North Iowa Is My Home And I Wish It Would Remain Home To Many Others

OK~ So this has been hanging over my head this past week. I live in North Iowa and this is home to me. I also understand that we live in a society where people move a lot. One thing that I have noticed more and more in the area that I live in, is that people move in and are very excited. Within 2-5 years, they find that North Iowa is not offering the amenities that other locations are offering. And then the announcement happens. They have found a job in another area of the country where they will not have to travel to experience the cultural experiences that we do not have here in North Iowa. They have also found a job with more pay and an opportunity to advance. What they may fail to disclose is a higher cost of living. But, in the grand scheme of things, their individual wants and needs do matter.

I will admit, I am a little partial to the Park Inn Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Mason City! The holidays are a little extra special, don't you agree?

So... my mind spins. What are some things that we need to be offering here in North Iowa? Just yesterday I took a stroll through our downtown and sadly I don't think it's much different than other Main Streets across the United States. We have a lot of bare store fronts. The other thing, there were maybe 10 people within a two block radius. To the best of my knowledge for a business to be successful, you have to have people around. How often do you venture out in your downtown area?

And my mind continued to spin. What if we could offer opportunities and experiences that people want in todays fast paced world? I wrote about this topic a few months ago, but yesterday it really hit home. We have a lot of entrepreneurs looking to find their space here in North Iowa. These empty store fronts could be filled with a place for entrepreneurs and forward thinking people to call home. Now, I'm not sure how it could all come together, but I know there is someone out there that will "get" this.

We do have a lot of things in the hopper here in North Iowa, it's just that many are not wanting to wait around to see where these things go. It is true that it takes a lot of people with a vision to make things happen. We have people willing to make some changes and move forward in our community. So... tell me, why do you live where you do? And is relocating something that you take lightly or do you put the for sale sign up and move on?

I do worry about the future of our communities here in North Iowa. We are an aging population, myself included. We do not have young children in our home, our boys are young adults now. Just a few nights ago I was dining with my parents at a local eatery and you know what? Every table in the restaurant was filled with older folks that traveled South for the Winter, just like my parents do. They are home in Iowa for the summer and spending money in our communities. And yes, I do hope to be like them in a few years! The Iowa Winters are not something I favor.

Highlights of where I live:

  • Clean water
  • Fresh Air
  • Open spaces

  • Traffic is light
  • Family lives nearby
These five things, in my opinion, make North Iowa a great place to call home. So.. what determines where you call home? I'd love to hear about it. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

When People Of All Ages Work Together Something Magical Happens- Seriously, It Does!

OK~There's something to be said about organizations that involve people of all ages. It is true that here in North Iowa we have a wonderful group of bloggers that support each other day in and day out. I often joke that, "We get along better than the ladies in the church kitchen." Honestly, we do!

The North Iowa Bloggers are men and women in their 20's, 30's ,40's, 50's, and 60's. I'm sure hoping we find a blogger in their 70's to join us soon, as that would give us another age group. We all have our own writing styles, voices, yet we all love to write and share through social media. We work on projects together and we also each do our "own" thing. I truly believe that when a mix of people are tossed together with a common interest something special blooms.

Just a couple nights ago I was at the local gun club with our 20 year old son and my husband. They were shooting clay targets on their team for the season. I looked around and you know what? The cool thing about the gun club was the fact that there were youth, parents, grandparents, which meant people of all ages all around. If you have never set food at a gun club, you would not understand how genuine and friendly the people are that frequent the club.

I found myself comparing the gun club to our North Iowa Bloggers group. Both groups of people included people of all ages and people were having fun and getting along. Maybe it's just an Iowa thing, but you know what? I think it's pretty cool that I could find two groups of people right here in North Iowa making a difference in the lives of many. Our son has met many people, that are many years older than him, at the gun club and he calls them friends. They lend an ear when needed and they are there to support each other.

I am sure there are many other groups in North Iowa and all around the country that offer friendships and a support system just like my family and I have found in North Iowa. If you are not finding something like this where you call home. I challenge you to be that person- start a club that involves something you are passionate about and take it and run with it. I know you will be pleasantly surprised at the friendships and blessings you will receive along the way. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tips On Keeping Your Tween (Kids) Busy This Summer

OK~ What's a parent to do? The end of the school year is upon us. I am seeing that many parents are really challenged with what to do with their tweens over the summer. They are too old for daycare, yet they really don't need a babysitter 24/7, so what is a parent to do?

I did a little digging around on this topic today and you know what the best solution I could come up with was? Your local YMCA and Parks and Recreation Departments are a fantastic place for tweens to spend summer. Depending on your particular area, some offer programs geared toward tweens; but most offer programs for younger kids and allow tweens to volunteer. Let's face it, tweens can be excellent role models for 5 and 6 year olds. These are the "big" kids!

Our boys each spent 2-3 weeks at different types of summer camps throughout the years. Our oldest son was a volunteer at church camp for three summers- ages 12, 13 and 14. This kept him busy volunteering for one week out of the summer. The other two he spent attending church camp and another week was spent at Boy Scout Camp. And then he also had Music Camp. There are camps available for tweens all around, just ask.

I often hear, "I can' afford that." My response, "Ask about scholarships. Many organizations have scholarships available for those that can't afford to pay." I can recall a conversation with someone a few years ago in regards to church camp, and we had two scholarships for campers. We could not find two kids to fill the spots. My message here is..... ASK!!!!! There are often people willing to assist financially in keeping our youth busy over the summer.

I will also add, if you can volunteer as a parent to accompany your kids on any camping programs they attend, do it. I do not regret one moment of all of those nights camping under the stars in those Cub/Boy Scout tents with our boys. The years flew by- many fond memories and smiles!

In Iowa our kids have a lot of opportunity to help out in the agriculture industry. Ask around, a farmer often has "odd" jobs that are perfect for tweens. Hey, I spent many hours picking up rocks and I can honestly say that it did not hurt me. I got lucky, as I never dropped a big one on my toes.

The next time you hear someone complain about what their tweens, or kids in general will be doing this summer, encourage them to reach out to local community organizations. There are scholarships, opportunities to volunteer and just plain old GOOD experiences awaiting our kids in our local communities. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

About the Kinderfeets Balance Bike
The Kinderfeets is designed by a Dutch designer living in California. He originally made this bike for his son because what he wanted was not available. So what makes the Kinderfeets Balance Bike different than the other wooden balance bikes? It is the only wooden balance bike on the market with a footrest strategically positioned where pedals would normally be. It has an adjustable, washable, cushioned seat and a low step through frame to accommodate the youngest balance bike rider. It also comes with no air no maintenance biodegradable tires.
Ok, we saved the best for last....the frame is painted in a chalkboard finish! How cool is that! Your child can decorate this bike any way they choose.
Eco Friendly
Ok, so I was not totally truthful. There's another cool feature that is even better that the chalkboard finish. This bike is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. The Kinderfeets Balance Bike is handmade with the wood from fast growing birch trees. Every tree used to create a Kinderfeets Bike is replanted! And they are not done! The wheels are biodegradable.

Parents Are Caught In The MIddle When It Comes To Parenting In Today's World

OK~ There's something to be said about kids riding the school bus and being respectful. I see story after story of kids that do not behave while riding the school bus. And then yesterday, I came across a news story that stated a bus driver in Quebec had told a girl to put away her book as it posed a threat to others. Seriously? I thought this was a joke. But then when people started talking about it on social media, I quickly learned that many school districts do not allow kids to read books while riding the school bus. And you ask why? A book poses a threat of injury to themselves or others.

I am now looking at a magazine that I plan to read this week while flying on an airplane. Will this pose as a threat too? What on earth is going on here? We want our kids to be the best they can be and to get the best education they possibly can, and then we tell them books are not appropriate on a school bus. I read a lot of books through the years while riding the school bus to and from school. I don't recall that myself or others were ever injured from an actual book. I do recall kids being injured from the fist of another student on the bus, which brings me to the point. Where does this stop? To the best of my knowledge, the fists of kids will always accompany a student on a school bus. With 77 students to monitor (some less, some more) a bus driver has his hands full. A book in hand sounds like a reasonable way to keep kids occupied.

Parents are seriously caught in the middle of all of this chaos. They don't dare let their kids walk 100 feet from them or they fear a police officer will intervene. When my boys were younger, I would often give them money to order their own food at a fast food restaurant. I would step back and let them go ahead to order. This taught them how to talk to other people and exchange money in a store setting. They also quickly learned to speak up for a "special order" or how to engage in a positive way, if the order was incorrect.  Looking back at this, in today's world, someone would have probably called the police on my boys as their Mom was not right next to them.

I am all about technology in the classroom, but I fear that this no book rule on the school bus will lead to more cyberbullying and issues in general on the school bus. Does your school district have a rule about kids reading actual books on the school bus? If so, I'd love to hear about it. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
