Keeping It Local: Iowa's Main Streets Should Be A Pleasant Experience

OK~ I recently stopped to check out a Main Street in a community near me. I was looking forward to shopping in a couple locally owned stores, when I found myself exiting rather promptly. I choose to surround myself with positive people and let me tell you, I found some of the most negative people on the planet.

Here's something to think about. If you own a shop in the heart of a Main Street, train your sales people to be friendly and welcoming. There's nothing more disheartening than to be greeted with, "Why would you wan to shop in this *!*$$ town?" I said, "Excuse me." I then exited rather quickly, hopped in my car and headed down the road.

I began to question if I had done the right thing. Should I have tried to be nice and turn the conversation around? I have no time for people that choose to live with such negative insight. I choose to surround myself with people that think in a forward point of view. I can agree to disagree with someone, end of conversation.

Our communities in Iowa are changing. Several have had some stunning additions to their Main Streets and others have added some amazing festivals throughout the year. Clear Lake, Iowa, is home to a fantastic Kite Festival in the dead of winter. That to me, is forward thinking. Most lake towns forget about winter and skip it. I love the fact that Clear Lake chooses to embrace all 365 days of the year.

Our season of nice weather in Iowa is rather short. So, one would think if a person took the time to drive down Main Street, walk in their brick and mortar store, a welcoming undertone would prevail in today's competitive shopping market. After all, it's very easy to shop with our smart phones. I'm all about keeping the dollars local, but frustrated when my dollar is not appreciated.

I will give Main Street in this community another chance. I'm thinking maybe it was an off day. I travel through here every six to eight weeks, so I will return. If my mind was 100% closed, I would not set foot back on that Main Street. But, due to the fact that I am open to new ideas and experiences, I will return. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#SPONSORED: Taking Care Of Your Youngsters Teeth Just Got Easier With Plackers® Fruit Smoothie Swirl Flossers

OK~ There's something about trying to get kids to take care of their teeth. You've been there, right? Plackers® Flossers to the rescue! The day these Plackers® Flossers arrived, my nieces knew they were in for a little tooth cleaning fun.

The new Plackers® Fruit Smoothie Swirl flossers are designed to make flossing fun for parents and kids. The dual grip handle makes them easy to use for kids of all ages, and allows parents to assist. So now you may be wondering, what exactly makes these flossers so good?

  • Reduces tooth decay and promotes healthier gums
  • Removes plaque and food
  • Includes fluoride
  • Fruit Smoothie Swirl flavor
  • BPA free
I love the fact that the Plackers®Dual Grip Fruit Smoothie Swirl Kids' Flossers are designed for both parents and kids to use. The dual grip makes the flossers easy for kids of all ages to use, and allows parents to assist. The Plackers® hi-tech floss is engineered not to stretch, shred, or break, and includes fluoride to promote strong teeth and reduce tooth decay.

Dentists recommend as soon as a child has two teeth that are touching, parents should help them establish a daily flossing routine I can tell you, that I wish these would have been around several years ago when our boys were younger. My nieces, they loved these! They loved how they smelled and that they could use these themselves.

Here's a little tip that I think is pretty cool. When packing your child's lunch box, toss in a pair of flossers. They may or may not use them, but they will be reminded that caring for their teeth does matter. Hopefully a simple task like this will help instill the importance of healthy dental habits to continue for a lifetime. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#SPONSORED: April Is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular Customer for 15+ years.

OK~ April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and it's safe to say that distracted driving has become a relevant issue over the last few years deserving attention and education. Have a young driver in the house? Before they get behind the wheel, make sure you have gone over U.S. Cellular's parent/child agreement. With drivers both young and old on the streets, staying attentive on the road and surroundings is more important than ever. Every single road trip that I take, I see people weaving in and out. Often times they are messing around with their smartphone and not paying attention to the road. I've also seen folks with books spread out across their steering wheels. Distracted driving is an issue that needs to be addressed.

If you must have your smart phone out while driving, you can make things a little safer. Did you know that your Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge can be paired with wireless accessories to increase safety and maintain productivity while on the road? It's no secret, smart phones are hard to put away while driving. According to a recent U.S. Cellular survey, 43 percent of smartphone users use their device while driving.

Here are some tips to help you maintain productivity and be safe while one the road:

It is easy to be distracted by the phone buzzing in the console. If the noise is too disruptive, switch to the Do not Disturb mode on the Galaxy Samsung 6 Edge during drive time. Friends and family will understand the commitment to limit distractions. Many of you know, that we need to stop thinking that everyone is available 24/7. Driving is one of those times!

Enter the address into the GPS on a smartphone before hitting the road. Make sure to place your mobile device in a spot where directional prompting can be heard to prevent you from missing a turn. I have been there and done that. The volume was not turned up and I missed a turn. Note: Make sure volume is turned up.

With accessories such as the Plantronics Voyager Legen Bluetooth Headset, carrying on a conversation during a commute is easy, convenient and safe.

According to the same U.S. Cellular survey, 74 percent of those who use their phone while driving utilize a hands-free device such as a Bluetooth headset or in-car Bluetooth system. Another tip: If you have a new vehicle, try out the wireless pairing in your driveway, before you actually hit the pavement.

Remember, distracted driving not only affects you, but also impacts the safety of others. Passengers can help you if a message or phone call absolutely cannot wait. If driving alone, consider pulling off the road briefly to use a device. It's also important to remember that distracted driving is not limited to using a mobile device, but also includes eating, drinking, grooming and talking to passengers. In 2013, there were 3,1254 deaths in relation to distracted driving. Now that's reason enough to be smart while driving! Pay attention to the task at hand, driving.

Make the commitment to not text and drive. With the popularity of texting, it is no surprise that 87 percent of smartphone owners text daily. U.S. Cellular's Parent-Child Agreement allows families to create a customizable contract with family members to make the conversation easier and clearer. The agreement focuses on safety and etiquette, even when it comes to bringing smartphones into the car.

Be safe and smart while driving and familiarize yourself with all of the wireless devices that are designed to keep you safe. Once May arrives, be sure to continue to practice your safe driving skills. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but that doesn't mean your new habits ends on April 30th.
