Parents, Are You Listening To Your Kids?

OK~ I've had the opportunity to speak with three different groups of teens the past couple weeks. If there is one thing I have noticed, several of our kids today are unhappy. When you listen to what our kids of today have to say, as I've sure it's been this way for years; they are honest and open with you.

If there's one thing I learned, it's that our kids are stressed with their schedules. When kids are not allowed to have any down time, they begin to dislike everything they do. Some of the kids I met flat out said to me, "I want to volunteer more with my church, but I cannot because my parents have signed me up for several different travel sports teams all year long." My reply was, "Have you talked to your parents about this?" They all told me, they won't listen.

Seriously? Parents, listen to your kids. The kids that I met last week were kids that were well mannered and really trying to please their parents. I could see that a breaking point was near and that's when the problems will set in.

I worked in a high school as a para-educator several years ago and I heard the same thing then. Sadly, many of the kids that I had this same conversation with were into trouble a couple years down the road. I have seen first hand that it is possible to over schedule your kids with activities. If you don't allow them to have some down time, they honestly have no clue what to do with it when they hit the real world.

Down time in the real world involves folding clothes, washing clothes, doing dishes, walking the dog and all those good things that we do to survive in the world today. Volunteering is something kids should be proud to be a part of, yet it can be another trap. I've also seen kids that were volunteered out. Hence, they hit a breaking point.

Parents, my challenge to you is to work on the finding the balance for your kids. I learned that many of our kids are hurting, tired and want to slow down. Listen to your kids and come to the best agreement that you can.

I do not claim to be a perfect parent, I never was. Stay in tune to what your teens are doing. Listen to them and they will thank you down the road. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My Challenge To You Is To Patronize A Local Business

OK~ It's been a while since I've addressed the topic of local. It's time to readdress it. When did it become the norm, for our so called local organizations that run around with the titles of our home towns, to not do business with local people?

I understand that we have a world wide economy. I do truly understand that. Our brick and mortar stores are struggling to stay open, yet local offices order paper products online. Really? What's wrong with patronizing a local business? I'm talking any brick and mortar storefront. The local tax dollars do mean something in our communities and each penny does matter.

My challenge to you is to stop into a store on your main street this week and spend a minimum of one dollar. Easy enough? If each person that read this, we could make a small dent. I dislike seeing local business owners struggle, yet it's true, in order to succeed in today's world, you do need to offer something unique.

My friend Lisa of Today's Your Day, is doing that! She offers creative balloon decorations that you cannot find anywhere else. Lisa offers balloon creations that she makes with her hands and a whole lot of love!

It is true that you can purchase some of the same balloons in a local discount store, but I can guarantee you that your balloons will not look as cute as this!

So, tell me. How do you support local businesses? I was disheartened to learn that in two communities near me, five, yes I said five, main street businesses are closing. My challenge to you is to patronize the brick and mortar stores we still have. Before we know it, we will all be saying, "Where did they all go!

Have a business idea? Run with it and make it happen. Now is a great time for an entrepreneur to thrive. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Things You Need To Know Before You Sell Your Cellular Devices

Disclosure: As part of U.S. Cellular's Blogger Brigade Program, I did receive compensation for this post. The opinions here are mine and nobody else's. I have been a U.S. Cellular customer for 20+ years. In fact, I have never been with another cell phone company.

OK~A new year brings new devices. Your online safety matters to me and we have put together some tips to keep you safe and smart online when selling your cellular devices. Many people updated to the Apple iPhone 7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 over the holidays. It's not uncommon for people to sell their older devices after the holidays, as some folks want some extra cash or want to help out a family member through a donation to them.

Most importantly make sure you remove your personal information from your cellular device before you part with it. We have put together some tips to help you maneuver this process.

BACK UP YOUR CLOUD ACCOUNT

There are several steps to take when wiping your phone of personal information. A good first step is to save all contacts, photos, notes, files, and other information to a Cloud account, computer or external hard drive. After the information is backed up, delete them from your phone and empty the deleted items folder.

REMOVE THE SIM CARD

Next remove your SIM card. The SIM  card is the external storage device housed on the microSD card. It is the small, rectangular shaped card usually located near your phone battery.

LOG OUT OF SERVICES LIKE SOCIAL MEDIA AND EMAIL

You want to clear out of all email and social media accounts accessed from devices that you are parting ways with. This should clear all data, including passwords, from these apps.

DISCONNECT THE PHONE FROM THE CLOUD ACCOUNT

Now that you have backed up your data in step one, you want to disconnect from your cloud account. Otherwise, the phone's new owner could easily access information that's stored there.

REMOVE MOBILE PAYMENT OPTIONS

These days, many people do their banking, pay their bills and take care of other financial obligations from their mobile devices. Disconnect all links, apps, and accounts that are associated with banking institutions and credit cards.

RESTORE THE PHONE TO FACTORY SETTINGS AND TURN OFF ALL SERVICES

Whether you decide to upgrade or sell, restoring the device to its original factory settings will remove personal information. You can do this by going to the settings feature on most smartphones.

DISCONNECT SERVICE

Call the service provider and remove the device from your account. U.S. Cellular associates are available at 1-888-944-9400.

UNREGISTER THE DEVICE

If the phone is registered with Apple by its serial number, remove it by logging into supportprofile.apple.com with the Apple ID information. Similarly, Androids will need to be unregistered. First, go to the Google Play store from the computer's Web browser. Then, go to the gear icon at the top-right-hand corner of the screen, and select the Settings option. Deselect the device from the Google account under the Visibility option. This will hide select device from appearing in the Play store when attempting to download a new app.

If you are the buyer here are a few tips for you:

  • Wipe your new used phone clean before personalizing it with your information. It will ensure that the devices settings, data, and apps are only yours. You will start with a clean slate.
If you are the recipient of a new to you cellular device, remember you can always stop into any U.S. Cellular location for assistance. U.S. Cellular has a machine known as a device solution center that can confirm all information has been removed and all accounts have been disconnected. This same device can also transfer your contact, pictures, etc. to your new device.

Enjoy your new cellular device, but most importantly remember to be safe and smart online. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
