Sweet Relish: Solution For Graduation Gifts 2013

My oldest daughter, Katherine, came bounding down the stairs yesterday, phone in hand (per usual), barely glancing up as she grabbed a soda from the fridge. Like Sara’s son, she is graduating high school this year, excited to be headed to Chapel Hill in the fall, but for one moment I saw not the eighteen-year-old beauty, but the five-year-old she was so many years ago. It was very much like the commercial where the daughter keeps trying to grab the car keys from her dad and he pictures her as a kindergartner.
How did we get here, I wondered. How is this possible? In my mind, I still see her at her preschool graduation, wearing a little red dress and walking up the aisle of the church, excited to accept her first diploma. I didn’t cry then, managed to hold it together. But later, they showed a video of the kids, different pictures taken throughout the year, set to the music of Crosby, Stills and Nash’s Teach Your Children. There was Katherine, painting at an easel. Sitting atop the jungle gym. With arms around her friends. There, in the darkened room, I let tears quietly stream down my face.
Now, as she heads into the finale of her senior year, I find myself going back and replaying the scenes of her life like a movie reel. Her boogey-boarding for the first time on our annual Outer Banks beach trip and crossing the finish line at one of her many 5K races. Baking cookies together in the kitchen or watching her head out with her best friends, girls she has known since kindergarten.
There are other scenes that don’t play out as well. Missed curfews and salty language and disagreements and full-fledged fights. Just as I get sentimental, one of her sour moods snaps me back to reality. It is not always cotton candy and rainbows-sometimes there are storms. I feel that we’ve weathered them and become stronger, but it certainly wasn’t easy.
She is enjoying this last bit of her childhood, and part of me wants her to hold on to these carefree days forever. Because I write for Sweet Relish, I’ve begun putting together a “graduation box” for her. Some are things I know she’ll need at college- a cute shower caddy, a personalized laundry bag, an eco-friendly charger. Others I hope will spark a memory or provide her some comfort- a beautiful Tiffany compass so she’ll never get lost, a customized photo vase, and her favorite childhood book, which is fittingly, Oh the Places You’ll Go.
Quoting Dr. Seuss, I know that she’s off to Great Places, and her mountain is waiting. It is what will make these last months with her all the sweeter.
Victoria is a North Carolina mother of three who is excited her oldest daughter will be a Tar Heel- even if she is a Blue Devil herself. When not driving car pool or attending sporting events, she writes for Sweet Relish, the coolest site on the web.

Hopping down The Bunny Trail With Hershey's

*Disclosure: I did receive an Easter Basket from Hershey's to facilitate this review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

OK~ Easter is coming and it's going to be here very soon! Hershey's is ready to offer you all the candy you need.

Your Easter basket can be one filled with tasty memories. One of my fondest memories of Easter is when my boys were younger. They are now 17 and 22, so getting dressed up for Easter is not on their agenda. I can recall shopping for matching outfits, yep- I was that Mom! Those pictures are filled with smiles, memories and fun times that can never be removed from our lives. 9 times out of 10, it always seemed that it was chilly on Easter Sunday and the clothing that I had purchased was for much warmer weather. I do believe that is how this year will be for those trying to dress their kiddos for the Easter Holiday.

Hershey's offers solutions for your Easter Basket needs. The ideas are abundant and your Easter will be one you and your kids will remember. Fill your basket with Hershey's Kisses, Cadbury Mini Eggs,  Hershey's Cookies And Creams Bunnies, and many more fun items!

I'd love to hear about your favorite Easter memories, leave me a comment! If you need a little more inspiration, here ya go! Hershey's sent me this fun basket filled with loads of goodies.

Happy Easter and I hope you and your family have fun hopping down the bunny trail with Hershey's. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Welcome Home Mom- Really?

OK~ I leave town and life is good when I come home and my house is standing. There is something about coming home and within an hour things are totally chaotic! So.... I reach into the drawer to find a spoon and much to my dismay, here ya go!

I am thankful that the dishwasher was empty and had two dirty dishes in it- that's awesome! When I left a full load of clean dishes was in it. There is hope- my boys (dogs included) are great when it comes to fending for themselves.

Everything else looks better than it did when I left. I kid you not, I was not home more than two hours and this occurred!

I guess Skipper and Wally decided that I needed a real welcome home, Mom! Yep, all the packaging from everything consumed while I was away was to be found here.

It is always fun to hit the road and explore new places. There's something about coming home to the flat lands of Iowa, being able to see for miles and all of that wide open blue sky! When I stepped outside this morning the birds were chirping, the snow was beginning to melt and there is a scent of Spring in the air. I know that may sound strange, but that's how it is in Iowa. You can literally smell the change of the seasons when you step outside.

I am looking forward to the changes that come with Spring arriving. I am really, really hoping our apple tree buds do not get frozen off again. Last Spring all of our apples got zapped in an April freeze. We had zero apples last Fall. I also look forward to the scent and view that my lilac bushes provide, my fingers are crossed that they will not get frozen off like the apple buds did last year.

All in all, it's good to be home. I am reminded that life is good when chaos is around. The messy drawer and garbage all over remind me that my life is fun and we are living our life! Life is all about experiences and this Mom is embracing all of them. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Good People You Meet While Traveling

OK~ I am here to tell you that there are still some very nice people in our world today. While on our vacation, we were driving through Valdosta, Georgia, we had a little car problem. The water pump went out. Thankfully, it did not go out while driving through the traffic in Atlanta.

We pulled into a Burger King parking lot. My hubby accessed the situation and knew that we needed a new belt and a water pump. I went into Burger King and found a lady sitting at a table and asked her if she knew where the closest Toyota dealer was. She said it was a couple exits down the road. I then went out to tell my hubby that there was one nearby. We quickly searched it on our cell phone and found it. A phone call confirmed that they had the parts we needed. The next problem, how to get there?

I marched back into Burger King and explained our situation to this lady I had talked to a few minutes earlier. Her Mother joined the conversation and explained that they do not give rides to strangers. I thought, "OK, I get that." I then said, "I will figure something else out, thank you."

I was not outside maybe two minutes and she said, "Ma´m, I can give you a ride. You look like nice folks." Huge sigh of relief! So, I hopped in a car in Valdosta, Georgia- total strangers. I quickly learned her name was Lizzie, she had several children and grandkids. The water pump in her car had went out a few weeks earlier. Would you be willing to accept a ride with a stranger, or offer a ride to a stranger?

Lizzie patiently waited for me when I went into the Toyota dealership to get our parts. I might also add that the Toyota dealership in Valdosta, Georgia, provided us with top notch service! 10 minutes later, I had the parts in tow. So, back to the Burger King parking lot.

Within two hours, we were back on the road! I am grateful that my hubby was able to change out the water pump. We had just the right amount of tools along- Note to self: Next time make sure we have a few more tools packed. We had the bare minimum to get the job done.

Lizzie helped make the start of our vacation a happy one! If you don't think there are still good people in this world, I'm hear to tell you, the folks in Southern Georgia were some of the nicest people I have ever met! Lizzie..........Thank You!

Oh yeah, I'm thinking Garrett got an education on what to do and what not do while changing out a water pump while in a parking lot! Interesting experience, that is for sure! Maybe this Mom would make a good contestant on the Amazing Race, you think so? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Please Tell Me We Are Not The Only Family That Still Travels With One Of These

OK~ Call us old fashioned, what ever you want. Yes,we still travel with one of these in the car. Let's just say those crazy GPS systems have taken us on some pretty wild goose chases, so I always like it when I have an actual map in the car!

The cool thing about this one, is that it is current, it's not one from 2003! I'd love to hear your take on this. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Which Route Would Your 17 Year Old Son Take To School?

OK~ What road do you think a 17 year old boy would take to get to school?

You got it, of course he chose B! Thankfully this Mom did not get a phone call to come dig him out with a tractor. Gotta love Winter in Iowa.  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Signs That Winter Is Hanging On

OK~ Winter is hanging on this year. December and January were very dry and cold! March comes in like a lamb and bam.... Two snow storms in Iowa by March 4th and it's all white outdoors. I made three observations today and am curious if you agree with me or not.

My first observation is the fact that it appears the teen drivers are just getting the hang of driving on the ice and snow. They seem to be driving a little slower and smarter!

My second observation- it was quiet today at the local coffee shop. Maybe the snow kept people indoors. Do you venture out when it snows or hibernate?

My third observation was the fact that I made a trip into Target and Wal-Mart, yep, within 15 minutes of each other. Both stores had stacks of boxes in the aisles and stockers re-stocking the shelves. When the weatherman mentions the word snow, it is a fact; people run to the grocery store! Do you fall into that category?

Are you hunkered down for another round of snow this coming week-end in the Mid-West? Maybe, just maybe it will go around us. But wait, we need the moisture! This is really a no win situation- for now, embrace it! Winter is still here and Mother Nature is gonna be sure we experience all that she has to offer. Oh yeah, and what about that Groundhog, he lied!  After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Time To Shop For Sandals

OK~ I hate to confess, but all of you can be glad that I do not have a picture of two pair of my sandals that hit the trash today. I dug them out and found them in shambles.

I quite honestly cannot believe that I wore them all last Summer. My black pair had a hole under the ball of my foot- yep, a hole!  The soles of my brown pair were coming off- I had super glued them a few too many times. There were strings hanging out of them. I looked at my hubby and said, "Don't you think I can glue them?" His look was priceless! To the trash they both went.

I feel guilty that I have tossed my favorite pairs of sandals into the trash. I now have no sandals. And remember, I leave on that Carnival Cruise soon! The pressure is on- I need to find a pair of black sandals in a size 11. They cannot have spiked heels, which quickly narrows my selection, and they have to be comfy! Not a pair to be found in town today. And, of course, we have a raging snowstorm brewing.

Lesson learned- take inventory of summer clothing at least a month before you need it! Wish me luck- this is gonna be one fun adventure! On a brighter note, we were able to locate our youngest son's dress pants and dress shoes- they are in great shape and the fit! is good. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Miracles Do Happen!

OK~ Many of you have been following the journey our family has been on since August 27, 2012. If you have not, let me bring you up to speed. My Dad was diagnosed with necrotizing pancreatitis on August 27, 2012. He was seen in our local emergency room and was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dad And I- March 1, 2013

He spent 20+ days in the ICU unit and was released from the hospital to a local nursing home on October 1, 2012. He spent 30 days recuperating to get ready to move back home with Mom. The fact that he was hooked up to more than 30 tubes/machines, a 24/7 dialysis machine, ventilator for 10+ days, and he is alive today is a miracle!

We had many dark days. It was very difficult to watch Dad's body work so hard to maintain to stay alive. I, quite honestly, had no idea that a body could work so hard and come out of it alive. I do think many Dr.'s and Nurses feel the same way, as many in that ICU unit had never seen a body pull through like Dad's did. Dad is a Miracle Man!

Dad's had a few bumps in the road. He was hospitalized right after Christmas with a staph infection, and thankfully he has Doctors that have found procedures which his body responds to. Fast forward- A fantastic report from Dad's surgeon yesterday- for the first time in six months, he has no inflammation in his pancreas! Dad had a drain tube from his pancreas since August 27th- and YES, it was removed yesterday- Dad was so relieved, as we were!

Folks, our God is Good! Miracles do happen and my family is here to tell you- Do NOT give up on faith- your faith will get you through the dark times. Our friends and family have supported us in ways we never imagined- THANK YOU!

Oh yeah, and if you have gallstones, do not take them lightly. Dad had one gallstone that traveled into a pancreatic duct and caused all these problems.

So now- Grandpa is getting ready to go on a cruise with the Grandkids- how cool is that? The memories and laughs will be cherished by all of us. I think this is just one way that God has reminded our family to not take things for granted. Seems like we all need that little wake up call once in a while. Do you have a Miracle Man in your household? If so, I'd love to hear about him or her. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
