The Tide Is Changing In North Iowa: Embrace The Change

OK~ So there are these reports that come out year after year, that share how the population of an area fluctuates. The county that I live in has been on a spiral of heading downward. The latest report shows another dip downwards. I look at this as a time of opportunity. The tide is changing and I can feel it, right here, in my neck of North Iowa.

I've talked about how demographics have changed over the past 20-25 years. I live a little over a mile from where I grew up. During the 1970's and 80's, farms were much smaller. Therefore, it was not uncommon to have three-four farmers living on a stretch of a mile, which also meant that there were 10+ kids living on that mile, attending a local school. Over time, farmers quickly learned they could not raise a family, while farming 200 acres of ground.Today, we are lucky to find a landowner on that mile and a child to attend school. Lots of land in Iowa is owned by out of staters, therefore; the land is rented out to people that do not live nearby.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but it is reality in the area that I live in. As someone who does have a home in North Iowa, I'm pleased to hear of an economic boom coming to North Iowa. With the proposal of a new hog processing operation coming to the area, employing up to 2,000 people, I'd say the tide is changing.

We will need people to work at this plant and the nine county area of North Iowa is all going to benefit. For people that want to move to North Iowa, they will be looking for housing and a quality of life that we can offer families. Schools will need more teachers, as more students will be in the area. Main Street businesses will have more people to set foot through their doors. Experiences await all of us in North Iowa and I'll be the first one to introduce anyone to the awesome we have here. The list goes on and on........

Change is something that I struggle with as I get older, but this is a good change in North Iowa. We cannot make the go alone, it does take a village, and I'm happy to be a part of it. Jobs and opportunities keep us all afloat and hopefully moving more in the positive direction of population growth. And in case you didn't know, Clear Lake, Iowa is home to the BEST 4th of July Celebration in the midwest. We have a lot of awesome in our own backyard and we need to welcome others that want to embrace it. I don't know about you, but I'm excited to share our North Iowa community with everyone that wants to learn more.

Here in North Iowa several people have attended the North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club for the past 2 1/2 years. Many folks have made new business connections and have learned how to be safer and smarter online. I see these attendees as some of the best supporters of what we have here in North Iowa. We have a gem of a community, that we often take for granted, and need to showcase the positive. These social media breakfast attendees understand the importance of networking and the gem that we have here in North Iowa.

How does your community keep moving forward? Is the tide changing in your area? I'd love to hear your thoughts. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#SPONSORED: Smart Ways To Improve Your Password Habits

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular Customer for 15 years.

OK~ Online safety is something that I am extremely passionate about. A simple way to keep your family in check, is to utilize this Parent/Child Agreement app that is easy to use.The offline conversations are just as important, as the online conversations that parents have with their kids.

How are your password habits? Did you know that 12345 is not a good choice for a password? We have some tips to keep your family in check, when it comes to being safer and smarter online. When protecting valuable information, those passwords share common patterns, creating vulnerability across the various accounts we all use every day, ranging from the ones that need to be most secure, like bank and credit cards, to social media sites or free subscriptions. If one account gets hacked, all accounts sharing the same password and email are at much greater risk. Be smart and make it difficult for the criminal to have access to everything.

In a recent Harris Interactive Survey, it indicated that 59 percent of adults admit to reusing a password, including home computers, work computers and smart devices, like the Samsung Galaxy Edge 6. See how easy this makes things for the bad guy? Here is a solution for you. Check out these apps that will help you organize your passwords.

This trusted app provides users with a secure vault and organization of accounts for user preference. Its features also allow for easy transitions between accounts on the same site. Like many other password management apps, LastPass can also keep track of credit card information, audit account passwords, record secure audio notes and more. Premium features for $12 a year include a shared family folder, unlimited device sync, multi-factor authentication and access to accounts from any device or computer.

As the number one most downloaded password management app, Keeper provides users with the ability to manage passwords across various accounts. Keepers free version provides local password storage and use on one device. A $29.99 per year subscription is required to access many of its quality features. Those include unlimited password storage, secure online storage for photos, videos and documents, and access across multiple devices, along with the ability to share the information with other users. Those with a subscription can also set up a finger print login for quick and secure access to their account.

Dashlane is another great option. It's rated among the top password manager apps and is listed as Editor's Pic in the Google Play Store. In addition to creating complex passwords for accounts, Dashlane acts as a digital wallet to make secure on-the-go payments and provides security breach alerts for usernames and passwords. Offered for $39.99 per year, the premium subscription allows syncing across devices, securing Cloud backup and accessing information via the web.

Familiarize yourself with these apps, as they can make your online experience online safer and smarter. Since 65 percent of smartphone users always remember to take their device with them when they leave the house. With that mobility and U.S. Cellular's robust network with nationwide coverage, people have embraced their smartphones for shopping online, managing bank accounts, catching up on news and emailing, all while on the go. Some additional steps to keep your accounts safe are simple, such as refraining from connecting in locations offering free WiFi. While it may be tempting to utilize the free WiFi, the connection may not be secure, which can impact your account security if accessed while connected.

Make the time to install these apps and your online experience has the potential to keep you safer than ever before. Remember..... talk to your kids about how they are using their smartphones, as those offline conversations carry a lot of weight when it comes to our kids! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

What I Learned From Serving On PTO Committees

OK~ It's been a few years now that our boys have graduated from high school. I have had time to reflect on my experience with PTO Committees throughout the years. I joined the PTO early on, as I knew it was the best way to know what was happening in our school. Its' true, when you are not involved in your school's PTO, you will not fully understand why decisions are made and how those decisions came to fruition. If you are on the fence about joining your school's PTO, here is why you need to jump on board.

By being involved in your local PTO you will learn new things. If you volunteer to help out in a classroom, you may learn how to paint like never before. Classroom volunteers are often needed and it gives you and opportunity to learn something new. I can recall a lesson in tie dying that I experienced and it was fun at the same time.

Before you chime in with, "That's too much work!" Think about the importance of families coming together for school functions. A school carnival may be what one family needs to keep their child interested in attending school. Unfortunately, there are parents out there that never set foot in their child's classroom. A family event is the easiest way to get them there. Be the event planner and make it happen! The beauty of being an event planner is that you can do a lot of this on your own time. See where I'm going? Not every volunteer position is done on a schedule. When you step to to plan, you can set the time frame.

Many families get buried in the day to day activities of school, sports, music lessons and work. When you become involved in PTO, you meet new people with a common interest. You are interested in kids and families. Next thing you know, spring break will roll around and you will find yourself cruising around Walt Disney World with new friends in tow. True story- this does happen!

Most importantly decide how you want to participate in the PTO at your child's school. Maybe you want to be a monetary donor, as opposed to being there in person. Whatever you choose, be involved in the PTO at your child's school. This was how I found out what was going on in my child's school and I had a better understanding as to how and why things were done in our local school district.

After fifteen years of serving on several PTO committees, I can honestly say I was ready for a break, but I would not trade those years for anything!

So... tell me! What's your experience been like when it comes to PTO? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
