How Christmas Changes Through The Years

OK~ There's something to be said that Christmas does not change, but it does. One thing that never changes is the fact that we celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus and gather together. It's also no secret that many do not have anywhere to go on Christmas, and it's just an ordinary day. And then there's the family photo when the dog won't cooperate, yeah, that's us!

For several years now, our parents and our kids' grandparents have traveled to Texas for the winter. So... that brought changes to how we celebrate Christmas. Christmas is celebrated in November with extended family and then in December, it's just the four of us. Our boys are now 20 and 24, so that brings a different feel, as well.

We had never considered going to a movie on Christmas Day until this year. Yes, we went to Star Wars and I'm glad we did. It was honestly something that I never grew up doing on Christmas Day and felt kind of odd, but after I got in the theater, it was all good.

We exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, which was a tradition that my husbands side of the family always had. We have kept that with our boys, and I also know that down the road that day may change. Right now our boys do not have a significant other, so there are no scheduling conflicts.

It was after 9 a.m. this morning that anyone was moving around the house. Much different from 10 years ago. The years fly by and if there's one thing I have learned, it's ok to be flexible and enjoy the time together that you can have.

Reflecting on Christmas 2015 has me asking, "Why do we have to have a day on the calendar to remind us to love one another?" Anyone else have any thoughts on that? I'd love to hear them. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

More Important Stories From The North Iowa Bloggers (Part Four)

OK~ It's time to share Part Four of the important stories that the North Iowa Bloggers have to share. The last part of this series I wrote was in  Part 3. Before Part 3, Part 2 was shared. and before that, there was Part 1. In case you haven't figure it out- we have some really awesome writers that reside here in North Iowa.

I'd like you to meet Abbey. Abbey blogs over at Mind Body Babies. Abbey is passionate about helping families. She is a doula and loves being part of the process of families greeting a new baby. She consistently offers great advice for new Moms to be over on her Mind Body Babies Facebook Page, as well. Are you a breastfeeding Mom that is challenged? Abbey will help you find the information and support that you need.

Meet Laura of All Things Travel. Laura enjoys traveling all around the Globe. If you want to know about cruising through Alaska, she has you covered! Maybe you want to know what the national parks look like out west, she's your go to gal. Laura's travels will inspire you to pick up the pace in exploring our beautiful world.

Leslie of The Gym Mom is exactly that, a gym mom. Leslie shares stories about her family and their adventures in gyms all across the country. If you and your family see a Mom doing a handstand in front of a national monument, it may very well be North Iowa Blogger, Leslie of The Gym Mom. Are your kids in sports or want to be? Leslie is a great resource for you, as well.

It's hard to believe that this is Part Four and there is more to come! I am so blessed to be surrounded with all of this awesome in North Iowa! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Embracing The Christmas Spirit Without Snow

OK~ If you are like me, you are realizing that we are probably going to have a "brown" Christmas in Iowa. It is no secret that I am not a fan of winter, but I can tell you that a little dusting of snow on the ground for Christmas Eve would be ideal. We had a light dusting of snow the other day and we were left with this stunning sunset.

Last week I traveled south, to Florida. I met a local woman who said to me, "We have no lights out this year, as it's been too hot." So, as you can tell, there are a lot of people having a hard time embracing the Christmas spirit this year. We have come to expect snow, cooler temps and all those things that scream Christmas.

In the grand scheme of things, do we need snow or cold to be kind to one another? No, we don't. We also don't need snow and cold to be reminded that we celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas. We have been programmed to expect so many things in our society, that it's often easy to forget the real reasons behind many things in our day to day lives.

The spirit of giving is alive 365 days of the year. If we all took the time to think of others throughout the year, we would not feel so rushed on the days that rush up to December 25th. I have made a better effort throughout 2015 when it comes to connecting with people through snail mail and the like. Am I perfect? No... I truly have a LOT of work to do in 2016.

Just this morning I saw a friend post a request for gifts for teens and the outpouring of giving was fabulous. Social media brings a new avenue of awareness when it comes to reaching out and helping those in need. This particular family was homeless for part of 2015 and in the process of getting back on their feet. Because of social media and someone willing to share their need, this family will have a great Christmas. This, my friends, is what the Christmas season is all about.

I challenge you to put your smart phones down and engage in conversation. Several games of 500 will be played at our home with a few good laughs along the way. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

North Iowa Bloggers Continue To Inspire And Share Their Stories (Part Three)

OK~ The North Iowa Bloggers are story tellers and let me tell you, they all share their stories with their own voices. That is what makes each of them unique. You met three of them and then met three more, and here are three more! The North Iowa Bloggers always have fun stories to share. When you read what they write, I know you will be inspired to try something new.

Meet Mary of Farm Girl Cook'n  she shares her life in Rural Iowa and a lot of family recipes. From lefse to butter pecan ice cream, She is proud of the fact that she grew up on a farm and learned a lot about cooking for farmers. Mary recently shared her story over on Latham Seeds website, check it out! From cooking supper to feeding a crew out of the fields, Mary has you covered.

Laura of Life On Skyview, shares her life on an Iowa farm. Laura is passionate about life on her Iowa farm and she would love to tell you about her cows. Living in Iowa all of her life, she has many family traditions to share. Her story about her experience with FFA is one you need to read. Traditions are a theme when you live in Iowa. Do you and your family have any traditions that are unique to living in Iowa?

Alicia of The Pork Diaries is always serving up something tasty! Did you see her most recent story about Bacon and Maple Krackers? The words bacon and maple immediately interested me! Alicia shares a little bit of pork and a whole lot more! If you read Alicia's stories, you will quickly learn that she has an active youngster in the house and adventures with her pigs.

The North Iowa Bloggers visit a lot of different places and introduce their readers to new communities all across the country. They have a strong interest in North Iowa Communities, as well as the midwest. Three of us visited Omaha this past summer and learned quickly that Omaha has a lot to offer.

The North Iowa Bloggers continue to inspire me and I hope they inspire you, as well. Stay tuned... there are several more North Iowa Bloggers that you need to meet. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Paw-some ways to include pups in the holidays (and find out which states have the merriest dogs!) & Giveaway

Happy Howlidays!
OK~I love the holiday season — the cold weather (not really), the yummy food, and of course, all of the festivities! You know who else loves them too? My dog, Skipper.  I'm thinking it may be because of all the extra lovin' and gifts he gets from the family. Although, he's not a fan of Halloween as he's often painted up like a skunk. He is black and it's very easy to spray paint a white stripe down his back. Something tells me he enjoys the holiday treats a little more.

It turns out that I'm not the only pet mama to spoil her pup during this time of year.  That's why I love this super cute website called TheNosePrint.com from Big Heart Pet Brands (the makers of Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni, Canine Carry Outs, and Milo's Kitchen).  They really know how to celebrate the holidays with your pup!

On TheNosePrint.com, check out some of the fun doggy do-it-yourself ideas they've dreamed up:
My favorite was the Mistletreat.

Get it? (I love a good pun!) And this treat is sure to be a hit with Skipper.  Slobbery kisses? Check. Yummy treat? Check. Yes, it's pretty much the best gift idea ever.

I'm also loving the homemade paw-print ornament. I've seen these with children's hand prints before. Why not have your fur child make an ornament too?

Other great homemade doggy gifts include a treat bouquet, a sweet treat jar, and a ho-ho-howliday treat bag. Yes, Skipper is going to have a very nice holiday break. The boys and us love to spoil him!

The NosePrint.com also asked 3,000 Americans about their dog-related holiday habits, including whether their dog is involved in gift-giving, stocking-stuffing, Christmas sweater-wearing, and other holiday traditions. We have never gotten into the dog sweater thing here. Believe me, it's been tried, but not a hit.

What they found is that Americans really LOVE their pets. For instance, did you know 71% of dog parents give gifts to their pups? Have you completed your Christmas doggy shopping yet?

According to the survey, here are the top 5 reasons people give gifts to their dog:
 1. To express love to my dog:  72%
 2. Because it's fun for me:  60%
 3. To help my dog feel included like a family member:  54%
 4. To give my dog a moment of happiness:  53%
 5. To feel closer and bond with my dog:  43%

For me, I like to give presents to Skipper because of all of these reasons. He's such an important part of the family — I can't imagine the holidays without him.

The study also shared how often dogs are included into popular Christmas traditions:
1.    48% of dog parents hang a Christmas stocking for their dog.
2.    43% of dog parents include a dog in a photo for a family holiday card.
3.    32% post photos of their dog on social media with a holiday message.
4.    29% dress up their dog in a holiday-themed costume or outfit.
5.    22% make or buy dog-themed holiday decorations.

For photos and instructions on how to add more dog-related fun to your home holiday traditions, check out these cool projects they have here:
Finally, want to know which states have the most spoiled pups?
The 2015 TheNosePrint.com Santa Dog Index ranks states based on how much, on average, dog parents will spend on their furry kids:

Top 10 States That Spend the Most on Holiday Gifts for Dogs:
 1. New Jersey: $29.61 (average gift spending per dog for state residents)
 2. New York: $28.95
 3. Pennsylvania: $28.75
 4. Utah: $27.75
 5. Georgia: $27.04
 6. California: $26.07
 7. Washington: $25.81
 8. Florida: $25.13
 9. Illinois: $24.98
 10. Virginia: $24.58

Apparently, it's good to be a dog in the New York tri-state area.  You can find the complete rankings of all 50 states at The Nose Print.Com. Here in Iowa we don't spend near as much as other states. I'm guessing it's because we baby our dogs all year long.

One final thing:  The folks at TheNosePrint.com have generously offered to give away a FREE Christmas doggy care package filled with some of the most delicious stocking stuffer treats for your pup.

From today through December 18, 2015 register to win the following:

To be entered to win the care package, just visit DIY decor article on TheNosePrint.com  and tell me in the comments below which DIY doggy decor project that you think your family would love best. Mobile Payments Make Holiday Shopping Easier Than Ever #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular Customer for 15+ years.

OK~ Smart phones make it easy to shop this holiday season. Gone are the days when it is absolutely necessary to have a wallet in your purse or in your back pocket. We've talked a lot about keeping our families safe online, so it seems like an ideal time to talk about how easy it is to shop with your smart phone. The apps securely store payment information and utilize near-field communication, or NFC, to offer wireless payment through a merchant's payment terminal. Many of you are already using these apps, as a recent U.S. Cellular survey found that 47 percent of smart phone users manage or monitor their finances on their devices. These apps make it easy to track your purchases and it's easy to make payment with your device.

There are three major apps that you can use anywhere they are on U.S. Cellular's national network:

APPLE PAY:

Apple recently said it expects to have Apple Pay acceptance at more than 1.5 million U.S. Locations by the end of 2015. You can set up Apple Pay through the Passbook app on your Apple device such as the new iPhone 6, and payment can be completed by placing the device near the stores' register.

Apple Pay automatically connects the phone when near the NFC reader and requires a fingerprint scan to authorize the transaction. Apple Pay can also make payment online or within other apps.

GOOGLE WALLET:

For Android phone owners, Google Wallet can link multiple cards or bank accounts to an account which is accessed by a four digit pin.

Like Apple Pay, Google Wallet offers a tap-and-pay option to use in-store. Google Wallet can also be used in the Google Play store, within apps and online wherever a "Buy with Google" Button is found. In addition, Google Wallet can store customer loyalty cards from favorite stores ensuring users never out on a deal.

SAMSUNG PAY:

Samsung Pay is available on the latest Samsung devices such as the Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy Note 5, and it uses NFC technology as well as magnetic transmission, making it compatible at almost all stores in the United States.

Most credit card holders are all able to link their cards and accounts to Samsung Pay.

Shopping this holiday season has never been easier. Head to your favorite store with your smart phone in tow and your purchases will be the simplest ever!

So.. tell me- Are you using any of these apps on a regular basis to make payment or are you waiting to try them out?

To Cancel or Not.... What's a School To Do?

OK~ Here in North Iowa we have been under a winter storm warning for the past 12 hours. And this is the view in my yard.

The grass is crunchy, visibility is fine and yes, you do need to use your winter driving skills. Living in Iowa, an average day from November- April, requires winter driving skills.

We did have a foot of snow 10 days ago, which has all melted and brought the green grass back to life. I can tell you that I would not want to be the person making the call to cancel or not cancel school on days like today. Common sense tells me that if the National Weather Service has put out a winter storm warning, kids should not be out and about. Schools all across North Iowa are closed today due to the impending storm, including our local school district.

Through the years that our boys were in school, there were times they did not make it home. The school waited too long to dismiss them from school. Visibility was zero and/or the highway to get them home was closed. So, on to plan B. And that was to find a teacher's home or friend's home for them from the night. Now, did I call the school up and complain? Nope.... I let it slide and did rant a little, but realized there was nothing I could do. Our boys were safe and that's what counted.

I am pleased to see that school districts are being proactive today all across the state of Iowa. Some areas of the state are getting blasted with snow and the powers that be tell us, that this storm is still on its way.

I can recall as a child, years ago, that my Dad would come to the school to pick us up when he knew it would be hard for the school bus to get us home. Reality is that in today's school climate, is the fact that it's not easy to pull your kids out of school for family reasons. There was that time a few years back when we had to do that with our boys, due to a death in the family, and they had unexcused absences.

What are parents supposed to do? Make the best of it.... kids are only in school a few years of their lives. An extra hour baking cookies, playing outdoors or even playing a board game is usually a good solution. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The camera is durable, versatile and is able to be mounted for your explorer that is always on the move. It has features that include a 1.4 inch color LCD screen, video capture, photo capture, three built-in games, stop motion, time lapse options and is also able to connect to your computer. The built-in rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery and expandable memory mean that it is ready whenever you are. They can even personalize their photos with photo frames and filters. Your kids will love that the camera is so easy to use that they can do it themselves. They can capture anything from a bike ride, skateboarding adventure or even a day at the pool. The Action Cam includes a waterproof case that is able to capture it all! Go ahead and mount it to their helmet or even the end of their skateboard. It can even be taken underwater. Use this camera in more ways than you ever thought
were even possible.

Wherever your little explorer wants to go, the Action Cam is the sidekick that they have been wanting. All of the accessories that it comes with just make it all that much better. The Action Cam comes with a flat mount, waterproof case, wrist strap, micro-USB cable, bike mount and a mounting shell. A microSD card is recommended to capture more and can hold up to 32GB of expandable memory, but that is all that is not included. You are ready to roll out on you first adventure as soon as you can secure the camera to catch the action. Share your moments with friends and family by downloading your videos and pictures that you take to your computer. You can also join the Action Cam Community and use #kidventure when you post any of your memories on social media. Let your adventures be seen! There is no adventure that your child can go on that is too small to share.

Tech Items For Your Holiday Shopping List #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 15+ years.

OK~ The holidays are around the corner and you are probably wondering how to keep your family safe online and what the hottest tech accessories this season are. Many tweens and teens will be receiving their first cellular device this holiday season. Anytime parents invest money in their kids, it's of the utmost importance that they are protected. U.S. Cellular's Parent/Child Agreement is a must when it comes to keeping your family safe online. With more and more people using cellular devices, this holiday season is the ideal time to invest in accessories to help use these devices in a smarter way.

Did you know that 38% of smart phone users, play games on their smart phones daily? I am not one of these people, but I do know that many people do. Now, I can be included in the statistic of 49% using their smart phones to check the latest news. I can also be included in the 14% that use the GPS on their smart phones. I honestly thought more than 14% would use it for GPS, as this service can be a great way to navigate when I am in unfamiliar territory.

Cellular devices are fun to use and they are even more fun when you can have some exciting accessories to use. Here's a fun list of tech items for your holiday shopping list.

OTTERBOX COMMUTER CASE ($39.99)

With defense against drops, dust and scratches, along with two layers of protection, the Otterbox Commuter Case is sleek enough to place in your pocket, while protecting against the elements. This case makes a great gift for everyday use or for the adventurer in your life.

BELKIN WEMO INSIGHT SWITCH ($59.99)

Ideal for the person on your list looking to simplify their life, the Insight Switch connects your home electronics to your Wi-Fi network, allowing you to turn them on and off from anywhere using your phone or tablet. It can also put your home electronics on a schedule as well as monitor your energy usage and send information to your phone or tablet,

PARROT ROLLING SPIDER DRONE ($99.99)

For the fun- loving adult or child on your list, the Parrot Rolling Spider is an ultra-compact drone controlled by your smart phone. It flies indoor and outdoors with speed and stability, and you can take photos with its vertical camera simply by hitting the "photo" icon in the accompanying app on your smart phone screen. Its detachable wheels make it easy to roll from the floor to the ceiling.

SAMSUNG GEAR S2 ($349.99)

Perfect for the health conscious person on your list who wants to stay connected, the Gear S2 makes it easy to take charge of your health while staying up to date on what is important to them. The Gear S2 monitors daily activities, counts your steps, and measures your pulse, as well as your water vs. caffeine intake. In addition to answering calls and texts, the Gear S2 also makes it easy to read an email, check out a map, listen to music or access your favorite apps, right from your wrist.

With my U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, it's very easy to shop for the hot accessories for cellular devices this holiday season. It's not only convenient, but also very easy to use with the reliable high speed network that U.S. Cellular has to offer. Are tech items on your shopping list this holiday season? If so, I'd love to hear what items your are shopping for! It's an exciting time to be shopping for tech items. But most importantly, invest in online safety for your family. Be aware of where your kids are going online and be involved in the usage of their cellular devices. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#Ag Chat Community Unites In Nashville

OK~ I recently had the opportunity to travel to Nashville, Tennessee and meet up with several #AgChat friends. I connected with this online community several years ago. When I hopped on Twitter several years ago, I struggled to find folks that were talking about Iowa, agriculture and anything that I could relate to. It is no secret that it has taken Iowans a few years to hop on the Twitter train. I was excited when I found the #AgChat community. These were farmers that were passionate about their jobs and loving life. And those of you that know me in real life, know that I am passionate about Iowa and sharing through social media.

Iowa attendees at #AgChat Conference-2015

My biggest takeaway from the #AgChat Conference was that I was reminded that everyone has a story and it's very important to listen to them share their story. A person can learn so much by listening and not talking. Do you recall the last time you had a conversation with a farmer? Those conversations do matter, as Americans are more in tune with their food and where it comes from. If you have a question about your food, where do you turn? Seriously, ask a farmer. Farmers will be honest and open with you. They want to share their story with you. By listening, both parties can learn from each other.

You can find the folks of #AgChat on every type of social media platform out there. There are some farmers that enjoy sharing their story through video, so you may find them on YouTube. Other growers love sharing through Instagram. If you want to find several of these folks, just key in the hashtag #AgChat and you will find yourself connected. If you have any questions about why they do what they do, ask! Farmers want to answer your questions and they want to get to know you.

I know that social media is a great opportunity to learn about anything and everything. I am not sure why we, as a society, have gotten to the point that we all have to be so careful how we word everything. I wish that people could put the human side in everything they do, as opposed to throwing out nastiness and words that do hurt. Before you point fingers at a farmer for doing things a certain way, please ask.

My family has farmed for several years and I can tell you that we are all very proud to produce food. It's nice to know that farmers, in my neighborhood, are feeding the world. Without our farmers, many more folks would go hungry.

My challenge to each of you is to ask a farmer a question. If you wonder why they do what they do, don't assume, ASK! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
