Black Friday and Gray Thursday Are Changing How We Celebrate Thanksgiving

OK~ I am reflecting on this day we have come to know as Black Friday. Yes, some of my family members did hit Best Buy last evening at 6:00 p.m. to snag a buy! And today, they were back at Best Buy to snag another buy. We are a family of techies, so this makes a little sense to me. Did I personally hit any stores for a "deal" this year? Nope, not interested. I, unfortunately, had to make a visit to the grocery store, as those needs continue 365 days of the year.

With all of our needs and wants in society today, will Thanksgiving ever be a holiday where it's strictly a day of Thanksgiving? I honestly don't think so. With our challenging economy, let's face it, we all are on the hunt for the best deals every single day of the year.

What's so intriguing to me is that so many families have made Black Friday, or it may now be Gray Thursday, a family tradition, there is simply no going back. Shopping on Black Friday was not a tradition that I grew up with, so it has never really interested me. Will Thanksgiving remain a paid holiday for many or will that vanish? Will there be a need for a holiday called Thanksgiving? The calendar says yes, but when I think about it, maybe a traditional day of Thanksgiving will go by the wayside. Families are forced to get together when their jobs and time tables say they can, not the calendar.

Families are much more spread out,  people are working to stay ahead of their bills, and that "one" special day doesn't seem to have the meaning for many that it once had. When I was growing up, I can recall Memorial Day being a day that was really set aside for visiting a cemetery. Today it's more about the family picnic, a day off from work/school, a day at the beach, which is not the reason Memorial Day is what it is. Am I the only person seeing a pattern here?

So, back to Thanksgiving Day. I enjoy Thanksgiving and am fortunate to have immediate family with current jobs that allow them to have Thanksgiving off. Now, with 18 and 22 year old sons, sometime in the future that may change. I can roll with that and can honestly say that their schedules will dictate when our family celebrates Thanksgiving. Maybe there is something to be said about Black Friday changing how we celebrate Thanksgiving. This is the year 2013, not the year 1972!

Most importantly, we all need to remember that we have so much to be thankful for. And it's not just about showing gratitude one day out of the year, it's showing gratitude 365 days of the year. Did you hit the stores on Black Friday or Gray Thursday? If so, I'd love to hear about it. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

PUR Gum Review: Go Ahead, Chew That Healthy Gum!

Disclosure: I did receive four flavors of PUR Gum to review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post and the opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

OK~ Did you know that 3.74 trillion number of pieces of chewing gum are made each year? All I can say is, "Wow!" Now that is an amazing statistic. It's no secret that I am not a big gum chewer. But, when I was given the opportunity to try Pur Gum, I said, "Sure!" I can honestly say I was glad I agreed to experience it. It was what I expected, but I can honestly say the flavor was very good!

Here's a few facts about PUR Gum.

  • #1 selling aspartame-free gum in North America
  • Safe for pregnant women and children of any age
  • Naturally sweet and free of chemicals and artificial sweeteners, such as asparteme
  • Uses Xylitol, which promotes oral health, preventing tooth decay and cavities
  • Certifies all of it's ingredients to give comfort for those with specialty diets including vegans, gluten-free, non-gmo, nut-free, celiac and diabetic friendly and dairy free
The flavor lasted about as long as I expected, as with any chewing gum. Wintergreen, Peppermint, Spearmint, and Pomegranate Mint all had excellent flavor. My favorite Pur Gum flavor is the Pomegranate Mint. It's sweet and has just the right amount of flavor.

To stay up to date on what's happening with PUR Gum, connect on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram to stay in the know.

So, the next time you are needing to fulfill the urge to burn 11 calories per hour, reach for a piece of gluten-free PUR Gum. I think you will be pleasantly surprised, as I know I was. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Solving The World's Problems In A Hospital Waiting Room

OK~ I have spent today in a hospital waiting room and my siblings, along with my Mom and I, have solved all the world's problems. We have discussed everything from healthcare reform, Common Core Math, to weight loss.

Our conclusions: Healthcare reform has created more issues than healthcare had before this program was implemented. Really? A website that does not take payments when it is a "mandatory program." One thing I learned while discussing this issue.

Common Core Math is OK. Now, granted I do not have kids in school anymore and my sister's son is a Freshman, I see the frustrations that many of my friends have with this Math. After discussion amongst us, we have determined that Math, to us, is all about problem solving. My brother has a first grader and his first grader has no issues with problem solving.

Weight loss is challenging. Would someone explain why a man can lose 15 lbs. and a woman can lose zippo? Same diet, same exercise regime, and same home environment! Ummmm..... could I really be that lazy?

And now we are watching Dr. Oz. He seems to have all the answers to losing weight! But dang, can I eat anything I like, Dr. Oz? I want to eat an occasional slice of cake, is that OK? Not sure!

Oh yeah, and we even managed to set a date for our extended family Christmas! So, family togetherness in a hospital waiting room can really be a good thing.

So....... It's now up to us to solve more problems. Hospital waiting rooms can be crazy places. We have been here for 12 hours and counting! After All It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

U.S.Cellular Offers Online Shopping Tips For Black Friday

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

OK~ Did you know that according to Mobile Commerce Daily, on Black Friday last year alone, mobile shopping accounted for 16 percent of online sales and that number is expected to exceed 20 percent this year? A recent U.S. Cellular survey showed that 39% of our smart phone customers use their smart phones for shopping. I am part of that 39%, as I use my smart phone a lot when it comes to shopping!

I am not the type of person who enjoys going out and battling the crowds on the day after Thanksgiving, so the Black Friday App is appealing to me. This free app is the ultimate Black Friday survival guide, enabling users to browse "leaked" and verified ads. It also allows users to price compare against the best online prices or find a store's nearby locations with a tap. Using this app saves time and helps determine where to get the lowest price. I can tell you that our family loves Amazon and we are always comparing prices, and a lot of stores will price match with Amazon.

Need a little help with that Christmas shopping for the tech lover in your family? U.S. Cellular has some of the hottest tech gifts this shopping season. The iPhone 5s, the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, and iPhone 5c, the most colorful iPhone yet, is available now!

Enjoy Black Friday, keep your smart phone in hand and enjoy shopping from the coziness of your couch! I appreciate the fact that my smart phone has made shopping all year long, a breeze!

An app that I use a lot is the Amazon Mobile one, as it is very user friendly. You can zip through your shopping from home on your smart phone and tablet, which allows you more time to spend with your family. The holidays bring lots of home cooked meals, school music programs, and Christmas caroling.

When you utilize your smart phone, you can enjoy the things that matter the most to you this holiday season. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Thanksgiving Should Be A Day Of Thanksgiving

OK~ I'm seeing my newsfeed on Facebook is filled with Black Friday deals and Thursday Thanksgiving deals. Thanksgiving, in my opinion, should be a day of thankfulness, not about the almighty dollar. Thanksgiving should be a day of Thanksgiving, not a day of shopping. Thanksgiving should be a day of family and sharing! Just like these two cousins.

I worked retail for 10 years and let me tell you, the friday after Thanksgiving was chaotic and exhausting. And yes, when I signed up to work retail, I also understood that this was part of the deal! If I wanted to get paid, I had to show up when I was scheduled and give it my all. I am sure many folks that work in the medical and police fields also understand that working holidays is just part of the job. I wonder how this shopping on Thanksgiving Day will impact Black Friday. That remains to be seen. Maybe Black Friday will become a thing of the past.

Fast forward another 10 years and MANY stores are now open on Thanksgiving Day. I can recall a day almost 20 years ago when a co-worked said, "In our time, stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day." At the time I thought it would never happen. Well, it has happened.

What happened to a day where families can focus on what they are thankful for? I am thinking I enjoyed life when things were simple. Thanksgiving was a time when we had an extended family gathering and there were years when the WHOLE family got stranded at our home due to blizzards! Those were great memories that will never be taken away from me. Do families still get together like that on Thanksgiving?

Our family gathering will be just the four of us and I have no desire to go shopping on Thanksgiving. Shopping is chaotic and noisy. I'll take a day of family board games and good food over the battle of the crowds at the stores! I'm assuming the stores will be crowded, or there would be no reason for stores to be open these wild hours. Maybe I am just a grouchy old lady and need to get out and shop. For what? I honestly do not need anything so badly that I feel the need to shop on Thanksgiving.

How will you spend Thanksgiving? Will you be out shopping for that perfect gift? I'd love to hear how you will spend your holiday. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have a great time and love every moment of it! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Price Parents Of Teens Pay For Taking A Vacation

OK~ That homecoming I wrote about a week ago happened! And it was kind of like I thought it would be. Anytime an 18 year old is left home alone for a couple weeks, one has to wonder. He had work, school, and helped out with harvest, so he was one busy body. It's quite obvious that he was not busy doing dishes, but he was busy cooking and eating!

I do not proclaim to keep a super clean house. I can tell you that when we left on our two week vacation there were no dishes on the counter, the sink was empty and the dishwasher was 1/2 full of dirty dishes. I am not sure what we "thought" things would look like when we returned home, but I can tell you that this is somewhat what we had anticipated.

It appears that McDonald's, Subway and Coca-Cola fared quite well while we were out of town. It was reassuring to know that he did drink a gallon of milk and even ventured to the grocery store to buy another one. There were empty Chef Boyardee Ravioli cans, as well- proof that he can actually cook! I know, it's not really cooking, but to an 18 year old boy, that is cooking!

My kitchen is somewhat back in order and life is returning to normal, if there is such a thing. When it comes to normal, our home is filled with craziness and interesting happenings!

Now, if someone would tell our five farm cats to catch the mice that have found their way into our house, I would be one happy Mom! Each Fall we have that issue- mice love old farm houses and ours is no exception.

We are home, finding our new normal and enjoying what life has to toss our way. Lord only knows, with two dogs, an 18 year old in the house; and the holidays around the corner- we are going to be busy, busy, busy, which is how this Mom likes it. How do you find your normal each day, I'd love to hear about it! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Mama Is On Her Way Home And She's Bracing Herself

OK~ We've been on the road for a couple weeks and I am getting kind of anxious to see what our house looks like. Our 18 year old son has been home with our two big dogs and the phone calls have been rather sparse. The phone call yesterday went something like this:

G:  "Dad, Where's the stuff you put in the carpet scrubbing machine?"

T: "Underneath the kitchen sink. Your Mom says it is in a blue or green bottle."

G:  "OK"

End of conversation. Really? Don't you think I deserve to know why he is asking for the carpet scrubbing cleaner? I guess I will see soon enough.

Today's conversation goes like this:

T: "We will be home around such and such a time"

G: "OK."

T: "Be sure to put your truck in the other shed."

G: "Why- I am driving yours!"

End of conversation.

So, for the past two weeks it sounds like things have went rather well. Now, thinking about reality is kind of a shock to my system. The views like this for the past two weeks have stolen my identity.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I will need to switch gears and break out the sweaters and embrace Mother Nature as Winter is on the way! And on another note, I have not missed any of the daily shenanigans that our dogs choose to create. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
