Attitude Makes A Difference In Everything We Do

OK~ I've been thinking a lot about the word attitude lately. Do you ever think of your attitude or are you always thinking about the attitude of those around you?

Just today I was in a line at a local grocery store and not one single employee was smiling. I thought to myself, how sad is it that these people come to work every day and are not happy? I get it that some may have been having a bad day or felt under the weather. Seriously, life is too short to have a job that you dislike that much.

I will admit, Winter has been a challenge. Take a look at something like this to quickly change your attitude. Make it the best that you can!

Could it be that one person came to work with a poor attitude that rubbed off on the person next to them, and then the sour attitude kicked in for everyone? I have learned from experience through all of my 40 something years and my life as a Mom, that attitude makes the difference in 99% of what we do in our lives.

Throughout our younger sons high school trapshooting days, I can tell you that attitude made a huge difference in how successful many trapshooters were. Kids that came to practice without their heads in the game, did not shoot well. Kids that came to practice with their heads in the game, shot well! So many things in our lives are determined by our attitude and it should be something we all focus on every single day.

I have chosen to surround myself with people that want positive things in their lives, and I can tell you that it has made a huge difference in my own life. Of course, it does help that I have a job that I love. Being able to write, connect, and work with people day in and day out, I am happy.

So, how is your attitude? Try having a positive attitude every single day and I'll bet you and your family will all be much happier! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Winter In Iowa: Red Triangle And School Alerts Seem To Be The Norm This Year

OK~ We've got winter here in full force. It's returned with a vengeance. It never really left, but we did have a couple days of upper 30's, so we were all ready to break out the flip flops. And then Mother Nature decided she was going to follow through with yet, another red triangle that has popped up on my cell phone for 90% of the winter.

That red triangle has represented the following for the past six weeks:

  • High Wind Watch
  • High Wind Warning
  • Winter Storm Watch
  • Winter Storm Warning
  • Ice Storm Watch
  • Ice Storm Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory
  • Blizzard Watch
  • Blizzard Warning
Seriously, I do appreciate these alerts, but I am begging Mother Nature to give us at least a 12 hour break from the red triangle popping up on my cell phone. This probably does warrant a red triangle, but I really don't want to admit it.

And then the school issue pops up. Now that our boys have both graduated from high school, I am not personally impacted if school is held or not. But, I do see how frustrated families are with the issue. We have been under a Blizzard Watch for the past couple days and a Blizzard Warning today. Two local school districts opted to have school. The issue I have with this is the fact that the Iowa DOT was providing Iowans with tons of public service announcements telling folks to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. I personally respect the Iowa DOT and value their opinion, not so sure that these two local school districts think that way. They did dismiss a couple hours early, in the midst of heavy, wet snow. What was so interesting, is the fact that right after school was dismissed, accidents started popping up all over the place.  It's definitely a day of job security for our local highway patrol and policemen.

What's a parent to do? And we all know that it's not just that easy to call in and excuse a kid from school. When our boys were in Middle School, I had to drag them into the Dr.'s office when they had the stomach flu to get a medical excuse. They attended school regularly, but this was the district policy if you did not want an unexcused absence on your child's record.

Blizzard or not- I get why parents home school. Home schooling parents did not have to battle the school attendance issue and knew that their kids were safe during an Iowa blizzard.

Hopefully, the snow days for our kids will be easier for school districts to call, as Spring gets closer. In the grand scheme of things, there has to be a safer and smarter day to have school.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to thank your child's bus driver. They have a large bus to maneuver around with a load of precious cargo. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

No Cell Phone For One Week- Yikes, This Mom Does Not Think She Would Survive

Disclosure: As part of The Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 10+ years.

OK~ Do you ever wondered how connected you really are to your cell phone? We have cruised on a couple Carnival cruises over the past four months with limited internet service and I will admit it, I missed my smartphone. The actual calling part of it, not so much, but the ability to remain connected to everyone was difficult to do. I am fortunate enough to be a U.S. Cellular customer and experience their fast, reliable network. I have grown to love how quickly and conveniently I can connect with my friends and family.

My smartphone would have been a great companion while on board the cruise ship. Just the ability to text each other as to where we were on the ship would have made the cruise a whole lot sweeter. All in all, I love cruising and YES, I will cruise again! Seriously, this in-ability to stay connected, just about killed me. I was also a little worried as to if I would miss an e-mail from a client, which could have led to an opportunity that I would have liked to participate in. I was not willing to pay for international charges, so this was my best option.

Mark Malkoff, recently took the No Phone Challenge. Mark gave up his phone for a full, so called "normal" week. I honestly don't think I could even go one full week without my cell phone while at home. Check out how Mark was feeling by Day #7!

Just imagine, all of the day to day things that we rely on our smart phones for! Just like Mark, I would have to re-train an actual alarm clock in the house, better yet, I would have to find it! Vacation time was hard to be disconnected, but in my day to day life, I really don't think I could do it.

I would find myself begging to borrow someone else's phone to make a phone call. Seriously, I do not even know if we have any pay phones in our local town anymore, are they still around? If they are, I am sure it's no longer a dime or a quarter to make a phone call.

In all honesty, I missed being able to pick up my smart phone and check out what my sons and family were doing. Social media has opened the doorway for all of us to stay connected with our families 24/7 and I really missed that. Finally, after picking up my phone several times and staring at a blank screen, I put it in a drawer- dang, that was hard to do. I wonder how many cruising people dig that phone out of that drawer? Disclosure: This Mom left it in the drawer- nail biting and all!

With nearly half of American's pledging to communicate more often with family and friends in 2014, mobile phones will prove to be essential for those looking to create better moments with those they care about. So essential in fact, that one in five smartphone owners would rather live without food and water than their mobile devices, according to a recent U.S. Cellular survey. More than 75 percent of smartphone users would rather live without chocolate, while 69 percent would rather live without caffeine. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Social Media Breakfast Club is Changing How Social Media Is Recognized In My Hometown

OK~ When I started on this blogging train five years ago, I had no idea of how to use social media and quite honestly; I hardly knew what it meant. Well, I quickly learned that I had to learn how several social media platforms worked. After all, I had a blog and I wanted to share it with people all around the world. That to me, was an exciting thought!

Over time, I have learned the ins and outs of several platforms. I have also learned that some social media platforms work well for others and not so well for other types of businesses. What I do know is the fact that the #1 way to communicate is still good old FACE TO FACE communication!

We all know that it is not possible to communicate face to face 365 days of the year, so that is where SKYPE and Google Hangouts come into play. Over the course of the last five years I saw more folks in my hometown begin to express an interest in social media.Yeah, I know, we Iowans are usually a little behind what's happening on the East and West Coast.

For myself, as a blogger, attending blog conferences has literally changed the direction my blogging career has taken. I have met some of the leaders in the industry and the social media advice I have received at these conferences is truly priceless. Being able to have a face to face conversation with someone that can inspire and challenge me, is worth its weight in gold. As with any career, when you get with "your people" you are fired up and ready to move your business forward.

In June of this year, I started a social media breakfast in a local coffee shop. It's a casual, laid back group of local folks that have an interest in social media. I am wishing I would have started this sooner, as I think the interest in social media has existed, but local folks had no clue where to turn. We average 15 people per meeting (room capacity) and different folks attend each month. Now, if everyone showed up every single time, the local coffee shop owner would have to add on to this room! I love that this group is flexible and there is no pressure to attend each meeting.

If you are wanting to connect with more folks locally with an interest in social media, start up a social media breakfast club. We meet from 8:30-10:00 a.m. giving folks energy to kick off their day. We have one person share for approximately 15 minutes on a topic related to social media. And the really cool thing, we all have had an interest in social media and new friendships are being formed. That to me, says it all. And again, it's all about social media and it's meeting face to face!

Tell me, have you wanted to start a social media club in your area? If so, when do you meet and is it well attended? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mom and Dad Return Home To Find This And That

OK~ I will admit that it is pretty darn nice to have an 18 year old to stay home and take care of the dogs and house while my hubby and I leave town. So, what should parents expect when they return home? It's no secret that our boys are slobs, as they like to leave their stuff here and there. And I tend to toss things here and there now and then too. Upon entering the house, here's the kitchen!

After a week of being absent, hubby and I honestly didn't think it was too bad. It appeared he had hot dogs, hot dogs, and hot dogs! An easy meal for an 18 year old boy. Maybe, just maybe one day he will surprise us and things will be all neat and tidy. And yes, the counter was clear when we left.

Now, his tv area is another story, Check this out.

It looks like Subway, McDonald's and Taco John's faired well while we were gone. Nathan's hot dogs and fast food kept his belly full while we were away. The biggest surprise was the fact that he drank 3/4 of a gallon of milk while we were gone. Top that off with all of these pop containers, I don't think our kid missed many liquids while were were out of town. If this is seriously the biggest issue we have when we leave town, no big deal, it's a simple fix. Took five minutes and things were good to go!

And then there were the two dogs. They are a challenge, as they like to go in and out, in and out. Seriously, it can be -10 degrees outside and they like to play the let's go in and out game! I cannot wait for warmer temps to arrive and stick around for a while. I keep telling myself that spring is coming and we will then have a mud festival to enjoy! Right now a mud festival sounds pretty darn inviting to me.

It was reassuring to know that we did have a responsible 18 year old son at home holding down the fort. He does a good job! The dogs are happy and were well fed and it appears that our son faired ok in the food department too.

So, back to the day to day routine and the chaos of day to day living return now! And yes, we did have to ask him to clear off his table, so we could actually see the tv. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
