August To September Brings Changes

OK~ There's something to be said about going from August to September. Once the calendar actually says September, I always have to think, "Really, where did summer go?" We still technically have a few weeks of summer, but the days are getting shorter, which I am not a fan of and the night time temps are often cooler.

The new school year has been underway in a few communities around us, but it's this week when everyone hits the books for the new school year. The streets are less busy during the day when the school year is in session. Come 3 p.m., the streets get busier and families are out and about.

September also means that colorful leaves are to come. If there's one good thing I can say about September is that the trees are colorful. The red, bronze, orange and yellow leaves do make Fall a little more appealing. Our apples are almost ripe and I'm ready to make up some fresh apple crisp. Last year we had a record apple crop, which is maybe why we have a much smaller crop this year.

I am not a master gardener, therefore; apples are somewhat easy to grow, as we have always had at least one apple. It's all up to Mother Nature to work her magic. Tip: When you plant an apple tree, make note what type of apple it is. We did not do this eleven years ago, so our apples are what we "think" they are.

This week will be a season of new beginnings for our older son, as he moves into a different apartment complex. We are excited for him as he begins a new adventure with his beloved cat, Mrs. Claws. From a few boxes to saying goodbye to a place he's so ready to move out of - Can you say the word ROACH? Yep, he's had to deal with them the past couple years and it has not been pretty. So.... cheers to him and his new place.

September 1st will be exciting for our family as he moves into his new place and the rest of us continue with preparing things for cooler weather. I'm so not ready for what follows Fall, but I guess it's coming and I will have to embrace it. And what follows is why I love to travel in the Winter!

The occasional ride in the combine will be fun, as it's always a highlight of Fall. There's nothing like the sight of a crop coming out of an Iowa field and a combine ride with Dad. The Iowa corn crop is coming right along.

After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

So... tell me- what do you enjoy most about the August to September transition?

Stand Up To Bullies In The 2015-16 School Year

OK~ So... we have a new school year in the works and it truly breaks my heart that all forms of bullying have already kicked into high gear. My personal Facebook feed has been filled with all forms of bullying and cyberbullying. Most have sadly ended with young people taking their lives.

Think about this. If you witnessed a young person being beat up by another person would you take action or watch? It's became obvious to me that we have way too many people that want to watch this horrible type of behavior and it makes my stomach turn. We have to talk to our kids and let them know that it is ok to stand up and do the right thing.

A few years ago I was driving my car on a side street near an elementary school. The school day had ended and kids were walking home from school. I came upon a young student walking and noticed an older student pushing the younger student. I watched and noticed that the bigger kid was not letting up. I pulled the car over and noticed that other people were driving by and looking at what was happening and continued driving. I marched out of my car and literally pulled the older student off of the younger student. I then marched both of them into the Principal's office, which was two blocks away. Sadly... I was told, "This happened after school, we cannot help, but will see what we can do." I left.

I have a deep regret today. I should have stayed and made sure action was taken. My gut has told me for several years that both were allowed to leave and that younger student was bullied more and possibly due to my actions. I also wish I would have called the police department, as no child should have to endure what I witnessed.

Bullying is a learned behavior. I challenge parents to step up to the plate and take action! It's not ok for your child to hit or continually push another child. I have seen parents encourage ongoing behavior as such and I don't like it. I can also tell you that our younger son was bullied and by 6th grade, he had, had enough! A fellow student made a derogatory remark to our son about his mom (ME) and our son flattened the kid. This was also the same student that had continually pushed him in the hallway at school. He, of course was suspended for two days, due to no tolerance rules. My husband and I were very proud of him and guess what? He was no longer bullied and thankfully he did not turn into the bully.

So....  How will you make a difference in the 2015- 2016 school year? From experience... I can tell you, that your kids need to be taught to be able to stand up for themselves. If they do not, who will? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tyden Farm No. 6 Offers Fun #Ag Tours In North Iowa

OK~ I recently had the delight of visiting Tyden Farm No. 6 in Floyd County in North Iowa. There are many interesting barns all across the country and I think it's fair to say that North Iowa is home to several AMAZING barns. The hospitality that the owners of Tyden Farm No. 6 offered the North Iowa Bloggers and myself was greatly appreciated. Have you visited Tyden Farm No. 6? If not, I'd say that you should plan to visit soon.

Ted and Judy Pitzenberger are the current owners of Tyden Farm No. 6. Emil Tyden was a man with many great accomplishments. He purchased land in North Central Iowa and built up to eight different farms. Another accomplishment is the fact that he is the founder of 200 patents. How cool is that?

Farm tours are available Mid July-September. Reservations can be made by calling 641-426-5277 or e-mailing the Pitzenbergers here.

Want to see the inside of a massive barn? Here ya go!

The tour itself is very personalized. Ted and Judy are engaging and will answer all of your questions. Their tours are family friendly. On the particular tour I was on, there were several children who had a lot of fun. Kids activities were planned for the tour, which made for a fun experience for everyone.

If you are a Iowa history buff, Tyden Farm No. 6 is a MUST! If you love barns and maybe follow the #barnsofinstagram, this is your place.

The museum was informative and very interesting! The gardens were fabulous and each garden area had its own theme. From Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz to the Deer in the Garden, Tyden Farm No. 6 has you covered.

So... if you are looking for something new to see in North Iowa, Tyden Farm No. 6 is your go to place! Give the Pitzenbergers a call and "like" Tyden Farm Tour No. 6 on Facebook to keep up with all the happenings around the farm. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#SPONSORED: The #MixifyTour Was A Huge Hit At The 2015 Iowa State Fair

This is a sponsored post. I did receive compensation for this post. As always, opinions are mine and nobody else's.

OK~ Last week several teens gathered at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa and participated in the Mixify Tour. This tour offered fun activities, demonstrations, tips and tools, music and giveaway. And what teen would not enjoy an event like this, right? The purpose of this tour is to educate teens  about the importance of balancing what they eat and drink, while incorporating it into their daily activities.

In case you are wondering what the Mixify Tour is all about, check this out!

The Mixify truck rode in the Iowa State Fair Parade on Wednesday evening and was parked near the Jacobson Exhibition Center for the full Mixify truck experience on Thursday and Saturday. On Friday, the truck moved to the Grand Concourse directly next to the soap box in the center of action, Teen You Tube celebrity Dylan Dauzat was also on site encouraging teens to think about balancing "eat, drink, and do."

It's no secret that Iowa parents and teens are busier than ever before and finding balance, especially when it comes to diet and exercise, can be very challenging.

"Iowa parents and their teens are busier than ever before, and finding balance- especially when it comes to diet and exercise- can be a challenge. That's why we're proud to step up and do our part to help support them in a new and unique way with this groundbreaking joint effort from America''s leading beverage companies," said Iowa native Susan Neely, American Beverage Association (ABA) president and CEO. "Mixify encourages teens to be thoughtful about the calories they're consuming- including from beverages- and to be active. We know moms work to achieve this for their families every day and we're taking this message on the road as one way to provide support for their efforts. As an Iowa native, I'm especially proud to culminate our summer tour by bringing our message of balancing what you eat, drink and do to my home state's State Fair to reach thousands of Iowa's teens."

The Iowa State Fair is truly the best, in my opinion, State Fair in the country. I happened to personally visit today and let me tell you- the food was amazing! I think I could eat my way around the Iowa State Fair for a whole week and then some. With a tour like Mixify at the Iowa State Fair, teens and families learned a little more about balancing all of the good foods and drinks we all run into day in and day out.

The 25 foot re-purposed food truck that Mixify turned into a traveling balance billboard is sure to have made a positive impact on teens and families at the Iowa State Fair. Through eating, drinking, fitness, music and social media, teens left the Iowa State Fair a little more balanced. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Five Apps The Outdoor Enthusiast Will Appreciate #BetterMoments #Sponsored

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 15+ years. In fact, I have never been with another cell phone company.

OK~ Having spent a lot of time outdoors this summer, I can tell you that an app can make a difference when it comes to making awesome memories. Apps and smart phones are a great way to get your kids off of the couch and into the great outdoors. Go over to U.S. Cellular's parent/child agreement before you take off into the great outdoors, as this will reassure parents that kids know what is expected out of them when it comes to smart phone usage. I have had a terrific summer in the great outdoors with my Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge, as I have used several of these apps and stayed connected.

U.S. Cellular's high quality network can keep you connected nationwide. This network can also serve as a planner, survival guide, trail map and wildlife guidebook, as well as a tool to call for help in a sticky situation.

Here are some apps to enhance your outdoor experience:

Safety First

The Army Survival Guide App is a great tool for the outdoor enthusiast.

This Android/iPhone compatible app offers information about survival planning and kits, shelters, water and food procurement, firecraft, and much more.

Find Your Way

Recent U.S. Cellular research found that 22 percent of smartphone users use GPS to get directions.

Take advantage of your device's GPS functionality with GaiaGPS, a free app offering the full functionality of a handheld, backcountry GPS unit. Another plus, you can read reports about places.

Be Your Own Guide

The AllTrails app allows users to browse through guides for 50,000 trails across North America, how cool is that?

From hiking, mountain biking to fly fishing, there is often a trail involved. Track your activities with your phone's GPS and easily share your adventures with your friends.

Spot Wildlife

Identify birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, native trees and wildflowers with the National Parks Field Guide App.

This interactive field guide connects users with the wildlife and plants of 200 U.S. National Parks. This app is also packed with information pertaining to information about each national park, such as fees, links and phone numbers.

Boat safely

If your adventure involves boating, check out the official United States Coast Guard App.

This free app provides state boating information, a safety equipment checklist, navigation rules, float plans and more. This app is also a great resource when it comes to weather reports and who to call for help.

One important tip to keep in mind is if you plan to keep your cellular device off while playing in the outdoors. Many experts recommend powering your smart phone up occasionally to drop some digital breadcrumbs that may help search and rescue teams locate you if needed.

Have a great time in the outdoors! These apps are a wonderful resource and will make your outdoor adventures little more memorable. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

If This Photo Could Talk: A Retired Iowa Farmer and The Mountains Speak

OK~ I have been on the road traveling quite a bit the first part of this month and several times it occurred to me, what if pictures could talk? Being a blogger, I tend to run around with a phone or camera taking a lot of pictures. It was fun to see that my Dad had been taking note and really stepped up his game of focusing in on different things when it came to photos.

So, this photo got me thinking, as it really says a lot. My thoughts go like this........

The mountains are saying, "I am vast and am bigger than you!"

My Dad looks to be saying, "Wow- let's get a photo of this!"

And then there is all that green grass down in the valley. What do you think that is saying? I'm thinking that it wants to say to the mountains, "Protect me!"

There's something to be said about standing near the mountains and taking all of this in. Here in Iowa we have cornfields and lots of green this time of year. The mountains offer such a nice variety of color. I can see lots of shades of blues, greens, and white. Those white puffy clouds add a lot to the mystique of the mountains, don't you think?

What impresses me the most about this photo is the fact that my Dad appears to be really focusing in on what he is taking a photo of. Do you think the fact that his daughter is a blogger makes him think about the outcome of his photo? He has watched me take a lot of photos through the years and it was exciting to see him look like he was embracing photography. Not bad for a retired Iowa farmer, huh? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
