Three Reasons Why You Should Be On Facebook

OK~ Let's face it, social media is changing how we all interact. I always find it fascinating when I see someone on Facebook that stated a few years ago, "I will never have a Facebook account!" You know, that word never is really a word none of us should ever, ever, ever use. It usually leads to an open mouth insert foot event for me!

Reason #1- Facebook is a fantastic way for families to stay connected. You can connect with each other, but you can also start a private Facebook group for your family. Family pictures, events, and conversation that would rather "bore" your Facebook friends can easily take place here!

Reason #2- Facebook can really be entertaining. I was stunned the other day when I took a glimpse at all of the Facebook game applications that are available- WOW!  I had no idea. So, if you like to be challenged with words, letters, farming, life in the casino, and just about anything else you can think of- You need a Facebook page! I am not a Facebook gamer, but I see this as an opportunity for those that enjoy that type of thing.

Reason #3- Facebook is a great way to re-connect with your hometown. There are many Facebook pages that have popped up which will take you down memory lane. For those that have left the area, it's a nice way to see how the town/community looks today; as opposed to how it looked when they moved away. Although some of those older historical photos are pretty cool!

I will stop with three reasons, I do believe I can come up with more than 20 reasons within a short period of time- that's a whole other post!

So, this leads me to wonder. Where will Facebook be in five years? My high school senior will probably be saying in 10 years, "Facebook was the big thing when I graduated!" Embrace Facebook- you will be glad you did. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Free Country Review: Men's Boulder Mid-Weight Jacket

OK~ I was recently introduced to  Free Country, a company that prides itself on a fine selection of outdoor wear. Have you heard of them? If you are a family that enjoys the outdoors like we do, you need to check this company out. The Men's Boulder Mid-Weight Jacket that I received is absolutely amazing!

Our 17 year old son is 6' 3" tall and has long arms. The cool thing about this jacket, the sleeves were long enough! The sizing was spot on. FCX Technology is the component of this jacket that makes it deliver an easy to wear style,  which is designed to deliver high performance. FCX is specially coated to be water and wind resistant. The lightweight exterior has been designed to keep the wearer warm and dry. I can attest that the fit is great and it is even machine washable!

The zipper functions great! I cannot begin to tell you how many jackets through the years that we have had from the get go, that do not function properly. Oh yeah, and the pockets; this jacket is designed for the person that likes to keep their technology with them. There are pockets inside and outside this coat- great for the travel enthusiast!

Free Country offers a nice selection of outdoor wear for Men, Women, Boys and Girls. Lightweight jackets, 3-in-1- system jackets, fleece and just about anything else you can imagine. The color selections are not overwhelming, but definitely offer some nice choices.

We are going into the high school trapshooting season here. This Men's Boulder Mid-Weight  jacket will provide ample protection from the winds and chilly air that Mother Nature will toss us during the season. If you have an active Boy Scout or Girl Scout in your household, Free Country can help you with your gear for your next adventure.

Stay connected with Free Country through Facebook, Pinterest, and You Tube. Solutions for your active outdoor family are at your fingertips- Go ahead and connect today! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*I did receive one jacket of review purposes. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

February 2013 Snow

OK~ Our Iowa Winter has been rather dry, so this fresh, fluffy white snowfall was welcomed!  We've had a lot of ice and below zero temps (my opinion). It was so nice to be able to walk outdoors and not be frozen in a few seconds. The views around our place this morning were rather nice, you agree?

Our dogs embraced the snow and really loved to fly around in it! For now, we wait for round #2, which is slated to arrive in a couple days. I could sure get used to snowfall like this.

Our 17 year old son has had is driver's license for a little more than a year. Today was the first day that he had to drive to school on snow packed roads. The other days have been ice or clear pavement. I do believe he realized that snow packed roads are much easier to navigate than ice. School was delayed 2 hours, and I am not sure if he was grateful for 4-wheel drive or not. Had he not had 4-wheel drive he would have never made it out of the yard! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Family Vacations Are Educational Experiences

OK~ Today I found myself in the middle of a chat on Twitter. Several tweets were being tossed around in regards to parents receiving truancy letters when it comes to children not attending school. These kids were on family vacations with their families, parents notified the school district; yet received truancy letters from their individual states.

My question is: Have we gone too far when it comes to not allowing our kids to experience life when they have an opportunity to do so?

Our boys never missed a lot of school due to travel; although they did miss a day here or there. Family vacations are remarkable memorable events and rank right up at the top in life experiences. I totally understand why many parents opt to home school their kids.

Chicago: A Great Place For Families To Visit

I have never "lied" to the attendance secretary at school in regards to our boys' absences from school. Problem being, I know many parents that openly admit  to doing this, and the rest of us suffer and receive truancy letters! The parents that are lying to the school secretary should be the ones punished, not families that are playing by the rules.

Family vacations are educational in the fact that kids learn how to interact with waiters, waitresses, service employees and learn that they may have to wait for a few things. Yes, this could include waiting in a long line at an amusement park. One may argue, "What can a child learn while waiting in line at an amusement park?"  Well, they learn awfully darn fast that they need to be patient, respectful, and wait their turn. In our schools today, kids are not always respectful (my boys can attest to this through all of the bullying they endured). I am amazed that my boys tolerated the bullying as well as they did. Funny thing- several of these bullies have landed themselves in jail for theft, forgery, and the like as of late.

Many families visit fantastic museums while on vacation. The architecture and history kids can experience while visiting a museum is priceless. Many museums offer extremely fun and educational experiences for our kids. Our Presidents also have many terrific museums filled with history that all family members can appreciate.

Science Museum Of Minnesota

A beach vacation can also be a very educational experience. There are shells, dolphins, whales, fish, and sea turtles to learn about. I do not know a lot about beaches, but I can tell you, there is a lot to experience and learn while on a beach. When it comes to our environment, a beach is the ideal opportunity for kids to see how litter impacts life on the beach.

The Atlantic Ocean: Florida Coast
So, I'm weighing in with my opinion that kids can vacation and learn! Family time is precious. I just wish our public schools would respect the fact that kids thrive when they can travel with Mom/Dad, Grandpa/Grandma and other family members. Just a couple more months for our family, with the public schools and family travel. Graduation can't come soon enough!

I will continue to advocate for families that travel with their kids. I "get" the value of family travel and believe every child that has an opportunity to travel with their family; should be able to without being punished. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Reasons To Smile

OK~ It has been a crazy, busy day here and I am reflecting on three things that made me smile today. The first one being Skipper- He seriously enjoys wearing Garrett's sweatshirt!

Skipper: Dressed For Smiles

It appears that our pets are what make me smile. Yep, Wally was just extremely curious today. I had to pull him away from the cat food tub in the barn - three times today- yes, THREE times!  He may turn into a cat at some point here!

Wally sporting one of our Sheltie's sweaters- Just a little small!

And the third reason to smile~ it's all about family. I have been blessed. I have some of the best family around! And that high school graduation is getting closer day by day. Bring on tomorrow~ it'll be another day of smiles! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Carnival Sensation Is On My Mind

OK~ This is the time of year that I am sooooo ready for Spring! The Winter storms seem to keep coming, more often now than they did in December. We seem to have rain and ice, not a lot of snow. Mr. Weatherman (as in the National Weather Service) says we may get a foot of snow on Thursday, we shall see.

My solution is to take a cruise. Yeah, I know, with all of the chaos of cruising in the news; I'm thinking Carnival Cruise lines will be rolling out the red carpet! My fellow travel blogger Linda offers great information for myself and many of you,; when it comes to cruising for the first time! I wonder how my notes will compare. She's got great tips from an Expert First Time Cruiser.

Port Canaveral: Disney Ship

I will say that Jessica of Suitcases and Sippy Cups also shared great information when it comes to medical care onboard a Carnival Cruise Line Ship. Looks like Carnival Cruise Line has covered all the necessities for what could pop up while on our cruise. Fingers crossed that our crew stays healthy!

I am so ready to go now- unfortunately, I've got a few weeks to wait! The Carnival Sensation looks to be a fun, relaxing ship. Our family vacation will be filled with memories and a welcome break from the cold of Winter.

My cats are even ready for a break from Winter. They have heat, food, and water. Yet, they hang out right at our front door awaiting to be stepped on. My advice to them- "Go catch a Mouse!"  Yep, I've even recently had a mouse in the house. Yet another reason to go cruising!

For now I will embrace Winter. In no time at all I will be complaining that it is too hot!  Can you relate? Oh yeah, time to maybe start assessing my summer clothing- that cruise cannot come soon enough. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

* My family and I have purchased our Carnival Cruise Tickets and paid for them.  I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

Reality Check - Yikes, It's Already February

OK~ Here we go! It's already Mid-February and this Mom needs to get serious about planning a high school graduation party. The date and location need to get nailed down soon. It's hard to believe that our youngest will graduate from high school in a few months.

I can recall the day that my boys were 4 and 8. In the back of my mind I was thinking,"Wow, they will be 8 and 12 someday down the road." Well, we passed those ages a long, long time ago.

Today is Valentine's Day and I can recall all of those classroom parties. There were many Valentine's, candy, and games in the busy classrooms. Now it's just another day for work and/or school. This is all a reality check, life goes fast people- get out and enjoy it!

An adventure over Spring Break and the beginning of a high school trapshooting season will kick off the final 2 1/2 months of the school year. I will be at a point in my life where the start and end dates of the school calendar year will no longer matter. I can kind of remember those days!

The calendar is telling me that February is almost 1/2 over, and the sunshine until about 5:45 p.m., is telling me that Spring is actually coming. Surprisingly, I have birds chirping in my yard this morning. Do you think they are a little confused? Yesterday this pond in the yard served up one big mud party for our dogs and 17 year old son- you gotta love Winter in Iowa!

Iced Yard: February 2013

Two muddy dogs, a 17 year old's muddy boots- life is good! Now to embrace the rest of the school year and focus on the future. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It Is Time To Leave Winter Behind and Cruise With Carnival Cruise Lines

OK~ February is the time of year when I'm ready to get out of the North Country and head South. Unfortunately, I won't be able to head South until March. I'm gearing up for a vacation on Carnival Cruise Lines, you ever been? I'm totally new to cruising and excited to experience the fun that Carnival Cruise Lines has to offer. We've had a week of no sunshine here in North Iowa, so I'm finding my own sunshine today through Carnival Cruise Line! This sure looks enticing, I'm finding a lot to share with you.

We will be cruising on the Carnival Sensation that cruises from Port Canaveral  and through the Bahamas. Travel with Bender offers insight on what the Carnival Sensation  has to offer and more. Our cruise looks to be a fun filled family adventure! Just what I thought, there does not seem to be a lack of activity for kids of all ages.

One Of The Happy Residents Of Port Canaveral

While I'm cruising for more great information on cruising with Carnival, I'm reminded that there is no shortage of kids activities. Travel Mamas offers great insight when it comes to cruising with kids on Carnival Cruise Line. From the arcade, teddy bear workshops, to lots of water activities; there looks to be a variety of activities to keep kids busy.

It looks like Carnival Cruise Line offers a great spa opportunity for those looking for the ultimate spa experience. Travel writer Karon Warren shares her spa experience aboard the Carnival Fantasy when it comes to all you need to know about the spa experience while cruising with Carnival Cruise Line. If a spa is on your radar while cruising, it looks like this should be booked a few weeks in advance. Spas look to be very popular when it comes to cruising.

My dreary, rainy day in Iowa today is turning into a day dreamer's paradise. I'm finding a lot to share when it comes to cruising with Carnival Cruise Line. FamilyTravel offers 11 Reasons To Cruise! Seriously, they had me with Reason #1.  These are 11 amazing reasons to cruise- makes me want to cruise now!

I love how Jessica with Suitcases and Sippy Cups shares how cruising is a great opportunity to do things that you normally would not do! Jessica and her family cruised on the Carnival Magic and are now believers that cruising is the perfect family vacation! Jessica is making a believer out of this Mom. As I sit and look at the ice outside my window, I want to cruise now.

We depart from Port Canaveral. We are staying at Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe the night before we cruise and the night after we cruise. The cool thing about this- we don't have to pay for parking at the port. Stay tuned......I've got much more to share on Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe in 2013! We'll be sharing our trek over to the Port- and I might add, it's a short one! Ron Jon Resort: Cape Caribe is the ideal place to stay before and after you cruise out of Port Canaveral. Pssttt.... There's A Holiday Coming!

OK~ There is a holiday next week! Yes, really. A holiday is gonna happen on February 14th. When my boys were younger this was a day that we looked forward to. There was candy to be bought, cards to be signed, enveloped to be addressed, and it was time to gear up for those classroom Valentine's parties.

This year Thursday, February 14th is just that, February 14th. My how time changes things. There is no longer the chaos of getting ready for that classroom party- I will admit they were fun parties. I often helped with the classroom parties and it was fun to see the kids open their Valentine cards.

I have purchased a couple Valentine cards and will mail them- yes, actually stamped and mailed! February 14th will be that, February 14th! How will you celebrate Valentine's Day? Pretty much a normal day here- work, school, and a home cooked meal! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Skilled Care And Caring For Aging Parents- Uggghhh!

OK~ I have had a few months to reflect upon the care my Dad has received while recovering from necrotizing pancreatitis. His journey has been an amazing one. Our family has been blessed with great medical care from St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. After spending 25 days in the ICU Unit and 10 more days in the hospital, he was slated to be discharged to a nursing home before being released to come home. Here is where the problems began.

Today I was reading the saga of my friend Cecily of Uppercase Woman. She is currently Banging Her Head Against The Caregiver Wall. Most people would not believe that this is actually occurring in our world today. Well, I am here to tell you that I can relate!

My Mom and I met with a representative of a nursing home three days before dad was going to be discharged to a nursing home to receive "skilled care." Our family had researched the facilities in our area and found that they all classified themselves as "skilled care" facilities. So when we met with this representative she assured us that there "skilled care" facility would be able to take care of Dad. She had examined his medical records and she was sure they were qualified to take him. All we needed were the papers finalized and Dad would be about 12 miles from home. Our goal was to get him closer to home, so Mom would be able to visit on a daily basis and not have to stay in a hotel to see him.

The day before he was to be discharged my parents were notified that Dad would need to go to Nursing Home A or B. The nursing home that he was slated to go to would not be able to meet his needs. We had two choices, one nursing home in town (about 10 miles away) or one 90 miles to the East. Well, that was a no brainer, of course we would opt for the one near home.

Here's where my problem lies. Why do nursing homes consider themselves to be "skilled care" facilities when they do not know how to care for patients with drain tubes and incisions that are healing from the inside out? Yep, my Dad had these issues. In my opinion, if a nursing home can call themselves a "skilled care" facility, they should be able to meet the needs of patients that need skilled care. We later learned that the "skilled care" facility that Mom and I had met with did not have the means to care for patients with drain tubes. We are assuming that meant trained staff to care for him.

Dad did receive very good care while in the nursing home. Yes, it did take sometime to educate the nursing staff on how to flush his drain tube and change the dressing on his open wound. 10 days into his stay, the nursing staff had learned how to take care of him.

What on earth happens to patients that do not have their minds to show the nursing staff how to care for them? Do nurses not have to change dressings or take care of drain tubes in nursing homes? I cannot imagine that my Dad was the first resident that has had these needs. Or, do most people in his condition just get sent home to die? These are all questions that continually race through my mind.

I am grateful that Dad had a knowledgeable surgeon and a team of Doctors that literally saved his life. The journey out of the hospital has been an interesting one. Dad has his mind and is in recovery mode. Dad will tell you, "If you are heading to the hospital. Sleep with one eye open!" When you hear someone say that you need an advocate while in the hospital, he will tell you that is very true.

It's time to stop misleading the public and stop labeling nursing homes "skilled care" facilities when they are not. Maybe it's something that Medicare mandates that each nursing home calls themselves or it's fake advertising. Whatever it is---- it's time to stop labeling nursing homes "skilled care" facilities when they won't offer the skilled care that the elderly needs. A broken system that seems to care about the almighty dollar and not the person.

So........ hopefully this will help another family that finds themselves on the adventure we found ourselves on. Sadly it appears that there are many, many other families dealing with this same type of issue. When crisis mode strikes, families need to be assisted and given the tools to help them care for their loved ones. The elderly people in our country have worked hard all their lives and deserve to be treated with respect. They are not a piece of paper that needs to be thrown away.

Ahhhh- The aging parent thing! I'm here, living it and am blessed to be able to share in the ups and downs as Dad recovers. It saddens me that money means more than human beings when it comes to dealing with Medicare. I can only imagine what this will be like for my boys when they are dealing with me- yikes! AARP- You Can Stop Mailing Me Your Stuff

OK~ I have been receiving AARP information in the mail for more than six years. I finally took a little deeper look into what it takes to belong. One of my Facebook friends had posted that she had just turned 50 and asked others what the benefits were to joining. One comment caught my attention, "Why not?" Well, I thought about that and decided to dive into joining AARP.

I quickly took a tour of the website and was intrigued when I saw that Walgreen's has teamed up with AARP. Since I shop at Walgreen's and use their saver's card, all I would have to do is link my AARP membership to my Walgreen's card. Well, that sounded pretty easy.

Upon further review, I noticed that I had a major glitch in front of me. Did you know that you have to be 50 to be a member of AARP?  Much to my dismay and six years of wasted mailings, I now know that I will NOT become an AARP member when I reach the age of 50! Why would I want to pay money to belong to an organization that has mislead me for six years and wasted a lot of money on all of these mailings?

Someone enlighten me. If the money for joining AARP went for something good, I might consider. But seriously, six years of mailings and finally getting this Mom to finally dive into joining, to learn 50 is the magic age, not 40.  How much money is spent on mailing the under 50 crowd AARP mailings? I'm guessing it's a lot.

Maybe in 3 1/2 years I will look at this from a different point of view. For now, I will focus on my 40's and celebrating my high school senior's graduation. I will focus on embracing the feeling of not having to know when school starts in August and when those school vacations are. Wow, that will be a different feeling!

If you are an AARP member, I'd love to know what the benefits are. And seriously, AARP, save your money and mail your stuff to people that can actually use your services. Or better yet, send my name and address on to an organization that offers services that this 40 something Mom could benefit from. After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Udderly Smooth Review And Giveaway

OK~ Udderly Smooth is sure to take care of your dry, nagging skin. Udderly Smooth was originally developed by a pharmacist, Bill Kennedy Sr., more than 30 years ago in America's heartland. Udderly Smooth was developed to soothe and soften the udders of cows. It wasn't long after that many folks realized that this amazing product mooved right on into homes from coast to coast.

The good folks over at Udderly Smooth sent me a 12 oz. container of Udderly Smooth Body Cream, an 8 oz. Udderly Smooth container of Shea Butter Foot Cream, and a 4 oz. tube of Udder Cream for review purposes. My dry, cracked Winter skin welcomed these products. I deal with psoriasis on a year round basis, and I must say that the Udderly Smooth Body Cream was very soothing to my dry, cracked elbows.
Udderly Smooth Cream

The Udderly Smooth Creams do have a light scent. The scent is not heavy, therefore; the boys in this house will have no problems using this. I also noticed that Udderly Smooth Cream did not leave a greasy feeling on my skin. My skin was softened, yet my hands were left soft and smooth after applying this lotion to my elbows and feet.

So, if your skin is in need of a dose of moisture this Winter, I would recommend you invest in Udderly Smooth creams. The other cool thing, these creams are not overly expensive. The Udderly Smooth 12 Oz. Body Cream has an average retail value of $4.99! Yes, you read that correct! The 8 Oz. Shea Butter Foot Cream also has an average retail value of $4.99. And the 4 Oz. Udder Cream, which comes in a handy tube, retails for an average of $2.99! Yes, very affordable when your skin is needing a drink of two.

You can find Udderly Smooth Creams all across the United States. Drug stores, such as Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Dollar General, Walgreens (one of my favorite places to shop) and Ace Hardware. Hopefully one of these stores is located in your neighborhood.

Or better yet, fill out the Rafflecopter form below and you may find yourself winning a set of what Udderly Smooth sent me to use. Yep, someone will win a 12 Oz. Udderly Smooth Body Cream, an 8 Oz. container of Shea Butter Cream, and a 4 Oz tube of Udder Cream! Go ahead and enter! I really do love this lotion and I hope you experience the same results that we did in our house. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A huge thank you to Udderly Smooth for sending me some awesome products to try and for giving one of my readers a set of Udderly Smooth Creams just like I received!

*I received product for review purposes. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

If You Don't Think 22 Years Goes By Quickly, Think Again

OK~ Our oldest son is 22 years old today. In that period of time we have experienced a lot! So, I find myself asking myself, "Where did those 22 years go?'

Well, let's start with school. There were 14 years (Pre-School Included) that were spent at school activities. There were new teachers to meet, homework assignments to complete (at all hours of the night), music concerts to attend, orchestra concerts to attend, art shows to attend, and of course numerous school conferences to go to.

Backing up a little, there was the major hurdle of learning how to sleep through the night. Luckily he conquered this in a few weeks. Then it was on to learning how to eat solid foods. And then, at 9 months, look out- he was hitting the pavement.; walking and running full speed ahead. The teeth came in, and of course, we lost teeth due to falls and all sorts of fun stuff.

Thinking back to that first day of Kindergarten, what a memory. I was patiently waiting for the school bus to come and it came and drove right by me. Our oldest son just stared out the window at me and waved. The bus driver saw a Mother in panic mode and stopped the bus.  I approached the bus driver who had labeled me a crazy Mother, as I was insisting that my child get off the bus when the bus driver had papers that said our son was to go to daycare, really? Guess what? The bus driver let him off.  Welcome to the next 13 years of chaos in the public school system.

Lots of fun birthday parties with our immediate family, extended family and Grandpa's and Grandma's. Our boys were fortunate to have three Great Grandmother's in their lives when they were young. Sadly they all passed away within a short period of time of each other.

Family vacations- Florida, Colorado, Texas, Michigan, Montana, Wisconsin- lots of states traveled and many fond memories! Biking, Hiking, Fishing, Theme Parks, to Camping-We crammed in a lot! And of course there were many summer days spent boating out on the local lake in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Riding a bicycle and being pulled by the family Sheltie on roller blades are two of our 22 year old son's memories of his childhood days.

High school graduation arrives and then it's off to the work force and before you know it- 22 years are history! So........I'm now sitting here thinking- What will my life be like over the course of the next 22 years? Wow- now that's a thought- I'm up to dreaming! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
