And I Live In Iowa Because...........

OK~ I'm tired of Winter, so let's talk about Iowa and what we like about living in Iowa. I guess it would be fair to say that many of us live in Iowa because our families are nearby. In my case, that's true. I am surrounded by the in-laws, parents, brother, and sister-in-law. I have said for almost 27 years, I can't get by with too much, as family is on all sides of me.

The older I get, the less I appreciate the change of seasons. It was all fun and games when we could go outside and play in the snow with our boys. But dang, they grew up and I really have no interest to go anywhere when it's 0 degrees outside. How time changes everything. It's interesting how perspective changes each year. I'm sure I would have thought nothing about heading to the local sledding hill with our boys when they were 6 and 10 and it was zero degrees outside. Yep, we did that when our boys were young. Our boys liked to get out and run around. This Mom also refused to be stuck in a house for days on end. And it is true, some kids grow up never experiencing a sledding hill, so Iowa's kids are lucky! Fast forward 18 years- the heat of my home is pretty darn nice!

And then the cars came on the scene. As a parent of a teen driver, we've all had that moment when school is being dismissed early and the roads are 100% ice. Remember, as parents, we had to do that when we were younger too. We all learn by doing. Yes, through the power of prayer and some skill, our kids do manage to get where they need to be.

Four wheel drive is nice to have while living in Iowa. We have needed it a couple days this year just to get to the main highway.

Jensen LeMars Chrysler offers Motor Trends Truck Of The Year for 2013-2014, the Dodge RAM 1500. Safety is something we all need to keep in mind when we drive anywhere, but it becomes more of an issue when winter rolls around.

Spring time does bring lilacs (when they avoid a frost) and blossoms on the apple trees. It's fun to see things green up, as I know there's warmer days ahead. And as the season progresses, the soybean and corn fields really green things up.

I love the color that summer time has to offer in Iowa, as everything is so green. And here in North Iowa the terrain is very flat, so we can see for miles every which way. I live in Iowa because my family is here and it's where my Grandpa decided to plant his feet. Yep, that's how I ended up in Iowa- Iowa offers a way of life that you can't find in many other places. The family farm is still going and will be for years to come. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Iowa Blizzards Remind Us Of What We Need To Do

OK~ If you are a Mom with a teen or young adult driver in your life, you will get this. When the weather turns nasty and these young men in my life need to get to work, I become a worry wart. Maybe I should just turn it all over to faith and not worry, right? Well, there's something to be said about recommendations from the local police department and sheriff's department advising no travel, yet these businesses require their employees to report to work. Somewhere along the way there seems to be a lack of communication. And in case you have never witnessed a blizzard in Iowa, here's what it looks like. This is the view from our kitchen window to our barn. Can you see the barn?

One thing I have encouraged my boys to do is to have a winter survival kit in their car. I have encouraged them to do this, now have they done this? That remains to be seen.

Here in the Mid-West we have had an exceptional cold winter. It's important to have a blanket, windshield scraper, bottled water, candy bars, flashlight, shovel, gloves, wool socks, and band-aids. These are simple items, yet they seriously could save your life.

Can you imagine spending the night in a snow bank while stuck on a road? That has happened in our area and it can be a long night if you are not prepared. As a Mom, I'm always concerned about the safety of my boys when they venture onto icy Iowa highways. Jensen Delaerships in LeMars and Sioux City, Iowa, do offer a nice selection of reliable vehicles to help combat the elements. A vehicle with heat and a good set of tires are a necessity when living in Iowa.

If you are a parent of a new driver, my prayers are with you. I wish I could say that it gets easier as they get older, but it doesn't. I'm always praying that they get from Point A to Point B in a safe manner. My boys are 22 and 18 and I pray for their safety on these winter roads, every single day.

How do you cope with winter driving? Do you have a winter survival kit in your car? If not, make it a point to get one in your car today! This Mom is ready for Spring and ready for a day when she does not have to worry about winter driving conditions. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Really? Another Day With a High Below Zero

OK~ We've had day after day of below zero temps here in Iowa this year. Actually, during January this year we have had several days with a high of something below zero. We've been coping, trying to cope! I know many of my friends in the south struggle to survive when it gets around freezing. Who can blame them? Folks in the South are not used to freezing temperatures, where as in the Northland we anticipate cold.

These extreme cold temperatures are challenging for people, cars, and homes. I really can't blame our garage door for taking it's sweet time when I push the button for it to go up. It creaks and makes sounds that I did not know that it could. Thinking I need a new Jeep, from Deery Brothers: Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram dealership to store in here, maybe that would solve the creakiness, you think?

We do have blue skies today, the winds are a blowing, BUT we do have sunshine! A little bit of sunshine does wonders for the soul. I just wish it was easier to breathe when stepping outdoors. The cold air really does take your breath away.

Schools are closed throughout North Iowa. Families have the opportunity to play board games and maybe watch a movie or two. There's something to be said about the term snow day! Snow days to promote family togetherness can be a win, win.

The best solution for dealing with cold and snow seem to be the Caribbean! How about an escape to the Caribbean? A drive to the Des Moines or Minneapolis airport and I could be on my way. Definitely something to think about.

How are you and your family coping with Winter this season? Are you hitting the local ice skating rink, sledding or sitting around the kitchen table playing board games? On the flip side- Spring is coming! We just have to be patient. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Working Together Produces Greatness When It Comes To Social Media

OK~ It's no secret that I love social media and helping connect people. Some businesses have been slow to accept the idea that social media is a place you have to be in the world of business today. I have a simple tip for those business owners looking for a way to get involved.

If you are a business owner and have been dragging your feet to jump on the social media train, a great way to get going is to find a local business and partner up with them. If you see a social media campaign happening and you think, "Geeze, how do I get involved in that?" My advice is to call up the business owner that is hosting the event.

Social Media Planning Sessions Can Be Fun

Let the business owner know that you saw this fun campaign that they had going on and you would like to know how you could work together in the future. Keep in mind, this is not the time to call them and mention that you wish they would have asked you in the first place. Business owners cannot please everyone 24/7 and it is impossible to be all things to all people. But, by being aware of what is going on, you can find a new business partner.

Social media campaigns are fun and they can be a great way to deliver your message. Social media campaigns can reach a lot of people and spread the word about your business. There is no reason to feel slighted if you are not included in a specific campaign, as it opens the doorway up for new opportunity.

By looking at things with a positive perspective and future relationship, you will have opened new doorways, instead of closing them. Nobody likes to work on a campaign where doors are closed. It's all about building relationships and acting upon them.

I still believe it's best to discuss something in person, eye to eye when possible. With today's technology we can remain connected 24/7. We can work with folks located miles from us through Skype and Google Hangouts. There are endless ways for us to stay connected in 2014 and forward. It's up to each business owner to embrace social media and make it work for them, not against them.

So, tell me. When's the last time you worked together with someone on a social media campaign? I'm guessing you are ready to roll up your sleeves and conquer the next one. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Nutro Crunchy Treat Berry Flavor From Chewy.com Review

OK~ We've got two dogs in the house that have grown to really love the dog treats from Chewy.com. Each time I have the opportunity to review a new type of product from Chewy.com, I say yes. I know that our dogs will be extremely happy campers.

When the UPS man arrived with a package from Chewy.com it was immediate chaos. These two dogs seemed to know what was in the box. Do your dogs get this excited for a dog treat?

These Nutro crunchy treats are made with real mixed berries. They are delicious, natural dog treats. Featuring the flavor of real blueberries, cranberries, and cherries. There is no wheat or corn in these dog treats. These are treats your dog will love and you can feel good about offering them to your family pet. And the other cool thing? These dog treats are made in the USA.

Nutro crunchy treats are also available in real banana, real apple, pomegranate, and real carrots. If you want to feed your pet a snack you can feel good about, these treats are a good choice.

When you order through Chewy.com you can be assured of customer service. Their friendly customer service team is available 24/7 and can be reached at 1-800-67-CHEWY (672-4399). If your order is more than $49.00, your shipping charges are FREE. Orders under $49 are a flat rate fee of only $4.95.

So, the next time you are wanting to order tasty treats for your pet, take a swing over to Chewy.com. There's a whole lot of other pet fun on the website, so be sure to take it all in.

Here in the North our dogs are ready for a lot more outdoor activity. It's been cold here in Iowa and our dogs are wimps, as are the owners! So..... Spring can't come soon enough, but we know Chewy.com is here to help with the winter fun when it comes to our pets.

*I did receive one package of treats for review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's.

You Mean, There's A Number For That Too?

OK~ There's a number for everything we seem to do anymore. I would love to know if I am the only Mom that is responsible for knowing the numbers to everything, for everyone in the whole house?

Just today we were making a purchase and ( I won't say "his" name) he turned to me and said, "What's the number?" Yep, there is a number for everything! Do you remember the numbers you need to know each time you make a purchase?

So, I started to think. You know, thinking can often be kind of dangerous. Just last summer we were in a hardware store in Estes Park and our youngest son was going to purchase his Colorado fishing license. Well, he did not know his Social Security number, SO, he turned to me and I just rattled it off! As a Mom, I guess we are programmed to learn all of these numbers. Thankfully Mom knew the numbers, so he could fly fish along the trail to Black Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.

There are numbers for school registration forms, sports registration forms, physical forms, and anything else you can think of. We need to know social security numbers, telephone numbers, birth dates, vaccination dates, surgery dates, addresses, and the list goes on and on.

And just when we Moms think we have all of the right numbers memorized, someone will ask, "Mom, do you remember my password to the kindle?" Yep, these electronic devices have added to the number madness!

The times are a definitely changing and Moms everywhere are going to have to find ways to remember the numbers and passwords that they need to know.

How do you remember all of the numbers for everyone in your household? For me, it's just been through repeating them over and over for 20+ years! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mother Nature Has a Grip On This House And This Mom Is Trying To Adjust

OK~ Our household has been pretty cozy the past ten days. When the winds are blowing 30 mph and the actual air temperature is -13 degrees, it doesn't make for a lot of outdoor fun. Our household now consists of two grown adults, an 18 year old and two dogs. One would think we would all do our own little thing and life would be just peachy. Well, not so.

I enjoy spending time at home when I can pick and choose what I am going to do. I like being able to work a little bit, move some laundry around, and then step outdoors for a few minutes. Well, Winter in Iowa does not allow for all of that freedom. One could argue that the answer is to still go outdoors and dress in tons of layers and enjoy it. Would someone explain to me how putting on all of those layers can be fun? I don't see the value of it. Maybe if I was still 10 years old I would want to go out and build a snow fort or another outdoor snow activity it would interest me. This 40 something year old Mom has no desire to experience that again!

So, how did I cope this past week? It was challenging. When Mother Nature dictates that I need to stay home and in the house, I do not like it. When I choose to stay home and in the house, I do like it. I guess you could call me stubborn.

The one and only solution that I can come up with is to move South. A cold snap to southerners is a couple days of maybe freezing and winter has passed. The older I get, the more this body is telling me to get out of the cold and into the warmer climate.

Oh yeah, and you know how we are always blessed with car chaos. We had that too this week. Why would a heater choose not to work during the coldest days of the year? Go figure. Moving forward- I will continue to keep working and search for all that color that I so dearly miss this time of year. The white, frosty trees are pretty for one day and that's it. Time for those greens, blues, and floral colors to return.

For those of you that had to deal with five days of an extended Christmas vacation this past week, I honestly have no clue how you did it. With kids cooped up in the house that long, I think I would have been pulling my hair out! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Winter Has Arrived With A Vengeance In North Iowa

OK~ We have Winter and boy, do we have Winter here in North Iowa. We are down below zero (actual temperature) for the next couple days. I can recall the single digit below zero days, but double digit below zero for a high just sounds ridiculous!

As my Facebook newsfeed scrolls in front of me, I see several young adults posting that they do not recall temperatures this cold. And you know what? They are too young to remember it being this cold. The last time we were this cold here in North Iowa was 1995. Many of these young adults were very young or just born.

The one good thing out of this cold, is the fact that we don't have a lot of snow on the ground. Here's a good view of how full our road ditches are, which are not too bad.

And it was on Friday this past week that our local school district decided to close their doors for Monday. I cannot recall school closing when I was younger due to cold wind chills. But then again, I did not have to walk for two miles through a blizzard to the country school like my relatives did. Times have changed. Are we smarter, or are we more scared of what "could" happen? I struggle with this. Life is full of the unknown and our kids need to know that there are risks in life. But then again, I suppose one of those risks should not include going to school and something "could" happen.

Now those bone chilling temps of -13 degrees (our actual high forecasted for Monday) is not a hot one by any means. It's time to bundle up and try to see the beauty of Winter. There is beauty all around us. How about this sunset?

If your kids or yourself are outdoors, make sure you have gloves, face masks, hats, wool socks, boots, a heavy coat and are dressed in layers. And one other note, make sure your winter survival kit is packed in your car! Water, candybars, extra wool socks, first aid kid, portable "charged" cell phone charger, and an extra blanket are a good basic winter survival kit to toss in your car.

If you have teen drivers in your house, the day off from school on Monday may be a good day to take inventory on those winter survival kits. Once the kids head back to school, we will still have very cold temps around.

Embrace Winter friends, as it looks like it has arrived with a vengeance. I am going to hunker down in my house and keep the hot chocolate in the mugs. How will you and your family deal with these ultra cold temps? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
