Been Used A Lot This Past Month!

On the bright side, I now have an oven that works! This crazy train called life has spun this Mom into a few too many circles this past week- I will welcome a train without crazy anytime soon. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It Is November And Christmas Is All Around Us

OK~ It is November 15th and Christmas is a little more than a month away. But man, let me tell you, our local community is all decked out for the holidays. Christmas trees are up, the lights and wreaths are hung, AND Santa was even in our local mall this evening!

Each year the season seems to get earlier. In all reality, the calendar doesn't change, it just seems that our crazy lives get crazier. I wonder if things will ever slow down. I am thinking, probably not. This Mom is enjoying life and going to go along for the ride. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Science Museum of Minnesota: For Kids Of All Ages

OK~ We recently had a nice visit to the Science Museum of Minnesota. What a cool place! I must say that kids of all ages, and I do mean that, would seriously enjoy this museum. I had my 17 year old son in tow and it was interesting to see how much he took in.

Garrett checking out the Hydraulic Lab at the Minnesota Science Museum

This is just one of several activity stations that were throughout the museum.

Activity Station at Science Museum of Minnesota

And a museum would not be complete without a dinosaur or two, right?

One of Several dinosaurs on display in the Dinosaurs and Fossils Gallery: Science Museum of Minnesota

The Science Museum of Minnesota is located in St. Paul, right near the Mississippi River. A gallery dedicated to the Mississippi River is also very cool! It is fitting that the Charles E. tow boat is also available for guests at the museum to walk through.

The Charles E.
Another cool thing to do while visiting the Science Museum of Minnesota is to schedule sometime in the Cell Lab. Kids that are school age and older are invited to wear white lab coats, eye protection and take on the role of a scientist. Cool stuff happening in the Human Body Gallery at The Science Museum of Minnesota.

If you are on a tight time schedule, I would recommend purchasing your tickets ahead of time online.  With so many events happening at the Science Museum of Minnesota, I would highly recommend becoming a member of the Science Museum of Minnesota. You pay a yearly fee and receive perks all year long!

Next time you are in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, be sure to put the Science Museum of Minnesota on your to do list! This is a place you will want to return many unique exhibits and lots to learn! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*My family and I did receive admission tickets to the museum. We did pay for our food and parking. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Monday, Monday, Monday

OK~ There are seven Mondays left until Christmas, that's maybe the best thing I learned about this weeks Monday. Two flat tires, two defective smart phones, AND a car repair shop that did not make the necessary repairs. So, tomorrow will be better! We have two new, what appear to be working, smart phones and the tires have air in them. Hello, tire shop tomorrow!

Oh yeah, and then there was that little call to the Dr. office. My 17 year old has been complaining of a sore throat for two weeks, thought it was time to get him in. After a period of time it was determined that all Dr.'s, in all offices, within the hospital network, were booked for the day; we were told he could be seen in the morning. That was fine with me. But, what do people do with young kids that are running fevers and really, really sick? I guess this is why our emergency rooms are swamped with people, sad state of affairs from this Mom's point of view. Monday, I really did like you at 7:00 A.M., but sure learned to dislike you by 3:00 P.M. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Dog Treats For The Taking

OK~ This full bag of dog treats was on top of the kitchen table. This empty bag is now located in the middle of our Family Room.

I stepped outside for two minutes and came into find this on the living room floor. I thought to myself, "That bag was 3/4 full." This appears to be the guilty party............

For now....he's ready for Christmas to roll around and he's lucky, as it is not that far away! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Re-Cap of 2012 Iowa To Florida Road Trip

OK~ I have had time to reflect upon the Iowa to Florida Road Trip my family and I took last March. We were extremely blessed to have been guests in five stunning resorts in Florida. If you are in the process of planning a family get-a-way to Florida, do consider staying on these properties. The hospitality was top notch and the views, let's just say were amazing!

Our first night was at Tuckaway Shores in Indialantic, Florida. Stunning views, amazing amenities and hospitality that warmed our hearts!

Tuckaway Shores: Ocean Front Property

We were welcomed with smiles and warm sunshine upon check-in at The Gulfview Waterfront Resort  in the heart of the Florida Keys, in Marathon, Florida. A smaller, family friendly property that offers all the amenities of the 21st Century while taking you back to a slower step in time in the beautiful Florida Keys.

Lush Grounds: The Gulfview Waterfront Resort- Marathon, Florida

Our Florida vacation continued with a relaxing night at Wright By The Sea, located in Delray Beach. Again, we were greeted with smiles, stunning views, and a resort that welcomed this Iowa family with open arms.

Ocean View: Wright By The Sea- Delray Beach, Florida

River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp located on the Indian River in Jensen Beach, Florida; offered us a taste of the tropics. The lush, green, colorful property here was just beautiful. Our Cabin was fully furnished while surrounded with abundant tropical colors! A little R & R was around every corner.

River Palms Cottages and Fish Camp: Lush, Tropical Gardens

Our final destination was Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe located in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Fun, tropical music greeted us with clean, comfortable accommodations. A large waterpark, beach, and numerous amenities entertained us for two full days!

Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe- View From Our Room

A huge thank you to all of these properties for hosting our family as we ventured through Florida in March of 2012!

If you are planning a Florida vacation, do consider staying at any one of these properties; you will be glad you did. Let them know the Iowa Mom sent you; as this Mom enjoyed meeting each and every employee at each of these fabulous Florida resorts! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Time To Vote 2012

OK~ We are less than 12 hours away from the next Presidential Election in the United States. Due to the fact that I will be tight on time tomorrow, I went and exercised my right to vote today. It was quite evident, that I was not the only one that was going to be tight on time tomorrow, as there were maybe 20 other people there voting while I was.

Now, in many places across the United States, 20 people voting in the same location would be a low number. But here, in North Iowa, that was a lot of people. I do not recall a time when I have waited in a line longer than two people to vote, until today.

I was pleased to see that people are exercising their right to vote. Many people live in countries where they have absolutely no say in who becomes the next leader. I must tell you, in my years of voting, I have voted for the elected President one time! My track record of voting for the winner when it comes to a Presidential Election is simply not good.

My mailbox has been bursting with political papers for many weeks and the phone calls, let's just say I've had enough. I really wish all of the money that has been invested in all of these mailings and phone calls would be put into circulation where it is really needed. To the best of my knowledge, our country has a very large deficit. Seems to me that some of that money could be put towards that.

I am just a Mom in Iowa, so I am sure my idea is one that will not be taken seriously. Whoever wins tomorrow night wins. Sadly there will be people taking the election results to a whole new extreme. Social Media will be hopping with tweets and status updates, and many will unfollow their Twitter followers, as well as some Facebook Friends. I have seen many people unfriend each other over this campaign; that to me is a sad state of affairs. In the grand scheme of things, if someone has to unfriend someone over an election, they were probably not a true friend to begin with. I do not know who will win and who will lose, but I do know that I will accept the winner for who he is.

Go out and vote! I started this process when I met Michelle Bachman and then attended the Iowa Caucus 2012 and I finished the process by voting today. We have the freedom to vote so be sure to exercise your right. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tools Are Tools, Right?

OK~ I am walking around with two screws in one hand and a hammer in the other. My 17 year old son says to me, "How are you going to use a hammer with those?" Good Question, you think?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Time To Move Back In Time

OK~ We all know that life gets pretty crazy and things seem to move pretty fast. If you want to move to a slower pace, today is your day. Most of us in the United States (do other countries do this?) turn our clocks back one hour tonight- yes! This means we all get an extra hour of sleep. So, if you find yourself complaining over the course of the next month or so, that there is not enough time in your day. Remember, that on November 3, 2012, you gained one hour. Now, how you use that hour; is totally up to you! Fall rolls on and our clocks move back. For this Mom, it will be getting an extra hour of shut eye! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

All Of That In There? Yes, Really!

OK~ That desk is all in there? Yep, it sure is. I recently purchased a desk for myself and of course it came in this box.

My hubby's remarks were, "That whole desk is in there!" Ahhhh yes it was. I am not the hands on person in this house. I do know that a hammer, flat screw driver, drill, and other were all necessary tools when it comes to putting things like this together. But, when it comes to actually using them with the right screw, nail or whatever that thing a ma jig is called- let's just say that is not my thing!

Today I learned that are a gazillion screws that it takes to put a desk together like this. There are pan screws, flat head screws, short screws, long screws, black screws, brown screws....and the list goes on and on. For the life of me, I could not tell them apart. My job was to read the instructions and supply my hubby with what he needed to assemble this.

Only an hour into this project and look what I have!

I am thankful that I was able to read the instructions and somewhat find the correct parts. Most of all I am grateful that my hubby is able to put stuff together for me. Lord knows, a project like this would have taken me, myself, and I a whole 24 hours. Those pictures in that brochure seriously made NO sense to this Mom! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I purchased this desk. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.
