Three Generations And It Still Does Not Run Properly

OK~ Everyone's got to have toys like this around an Iowa farm. Yep, how many boys ( of all generations) does it take to get a go-kart running?  Well- let's count. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and it ran a whole 30 yards! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Chickens Roaming With Lots of Junk Around Equals Cold Hard Cash

OK~ This beautiful very ugly trailer arrived in our yard a couple weeks ago.

And here is a glimpse of some of the stuff that was headed into that trailer. Lots of metal! And in case you did not know, this stuff is worth money. Only $145.00 a ton, but that's not too shabby from this Mom's point of view.

And of course over the course of the three days this trailer was in our yard, the heat indices were well over 100 degrees!  Gotta love Summertime in Iowa!

A lot of hard work rounding up all that metal and then getting it all loaded up. And then making sure it all landed inside the trailer, not out of it.

Three days later, lots of metal on board and this was a beautiful sight~ Out the yard and down the road it went.

I met up with the driver at the business location a few miles later.

The trailer hit the scale.

I waited about ten minutes in the office area. Let's just say the office area was interesting. I walked in and the owner says, "Mrs. Broers, you can have a seat." I looked around and then said, "Can I sit there? That chair won't fall apart, will it?" Open Mouth, Insert Foot! What was I thinking? This was the man who was going to hand me my cash! It should not matter that the dirt was extremely thick on the walls, chickens were roaming, and the furniture was taped together; after all this man was going to give me cash! Ten minutes later I had my cash in hands and I was on my way out the door.

There was no charge for the trailer, as we were within the 50 mile radius that this particular scrap yard services. I had a happy seventeen year old, as his hard work had paid off! This really is a great way to clean up that old "junk" that is laying around in those older farm buildings. A good job for a 17 year old boy- but geeshe, I wonder if anyone has ever considered painting these trailers or the office area? They might have more business if someone spiffied them up, you think? A Form of Diet Control~ You Think?

OK~ I made a batch of donuts out of refrigerator biscuits. Cut them up, tossed them in fryer, and sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on them. I then made the announcement, "Donuts are ready!"  Oh yeah, and this is what I now have~ zilch!

Two boys, ages 45 and 17, quickly devoured them! I said to myself, " Ummm, a good form of diet control!" Next time I will make a plate for myself before I make the announcement, geeshe! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Iowa Corn Fields In July 2012

OK~ This is serious folks. I do not have a lot to say today. This is what several corn fields across the great corn state of Iowa look like! This is July 27th and in a normal year this field would have this color towards the end of September. When the media is referring to the poor corn fields across America's heartland, this is what they are referring to. From what I can see here, this field will have zero bushels per acre. A sad summer for all of us- I never want to see corn fields like this again in the month of July. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Reasons Why You Should Not Toss Your Trash Out Of Your Car Window

OK~ I had an interesting day today. Yep, some person idiot decided to toss their trash out of their car window while traveling down the highway. And who do you think they were traveling ahead of? You guessed it, me! After taking a "hit" I thought about this. I have three reasons why you should not throw your trash out of your car window.

  1. Your trash seriously becomes a missile. Imagine a bag of "stuff" that is tossed out of your car window bouncing off of the hood of a car. Yep, that hood is on my car. That "stuff" does not stay in the bag and it goes everywhere!
    2.  You look like a loser. Seriously, who stoops that low? There are garbage cans at gas stations, car
washes, restaurants, and outside of stores that many of us patronize daily. I seriously hope the
person (oops), idiot, that stoops that low received some damage to their car.

    3.  Literring is illegal. Did you know that if a law enforcement person witnessed you tossing your
trash out of your car windows you could be fined? Due to the large amount of trash that was
thrown from this vehicle, I question if people actually do get fined for this. It appeared that these
people were experts at this type of activity, and probably do it often.

So, the lesson I learned. Next time this happens, I will step on the gas to get closer to the vehicle as opposed to slowing down. Due to the fact that I slowed down I was unable to get a license plate number. A little old fashioned respect goes along way. What bothers me the most of this incident is the fact that their appeared to be children in this vehicle. And we all wonder why our kids are the way they are. Geeeesshhhhheeee----- After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

From the Garden To The Table: Garden Fresh Onions

OK~ It has been a hot summer here in Iowa. These onions are directly out of our garden. They are laying on the lawn. Now that, my friends, is not a very green lawn!

We eat a lot of chicken fajitas. Nothing fancy, just chicken fajita meat and onions. I love it when I can walk out the back door, head out to the garden and pull up a couple of onions. The sad thing of this- the season will end and I will wish we had planted more.

What goodies are you getting out of your garden? I know I appreciated these onions, as they were so flavorful. There is someting about garden fresh goodies that this Mom loves. We have not had more than 30 drops of rain in a month and I can honestly say that our lawn is toast and our garden appreciates the garden hose! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Bring The Outdoors To Your Family: Book A Stay At River Palm Cottages And Fish Camp

OK~ The Iowa to Florida road trip offered a lot of beautiful scenery. River Palm Cottages And Fish Camp was simply a family friendly tropical destination. Numerous cottages are available to rent. The cottages sleep two, four, six and even up to eight people and offer all the comforts of home. So, if you and your family enjoy camping, but really do not want to rough it; this is a fabulous option for you. Kitchens are stocked with dishes and cooking supplies, along with the amenities that you would expect at most resorts.

Cottage #21
River Palm Cottages And Fish Camp is located right on the Indian River lagoon near Jensen Beach, Florida. By the way, if you have never visited Jensen Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, do make the drive over there from this camp. It is about a ten minute drive, and the beach is beautiful!

Jensen Beach

There is a nice dock and beach area to fish off of, as well. We did not fish while staying here, but did speak with other guests that did. One family brought there boat up from the Miami area for a few days of fishing. They commented that the fishing was great, and the River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp was an ideal location. They appreciated the ability to park there boat and trailer right in the driveway next to their cottage. While fishing in the area you can catch Ladyfish, Redfish, Tarpon, and Snook. I must admit, me being a Northern gal I did not recognize any of these fish. Now, if a walleye would be mentioned; I could relate!

The camp itself is absolutely stunning- these are just a few of the beautiful sights around the property.

Flowers Around The Property

Banana Tree

This Iowa Mom loved the lush grounds! The property is clean, very green, and family friendly. If you are looking for more of a corporate feel, this property will not light your fire. For families looking for an outdoor experience with the comforts of home, this property will fufill your families needs.

Beach Area Along Indian River Lagoon

If you and your family are looking for a place to vacation that is off the beaten path and tied into nature,   River Palm Cottages And Fish Camp is perfect for you and your family. Go ahead- book your stay here today. Let them know that the Iowa Mom sent you! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Summertime At The Gun Club In Iowa

OK~ It is summertime and in Iowa our summers are often short and sweet. Yes, this Mom has learned to embrace her hubby and son's love of guns. Shooting sports are no different than any other sport. They take time, patience, and practice.

Our local gun club had a fun day last Saturday and it was just that. Father and Son sharing an experience they are both passionate about.

Father/Son Shooting At The Ventura Gun Club

The skies were blue, the temps were close to triple digits; yet it was a good day! Check out that bright orange target.

Dad can shoot!

And here we go...Yes, that would be my son, the one sporting the shirt that says "Beer Police!" Gotta love it.....Father/Son having a fun day at the gun club.

Shooting Clay Targets At The Ventura Gun Club

When our boys were younger, this Mom hit the local swimming pool every day during those hot, summer days! As they have matured and grew up, our activies have changed. Trap shooting has been a life changing experience for our seventeen year old son. Trap shooting has taught him responsibility, taught him to be patient, and most of all he gets to hang around with old guys (and gals)  that love to talk about guns. He is allowed to be a teenage boy and be surrounded with some great role models.

What types of activities do you do with your kids in the summer? I remember while sitting on the side of the swimming pool about five years ago and one Mom said, "I wonder what we will be doing for summer fun when our kids are older?" For this Mom, it's been the local gun club. Quite frankly, it was not what I envisioned! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Cantaloupe,Cucumbers, Apples, Corn And Soybeans: Iowa Has All Of Them

OK~ I do not claim to be an expert when it comes to gardening. How exciting this is- We have several cantaloupe in our garden, as well as several cucumbers (Surprise, Surprise, Surprise)!

The cool thing about this is that we did not plant any cucumbers until really, really late. They are trying to thrive on the opposite end of the garden. I was digging around last night to see how many cantaloupe we actually had. I was ecstatic when I found a load of cucumbers! So, I am assuming that the cucumbers that we planted last year decided to seed themselves.

Ah yes, and the cantaloupe are flourishing like wild fire. Any tips on when they are ready to be picked from the garden would be appreciated. We did not have much luck with watermelon last year, so we thought we would try cantaloupe.

And then there is the saga of our apple trees. They decided to bloom a few days before we had a killing frost in April. Therefore, ZERO apples this year!

The corn fields around us are really beginning to fire up. Here's one that I saw today.

Rain would be very welcome here in North Iowa. Our area corn and soybean fields really need a few inches of water. Are you blessed with rain where you are?

On the bright side, the lawn mowers are idle. The money saved on gas for the mowers is sure to be sent to the power company. I'm trying not to complain about the excessive heat, as this body cannot stand the cold of winter. So, I'll kick back and savor the flavors from the garden and pray that the rains come soon! I actually have two young men wanting to mow the lawn, go figure! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mason City Tire Service Lightened My Load Today

OK~ I had been dealing with this little shake when my car got up to around 50 miles per hour, no big deal, right? The car was running smooth from an engine point of view, but I finally said, "Enough!" So, I ventured into town this morning and swung into Mason City Tire Service, located at 1823 South Monroe, in Mason City, Iowa. Lon and his crew are always on top of their game and have always given us great service through the years.

Inside Mason City Tire Service

Lon said, "Let's take it for a test drive." The good news was there were no squeaky noises, so the bearings were good. Once we got out on the test track (55 mph highway), sure enough, we hit 50 miles per hour and the shakes kicked in. He then said, "It's coming from the rear tires." This was good- I thought to myself, "Why didn't I bring this to him a couple weeks ago?"

We got back to the tire shop and they drove my car on in. About ten minutes later, Lon says, "Sara, come back and let me show you what is going on." I thought, "Oh Lord, what did I do?" This was my problem.

It is VERY dry out here in the country and I do drive on gravel. We are just a little over a mile off of the highway, so it's not a lot of gravel. But, enough to make the car shaky when the gravel and dirt build up in the wheel wells. Twenty pounds of gravel and rock were removed from both rear wheels. I'm thinking, "Yeah, my gas mileage just got better!"

$23.00 and some odd cents later I was on my way. Lesson learned, it is a good idea to wash out your wheels when you live on a gravel road. I am thinking this is why I have a 17 year old son in the house, right?

For the time being I will drive a little slower and try not to kick up any dirt or rocks. We quite often battle a road that does not have gravel on it, so I guess I really should not complain. It's often a beaten down mud path to get to the highway. But, due to the Iowa drought this summer, this is what we have today.

Gravel Road in Rural Iowa

Mason City Tire Service is a locally owned business with you, the customer in mind. From the outstanding service I received there today, I highly recommend them. Follow Mason City Tire Service on Facebook and you might find some helpful information. You might not find yourself in the shoes I was in today! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Wally or Skipper~Which One Is Guilty?

OK~ I am part of the guilty party here, as I left this on the kitchen table. When I placed it on the kitchen table it had chicken bones in it. Take note...there are no more bones here!

I'm looking for your guesses....Is Wally guilty?

Or, is Skipper guilty?

So, I am assuming that within a few hours we will know which one is guilty, ugggghhhhhhh! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

An Iowa Road Trip With Red Tractors

OK~  An Iowa road trip today! Gotta love a road trip in Iowa on a hot summer day. I had the opportunity to hitch a ride with my parents to visit family and away we went.

The sun was shining and the corn and soybean fields were of great interest to the three of us. Yes, there is a crisis in the Mid-West. The corn does not look healthy and the soybeans are just beginning to show stress too.

Cornfield in North Central Iowa

Love this view- I grew up with red tractors all around me!  If you love red tractors~This display of Case I-H tractors is one you need to check out on Highway 3, West of Shell Rock, Iowa.

If You Love Red Tractors~This Is For You!

And of course, I had to get a close up along the way! Several red tractors all polished, shiny and on display along an Iowa highway~ How cool is that?

A fine red tractor!

And yes, my Dad, the retired farmer was driving. So, a road trip in Iowa would not be complete without a stroll through the lot of an implement dealer. And let me show you the treasures we found! From new farm equipment to equipment that might be used someday, an Iowa implement dealer has it all.

Old/New Farm Equipment
All in all we had a fun day. It was fun to see family and check out what is going on in the heartland. I hope you had a wonderful Sunday, how does yours compare? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Goodness of An Iowa Garden

OK~ It is a hot, dry summer here in Iowa. Therefore I feel blessed to have a garden that has all of this to offer with much more to come!

The First Carrot!

The goodness continues!

Green Beans Run Abundant!

So far....Radishes, Green Beans and Carrots. Oh yeah, and onions- we've been enjoying them for about a week now. We now wait to see what our canteloupe look like. We did not have a lot of luck with our watermelon last year. Our fingers are crossed that the canteloupe is a success in 2012! Here is what today's catch looks like~ Hungry yet? The Day A Tree Grabbed My Son's Glasses

OK~ The chaos of summertime with a teen in the house. Gotta love it when he comes in and says, "Mom, Can you help me find my glasses?" I must have looked at him funny, as he said, "In the grove!"
I glanced out the window, yes it was 9:30 p.m.; which means the sun has set and there is minimal daylight left. I responded with, "Do you know where you lost them?" He responded, "If I could find them I would be wearing them!"

At that point I knew we had to hunt for a flashlight. I am thinking this Mom needs one of those Mom tool kits for Christmas, as there was not a flashlight to be found in the house, garage, or pantry. Living in rural Iowa does have an upside, the neighbors are all relatives. So, I called my brother and asked him if he could come over with a flashlight and explained to him that Garrett had lost his glasses in the grove. He responded with, "Oh My!" Keep in mind Garrett has the worst eyes in the house, so without his glasses, everything is pretty fuzzy.

The three of us ventured out to the grove. This is the path that we had with flashlights in tow. At this point I was envisioning a $500 visit to the Eye Dr. in the morning. I had not only feared we would not find them, but I also feared he had tromped on them while looking for them on his own.

The Path In And Out Of The Grove

And around the corner this is the view. In the dark this all looked a lot different! Garrett is about 6'3" tall and counting- so it made sense that a tree grabbed his glasses. I do wonder how long he tried to search for them on his own.

In The Grove

Now, you may be wondering what he was doing in the grove at that time of night. Well, he was carrying a pellet gun and shooting targets and whatever else boys find to shoot in a grove. He did lay the pellet gun down where a tree had grabbed his glasses- smart kid! After shining flashlights around for about five minutes, I turned around and saw his glasses laying in an open area. The area was near where he had placed the pellet gun and they were surprisingly intact!

The discussion on the way out was how I was going to remove the scrapes, scratches and thorns from my legs and arms. I ended up with one ding that took a little more care than the rest, not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

Proof That I Was There

I do realize that I could have set back in the house and let the boys venture out to find his glasses, but this Mom loves an adventure. I have never been known to sit back and let everyone else experience the action. The path in and out of this area is not one I care to venture through again. Next time I will have long pants, long sleeves and be covered in mosquito repellant.

Today we are all thankful that Garrett has his glasses and my skin is recovering from all the dings that those good old Iowa thistles managed to give me. By the way, I do think "that" tree should be on warning, Garrett mentioned something about a hack-saw. I'm thinking we need to invest in one of those straps to keep his glasses on, you think? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Iowa Summer 2012 Continues

OK~ Summertime is in full swing. We survived a week of an excessive heat warning and have now entered the upper 80's for temperatures, which are much more bearable. Unfortunately, this is what a lot of our lawn looks like.

These wildflowers are beautiful! These have been watered regularly. What an amazing difference a little water makes.

And then remember, all of those little kittens that were born about six to eight weeks ago? Well, here is what they look like now.

Yes, we have lots of excitement. Spring brought a lot of new life and with summertime we have growth. For now we pray for rain and hope that Mother Nature sends some rain drops our way soon. On the bright side, we are saving money when it comes to putting gas in the lawn mowers! I actually heard this today , "Mom, when can we mow lawn again?" Go figure.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Moving Things Around On The Farm In Iowa

OK~ Glancing outside this morning and this is what I see. Yep, that would be my 17 year old son.

Do you ever have those moments where you pinch yourself and say, "Really, how did we get here?" Seems like yesterday he was the one rolling the toilet paper all over the house, mushing carrots into the carpet, and chasing the dogs tail around the house. It's a day of hauling out metal and piling it all into one place, a busy day. Gotta love the opportunities that are around every corner. I love the fact that he embraces Iowa and all it has to offer. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
