Caucus Season Is Alive In Iowa

OK~ The Caucus is quickly approaching and tonight I headed to our local high school to see Former President Bill Clinton on a campaign stop for Hillary Clinton. I am not a registered Democrat, but I can tell you that here in Iowa, we have the opportunity to meet all the candidates when caucus season rolls around. I think it's important for us Iowans to hear what they have to say and then make a "wise" choice come caucus night.

I honestly decided to go see the former President about 15 minutes before the doors opened. I knew I had time to spare and it would all be good. I travel a lot and I have so many people that comment to me, "Oh, you are lucky. The candidates don't ever bother to step foot in our state." That statement is very true. As an Iowan, I can say that I probably take it for granted, and need to change that to being grateful.

We live in a free country, which is something to appreciate in itself. We also have the right to vote, whereas many in our world never have the opportunity. Tonight, Former President Bill Clinton reminded me of my roots in the Methodist religion, as Hillary is a Methodist. I have been a life long Methodist and there is something to be said about our roots. We, as Methodists, do care about others and strive to make a difference. I do agree, Hillary does have a history or trying to bring out the good in people. Although, I'm not ready to hop on her campaign wagon at this time.

All of the candidates are traveling through our state and will continue up until Monday evening. I'm not sure if I will venture out to see another one or not. Honestly, I'm getting about campaigned out. I think back to that caucus night in 2011, as I was not a happy camper.

I am really glad that I did make the time tonight to go see Former President Bill Clinton. It's not everyday that your local high school is taken over by the Secret Service, with a visit from a former President of the United States. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

This Sense Of Urgency Needs To Stop So I Can Have You In My Life

OK~ I've been thinking a lot lately and it's about something we all care about. It's YOU! Please put your phone down while driving in your car. I don't care if you feel the need to send "that" message now, it can wait until later.

There used to be a time when you had to actually dial, (yes, I said dial) a telephone to call someone.

They would sometimes answer and other times they would not. But you know what? We patiently waited to try back later. When did everything in our lives become a sense of urgency? I don't know about you, but this need to know now is honestly going to kill us off.

A couple weeks ago my husband and I were on the road for more than 3,900 miles in one week. Each time we came upon a vehicle that was swerving or going a slow speed, the driver had a phone or book in their hand. Really? People..... drive your car, not yourself into the ground!

I often hear a parent say, "Oh, they are calling me again." And then I look at my clock and think, they should be in school. It turns out that the child is calling to complain about a class. Our kids of today do not know how to deal with life. Life happens. We have to learn to work with people we don't like, period. My question is, "What on earth is a parent supposed to tell this child during the school day?" The first step any parent can make is to invest in a parent/child agreement app for their phone. Parents need to let their kids know that smart phones are serious business and not a toy. They are the gateway to the world wide web and it's of vital importance that everyone pays attention to how they are used.

I challenge you... the next time you get in your car do the following:

Place both hands on the steering wheel
Look ahead, not down at your phone while driving

These two things may seem simple, but from my personal observation I can tell you that many drivers cannot do this. When drivers are not attentive to the roads, it puts all of our lives in jeopardy. Here in the state of Iowa it is illegal to text while driving. I would love to know how many people have actually been ticketed for this offense and if the fine matters. It's evident that the fine is not steep enough, look around the next time you are sitting at a stop light.

I love my smart phone and all that it has to offer, but I can also tell you that I feel perfectly fine putting it down for periods of time throughout the day. When I'm driving, I'm not searching Facebook and I'm not reading your text messages or your e-mails. I will get in touch with you when it is safe to do so.

Life was simpler when we had real dial up phones. Kids were not calling parents 24/7 and we could all live our lives without someone else determining our every move. We understood that others had lives to live. If I never stepped away from my smart phone and this laptop, I would have nothing to write about. Ahhh... those 70's were not that bad after all! New Year's Resolutions Have Gone To The Dogs, Literally

With 2016 finally here, I've already been planning about how to make this new year the healthiest one yet.
Although there are numerous ways I could improve myself and my health, what if I could also get my family involved including my furry family members, too?
Milk-Bone (the makers of my pup's favorite dog treats) recently conducted an original survey of 3,000 pet parents nationwide to find out which healthy habits families are pledging in the new year.
See the results below:
Top 10 New Year's Resolutions for Pets and Their Pet Parents
(% of pet parents who are interested in each pet-oriented resolution)
1.  "I will spend more time with my dog."  52%
2.  "I will help my dog to have better health and wellness."  42%
3.  "I will take my dog on more trips with me."  34%
4.  "I will brush my dog's teeth regularly."  31%
5.  "I will help my dog get more essential vitamins, nutrients, and supplements."  30%
6.  "I will help my dog become less anxious and stressed."  29%
7.  "I will not feed my dog food from the dinner table."  25%
8.  "I won't leave my dog home alone for quite as long."  23%
9.  "I will help my pet lose weight."  21%
10.  "I will take my dog to dog training class."  15%
Of course, old habits die hard -- which is why Milk-Bone has also fetched the best ways to make sure these resolutions stick.
Top Tips for Keeping New Year's Resolutions
>> 1.  "I will spend more time with my dog."  52%
According to the survey, 44% of pet parents say that having a dog brings a family closer together.  Whether it's taking Fido to a new dog park or adding a few minutes to your daily walk, you can easily increase quality time with your pup.
>> 2.  "I will help my dog to have better health and wellness."  42%
In addition to plenty of play and exercise, consider providing your pup a daily vitamin supplement, such as Milk-Bone Good Morning Daily Vitamins, which promote well-being, longevity and overall good health.
>> 3.  "I will take my dog on more trips with me."  34%
Taking your pup on vacation not only adds fun, but it also alleviates the worry of not knowing what's happening wth him while you're away. Be sure to bring his favorite toy or something he loves to keep him calm during travel.
>> 4.  "I will brush my dog's teeth regularly."  31%
Weary about brushing your canine's canines? Start a new daily routine and try a dental chew, such as Milk-Bone Brushing Chews -- which clean teeth, remove tartar and fight dreaded doggy breath.

This daily dental treat also comes in a new 'Fresh Breath' flavor (in stores Feb. 2016) for an even tastier clean.
>> 5.  "I will help my dog get more essential vitamins, nutrients, and supplements."  30%
Vitamins provide beneficial nutrients not found in regular dog food -- which is why it's a good idea for both of you to start the day off right with a daily vitamin supplement. Milk-Bone Good Morning Daily Vitamins support your dog's immune system, brain, heart, and digestion.
>> 6.  "I will help my dog become less anxious and stressed."  29%
If you have a timid dog, the key to reducing his stress is by building his self confidence. Start by teaching him to respond to basic commands -- it will make him feel more comfortable in his environment.
>> 7.  "I will not feed my dog food from the dinner table."  25%
Every dog loves (and often begs for) tasty table scraps. Next year, resist the urge and provide tasty pet treats instead. These Milk-Bone treats are ones that not only taste good but are (actually) good for them.
>> 8.  "I won't leave my dog home alone for quite as long."  23%
If you can't leave work early, consider providing a new furry companion for your pup.  Or perhaps you can arrange for a friend's dog to make a house call.
>> 9.  "I will help my pet lose weight."  21%
Just like us, some pups could stand to lose a few pounds. Next year, make Fido your accountability partner and commit both yourselves to eating healthier, along with plenty of play and exercise.
>> 10.  "I will take my dog to dog training class."  15%
Experts are experts for a reason. Accredited dog trainers have tons of experience in teaching both pets (and pet parents) positive reinforcement techniques that are safe and effective.
My Dog Skipper's New Year's Resolution for 2016
Of all these resolutions, the one that resonates with me is 'brushing my dog's teeth regularly.' According to the survey, 40% of dog parents do this... and I'd love to do this more regularly.
Of course, brushing your dog's teeth is one of those things that's a lot harder than it sounds.  Thanks to Milk-Bone Brushing Chews, however, I don't have to lift a finger.  (Well, maybe that's all I have to lift.)  Basically, the Brushing Chew does all the manual labor in keeping my pup's teeth clean and breath fresh.  Double win!

And I can tell you that Skipper will not be overly joyed with this resolution. I don't know about you, but we have never had a dog that enjoys keeping his teeth clean. He will rather be doing this.

So, stay tuned! Not sure how this resolution will pan out!

Readers, what resolution are you planning to make for you and your dog in 2016?

Chase The Winter Blues Away With Apps For Your Smartphone #SPONSORED

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular Customer for 15+ years.

OK~ Winter has arrived in Iowa and we will be stuck indoors with winter storm watches and warnings, and it will be easy to let those winter blues grasp ahold of us. If your children received cellular devices for Christmas, be sure to invest in U.S. Cellular's Child/Protection Agreement. There's something to be said about being as worry free as possible when our kids are online.

Did you know that your smartphone can help you kick those winter blues to the curb? Many smartphone users use them to play games. A recent U.S. Cellular Survey indicated that 61% of smartphone owners use them to play games. Are you included in this 61%?

How about a game of Life, Monopoly or Yahtzee? This will keep your mind busy and give you a purpose! An old fashioned board game can easily chase away the winter doldrums. If you have enough people in the house to play the "real" board game, don't hesitate to dig out the real board. It's nice that smartphones offer a solution when it comes to being able to play a board game at the press of a button.

These apps are available on iTunes and Google Play. I have found them very easy to download onto my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge through Google Play. Competing with folks from all over the world is sure to cheer you up and offer energy for a cold winter's day!

If you cannot be outdoors, you can experience snow through the Make a Snowman and Snowman Maker Plus. Families can design their own snowmen and share them! What a fun way for kids and families to experience winter.

Maybe cooking is your thing! There are also several apps to inspire you to change up things in the dead of winter, in the kitchen. The Food Network on the Road is a great app to help you spice up those dishes in your kitchen.

And there you have it, winter does not have to be long, dark and dreary! Although many of you know that my solution is to get on a plane or in the car and head south. My smartphone definitely helps make the cold, dreary days of winter go by a little faster.

If you are using your smartphone to chase away your winter blues, I'd love to hear about the apps you are using. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
