Pur Gum Review: Kick Aspartame

OK~ I'm not a huge gum chewer, but I will admit I kind of like to chomp on a piece of gum now and then. The good folks over at Pur Gum sent me samples of their two new flavors and you know what? I kind of like them. Cool mint and cinnamon are the two new flavors I had the delight of sampling.

You are probably now asking, why should I care that this gum does not have aspartame? Well, aspartame is a man-made synthetic sweetener that is found in most sugar-free gums, beverages, and candies. This also means that pregnant moms can safely enjoy chewing on Pur Gum.

Pur is sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol is a healthy alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners. Each piece of Pur Gum contains 1 gram of xylitol and 2.4 calories per gram. If nuts and soy are a problem for you, Pur Gum is a fantastic option, as it is made in a nut free environment.

And just in case you are diabetic, Pur Gum is diabetic friendly It does not cause a spike in blood sugar, and actually helps reduce sugar and carbohydrate cravings, perfect for those suffering from diabetes.

It's no surprise that Pur Gum is the #1 selling aspartame-free gum. It tastes good and does not have ingredients that make a person cringe. Pur Gum does not contain any animal ingredients either, which means it is 100% certified vegan.

With so many excellent features, why not give Pur Gum a try? If you don't like it, I can guarantee you that you will find someone who does enjoy it! This household is enjoying Pur Gum and all it has to offer. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

*As always the opinions expressed in this post are mine and nobody else's. I did receive samples of gum for review purposes.

Memorial Day Means Different Things To Different Folks & I'm Not Sure I Like It

OK~ Today is Memorial Day and it is a day where we remember our fallen soldiers. What is so interesting to me is to how this day is viewed so differently all across our country. I have to say that I was floored when I hopped onto Facebook this morning and saw that several parents were commenting that their kids were in school today. Upon reading that, my head began to spin.

I am wondering, how do parents deal with school if their kids were in a local parade or participating in a flag service at the local cemetery? I would like to think that these kids would be excused from school. It bothers me that families may have had to make these choices today. Memorial Day and an education are both very, very important. I don't think it is fair that families were forced to choose between these two things.

I am old enough to recall when Memorial Day was during the week, May 30th;  and I can remember relatives referring to it as "Decoration Day." As I got older, I began to realize that Memorial Day is when we remember all of those that have passed before us. And yes, it is a day when we do take extra time to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. It's because of their willingness to serve that we have the many freedoms we have today. Since going to a three day weekend, has that lessened the acknowledgement of this holiday?

I am truly grateful for those that have served our country and currently serve. It's because of these people, my family and I can have the freedoms that we have today. I loved the Facebook post that one of my friends had. She shared her grandchildren visiting her parent's grave alongside her. The family history that is learned through a simple visit to a cemetery is truly priceless.

So, today we remember....... It's back to work for 2/3 of our house in a few hours. The Memorial Day weekend ends soon here at our home. Did you have a nice Memorial Day weekend? I hope you did. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A Quiet Holiday Weekend In Iowa

OK~ Another holiday weekend is upon us and you know what? We don't have any specific plans and I am ok with that. I hear so many people talking about being stressed out about being here and being there, and I'm just going to pray for nice weather so we can be outdoors at home here.

It's wonderful that Spring has finally officially sprung here in Iowa. The farmers are still planting corn and soybeans, as it's taken time for the fields to dry out. I kind of wonder if late May planting is going to be our new normal here in Iowa. Each Spring we can't wait for the leaves to turn green and the buds to come out on the trees. When they do, we are all just ecstatic! Our apple trees look to be good this year!

I always take our blue skies and clean air for granted, and I know I shouldn't. There's something to be said about that fresh air that we have to breathe in Iowa.

So, for now, I am gearing up for a quiet weekend at home. According to reports I have seen, it appears that a lot of folks are traveling this week-end. Many folks traveling more than 50 miles from home. So, my friends that are traveling- be safe and have fun! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Bloggy Conference Offers Life Experiences You Can't Miss Out On

OK~ I've been on a fun little adventure with a Sharon on SharonTheMoments. Sharon and I met at Bloggy Conference in Ohio in 2011.

Sharon and I immediately connected and who would have ever imagined that less than three years later we would be traveling together? We spent one day park hopping at Walt Disney World and are now enjoying the ocean, sunshine, sand, heated swimming pool and the hospitality that can be found at Tuckaway Shores in Indialantic, Florida.

If you have ever wondered if you should attend a blog conference, this is one reason why! The friends that I have met attending blog conferences have become some of my best friends in real life. It's not only about growing a business and learning how to be a better blogger, it's all about the relationships.

Sharon resides in Ohio and I reside in Iowa. This goes to show you that through technology and social media it's very easy to stay in touch with the people you meet in real life. It also works the other way around, as the people you meet online can become great friends in real life.

If you are sitting on the fence and wondering if you need to attend Bloggy Conference in September 2014, this is one reason why you need to. The relationships you build at this blog conference are real and can be life changing.

Sharon and I are having a ball. You know, there was this rocket launch at 8:03 p.m. in Cocoa Beach and somehow, someway, we had to watch it at 8:07 p.m. on someone else's phone. Imagine that? Two bloggers carried away talking and forgot to keep an eye on the clock. Can you say epic fail?

I hope to see you at Bloggy Conference in 2014- Who knows where my next adventure will be? The people I meet in my life seem to be determining where I am going.... Nothing wrong with that! The people I meet are rock stars and continue to bless my life in many ways. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Mother's Day And A Birthday

OK~ It's been a busy week. Mother's Day and a birthday in the house! Would someone enlighten me as to where 19 years went? Our little guy is now more than 6'3" tall and is 19 years old.

I can recall 19 years ago when he was born. It had been wet and the farmers had a break between corn and bean planting. The day he was born it was cloudy and rainy. The following days were warm and sunny. The beans were going in the fields on the day Garrett came home from the hospital. I spent Mother's Day in the hospital that year with our newborn son.

Our adventure as a family of four began. It took no longer than two hours at home when our oldest son sat on our newborn in his infant seat. Yep, and the fun has not ended! Never a dull moment in these 19 years. Then there was the time when both boys decided to bring a pail of worms in the house and not tell me. You know what? Worms smell really, really bad when they die! If it has not been a dog causing chaos, it's been a kid. I would NOT change any of it for the world- this life of parenting is pretty darn fun. Here's our 19 year old when he was 9 months. This was when he liked Mickey Mouse- fast forward one year later, he screamed at the sight of Mickey Mouse

I stumbled across a post through Facebook today that was a simple one, "How old were you when you became a Mom?" What's so interesting..... Oodles of responses and women were between the ages of 16 and 40 when they first became Moms. I know for a fact that many Moms are having kids at older ages and enjoying their lives as Moms. Moms are awesome Moms of all ages and it's evident that Moms work hard, day in and day out, no matter what their age!

In the long and short of this post, my message here is.... For those of you that have young kiddos, I kid you not, the years fly by! You will be in my shoes someday and ask, "Where did those years go? After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

A Boy And His Dog

OK~ It's been a tough couple of days. It's true, the hardest part of pet ownership is saying goodbye. Our beloved Wally turned 11 on May 3rd. He arrived in our home ten years ago at the age of one. He was a "dump off." This is what we refer to pets that are left to run in the country and end up on our door step. We were never able to connect him to his original owner and he quickly made himself at home.

That first year was rough, as he had been used to running. He would run for miles on end and then return home in a couple days. He arrived neutered, so that was not the reason he would run. Once he finally realized that he had a home where he could call home, he stayed. And let me tell you, Wally was one of the most loyal dogs a person could ever own.

I will also confess that he did drive me "crazy" when he would sneak into the barn to devour the cat food. It took me a few weeks to figure out why the cat food disappeared faster than usual. Once he knew I was onto his game, he made sure I did not see him enter the barn again. If he did, I missed it!

Easter Sunday, just a few days ago, he was chasing birds and running out into the field to bury his catch! He also walked down to the creek with the four of us, which was rare, on this day. It had been several years that all four of us actually walked down to our dogs favorite Iowa swimming hole. Wally walked with us, but it was quiet evident that it took everything out of him to do it.

His usual spot when Garrett would be coming home from high school was not to be missed for all of Garrett's high school days.

He aged really fast the last couple weeks, as more gray appeared around his mouth and on his feet. Wally slowed down, slept more, stopped eating and drinking, and basically told us that his time with us was up. He was ready to move on and run with Chester and Max, our two shelties that we previously owned.

We have so many fun memories. The skunk stories will live forever, as well as his desire to ride on the loader of the tractor. Wally loved to dig and it was quite common to find him digging a hole with dirt flying several feet in the air. He loved to hunt for gophers!

He would also wait for hours in this location!

He and Garrett were best friends! There is something to be said about a boy and his dog. A week before he passed away, Wally was struggling to walk. He literally drug himself up two flights of stairs and hopped onto Garrett's bed, his usual sleeping place. Garrett was not home, but he knew Garrett would be coming soon.

We will miss our loyal companion, but we know he is in a much better place. Skipper, Wally's companion for the past six years, is also sad today. He is on a hunger strike and trying to find his new "normal" around our house.

Life goes on and our family will find our new normal. Losing a pet is tough. They become part of our families and it's hard to let them go. Wally is back home here. Three generations buried him- Grandpa, Dad, and Son. He's lying right where all the critters love to run. There's something to be said about a boy and his dog. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Rural America: How Do We Keep Our Local Communities Alive?

OK~ It's been a few days since I posted the following to my personal Facebook page, "What types of stores and businesses do you want to see in your community that are currently not there?" Keep in mind that this was from my personal friends. Just imagine the things a business owner could learn through social media. Here are some of the answers:

  • Grocery store on a small scale, even if it was a gas station.
  • I would love to have a craft store in town, without having to drive an hour and a half.
  • An Italian Restaurant.
  • Something for Kids to do.
  • A bagel shop.
  • A decent store to buy high end women's clothing.
  • Christian retail book store.
  • I'd love a food co-op.
  • A Sam's Club would be welcome.
  • A glass studio.
  • I would love to have a Trader Joe's.
  • A Thai Restaurant would be nice.
  • A grocery store on the south end of Mason City.
These answers came from all across the United States, as well as the Mason City area. This is just a sampling of the 40+ comments that filled the thread. No matter where we live, we all seem to want what is not there. Could it be that we have determined what is there by our buying habits?

What I see in this quick list are business opportunities and a chance for business owners to step up their game. For example, if you own a business that features kids activities, you obviously need to find ways to get your kid friendly activities out there.

Here in rural America it is quite evident that we need to change our ways of thinking. Rural America is thriving, but we do have work to do.With oodles of people relocating to other parts of the country, specifically here in North Iowa, we need to step up our game!

I had the pleasure of touring Couser Cattle Company this past week and let me tell you, Tim Couser nailed it! I asked him what his advice would be to a young person going into farming today that had no ties to a family farm? He responded, "It's nearly impossible. Many of our older farmers that are nearing retirement age need to take these young people under their wing and mentor them." Could this be part of the mass exodus of young people in Iowa?

It's true, our older citizens need to be mentoring these younger people, not just in agriculture; but in all types of businesses.

Two North Iowa business owners chimed in on the Facebook question that I asked and they responded with, "I basically learned that retail works Oct-Dec. in this town. I concentrate on markets, online sales, and wholesale the rest of the time." Another North Iowa business owner responded with, "I've been reading everyone's comments and all sounds great but the biggest duty to us all is to support the new businesses that open."

Now, not every business is going to fit in a community, but we need to support those businesses that interest us. I love the idea of having choices, and I can honestly say that I do wish we had more choices locally. But hey, I can usually make do. I did learn that a person cannot find a sun dress in North Iowa during the month of January, as that's a purchase you need to make upon your sunny, warm destination!

This leads me to a statement that many may dislike. Why is it OK to drive to Minneapolis to the Mall of America to shop when the Minnesota DOT is recommending no travel? I'm now talking about a two hour drive on I-35 from Mason City to Minneapolis. This happened over and over again this past Winter. Families would fill up a car with their kids and their friends. I am thinking it's a competition amongst families today. This 40 something Mom is still shaking her head thinking, "Really? Where is common sense?"

I love to travel and I love to get out of town, who doesn't? But in all honesty, if we keep behaving the way we do, we will no longer have what we currently have.

This brings me back to the local shops that we would like to see in our communities. Are we willing to step up to the plate to shop locally or are we going to let our communities in Iowa die a slow death? There is something to be said about Tim Couser's perspective. Business owners that are nearing retirement have an opportunity to find younger people to mentor. Imagine how our main streets could look if residents spent their money locally and older store owners were willing to help continue a legacy.

I have no doubt that there are good people out there mentoring our young people all across the state of Iowa. But, it's obvious that there is work to be done. So, tell me- Are you focusing on spending more dollars locally, or do you spend more of it out of your area? There are no right or wrong answers. The fact is, if local residents do not support their local businesses, they will no longer have them in their neighborhood. And at that point, the drive will be longer! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
