Paying It Forward In Your Community Makes A Difference

OK~ I am truly blessed, as over the course of the last week I have witnessed a couple great ways people are paying it forward. I am truly blessed to be part of the awesome staff of  World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. The auctioneers that attend auction school are truly some of the nicest, most genuine and caring people I have ever met.

The February 2015 graduates literally paid it forward this past week. One student in the June 2015 term received a $700 scholarship from the February 2015 graduates. This group of auctioneers also raised enough money to give two auctioneers a one year memberships to the NAA (National Auctioneers Association).

Now that my friends, is paying it forward. It's so fun to see a group of auctioneers believing in others, which could very well be their competition. When people work together magic happens. I continue to see this over and over again.

And then, at our North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club in North Iowa, Pat Palmer- The Computer Guy paid it forward by giving away a $50 Gift Certificate to Butcher's Steakhouse in Mason City. Pat had been the recipient of rib-eye steaks that Laura of Life On Skyview had given away the month before.

There's a lot of truth to be said that when you surround yourself with people you want to be like, you become that person. I can only hope that I can continue to give to others, as so many folks here in North Iowa continue to bless me day in and day out.

North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Attendees recently participated in the Milk Mustache Challenge that the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank is holding in North Iowa through June 30, 2015.

Go ahead... Show your "stache" on social media and donate here! It's all for good fun and a simple way to pay it forward.

So....... what will you pay forward? I challenge you to make a difference and as Beth Ann Chiles of It's Just Life says, "Be The Ripple"! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Visit Goodwill Today To Help Create Jobs By Donating

Disclosure: I am writing on behalf of the Ad Council.

OK~ I have been busy cleaning out closets this week and I just returned from a haul to my local Goodwill Store. I had three sacks just like this one.

Did you know that when you donate to Goodwill you help create jobs?  Thanks to the programs and support service made possible by donations of clothes and household items, more than 261,000 people earned jobs in 2013- that's one person find a job every 27 seconds of every business day. So you're literally donating your stuff AND helping create jobs. I don't know about you, but this makes me feel good.

Currently Goodwill is focusing on a campaign called, "Donate stuff. Create jobs." This whole campaign makes my donation today a little sweeter. It's always a good feeling when I can help make a difference.

Are you curious as to how your local donations impact your community? Introducing you to Goodwill's Impact Donation Calculator. Simply input the number of items you are donating to calculate the number of hours of career counseling, on-the-job training, resume preparation, financial planning classes, and other services you have helped provide someone facing challenges to finding employment. Just yesterday we discussed ways to be nice to one another, so it's fitting to be sharing an easy way for you to give back to your community.

The beauty of utilizing my local Goodwill store is the fact that I can go back in a week or so to shop. I love taking a day now and then to check out what's available at my local Goodwill store. You never know what find of the day will be in the store. It is a fact: One man's junk, is another man's treasure. That saying resonates with me every time I visit my local Goodwill store.

I challenge you to visit your local Goodwill store. You will not only find a treasure, but you will also help people keep jobs. To me, that's a win, win! With a new school year around the corner, now is the perfect time to start scoping the shelves at your local Goodwill store. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Simple Ways To Be Nice To Others

OK~ I'm thinking about the word nice. When was the last time you experience someone being nice to you? In the world we live in today, we often get caught up in the online chaos and forget about those nice things that we can do for others. It used to be we surfed the "net" looking up a specific item or business. Today, for many, surfing the "net" is all about social media. One of the easiest ways to be nice to someone on social media is to wish someone a happy birthday through a social media platform. Many social media platforms let you know when someone has a birthday. Why not wish someone a happy birthday? In my opinion, this is one simple way to be nice to someone in your life.

When is the last time you listened to someone talking to you? Sometimes all others need is an ear. Be that ear and you will find yourself blessing the life of another. When we take the time to realize, it's not about "me"- life happens! Blessing others by listening to them is a simple way to be nice.

All of you know that I am a social media enthusiast, so why not be nice by visiting the Facebook Business Page of a local business that you love? Maybe you received awesome customer service or are enjoying your purchase. Why not let them know by leaving them a positive note on their page? Now, in my opinion, that's a simple way to be nice.

Send out a card or two. I have made it a habit to send out actual cards for the past few months and I actually find it very rewarding. It feels good to send a happy note to someone. In my opinion, this is a simple way to be nice. I also think my mail lady appreciates the job security, at least I like to think that way. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Reasons Why You And Your Family Should Visit A County Fair

OK~ There are such things as county fairs, all across our awesome country. Many parents that I speak with have no clue as to what happens at a county fair. They often respond with, "My kids won't have a good time."

Iowa has county fairs around every corner. In fact, the Worth County Fair runs June 17th- 21st, 2015. This fair is located in North Central Iowa, near the Iowa/Minnesota border. I have spent a lot of days at county fairs throughout the years and let me tell you, your time spent at one, will be time well spent.

Meet Up With Neighbors

Let's face it. Many of us only have conversations with our neighbors through Facebook, so why not head out to your local county fair and have a real conversation with them? Your kids will enjoy meeting up with neighbor kids while exploring the animal barns.

And of course, there is the food. Who wouldn't enjoy eating a snow cone with a friend on a hot summer like day?

Learn A New Hobby

Check out the 4-H and open class exhibit halls. Here you will find amazing projects and an opportunity to find your new hobby. Maybe photography is something you have been wanting to dabble in. Your county fair is the perfect opportunity to meet some experienced photographers and maybe even learn a trick or two. County fairs are known for having some awesome seminars where you can meet an expert on a specific topic or two. Make that first step, SHOW UP!

Summer Fun

Summer is a time to kick back and relax. Unplug with your family from your technology and visit your local county fair. Here you can meet people, play in the sun, participate in a contest or two.

County fairs often have tractor pulls for adults and kids, hay bale stacking contests, cutest kid contests, and other fun stuff!

Make that first step by getting out the door and unplugging to visit your local county fair. There's summer fun around every corner and it's often right in front of you. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

U.S. Cellular Makes Shopping For Dad Easy In 2015 #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments, Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 15+ years. In fact, I have never been with another cell phone company.

OK~ Father's Day 2015 is quickly approaching and U.S. Cellular can help you find the perfect gift for Dad. Are you a last minute shopper or the plan ahead type? Well, U.S. Cellular can help you out either way!

Dads balance careers, community involvement and spending time with their families; they also have their own hobbies and interests. Fortunately, wireless devices offer ways to simplify and enhance their lives.

Fathers, like everyone else, use smartphones and tablets for an assortment of entertainment purposes. According to a recent U.S. Cellular survey, 55 percent of smartphone owners use the device to watch video, 45 percent listen to music and 61 percent play games. I can tell you this, at our home it's all about the video!

Whether at home or on-the-go, dads can take their wireless devices powered by U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE/high-speed network with them to stay connected. Here are some great gift ideas for your dad on Father's Day.

  • For music loving dads, a one-year subscription to a music streaming service could be packaged with urBeats in-ear headphones or an iHome Crystal Tunes speaker. The subscription service lets dad build playlists of his favorite music, and then listen on-the-go with headphones or at home with the speaker.
  • A tablet, such as the iPad Air 2 with the Watch ESPN app, makes the perfect gift for sports fans. The mobility of the tablet and app ensure dad never misses a game or his favorite sports programming.

  • If your dad is an outdoorsman, the OtterBox defender series case is a the best gift to protect his wireless device during his adventures.
  • Fitness guru fathers will love the iBOLT Universal Bike Handlebar mount and case. It attaches to the bike, and the dock includes a slot for headphones. How cool is this for an active father? I personally think these health fitness options are awesome that U.S. Cellular has to offer for Father's Day. Another health-focused gift option is a wearable fitness device, such as the Jawbone UP24 that keeps track of physical activity and rest.

As you can tell there is no shortage of Father's Day gifts with U.S. Cellular. Create those Better Moments as you celebrate Father's Day 2015. To be sure you and your family are all celebrating Better Moments this Father's Day, be sure to keep your kids and grandkids safe with the child/protection agreement app that U.S. Cellular offers. Be safe, be smart and enjoy Father's Day 2015 with your Dad! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Ideas To Make Summertime 2015 Memorable For Your Family

OK~ School is out for the summer all around us here in North Iowa. Today I noticed several kids out and about literally "running the streets." So, I thought I would share some ideas on how to keep your kiddos busy this summer. The beauty of all of these things is the fact that these activities don't take a lot of money and it will help build relationships in families.

  • Go Fishing! Fishing licenses are not required for kids under the age of 16. Free Fishing Days in Iowa are June 5-7, 2015, which is for everyone.  Parents will want to purchase a fishing license, as parents can be fined (when free fishing days are not held) for putting a worm on a child's hook. You can purchase fishing licenses at many local sporting good stores or online.
  • Camp in your backyard. Why not? Kids love to camp, so why not invest in a tent that you can use in your backyard, as well as family camping trips?
  • Hike on a trail in a county park or a state park. Rockford Fossil Prairie and Preserve in Rockford, Iowa offers family fun all day long while hunting for fossils.
  • Host a neighborhood cookout. Invite neighbors to your home for a cookout. Everyone bring their choice of meat and a dish to share. Make sure your grill has lp and/or charcoal ready to go!
  • Libraries all across North Iowa and the U.S. offer family summer friendly reading programs. When is the last time you and your family set foot in the children's room of your public library?
  • Still stumped? Check out Val's Family Summer 2015 Bucket List of Corn, Beans, Pigs and Kids!

In my opinion, there is no reason that any child should be running the streets during the summer months. Communities all across the nation and North Iowa offer opportunities to keep kids busy. When all else fails, why not spend time as a family playing a board game or maybe even breaking out a family movie that has not been viewed for a few months?

Summer activities do not have to be expensive. Let's face it. Kids want attention and they will remember the times you spent with them at the local swimming pool, coaching their t-ball team and even the time you helped them pitch a tent in the backyard.

If you ask our 24 and 20 year old sons they will tell you that they remember all of the days I spent with them at the local swimming pool and all the bicycle rides we went on. I never "dumped" them off at the pool and you know what, they remember that. They met new friends at the pool and you know what? I also met new friends.

So, tell me..... How will you keep your kids busy this summer? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
