One Year Later..............

OK~ February 25th has come and gone. It was a day that I kept myself busy, busy, busy. I wanted to remember, but I wanted to forget. Amy of Modern Rural Living taught me way more than I ever realized.

Amy was vibrant and young. I do not consider myself to be vibrant or young. She kept me alive and encouraged me to change things up a little. As I get older, it's harder to accept change, can you relate? Amy showed me that it's OK to be different and be "that" person! I often hear from people that young people don't care. Well, I can tell you, that young people do care and they are often the ones that are encouraging people like me to keep moving forward.

So.... One year later!

I am LIVING my life! I am not letting any grass grow under my feet.

I am doing what I love..... meeting new people through the world of travel.

I am a connector. I help a lot of people make connections; from auctioneers to travelers, to almost anyone I meet.

I am a Mom to two awesome young adults.

I have a husband who enjoys traveling with me and supports me in my crazy adventures.

I want to help North Iowa be a place that folks want to call home. Through the North Iowa Bloggers, North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club and working with so many fantastic people, it's all happening! North Iowa does have a stronger, healthier online presence and I thank Amy for showing me the importance of it.

The Midwest is full of experiences that many often over look, that's why the Midwest Travel chat, with the Walking Tourists came to fruition. Amy was so excited to share our event, as she loved anything related to Iowa or the Midwest.

If there's one thing that I would share with you, it's the fact that Amy was one of North Iowa's biggest online cheerleaders. You too, can be that person in your community! If anyone in North Iowa wanted something to do, Amy knew where it was, what time it started, and of course, what food was served!

Amy's recap of a North Iowa Blogger trip to Webster City, Iowa, reflects on how passionate she was about helping communities grow. She showed me how I needed to step up my game!

So..... another year and I'm out living my life and meeting new people day in and day out. Iowa is a fantastic place to call home, as we can visit crazier places and come home to our little slice of quiet.

Thank you, Amy, for showing me how to live my life! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Tips For Using Social Media To Help Grow Your Community

OK~ There's something to be said about Rural America when it comes to a quality of life you cannot find in many other places. I've had the opportunity to speak in several rural communities over the course of the past couple months. The one thing everyone seems to have in common, is the fact that they wonder how they can attract new people to their communities Most of you know that my response would be, "How are you using social media in your community?"

When people within a community show what they have in their back yards, it's often another person's dream home. Seriously, think about the last photo you posted to Instagram. Does it reflect you, your home, or your community? Chances are that it maybe something you take for granted, as you see it everyday.

Did you know that the simplest way to be an online cheerleader for your community is to share your world online? Your local coffee shop, more than likely has your favorite cup of coffee. And let's face it, coffee can be fun to photograph.

Does your community have a park that you adore? Why not take a few pics of the playground equipment, greenery and family friendly activities? A walking/biking trail or maybe a fishing pond also make for great photo opportunities.

Be the online cheerleader in your community, as you can be part of the change that keeps people in your neighborhood. You can help keep our rural communities alive in Rural America by ramping up your online presence. A note for my Iowa friends. The hashtag #ThisIsIowa is recognized a lot through social media.

So, tell me. How are you helping Rural America thrive? I'd love to hear what you are doing. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Compassion.... Where Has It Gone?

OK~ My mind is really, really spinning. One of our fellow North Iowa Bloggers has been seriously ill for a couple of weeks. This whole experience has been an eye opener for me. It's evident that people are very, very caught up in their day to day lives, as they do not find time to acknowledge an illness of someone be it through a card or visit.

It's true, life does get busy. But what really saddens me, is the fact that a Dr. says to a patient that they were too busy to visit them while they were in the hospital. Compassion seems to have went by the wayside. Sometimes a simple, "Checking in, how are you today?" is all that is needed. So would someone enlighten me as to why this is so difficult to do?

I know it can be uncomfortable when someone is ill. We don't know what to say, how we should say things and if we should keep our mouth shut. If that's the case, send a card, text message or something that shows you care.

I have said it time and time again.... the North Iowa Bloggers get along better than the ladies in the church kitchen. And man, has this experience shown me that. The North Iowa Bloggers and several members of the North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club are the most compassionate group of people that I know. They are cheering our fellow blogger on through cards, flowers, text messages and occasional visits.

Which brings me to compassion. Where are her church people? Myself and another North Iowa Blogger have alerted the church that she has been ill for quite sometime. She did receive a visit from her Pastor, but I am pondering, where are all the people that make up the church? It's interesting how busy bloggers and members of the North Iowa Social Media Breakfast Club are finding time to visit. Something to ponder.

I am thrilled to have found such a compassionate group of people in North Iowa.

This whole ordeal has left me rethinking the church as a whole. This may also explain why so many people are leaving the church in droves. When basic compassion is lacking, where's a person to turn? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Social Media In Our Classrooms

OK~  I know from experience that it's not always easy to tell your kids no. Sometimes it's easier just to give in. Today I had the pleasure of speaking with a group of high school students in an Intro to Business Class. The topic was Marketing in 2016.

One thing that really stood out to me was the fact that their classroom book was ten years old. Think about that. Think how much marketing has evolved in the past ten years. Social media is a huge part of marketing today and many schools across the country are using text books that don't even mention those words. From photos to conversations, social media is a huge part of marketing. The North Iowa Bloggers dined at Applebee's and shared their experience through social media. Boom! Marketing success- Bring out the smart phone and some hashtags, the magic happens!

Social media really gets the attention of kids in a classroom. It's something they are very familiar with and use day in and day out. I asked them, "How many of you had parents set up your personal Facebook account before you were old enough to have one?" Jaw dropped here........ all but 4 of 19 students had parents help them set up accounts before they were of age. Now, you all know, in my opinion, there are still many adults that are still not mature enough for Facebook. But really? Why lead our kids into the unknown at such a young age? Parents have a responsibility to help keep their kids safe online, not open the doorway for predators.

It's important for our teens to know that the world wide web is a place to make business connections, as many will be entering the work force very soon. Those social media profiles are worth their weight in gold. If kids post things that are inappropriate at the age of 11, guess what? That post may very well be, what keeps them from getting into a college of their choice.

The next time you are in your local high school, check out their business text books. I will admit it, I was disappointed when I heard our high school students of today were not learning new ways of marketing in 2016. I can say that I enjoyed sharing my story and inspiring teens to use social media in a positive way. All in all, it was a great day! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

#SPONSORED: U.S. Cellular Is Working To Educate Kids On Career Opportunities In Engineering

Disclosure: As part of the Better Moments Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions expressed here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular Customer for 15+ years.

To celebrate the 65th Anniversary of National Engineers Week, U.S. Cellular is working to help increase understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers by holding “Ask an Engineer” sessions at Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the country.

U.S. Cellular is a leader when it comes to keeping families safe online. The Parent/Child Agreement is one way you can keep your family safer and smarter online. So, it should not come as a surprise that U.S. Cellular is paving the way for an engineering career for our kids.

The goal of U.S. Cellular’s “Ask an Engineer” sessions are to bring engineering to life for kids and show them the different career paths that are available with a technical or engineering education.
U.S. Cellular wants to motivate youth to explore career opportunities in engineering and to encourage a more diverse engineering workforce in the future.

These sessions will give attendees a hands-on look at how U.S. Cellular’s network operates and provide youth with information on career opportunities in engineering.

  • U.S. Cellular is providing this opportunity so that children and teens can have a behind-the-scenes look at how a cellular network operates and understand how engineering and technology is present in everyday activities.
  • Without engineers and the technology they build, U.S. Cellular would not be able to provide its customers with national coverage and a high-quality network that works wherever they want to go.
  • For youth or parents interested in learning more information about career opportunities in engineering, we recommend visiting the official National Engineers Week website at DiscoverE.org.
Education is something that I am personally concerned about. We have kids that do not believe they can achieve their goals, therefore; they shut down once they graduate (if they graduate) from high school. This program excites me, as it ties in technology with U.S. Cellular and a career that many kids would enjoy

U.S. Cellular currently provides its customers with national coverage and a high-quality network that works wherever they want to go. Most customers, not all, have access to a 4G LTE Network. I love the fact that my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge works in so many places across the country, as it keeps me connected 24/7.

Thinking of all of the advances in technology over the past five years, is just jaw dropping. Our kids of today, are living in a exciting time of technology advances. Opportunities are everywhere and U.S. Cellular is showing families the behind the scenes look. Now that my friends, is a win- win. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
