My Thoughts:

What a great light for all kinds of emergencies. We keep a flashlight in our glove box or by the front door. This powerful little light only requires AAA batteries and it's 3 in 1 design makes is so much more versatile than our old ones that take those huge c batteries. Forgetting to turn off the radio the other night we had to hook up jumper cables and of course I brought out my new light and attached it to the hood of the truck to see what I was doing. The magnetic base made it stick easily leaving my hands free to clip on the cables. I am very happy with this light and will be getting another one soon to put in my hurricane kit.

Here in the Midwest tornado season is upon and this is a handy light to have on hand!

Wi-Fi On A School Bus, Really?

OK~ It's no secret that I am a lover of technology. I love the fact that we have a generation of kids that have an opportunity to connect in ways we have never connected. What I don't like is the fact that we, as a society, are failing our kids when it comes to technology.

I would love to know why our schools are not focusing on educating our kids on how to use these devices from an educational point of view? I shake my head when a ten year old says, "My teacher didn't care that we were on our phones." Problem #1 is the fact that a ten year old does not need a smart phone in the class room unless it is being used for a classroom assignment.

And then I read an article on how school districts in Iowa are considering installing wi-fi on school buses. What on earth? Here in Iowa we continually cut staff, cut programs and yet we consider wi-fi for school buses. I am perplexed and I seriously wonder where our priorities are. Something tells me there won't be an adult on the bus to supervise these kids while they surf the world wide web.

I love technology and I love the fact that our kids have an opportunity to use these devices. My friend Stacey Honowitz is a twenty-two year veteran of the Florida State Attorney's Office, with seventeen years dedicated to the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit where is currently serving as a supervisor will be the first to tell you that parents and teachers need to be in the know. Children's sex crimes are the fastest growing crimes in America and we want to turn our kids lose with wi-fi on a school bus- seriously? And she will be the first to ask you, " Do you really need to post that photo?"

One may argue that many kids do ride the school bus for long periods of time. To the best of my knowledge there are state laws that need to be followed and maybe need to be re-evaluated. Using a $650 mini-computer, as a babysitter, for kids to have access to the world wide web on the school bus is not the answer. It could be argued that kids will be there anyway, maybe through the parent's cell phone provider.

I have a feeling that the three families that I recently dealt with in regards to vine and snapchat will be on the same page I am. I would love for one parent to show me how their child is using vine in a responsible manner, as I had a hard time finding anything good when I had to sift through these accounts for parents. And these parents wait to see where the inappropriate videos will show up on the world wide web.

We have a crisis on our hands when it comes to our kids using social media. Parents need to step up their game and be on the social media platforms their kids are using. A lot of parents will tell me, "I am on Facebook." I think to myself, So! Your kids are probably not, because you are.

For now I will wait and seriously hope our local school districts in Iowa will really dig deep to see how important wi-fi is on a school bus. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Summer Travel Just Got Easier With Travel Tips From U.S. Cellular #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Brigade Program,  I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 15+ years.

OK~ Since savvy moms are beginning to plan their families' summer vacations, I thought it would be a good time to share some apps and devices that can make traveling a little easier.

Family is what makes travel so special. There is nothing like planning a family vacation, whether is is immediate family or your extended family. However, managing logistics can often cause unwanted stress. Fortunately, there are a growing number of apps and accessories that travelers can use with their mobile devices, such as the 4G LTE iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2, to streamline nearly every aspect of travel while improving the experience as well as saving time and money. We have some tips for you!

PLANNING YOUR TRIP

Did you know that 68 percent of smartphone owners have used their smartphone to assist them while traveling, according to a recent U.S. Cellular survey? I can tell you, that I use my smartphone all the time to make travel plans. Three common booking apps that I use regularly include:

Expedia
Orbitz
Kayak.

When searching for car rentals, flights, and/or lodging, these apps will serve you well. Here's another interesting statistic that is really picking up steam. Did you know that a recent U.S. Cellular survey found 27 percent of smartphone owners have booked a hotel room directly from their smartphone and 16 percent have purchased airline tickets? I can also tell you that these apps often offer discounts when you book through your app, as I speak from experience.

EN ROUTE

Ever been that person fumbling at the ticket counter for your confirmation number? Go paperless with Gate Guru, which organizes your full travel experience- from flight and rental vehicle information, to airport amenities.

IN-FLIGHT

With more than 10 hours of battery life and up to 128 gigs of memory, the lightweight iPad Air 2 makes a perfect travel companion for reading, listening to music, watching movie or playing games. Plus you can create your own in-flight oasis with a pair of noise cancelling urBeats-In-Ear Headphones designed for music lovers who don't want to sacrifice sound or style.

ON THE GROUND

Upon arriving at your destination, you'll want to look like a local. The Around Me app shows nearby restaurants, banks and more (including hospitals or emergency care centers for anyone traveling with an accident prone family member, including directions to your destination. While you're enjoying your vacation, Postagram keeps you in touch with loved ones. Just take a photo with the app, and for a nominal fee your message will be delivered as a mailed postcard.

AFTER THE TRIP

Crate an album of your favorite vacation photos on our phone so you have them on-hand any time you want to show them off or remind yourself how great your family trip was.

And as always, be sure you have the Parent Child Agreement App installed on the smartphones that your children are using. You can never be to careful when it comes to the safety of your children at home and while away.

Enjoy our summer travel and be sure to pack a little bit of patience and remember to pack your cell phone chargers! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Five Reasons You Should Call North Iowa Home

OK~ I have called North Iowa home all of my life. People often ask me what it's like to live in Iowa. Well, I do tell them that there are a lot of open spaces here and we do have fresh air to breathe.

Having traveled more the past couple years I can tell you that I love being in the Mid-West as
it gives me great opportunity to travel North, South, East, and West and cover a lot of diverse areas. And the beauty of my travel? I can return home to quiet.

So I've been thinking. Here are my top five reasons as to why you should call North Iowa home:

  1. North Iowa is home to several great parks. East Park in Mason City, in particular, is clean, family friendly and offers a nice variety of activities. From fishing to the Cannonball 457, East Park makes for a great family day. Just a year ago, my parents hosted a family reunion in East Park and several attendees from out of state commented how blessed Mason City was to have such a nice park.
  2. The architecture is very cool! I do realize that for some people cool architecture is not their thing. Let me tell you, Mason City is lucky to have the Frank Lloyd Properties all around town. The Park Inn Hotel is the last known hotel that is still standing in the world that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. That is a pretty cool fact!
  3. Buddy Holly brings a lot of smiles to North Iowa. A visit to the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake with a visit to the Buddy Holly crash site will provide music and memories. The SurfBallroom has a lot of concerts throughout the year, and if you are lucky you will get to see a current musical artist perform in this legendary setting.
  4. Wide open spaces. Yes, we have a lot of wide open spaces in North Iowa that are not concrete jungles. Think about it! North Iowa is blessed to have many lush corn and soybean fields for six months out of the year. And once harvest rolls around, here in North Iowa we are very appreciative of our farmers and the work that they do to feed our world.
  5. North Iowa is also home to "Pilot Knob" State Park near Forest City. This is the second highest point in Iowa which offers hiking trails, fishing, horse riding trails, picnic areas, birding, camping and tons of other outdoor activities.

Clear Lake, Iowa

And you know what, this list could go on and on. There's really no reason to plan to travel out of state for a 4th of July Celebration, as Clear Lake, Iowa is home to one of the top 4th of July Celebrations across the whole United States!

I will admit it, selling North Iowa to a youngster in today's world can be tough. On the bright side, North Iowa is located 1/2 ways between Des Moines and Minneapolis with a 2 hour drive either way. For those wanting the more city like experiences, it's a short drive.

North Iowa is my home and will continue to be. My life is not hopping with lots of concrete, a lot of stop lights, or high rise hotels on a day to day basis. It's nice to explore other areas of the country and return to my peaceful road in rural America. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Introducing You To New Colgate® Optic White® PLATINUM™ Express White Toothpaste

OK~ I'm always looking for the next best thing when it comes to toothpaste. I don't like going to the dentist to get my teeth whitened so if I can find a toothpaste off the shelf in the store, it's a win, win for me. The good folks over at Colgate-Palmolive sent me a sample of the new Colgate® Optic White® Platinum™ Express White Toothpaste to sample. They also sent me a Colgate® 360 ® Optic Whiter® Platinum™ Manual Toothbrush to accompany this new toothpaste.

I have used Colgate® Whitening Toothpaste before and had really good luck with it. This new toothpaste seemed to whiten my teeth even more. The product information states that you should notice a difference within 2 days and I would say that's a fairly accurate statement. This new toothpaste contains 2x more of the whitening ingredient, Hydrogen Peroxide vs. Optic White® Sparkling Mint®.

Combining this toothpaste and toothbrush did give me a brighter smile in a short period of time. When brushing the stain removers work with your toothpaste to help effectively remove surface stains for a naturally whiter smile. The unique polishing bristles help to whiten teeth by polishing away surface stains and clean hard to reach areas.

From a pricing standpoint, it's much cheaper then heading to the dentist's chair in my opinion. A 4.5 oz tube retails between $5.79-$6.99. That size of a tube will last for a few weeks, depending on how many people are using the tube.

Overall, I'd say this is a win, win for anyone looking for a brighter smile. Colgate® Optic White® PLATINUM™ Express white toothpaste knocks the competition out of the park. You can purchase this toothpaste in food and drug stores nationwide. In fact, I noticed it for purchase yesterday in my local Walgreen's Store.

Do you like to try new toothpastes or are you always buying the same brand? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

North Iowa Bloggers #PizzaTasteOff2015

OK~ So the North Iowa Bloggers had an Epic Pizza Tasting Get Together! The event was tagged the #NorthIowaBloggers #PizzaTasteOff2015, which of course equals EPIC! Anytime the North Iowa Bloggers get together the event is epic. Remember the Lay's Potato Chip get together and the awesome Oreo tasting?  It is fair to say that the North Iowa Bloggers have introduced people to flavors of Oreos that many did not know existed. So, the epic #PizzaTasteOff2015 was, of course, a huge success!

Full Disclosure: Caseys, Kum & Go, Godfather's (Mason City) donated pizzas for this epic event. The Udi's Gluten Free Margherita Pizza and pizza from Pasta Bella in Mason City were purchased by the bloggers of the group.

So... we had the following to choose from! Now be thinking- what do you think your favorite would be? And here's one table all lined up and ready to roll with the #PizzaTasteOff2015.

  • Kum and Go Breakfast Pizza
  • Kum and Go Taco Pizza
  • Kum and Go Sausage, Mushroom, Onion and Black Olive Pizza
  • Udi's Gluten Free Margherita Pizza
  • Godfather's Chicken, Bacon and Ranch Pizza
  • Godfather's Combo Pizza
  • Casey's Hamburger Pizza
  • Casey's Cheese Pizza
  • Pasta Bella Margherita Pizza
I had no idea that Kum and Go served Breakfast Pizza and I must tell you, it was really good! With so many awesome pizzas to choose from, we all had to put our taste buds to work. And you know, when bloggers gather there's also a whole lot of tweeting taking place.

Our evening was filled with fun and laughter and of course pizza. We were missing Amy, as she always brought additional life to the party! I could not help but try to remember that she was there in spirit with us. After all, Donna is getting pretty good at using her selfie stick, don't you think?

Photo courtesy of: Donna Hup of DonnaHup.Com

Donna has done a fabulous job at embracing the selfie stick, as Amy was our selfie stick person up until we said our final good-byes.

And the winner was.......... Pasta Bella's Margherita Pizza! This was my #1 choice so I was rather delighted that the whole group chose this pizza. I am not a fan of thick crust pizzas and Pasta Bella offers a nice thin crust. The sauce on Pasta Bella's pizza is a little sweet, but not too sweet, it's just right!

In case you are curious, this is how we voted at this particular tasting event! We may love our social media, but we also love paper and stickers.

And that's a wrap! The #NorthIowaBloggers #PizzaTasteOff2015 was a huge success. Curious as to what happened during our actual gathering? Hop on over to Twitter and search #PizzaTasteOff2015!
Here's a screenshot of a super small sampling of the tweets from the evening.

Do you have a favorite pizza in North Iowa? If so, I'd love to hear about it. With so many more pizza choices, it looks like the North Iowa Bloggers may have to have Round #2 of the #PizzaTasteOff2015. A special thank you to Beth Ann of It's Just Life for hosting!

Moving on... Spring I'm Coming For Ya!

OK~ There's something to be said about having to move the clocks ahead an hour. Morning is pretty dark but I absolutely love the fact that the sky was still red in the West last evening around 7:45 p.m..
Spring is maybe here. I will stress the word maybe, as we still have the month of March ahead of us. In Iowa, March is typically our snowiest month. You know what? My heart will not be broken if we do not see a single snow flake this whole month.

I would love for the snow banks to disappear and for the grass to grow. It's hard to believe that just two days I ago I slipped and fell on the ice. Yes, it was 60 degrees on that day, yet I somehow managed to find a chunk of ice. The snow is melting and the yard is beginning to take shape. In a good month's time, the farmers should be hitting the fields preparing for a new crop.

I am still waiting to see that first robin on my doorstep. Not sure when the robins will arrive with a couple blue jays hanging out on a regular basis. I will patiently wait for the day I look out my kitchen window to see a yard full of robins. Now that, my friends is a sight that I look forward to every single Spring.

I'm not gonna paint a picture that doesn't exist, Winter was tough. It was cold, dark and it was dreary. I personally lost several friends to cancer and/or car accidents which made Winter seem to drag on and on. I am praying that Springtime brings a new sense of life and hope that seemed to have faded away this past Winter.

I will scream with delight when our apple trees bud and then when that first lilac appears, I will be filled with happiness! Those lilacs always bring a sense of calm over me. Spring time I am coming for you and embracing it all. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Social Media and Parenting Is Tough

OK~ The last 10 days of my life have been super crazy and I will admit I am ready for things to calm down a little bit. Just a few weeks ago I was thinking of how smooth things had been going and silently wondering when things would go crazy. Well, it didn't take long for things to go wild.

Through all of the craziness I began to look at social media and looked at how we saw each other. Social media for the most part, I do believe, represents who we are and what we stand for. This then led me to think about how difficult it would be raising kids today with social media. When our boys were little there was no social media. We had actual cameras and had to take the film to a local store to get the film processed into photos. Today, we take photos of our kids eating or playing with our smartphones and  BAM- a whole new world opens up. The comments start coming in and the opinions are all over the place.

"You do know, you should not feed him that."

"That toy was recently recalled, you did see that, didn't you?"

"Why would you take a five year old there?"

These are just some of the things I have seen recently through my Facebook feed. What I take from this is that no matter what you do as a parent today, someone from somewhere will tell you that you are doing it wrong. This would be hard! Social media changes everything. Social media makes parenting even harder in today's world.

What I would love to see is for people to support parents of today. Which means that we do not push an agenda on them and let them parent the way they want. Others may have an opinion, but again, somethings just do not belong on social media. Opinions are opinions, sometimes they are best kept to ourselves.

Safety is a whole other issue. Before you post any picture of any child online, ask yourself how the child will react when they are 15 years old and find that photo online. Will they be proud of the photo you posted or will they be ashamed?

So, the next time I see a Facebook status update with a child eating M & M's, guess what? I will like that post and move on. You will not find this Mom telling another Mom how to parent and feed their child. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Plane Trip To Nowhere

OK~ It's been a long Winter and I'm ready to kick it to the curb. Yesterday I ventured on a plane trip to nowhere. Yep- it was an interesting day. Myself and Laura of Cat Tales With Laura and Beth Ann of It's Just Life were headed to the BAM Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

We traveled to Minneapolis the night before, which turned out to be the wisest move we made throughout this whole adventure. The three of us were looking forward to meeting new people, learning more in regards to the blogging industry and enjoying Nashville, Tennessee. And then Mother Nature decided that Thor needed to appear with a vengeance.

We boarded on time in Minneapolis to head to Kansas City to catch our connecting flight into Nashville, Tennessee. While in air, with our phones on airplane mode, we received text messages that our flight out of Kansas City to Nashville was canceled. Really? This message arrived 10 minutes after our departure out of Minneapolis. Only the airline Gods know why the timing was so interesting in all of this. We saw this message upon landing in Kansas City and knew that a magic wand was going to have to appear.

We got off of our plane and headed to the Southwest Gate Agents desk. And then the news- we can get you to Chicago, Atlanta or you can stay here for standby for Saturday, as there is nothing going today and everything is full tomorrow. Being stuck for two days anywhere was not appealing and the dreaded words "Standby for Saturday" were not exciting either. So... what would you do? The roads to Nashville were a skating rink and Lord knows for how long.

We opted to fly back to Minneapolis and return home for the weekend. We were bummed out that we would not be meeting so many awesome midlife bloggers and enjoying Nashville, Tennessee. The plane trip to nowhere did take me from Minneapolis to Kansas City and back to Minneapolis in one morning!

If there is one thing that I have learned in my 40 something years of life it is the fact that everything we do is controlled by a greater being. For whatever reason, myself, Laura and Beth Ann were not supposed to be in Nashville this weekend. I really don't know why, but I know there is a reason.

It's been a tough 10 days for us North Iowa Bloggers and I'm thinking this is where the tough stops! I am so looking forward to the next conference that comes up to attend with Beth Ann and Laura. We were set to have the time of our lives this weekend and I know more awesome is in our future. So.... I am home with my family making the most out of the weekend that could have been.
