Three Things That Drive Me Crazy About Facebook

OK~ It is no secret that I love social media. I love that I can be social, inspire others, and help companies share what they have to offer consumers. The last week has been an eye opener to me. Have you ever really thought about what your Facebook status update looks like? Here are three of my observations, and yes, I might add- they drive me crazy!

  • Do not use texting lingo when you update your status on Facebook. The word your is not "ur." It frustrates me when I see companies using grammar like this. I will admit, my grammar is not perfect; but I would sure like to think it is better than that. Oh yeah, and while we are on the topic of the word your. There is a time to use your and you're. We human beings understand that, but that crazy auto-correct doesn't seem to get that yet!
  • Maybe you have a passion for guns, religion, politics, or even pets. Did you know that by updating every single status update with these topics, your friends can choose not to have your updates shown in their news feed? I understand that we all have passions and we should share them, but be careful how often you share them.
  • Parents, wake up! Last evening I found more than 25 kids that I know that are under the age of 13 with a Facebook account, with a fake birthday year! A posting about gun control in schools (hot topic) is what drew my attention to these kids' Facebook pages. Half of these kids are Facebook friends with their parents, which I might add; is a good thing. I do hope all of these parents have the passwords to the Facebook accounts of these young kids, as private messages are not available for everyone to see.
I love Facebook. I love that it is social and we can all share our passions and stay connected. I also learned last evening that teens are using Facebook as a way to stay connected with friends they have met through attending summer camps, now that is cool! There is a lot of good happening in the world of Facebook, we need to grasp the positive things when we can.

The next time you update your status update, maybe think before you post. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. I'm not sure how I would handle all of this if I had a tween in this house!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Weather Rollercoaster

OK~ I reside in North Iowa and like many other parts of the country, we are on a weather roller coaster. July was very, very dry.  We had brown, crunchy grass everywhere in the midst of several heat advisories. What's so ironic about that? Well, according to the calendar we are now in January. January is in the midst of Winter. Winter is supposed to be cold, snowy, and icy. Well, we have had the cold, we have had the snow, and we have had the ice. Yesterday everything was covered in a sheet of ice. Today this is what we have!

Our firewood is really greening up today, and all of this green grass is amazing! Our lawn looks more like it needs to be mowed now, than it did last Summer. I know I have a 17 year old son that was glad to see wet roads this morning, as opposed to icy road conditions.

Yes, that is standing water near the tractor, and a lot of it! In the bean field in the background, there is a pile of snow. Today it is near 38 degrees outside, and tomorrow evening; below zero! With a little bit of snow in the forecast and a very windy day on tap for tomorrow, things will change in a matter of hours.

For now, we are enjoying the green. Are you enjoying the weather roller coaster where you are? If so, I'd love to hear how you are coping! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

St. Augustine, Florida: A Sliver of Paradise

OK~ We stumbled upon St. Augustine, Florida, several years ago on one of our vacations to Walt Disney World. We knew we had an extra day to spare and took a glance at the map. We took note that St. Augustine could be a nice little jaunt off of the I-75 corridor. Let's just say we had such a fabulous visit, so fabulous; that we have returned several times since.

St. Augustine Beach, Florida

St. Augustine is truly a little sliver of paradise. The beaches are beautiful (at least to this Iowa Mom), the historical sites are stunning, and the charm of this city is truly one of a kind. Here are some of the highlights from the oldest city in the United States.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is well worth a visit. Yes, this is a historical site and it does cost money to get into. Keep in mind, your ticket is good for seven days. Parking can be challenging. The city of St. Augustine manages the parking area right in front of the entrance, but can be quite packed early in the day. We have found that it is much cheaper and convenient to park in one of the parking garages in St. Augustine. These garages offer convenience, as well as shade. There is one parking garage approximately one block from the monument, definitely worth checking into. Plan on spending a minimum of two hours here. The upper portion of the fort is only accessible by stairs, so plan accordingly if you are traveling with a stroller or wheelchair. There is much to explore and see without going up to the upper gun deck. Although I must say, the view from the upper gun deck is pretty cool.

Castillo de San Marcos: National Monument

Bring a good pair of walking shoes or sandals. If you really want to see the city, you will want to walk. There are private train/trolley tours that operate throughout the city, but even those offer stops where you will need to walk. The shops here are not only charming, but they are also very unique and fun. Here you will find kite shops, antique shops, candy shops, as well as art galleries. In all the years we have visited, we have always been able to easily spend a whole day checking out all the shops. During that time frame our boys would have been two-twenty years old. The ages of our boys never kept us from experiencing the shops of St. Augustine. Oh yeah, and there are restaurants all over the place. Most have the menus out front, which will give you a pretty good idea as to what the cost and dress code are. The majority of the restaurants are family friendly with a casual dress code.

The beaches out on Highway A1A South are beautiful! The sand is fine, the surf is good, and the sunshine is all around. You will find seashells and a cozy hotel and/or resort to call your home. One of the most affordable, welcoming hotels we have found out on this corridor is La Fiesta Ocean Inn and Suites. The swimming pool is heated (when we first stayed here, it was not) and the rooms are clean with a hop, skip, and a jump to the beach. Located right on the main drag, this Inn will not disappoint.

Fun In The Pool At La Fiesta Ocean Inn And Suites

Spring Break is quickly approaching. Make your vacation plans today. St. Augustine, Florida will not disappoint you and your family. There is so much history, great food, and I almost forgot- you will more than likely have a "ghostly" experience while in the area, as well. Yep, I had one while dining at Harry's Seafood Bar And Grille~ The food was fabulous and the ghostly experience~ One that I have lived to tell about! That is a whole other story in itself.

Go experience St. Augustine, Florida!  Enjoy the beach, history, shops, ghosts, and everything else you can find while in the oldest city in the United States. Find your sliver of paradise this Spring in St. Augustine, Florida.

*I did not receive any product or monetary compensation for this post. My family and I paid for our food, lodging, park entrance fees and everything else while in the St. Augustine area.

Walt Disney World: A Year 2000 Memory

OK~ I am in the process of finding all sorts of pictures, movies and the like for an upcoming high school graduation. I found this fun memory today.

My soon to be high school graduate absolutely loved Buzz Light Year! What this Mom remembers most about this book? She remembers waiting in a very, very long line (in winter coats) to get Buzz Lightyear's signature.

Yep, it was a chilly day at Walt Disney World, but we got what we set out to get! I wonder if Buzz Lightyear signs his name the same way today- anyone know? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Reflections On A Cold January Day In Iowa

OK~ Today is the start of a new semester of high school for the senior in our house, along with a below zero temperature day. There is not a farm cat to be seen, as they are all snuggled in a heated area.     I can only hope that these cats have the mice under control, as I do not need to find one in my house! Garrett left for school, and of course, left the door open. In a matter of three minutes, this is what transpired. It's just cold outside!

Cold, Cold, Cold

Looking outdoors, we see green grass, blue skies, and a dusting of snow. Often times in January we have snow drifts all around the barn, not the case this year. Just by glancing at this, you would think it's maybe 30 degrees outside, and in reality it is below zero.

We are bundling up here in Iowa today! Wool socks, long underwear, hats, gloves, with layers and layers of clothing. I am trying to think back to all of those hot, hot days of Summer 2012. We had several days with a heat advisories and now we have the other extreme. Wind chill advisories will keep all of us on our toes the next few days here in Iowa.

On the bright side, Spring is just around the corner. Spring planting will be happening all around us, in what will seem like no time at all. Will you be staying in today or venturing out? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Football Season Is Still In High Gear

OK~ Remember in September when I attended my first NFL football game in Nashville, Tennessee? I had no idea at the time that I would be watching one the top teams for the 2013 season in the NFL. Yep, those New England Patriots were fun to watch! We were seated amongst several very dedicated New England Patriots fans.

Tennessee Titans Vs. New England Patriots

So, here we are a few months later and it's game day! Thinking back to that warm day in the stadium in Nashville.........I don't think it's gonna be that nice from a weather point of view today. From the chairs in our living room, the temps will be nice! Oh yeah, and here's how much I know about Football. The Super Bowl is in two weeks, I think. I am sure my 17 year old can give me the low down on when exactly the Super Bowl is. Which team are you cheering for?  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Spring Break 2013

OK~ Now is the time that many of us Northerner's begin to plan for Spring Break. Many of us venture to the beach, mountains, or even a fun city in the Mid-West. I've got some ideas that you may want to consider.

Florida is a destination that many people from the North love to experience. Florida offers sunshine, warm temperatures, beaches, ocean waves, tranquil waters, as well as amazing theme parks.
Universal Studios: Orlando
The Sunshine State does offer a lot for families, as well as retired people looking to get out of the cold. The Florida Keys offer a unique experience in itself. If you fly or drive into Miami International Airport, you will find the drive to Key West to be one filled with amazing scenery. Miles of bridges over turquoise colored water will simply wow you!

Key West, Florida

Colorado offers the mountains and many skiing opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. A tour through Rocky Mountain National Park, accompanied with your ski vacation makes for the ultimate Colorado Spring Break 2013 Experience. Estes Park offers week-end activities  that your family will all enjoy.

Rocky Mountain National Park
The candy shops in Estes Park are some of the finest you will find anywhere in the world. And if you are in the Estes Park area, I highly recommend you eat at Village Pizza, located at 543 Big Thompson Avenue. We have eaten there several times over the past few years and never had a bad meal here.

Chicago offers many fun activities for the whole family. From the Science and Industry Museum to the Field Museum, there are activities to keep everyone happy. Here's a great list of Free General Admission days to several museums in the Chicago area. Out of state residents do not always qualify for the free or reduced admission days, but it sure does not hurt to inquire. The museums themselves are well worth the entrance fees, as they offer many amazing exhibits.
Willis Tower: Sky Deck
Now, if you have teenage daughters, "The Magnificent Mile" is a must! The shopping, dining, and entertainment here is simply amazing! Oh yeah, and if you happen to be in Chicago around St. Patricks day, you may find a green river flowing through town.

Kings Pointe: A Waterpark Resort located in Storm Lake, Iowa, is offering several specials this Spring. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with the latest happenings. Conveniently located a few hours from Omaha, Minneapolis, Des Moines, and Sioux Falls.

Kings Pointe: A Waterpark Resort

You can even book your get-a-way at Kings Pointe right off of Facebook. Pretty cool, huh?

These are just three ideas of what you and your family can experience during Spring Break 2013. The possibilities are endless. From the East Coast to the West Coast, there is a community that would love to have your family visit this Spring. If these three places don't interest you, check out Google, as Google knows everything, right? If Florida is your choice, you can also get more ideas through the Iowa to Florida Road Trip 2012. Spring Break also happens for Southerner's too- so go ahead, and plan your Spring Break 2013 today! I'd love to hear about your Spring Break plans, as I'm always open to a new adventure.

With a Senior in high school, this will be the last year that this Mom is looking at a typical "school" calendar when it comes time to planning a Spring Break Vacation. Wow- now that's a strange feeling! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The News Media And Time

OK~ I was cruising through the news channels today, and what was so interesting; is the fact that the same stories that were headlining yesterday were headlining today. I can honestly say that my brain is much healthier and happier when I am not watching a news channel.

My Dad spent the month of September in the hospital with several days on full life support and the ICU unit. He was discharged from the hospital the first week of October. One thing he said really struck me. He commented that nothing has really changed as he was watching a news channel. He commented, "We are still in Afghanistan, Syria is still a mess, and Congress is still arguing about nothing!" Now that makes a person think.

This should also be a wake up call to the news media. If a man can miss almost six full weeks of news and the stories are still the same, this should probably tell the news media that their message needs to change. I got to thinking about that statement- yep, I was actually thinking about that. I consider myself to be a news junky, but you know what; I am much happier when I am not watching the news channels.

Now we not only have the debt ceiling to debate, we now have gun control, and everyone knows the answers. There it is, no discussion. It is no longer OK to agree to disagree, so our news media will continue to share the same message day in and day out. Or, maybe the fact of the matter is, is that our day to day happenings do not change; we just anticipate that they should.

Our youngest son will graduate from high school this Spring. I wonder how different the news stories will be from now until then. He thinks the news will still be the same. Oh yeah, he chose an interesting topic (back in September) for his Senior presentation, gun control. With all of the happenings in our country, he chose a "hot" topic. Gun control through the eyes of a high school senior that enjoys trapshooting and hunts should be an interesting presentation. And who knows, maybe the news will change by then. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

New Year's Resolutions- How You Doing With Yours?

OK~ We are 14 days into 2013 and I am happy to report that I have had no problems sticking to my New Year's resolutions. Due to the fact that I never made any, I feel confident making the statement that I am keeping my New Year's resolutions.

Due to my parents needing a little more help than usual, I have not been able to hit the gym like I usually do. Once things settle down with my parents, I will be glad to get back to my regular visits to the YMCA. I can also say that I know my back will be grateful when I get back into my regular exercise routine.

As for now, I'm rolling with what life tosses my way. How do you deal with having to change up your regular exercise plans? Do you find it easy to get back into it? I often wonder when I see someone at the YMCA and then I don't see them again for a few months how they ease back into things.

Did you make any New Year's Resolutions? If so, how are they working for you? I'm thinking maybe I should have made one, two, or maybe three...... After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Life In Rural America - It's Really Not That Bad

OK~ I'm reading today that 16% of the population in the United States resides in Rural America. This is a reality check for me, as I sit here and glance out the blue skies and wide open spaces. I know that I take my views here of the Iowa countryside for granted; yet I often think it's too open.

Over the course of the last 10-15 years, several groves, homes, barns, and farm places have been demolished within a couple miles of my home. Most of these areas have been turned into farmland. With more people to feed, it makes sense for farmers to utilize the black dirt that Iowa is blessed with. So, I am now asking myself, "What is good about living in rural America?"

Well, as I said before the air is clean. I love traveling and seeking out an adventure now and then. I also love returning home. Home is where I know the air will be clean. Not always so when I am traveling. The cities are full of hustle and bustle, whereas, my little corner of the world that I call home; is very laid back.

Where I live, I can see for miles. Yep, the view that I often take for granted! Many people that reside in larger cities have a view of sky scrapers, concrete, and building after building. And once Spring rolls around- the Farmer's Markets are everywhere in Iowa. We are blessed to have communities and residents in Iowa that support our Farmer's Markets.

Rural America: Iowa

I also see how Rural America has changed over the past twenty years through the number of kids that currently reside in the mile that I grew up on. When I rode the school bus, a few years back, there were 14 kids on that mile- today there are three (my brother's youngest kids). That in itself, speaks in volumes as to how our landscape in Iowa has changed.

It's always interesting to me as I hear people talking about going to Trader Joe's, (went to one for the first time a month ago), Costco (never been),  Five Guys Hamburgers (tried them first time in Sept in St. Louis), Gander Mountain (never been), and then there's the Apple Store. The closest Apple Store is a couple hours away- but, it's a reason to take a road trip, right? I do wish that we could purchase more things locally that we often have to go online to order. I do think it is important to support local businesses.

And then there is traffic. I complain when I have to sit behind three cars at a stoplight in our local town. So, I guess living in Rural America is not all that bad. Tell me about your experiences about living in Rural America, I'd love to hear about them! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Word Called Organization

OK~ If you are like me, you try to be organized 99.9% of the time. I am stressing the word "try." With a New Year, we are hearing a lot about being organized. So, I am holding myself accountable to all of you. I will be organized in 2013!

Now, according to the expert organizers this means that all papers need to be filed, clothing needs to be folded, the refrigerator needs to be clean (throughout the year, not only on National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day), and all items currently without a home, need a home.

Wooooaahhh....Now that's a list! I think I will take this one step at a time. For the year of 2013, I will be MORE organized in 2013 than I was in 2012. This gives me a little bit of wiggle room, right?

2013 is gonna get busy in this house! A high school senior, a high school trapshooting season, and a bundle of social networking events. You know what? That sounds organized to me, so I'm gonna roll with it. I'd love to hear how you are going to stay organized in 2013!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Review And Giveaway: Protect-A-Bed: The AllerZip® Smooth Mattress Encasement

OK~ I recently had the opportunity to review the AllerZip® Smooth Mattress Encasement. With two dogs in the house, I welcomed the opportunity.

The Aller Zip® Smooth Mattress Protector

The AllerZip Mattress Protector's Patented BugLock®-three-sided zipper and AllerZip seal- gives you total protection against allergens (like dander, a concern for pet owners who sleep with furry family members), dust mites and bed bugs. The smooth surface is waterproof and stain proof, featuring Protect-A-Bed's innovative Miracle Membrane® with Total Heat Transference Formula. Liquids and stains stay out, yet the protector remains breathable and comfortable.

Protect-A-Bed has also developed a user friendly mattress pad. Once we stood the mattress up, yes, stood it up. We placed the opened mattress pad over our mattress and then zipped it up. Our dogs like to sleep on our beds, and the other cool thing about this mattress pad, it does not crinkle or sound like it is on the bed.
