Before School Cooking Classes Offer Families An Alternative For Before School Child Care In Winneshiek County

OK~ There's something to be said about communities that are proactive when it comes to providing opportunities and new experiences for families. The Mason City Family YMCA provides a nice variety of activities for families and offers new learning experiences, which happens to be in my back yard. And local..... seems to be 100 miles, you agree on that distance?

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Oneota Community Food Coop in Decorah, Iowa, while on a travel writer's tour with the good folks of Travel Iowa. The Food Co-op started a series of cooking classes for kids, as part of a before school program. Due to the fact that they offer several educational events, it seemed like a perfect fit. As with any community, the challenge seems to be getting the word out.

When I heard that they were offering a before school program for kids, which involves teaching kids how to cook, I was all ears! I am no Martha Stewart, but I can tell you that I am grateful for all of those cooking lessons that 4-H provided me through the years. When kids are part of the preparation process of putting food together, they quickly become interested. The working kitchen is right next door to the actual storefront itself, which makes it an ideal location. Up to date appliances and utensils to complete any food project make this a win-win for any community.

I would love to hear that the before school cooking program through the Oneota Community Food Co-op has a waiting list. Many parents struggle with finding before school childcare during those tween years and this is the ideal place for those tweens to gather. They are surrounded by people that have a passion for food and making a difference in a community.

Maybe it's the fact that kids and parents don't think cooking matters, when in all reality it really does. Who can afford to eat out all the time? Let's face it, it does get rather expensive. And the other thing about a before school cooking class, is the fact that it offers an offline opportunity for kids. Most of you know that I love being online, but I also love the fact that I can step away from it. Many kids today simply never take breaks from social media, which is not a good thing.

Be a proactive parent and find a before school program that will enhance the life of your child. If you live in Winneshiek County, check out the great programs that the Oneota Community Food Co-op has to offer. If you don't see a program on the list that you think would benefit your family, suggest it to the good folks of the coop. They want folks in Winneshiek County to eat healthier and have fun in the kitchen.

Be sure to "like" the Oneota Community Food Co-op on Facebook to stay up to date on what's happening around the Co--op.

So... tell me. Would you enroll your kids in a before school cooking class? I personally think it's a genius idea! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Farming Is A Way Of Life, Let's Keep It Honest And Family Friendly

OK~ I've been thinking, we all know that can always be interesting. I read an article in the Des Moines Register that stated Wall Street Investors are Buying Up Farmland. Now, I am not against anyone investing in Iowa farmland. What I am against is the fact that these people have no respect for the local neighbor or local farmer. I have seen this first hand.

Take this for instance....... There is a road on the right, which the farmer at the end of this road needs to access his field. It took more than three years for the county to come out and install posts, so the farmer, that lives hundreds of miles away, can no longer send his employees to plant where ever they choose. The issue I have with this is the fact that there is no respect for the farmer anymore. This continued for three years, until the county finally installed the posts.

In my opinion, landowners should be responsible for knowing where their land is and they should have to show their employees what land they own. So.. this got me thinking. I wonder how often a combine goes into a field that is not the actual land owner's. If these land owners can send employees to plant where ever they choose, what stops them from combining what ever they choose?

We truly live in a "new" atmosphere in the world of agriculture. The face of Iowa is changing very rapidly. Our population is not increasing and it's no secret that we have some of the best farmland in the country. How do we change this? I honestly don't think we can. Investors understand what we have, but we Iowans can no longer afford to purchase what we have.

Many towns no longer have schools or businesses, which makes it a hard sell for people to relocate to Iowa. There are people that long for the peace and quiet that Iowa does offer, we have to find those people! I love to travel and it's fun to travel to exotic, fun, busy places. But, I also appreciate the fact that I can return home to quiet.

I miss the days of having neighbors, even if they were a mile away. Our mile recently changed again, as a grove was taken out, which made for an additional acre of farm land for the farmer. Not a big deal, but it got me thinking. Most people that travel our road today would not know that fifteen years ago there was a family living in a farm house there and they farmed the 80 acres that surrounded the farm house. There are very few farmers that farm 80 acres today, it's simply not feasible. This family raised four kids and lived there many years. In the mile I currently live on, there are currently six of us. Go back twenty years, there were 16 people living on this mile.

And then there is the Pralle Family from North Iowa- this is what farming IS all about.

If you live in Iowa, what are some reasons you continue to live here? My family is nearby, as all of those six in the mile I live in are my relatives. And then you travel another quarter mile, you will find another cluster of my relatives. So... Iowa is all about family! Plain and simple, if you have family in Rural Iowa, you may find yourself rooted in the family farm. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Back To School With Teenage Drivers Made Safer With U.S. Cellular Family Friendly Apps #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 15+ years. In fact, I have never been with another cell phone company.

OK~ There's a new school year upon us and more people take to the road, which includes teen drivers. I remember the day that both of our boys headed out the door as first time drivers to school. I said a prayer as they left and was happy to see them maturing into young men. Our family, of course, had incidents along the way, which made for some hairy times in regards to driving.

Did you know that U.S. Cellular provides a high- quality network and national coverage that keeps customers connected in big and small cities, as well as rural communities? I happen to live in a rural community, and U.S. Cellular meets our families needs, day in and day out. I am also happy to see that U.S. Cellular continues to meet the needs of families with young drivers. Five years ago when our youngest started driving, these tools were not available.

U.S. Cellular offers resources that can help families with young drivers. U.S. Cellular's Vehicle Monitoring System allows parents to identify their son or daughter's location and any mechanical issues with the car.

After putting the easy-to-install module in the car, moms and dads can use the app on their Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge.

According to a recent Better Moments survey, 82 percent of parents surveyed have rules about their kids' cellphone use. Do you and your family have a plan in regards to how cell phones are used in your home? If you don't, I would highly advise that you set those rules asap.

U.S. Cellular offers one of the best family friendly parent-child agreement's in the marketplace today. This app helps parents facilitate a conversation with their kids around acceptable use of mobile devices. You can download the agreement U.S. Cellular Better Moments Parent Child Agreement.  I can personally tell you of two families that utilized this agreement after having experience a crisis with their 13 year old sons. Install this agreement before it is too late. The safety of our kids online is more important than ever, be proactive and catch the little problems before they grow into big problems
The agreement is customizable and parents can use it to set certain parameters for phone use as well as driving responsibilities and limitations.

Parents and teenagers can agree in writing that young drivers should not use their cellphones while driving. Texting and driving is something that everyone needs to take seriously. Lives can be saved when we all put those phones down while driving! Make the commitment today to stay connected with your young driver today. Be the parent that makes the difference, your kids will thank you. After All, It's All In a Mom' s Day, Right?

Life And Funerals: Trying To Find A Sense Of Normalcy

OK~ I've got a lot on my mind. Have you ever felt like you have had enough of life when it comes to funerals? My life is going good... and then bam, reality sinks in, as another person has passed away in our community that I have a connection with. I've been thinking a lot about this the past nine months, as I have had several funerals to attend where I really think about life.

If there is one thing that nobody ever told me was the fact that once you hit your Middle 40's, you need to seriously stock up on the sympathy cards. From relatives to neighbors to friends, a lot of people have passed away the past few months. I need to seriously accept the fact that death is a part of life. I think I do, but then when another death hits, I realize that I have not accepted it.

A couple things have made me think..... It becomes really challenging when you live where you grew up. It's expected that you will attend the visitation and the funeral. Now, in all honesty, it becomes mentally challenging to do both and even in some cases to attend both. When two funerals are back to back, it really becomes trying on the mind. I think I have a good handle on that... I do have that large stockpile of sympathy cards on hand now. It became too trying to head to the Hallmark store every time a death occurred. I will say this, I do miss the personalization that I felt I got when I went to the actual store, but in all reality; having a box on hand at home is making life a little less stressful.

We had a terrific holiday weekend, as we got our 24 year old son settled into his new apartment and spent yesterday watching our 20 year old son participate in his passion- a national trapshooting meet. Life is good- I really need to focus on the positive.

If there's one thing that Amy Hild taught me, it was to get out and live your life! Amy was one of North Iowa's biggest cheerleaders and she found joy in everything she did. So......I will move forward, live my life and focus on family, friends and all the joy that life has to bring. After All, It's All In A Mom's Day, Right?

Allianz Global Assitance~ Helping Make Vacation Planning Worry Free #SPONSORED

OK~ Most of you know that family travel is something that I am passionate about. I stand firm on the fact that kids learn as much, if not more, when traveling outside of a traditional classroom. Saving for a family vacation can be a time consuming task and it's more important than ever to protect your savings for that dream vacation. I am happy to share travel information that is sponsored by Allianz Travel Insurance through the Bloggy Mom's Network.

Allianz Global Assistance offers the tools that you need to protect you and your family, when it comes to your vacation of a lifetime. It's important to remember that when you are going on a trip, that travel protection with travel insurance through Allianz Global Assistance does matter. Those unforeseen circumstances can make life a little more challenging, but when you have been proactive and taken the necessary steps to protect your family, your vacation planning can become worry free.

More families are traveling in 2015 than in the past few years, as it's quite clear through this current survey that families are watching their money. Every dollar matters when it comes to booking your dream vacation.

  • Each year since 2009, Allianz Travel Insurance has conducted its Vacation Confidence Index Survey.  This year’s survey found that more Americans will travel, but plan to spend less on their trips in 2015. This year’s survey suggests that consumers are eager to save money on their summer travel and will be looking for trips that offer the best possible value, as well as opportunities to utilize the sharing economy to save money.

It's an exciting time to be traveling! Be smart and protect your investment through Allianz Travel Insurance. From medical assistance, to travel assistant services, you will be covered. If the unforeseen should happen, you will not be as disappointed as you would have been.

Want to learn more? Their story is really compelling to me, as his story sounds a lot like mine. How he describes what happened to him to need back surgery, hits home all too well. I was not on vacation when my issues hit me 9 years ago, but very well could have been. Watch Stuart and Linda's story:

Happy traveling friends... Where will Fall travel take you in 2015? I'd love to hear about your destination of choice! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
