OK~ Here's a short recap of the last 48 hours......I'm wondering how many of you can say "yes" to the following.

Have you worn your shirt inside out all day? Yep, that would be me-Did that today!
Have you exited the Interstate Highway to return and head North instead of South? Yep, that would be me- Did that today! (Only a 10 mile detour)
Have you reached for the salt and found out later you used the garlic instead? Yep, that would be me- Did that today!
Have you forgot to call the oral surgeon to make an appointment for you son who is complaining of his wisdom teeth? Yep, that would be me- Did that today! (A prompt reminder from my smart 16 year old will fix this situation)
Have you worn black socks to the gym? Yep, that would be me- Did that yesterday! (Isn't that what old people do?)
Have you let your dog in the house, only to be informed by your 16 year old son that the dog is carrying some type of carcass? Yep, that would be me- Did that today!

The School Cafeteria

OK~ I'm happy that my son's school will have a fully remodeled cafeteria in a few weeks. Today was just a taste of what is to come.....They kids had 1/2 of the good "stuff" that they will have in a few weeks. After almost a year of limited meals, my 16 year old is ready for more choices. Now I do realize that I can put a cap on how much he spends at lunchtime. I do want him to eat what he needs to eat- if I was a 16 year old boy and very tall, I'd probably need a lot too!

Garrett says: "Mom...Is it two meals if you take two plates?"

Me: "Are you talking about lunchtime?"

Garrett: "Yes. Do they charge you for two meals if you take two plates? You know, Mom I don't get full with one plate!"

Me: Thinking to myself- Yep, I am aware of that- Can you say raid the cupboards when he gets home fast enough? "Get what you need to eat. If you are hungry, eat!"

He still remembers the day when he was 10. The Doctor said to he and I, "Mom, this boy needs to eat everything and anything he wants!" He was below the 10th percentile for his age/weight/height. Yep...he's still tall and thin.........I do wonder....When will it catch up to him? And this hot lunch thing....Pasta bar arrives in a few weeks- I have a feeling the hot lunches will get pricier, but if he likes it, I'll gladly pay to put food that he eats on his plate! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ It's another Snow Day in Iowa today. This household is ready to return to its normal routine. I tackled another "project" today. I went on the hunt for some bowls and lids! Well.....This is what I found-

I had lids, lids, and lids. But, where are my bowls? I guess I'm now on a hunt! I'm thinking I may have to check a couple bedrooms in the house. 20 and 16 year olds like to "drag" bowls around, right? Is it just this house, or do the lids seem to accumulate more than the bowls do? These Snow Days drive this Mom to dig into the cupboards....Lord only knows next week what we will find! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Ummm...Wally- This Is Yours!

OK~ Wally likes the roof....and the couch! So, what's the deal? It's VERY cold in Iowa - Winter is here and he won't touch this!

I seriously don't think it's adventurous enough for him...

He'd rather be bumming a ride.......climbing roofs.......He's NOT about being cozy! But Wait....

Wally will gladly cozy up on the couch with a kid in a Horse Halloween Costume and Garrett! So....I do wonder- When will he think that new "warm" heating pad is a cool thing? For now, it's very clean- I'd like the dog hair on that heated pad thing, as opposed to the couch! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Bogs Footwear Review- Boots For "Outdoor" Activities

OK~ Old Man Winter returned to Iowa today! This is what Skipper thought of the snow.....

Now....I was kind of excited- sadly, more than him! I had purchased a pair of Bogs Boots and had not had the opportunity to try 'em out, until today!

I needed a pair of boots to tackle the upcoming Iowa High School Trapshooting Season. The season begins in March and the meets are usually very snowy, rainy, and muddy! So....I thought these were the answer!

These Classic Bog Boots (Mid Le Jardin) are a classic, outdoor boot! These Bogs Boots are not only waterproof, but also protected with a microbe shield- designed to control odor, staining, and deterioration. I did have wool socks on (my feet stayed toasty) - they are supposed to keep your feet warm to cool temps of -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

My feet stayed dry...as we had lots of snow to parade through today!

So....If you are in need of a pair of somewhat fashionable, yet functionable boots- this may be the pair that you need! I like 'em. I was concerned about the ability to take them on/off due to my foot drop. They were a little harder to remove from my right foot than my left. The extra effort that is needed to get 'em off of my right foot is worth the style and dryness they offer!

The true test will be when we hit the mud in the midst of the Iowa High School Trapshooting Season- And, I will let you know how my feet are enjoying the mud in these cute, little boots! I guess I shouldn't say "little"- I do wear a size "11!" Oh well......My feet will be dry, as we now have Winter in Iowa...lots of snow to plow through....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Time Changes Everything

OK~ We've all heard the saying at one time or another...time changes everything. Yes, it is true. Things look so very different after a few minutes, hours, days, months, or even years have passed. How often have you wanted to send someone an e-mail and saved it, only to return a few hours later and decide not to hit the "send" button? Yep, I think we've all been there!

Things change over time from a personal perspective as well. Think of the loved ones that have passed away before you.......The joyous times that were shared, the laughter and knowing that you will be joined together again! It's through our faith that we begin to realize that there is a purpose for everything in our lives. Thinking about the word purpose can be enough to make one's mind begin to spin! We are all born, we all live, and we all leave this earth at some point in our lives.

Today I'm reflecting on my nephew, Justin.

He crossed into heaven on January 19, 2005, with a BIG smile on his face! He was welcomed with open arms and we all find comfort knowing we will see him again! Those 17 years were special and I am truly blessed to have known such a fun, loving young man!

Time does change everything.........The next "time" you want to tell someone you love them- Do it! The next "time" you want to experience a new adventure in your life- Do it! The next "time" you want to eat butter- Do it! Yep, life is short- No matter if it's 17, 42, 87, or 93...There's always living to do! I'm thinking there is no time like today to life your life- Do it! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

And this is the drift in our yard! Now, snow lovers would say this is absolutely pathetic, but I like it! Mother Nature has proved to be interesting in Iowa this winter! See all that grass? Yep, that is grass- this is January and this is Iowa! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

16 Year Olds Can Be Amazing

OK~ I've decided that my 16 year old son is an amazing kid-This is Why!

How I wish I could eat two heaping plates of spaghetti with sausage for supper and stay thin! Seriously, if I ate like this, I would be much larger than I already am!
Sleep-What's up with that? This kid seriously runs on Duracell! This Mom needs her beauty sleep. The beauty of it at this period of his life, he does pop right out of bed, even for school. Clocky took care of that issue a couple years ago, remember that?
He keeps our two dogs entertained- I love that! These two are so lost when he's at school!
And I love the fact that he's not afraid to attack a critter....Yep, that would be my son, Wally, and Skipper! From the occasional skunk, woodchuck, to raccoons- we've got 'em all!
He loves snow. Ever wonder why kids like snow and parents don't?

What's so amazing to me is the things that our kids do and love when they are little, they still do as teens! They grow up, but they still have those "cute" little imperfections that we, as parents unconditionally love!

You gotta love the fact that a 16 year old can even say "Please" and "Thank You" occasionally! So, for now, this Mom's wondering when Netflix will go to sleep for the night...Tomorrow is a school day- I'm not watching tv, he is! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Power Of Social Media

OK~ Have you really ever thought about the power you have when you post something in Social Media? Several posts were shared throughout this past week, that I continue to think about. How about the young girls who were asking Mattel to introduce "Beautiful and Bald Barbie?" This will be interesting to watch!

And then there's a local gentleman who has lost more than 200 pounds, the old fashioned way in our community. He changed his diet~ Now- this guy has a story and I can't wait to see where Social Media takes him! He has more weight to lose, and is an inspiration to many.

And then there's Pinterest! My oh my....Yes, I've jumped on the Pinterest Bandwagon. One person that I know commented that it seems to be a recipe exchange-at this point, he may be right. Most of my pins are recipes and the majority of the people that I follow are pinning recipes. And yes, I did try one of those recipes today- Can you say FAIL loud enough? On to recipe #2 from Pinterest, let's see if that one is better!

And then there is LinkedIn...If you are not on LinkedIn- Let's connect there! I have just really came to grips with the power that this social media outlet offers. Having connected with several people on Twitter, who in turn have shared how they connected with their current boss through LinkedIn- and now have a job- This tells me the power of LinkedIn is huge! We are all connected- from Iowa to Europe-Social Media has you covered!

The power of Social Media is changing how we live, the things that we do, and the places that we go. I'm guessing you attended at least one event over the past year, all due to a Facebook invite? I'm excited to see where 2012 heads in the world of Social Media. For now- I'll continue to check out the latests posts, happenings, and events in your world in 2012! I really do use Facebook kind of a like a family calendar anymore, anybody else feel that way? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Old Man Winter- Bring it On!

OK~ Here's my take on Winter 2011-2012 thus far! Well......Old Man Winter, you have shown us your negativity (I seriously do not like those - temps) and you have also poured a few white flakes upon us. But, in all seriousness- if you are going to toss Winter our way...Give us some snow! Strange scenario this past week. Our two labs managed to go outside when the thermometer said 0 and bring in mud. With just a dusting of snow, I guess I might want to keep that crazy mop handy!

And yes- My feet will be armed for the upcoming High School Trapshooting Season in Iowa. I have purchased a pair of Bogs boots! They will keep my feet warm and dry! So, Mr. Old Man Winter- I am ready for your Spring games (you know, I have pics of attending a trapshooting meet on May 14th, 2011) mud all around and snow flakes in the air! Let's get Winter on the road, so I am not standing outside in snow, once May rolls around; only mud! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Check The Ads Before You Visit The Grocery Store (Very Closely)

OK~ A reminder of why it's so important to thoroughly scan any ads before you hit the grocery store! I glanced through a couple of them and found some awesome Friday the 13th deals. So...off to town I go!

I was in one grocery store and saw Lays potato chips 2 for $2.50, a pretty good price. I will not pay full price for something that we really do not need. So, I tossed a couple bags into the cart. I got up to the cash register, one rang up at $2.50 and the other at $4.29! Wow- I must've really misread the signage. One of the cashiers willingly offered to check it out. Well, the regular Lay's potato chips were $2.50, but the Honey Barbeque were $4.29- I said, "No, thank you. I don't want those today."

So, I venture on to grocery store #2- a mile down the road, so I'm not wasting a lot of gas driving around! These chips that were $4.29 are priced at $1.88! Yes...you read that correct~ $1.88!

Just an example of why it is so important to check out the prices BEFORE you hit the stores! With a price difference of $2.41, there is seriously no reason to pay full price for this item! Potato chips are not on my list, as I only buy them when they are on sale! So....a lesson learned~ check the ads! That's a lot of savings on one item. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Time to Clean Out The Lazy Susan- YIKES!

OK~ Admit it! You have a cupboard that you really don't want to seriously take a look at, right? Well, due to the fact that we had a little snow storm predicted (amounted to nothing), Blaine was home last night. Since he works in the food service industry, he is very much in tune to food expiration dates- I guess his Mother is not! After a couple minutes of digging around, he says, "Mom, I'm amazed we aren't sicker than we are!" I'm thinking, "What is he finding?"

He is taking this job very serious! OK...It's on to tackle this project! Some things that were in this cupboard had no dates on them. Blaine would say, "Another item. It's so old that the date is not even required to be on it!" Yikes......Can you say Fail?

This Mom was praying really, really hard that this would be the oldest thing we found! November 29, 2006 - Only a little over five years old! The tossing continues! AND- the oldest item we found was only almost eight years old, yes- you read that correct~ eight years old!

On the bright side, my soon to be 21 year old son says to me, "Well, at least there aren't any bugs in here!" Yikes.....I'm seeing a major shopping spree ahead!

I challenge you.....If you dare! Can you find something older than eight years in your lazy susan? I have a very bare lazy susan (probably for the best)!

The Drama Of The Coffee Shop

OK~ I'm hanging out in a local coffee shop this morning, surfing away. The table next to me is filled with three Moms, three toddlers and two new babies. These kids were all so quiet that I could not help hear the conversation amongst these women.

You know, since my youngest son is 16 1/2 years old, I am really not in tune to the "not sleeping" thing with a newborn baby. All three of these Moms continually talked about how tired they were due to their lack of sleep. Their problem seemed to be that when they put their kids into their own beds or cribs -the crying was non-stop. Hence, a night of toddlers & babies in their bed! Now....I'm probably being old schooled and thinking to myself, "Get through the crying for one night and life should be better!" My boys were in their own rooms, own cribs and managed to thrive. For those that want to have a family bed...Go for it, just was never the thing for our family.

These Moms were seriously wondering if they would ever get a good night of sleep. I thought to myself-NOPE! Get it now....When they get their official driver's license in their hand...that's when you enter the NO SLEEP ZONE! And there you have it- The Drama of The Coffee Shop: Take 1- After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

It's Official......Another Driver!

OK~ I'm not sure that I'm ready for this. He has signed on the dotted line, paper driver's license in hand, official driver's license to come in the mail soon! You know your son has grown up when the employee at the Iowa DOT says to him, "Is that you? Wow, you looked like a little kid in that picture from July 2010!" A wake up call for Mom too!

After signing his name five times..the fifth time was a charm! So...on to more adventures! Woo Hoo- This Mom can hardly wait! Garrett is my responsible child (I keep telling myself this) and he will get safely from Point A to Point B. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ When I hear the words January- I think of snow, piles of snow, iced roadways, and general misery in North Iowa! Wow- Today was so nice out (again)! Mid 40's, sunshine, blue sky and you seriously have to really look in the road ditches to see the remnants of our lone snow storm of the season.

I am hearing reports of trees budding, which I do not think is a good thing. We have a few more months before we won't have a frost here, so that concerns me. I also love, love, love my lilac bushes. I love the color and scent that they throw off in April/May. So....contrary to what I'd really like to happen- I do think Mother Nature should probably chill down a little bit, so I can enjoy my lilac bushes!

If you are in the car wash business, your business is GREAT! If you are in the snow moving business..Ummm...you probably want to move out of the area. And, if you are waiting to use that new toboggan that Santa left a couple weeks ago....it's not happening here in the next week. With more than a couple months of Winter left- I'm sure Mother Nature has a few tricks up her sleeve. So, for now, I'll enjoy these nice Spring like days! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Feeling A Little Older (Baby Passed Driver's Education)

OK~ It's official. Our 16 1/2 year old passed driver's education and has all the papers to take to the Iowa D.O.T. Strangely, he came if with his papers in his hand and says "We have to go sometime to get the actual license." I was taken back by this....He seriously could care less when he actually has his license in his hand. I recall that I could not wait to turn 16 and get my driver's license.

There's recent research that has been done, and it shows that teens prefer cell phones over cars- this Mom believes that. I would go so far as to say that teens prefer TECH over cars. Technology puts them in contact with their friends 24/7 through Facebook & Twitter. For whatever reason Garrett still has no desire to drive, but in due time I am sure he will want to.

So....next week, one day, we will venture to the Iowa D.O.T.- Still hard to believe that he is old enough to be driving! Where did all of those years go? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Iowa Caucus 2012

OK~ I attended the Iowa Caucus tonight and let me tell you about my experience! I love the fact that Iowa is true grass roots and we can chat about the candidates amongst our neighbors- An interesting time for this Iowa Mom.

I left home about 6:20 p.m.- as all of the news outlets had said that it was important to arrive by 6:30 p.m. to be sure you were registered and could participate at 7:00 p.m. I arrived at my destination (or so I thought) and saw NO lights on in the Rockwell Community Center. Now, I do not venture into the town of Rockwell, Iowa very often, but this was my voting venue. At this point I called a neighbor and asked her where the Rockwell Community Center was located, as I did not see a name on the building. She confirmed that I had arrived in the correct place. She then told me that the Democratic Caucus for our township had been moved to Mason City, about 10 miles away. So, I said to her, "Where do the Republicans go?" She replied, "I'm not sure!" I was thinking to myself- "Am I the only person that does not know where to go?" There were no other idiots like me sitting in their cars in front of this building..Ugghhh..

A quick phone call to my sister in Minneapolis- she locates some online information and she has nailed down two possible locations for our township. I then head to the school in town, and she confirms this might be the location. Now- this Caucus thing in Iowa is a pretty big deal, and there are no signs- nothing to confirm that I am in the right location. I try to open four doors- I kid you not, LOCKED! At this point I am ready to go home...And low and behold, a young teen opens the door for me. I then wander into the school, yes this Mom was wandering........

After a little wandering I see a fairly large sized room all lit up and I asked if this was my voting location for my township. Yes, I had arrived. By this point I was not a happy woman....I did feel bad for the volunteers in this location as I was not one of their happy campers of the night. After I had "chilled" for about a minute I was asked if I had registered. Well...Duhhhhh.......Nope! Nobody told me that I needed to register upon entering and since I later learned I had entered in the back entrance, let's just say I kind of skipped the table.

So, I am now calm and ready to get this caucus thing on the road. I was given the sheet of paper to check for my name for voter registration. Yes, I am a registered voter in the state of Iowa, as I did vote in the last school election, a few months ago. So, there should NOT be a problem. Well, wrong! My name and my husband's names are no where to be found on this form. Now I am informed that I need to reregister as a voter in the state of Iowa- OK, I do get it....I am probably an Independent voter and not on the Republican list. I fill out the paperwork and what's scary to me.....I was not asked for any identification. Now let me just say that I had met these people at this caucus event 10 minutes ago, and I do not know these people running the show here.

7:00 p.m. rolls around. At this point I am wondering how many people have showed up at the "wrong" location and just went back home. All in all a fairly good turnout for three townships, at least I thought so. The Iowa Caucus is now in session. I recall a caucus being a time to share your candidates views, etc. We were given our voting forms and told to vote. I'm thinking to myself.....this is not how I remember a caucus was. We all vote......Votes are ready to be tallied.

The person in charge announces that there has been a mistake, as people were not given the chance to speak on behalf of a candidate of choice. So...after much discussion- the first votes were torn up- by this point, my brain is spinning! Each candidate has their name read and there are people that want to speak for some of the candidates (this is what makes this a grass roots event). So, it's a good thing those original votes were tossed out.

We have great discussion......we vote - again! This time all is good.........The votes are tallied and let me share that in this small group of rural Iowa folks, it's a close race folks. Here's the break down- Romney (8), Paul (8), Gingrich (10), Perry (3), Santorum (9), Bachmann (8). I found these numbers amazing- All very close.........

The lessons I learned while caucusing in Iowa

Next time I will confirm my voter location before I head out, not one week before.
Next time I will make sure I am registered in the party that I want to vote for at least a month before.
Next time I will volunteer to help out at the caucus site. I cannot handle all the disorganization, so I will step up to the plate and help out next time.

So you see, I have a lot of next times- A fun time caucusing in the great state of Iowa! Next time the process will be an event that I actually enjoy! This Mom refuses to accept the disorganization that I experience tonight. I truly understand why people stay home and refuse to participate...So, Next time will be a much better experience for all. 2012 Has Arrived

OK~ It's a New Year- 2012 is here! It's really amazing how fast time goes- Doesn't it seem like yesterday we were ringing in 2011? That magical word called "time" that keeps on going- faster and faster each year. I can recall in the era of the 90's we were all talking about y2k and how things would change.

Now, looking back- things have changed a lot in that time frame. An iPod...We had no idea the word "iPod" when be in our everyday vocabulary in the year 2012. Tablets- Just a few years ago when we mentioned the word tablet, we immediately thought of a 70 page "tablet" with actual paper in it.

Time keeps on marching along- I keep marching along as well. Although, I must say that during the beauty of all of this aging stuff... It's fun to see my nieces and nephews grow up, while I do NOT age one bit! Yikes.....my "baby"- yes, my little boy will be entering the last semester of his Junior year in High School. That to me just seems impossible, but it is what it is! I'm holding on to the little boy in him as long as I can. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

2011- What a Year!

OK~ I'm reflecting on 2011, what a year I have had! This train that I hopped on called Social Media in 2009 has taken me to places that I never imagined I would be going.

I found myself speaking at three conferences and even organizing/hosting one! And this blog...How can I thank each of you for stopping by and sharing what is going on in this Mom's life?! You all rock!!!!

Spring/Summer 2011 was very busy for our family- two bridal showers, two nieces got married, a niece graduated from high school, a nephew graduated from high school and Garrett participated in the Iowa State High School Trapshooting Meet! Now, that doesn't look that busy- but it sure seemed like it at the time.

The people that I have met in Social Media are some of the most motivating and inspiring people that I have ever met in my life. Social Media has shown me that there are still really, really good people in our world today. Did you know that one of my Mom Blogger Friends dyed her hair blue- to raise money for a little girl in her state that is very ill? Through the power of Social Media she raised thousands of dollars and dyed her hair blue!

And the people I have met.....There are so many people that have impacted my life in such a positive way- the list would fill up about 10 blog posts! Amazing, Amazing people- that I'm so glad to have met!

There is so much good in Social Media.....I'm excited to see what's around the corner for me in 2012? Any thoughts? So, for now, I'll kick back with the family and watch the fire crackle away in the fireplace! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Once a Mom...Always Recognized As a Mom

OK~ I'm visiting a local convenience store. The gal at the check-out says, "Aren't you Blaine's Mom?" I respond, "Yes, I am." She then says, "I've known Blaine since he was five." Within two minutes, I now know that this young lady is going to go back to school when she has enough money, works full time, and is glad to have known my son for so many years.

I'm thinking...Wow- I recall when Blaine was two (he'll be 21 in about a month) and I was in a local store. Two kids hollered at me, "Hey, there's Blaine's Mom!" More than 15 years later...I'm still hearing that where ever I go! Yes, I do have a name, but that's irrelevant when you become a Mom. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Three Signs That Christmas Has Come and Gone

OK~ We all had a joyous Christmas at our house..The laughter, love, and fun was really one for the memory books! I've reflected and I know that Christmas is over...

1) My Christmas tree is really bare...There are no packages underneath it. Must be time to pack it away until next year!

2) The Christmas music has left the air waves....But never fear the iPod is loaded for the gym- Christmas Carols can still be played!

3) People are rude! Now, I do understand that the days between Christmas and New Years can be stressful. But seriously, it is NOT ok to demand to move to the front of the line just because you have a return!

I seriously wish people could be nice all year long- there's something about a sense of calm that comes over people on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Why can't we be that way all year long? Christmas is NOT about the stuff....it's all about the birth of baby that we know as Baby Jesus. So, the next time you think it is OK to push your way into a line- think of the Star In The East and the love that came about on that beautiful Christmas Eve.............

And you know what- This is what I love about Christmas- Family is just AWESOME! My sister hosted- We played our annual Bingo game- and the prizes were just as lovely as usual! My Dad was lucky enough to receive the bra clips that had been given to someone the year before- I do wonder where they will end up next year? And then we had a Kinect Tournament- How fun is that? For those of you that are wondering- My nephew who is 5 and me competed against each other- The sensor recognized both of us just fine!

My family and I are truly blessed......Until the calendar says Merry Christmas in 2012......We are moving on to 2012! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ It's seriously the day after Christmas and the stores are really not that busy. Although, I did not find myself in a return or exchange area- that may be the difference. We began our hunt for a new vacuum cleaner, as the one we have is 9 years old and no longer moves properly...So, off to town we go!

It's about lunch time....We are eyeing one of our favorite restaurants- it looks to be crowded (unusual for Monday 12:30 p.m.). But, I must remember this is no ordinary Monday- this is December 26th! So, we decide to shop before we eat.

We do not find our vacuum cleaner of choice (one that will last another 9 years at store #1)! We then cruise back by restaurant #1- the parking lot is STILL packed. So, on to restaurant #2 we go- Parking lot is SWAMPED.

On to store #2- We find a "few" vacuum cleaners. Although, the one that was priced $30.00 less at store #1- is at store #2 and is NOW appealing...So- back to store #1- We purchase the first vacuum cleaner we originally spotted. And since we still in the vicinity of restaurant #1- we check out the parking lot- packed! So.....on to restaurant #2- still crowded- We are thinking- it's now 1:45 p.m. - shouldn't restaurants clear out by then.......We now have the craving for hamburgers....So- we decide to head to Perkins- they have pretty good burgers!

We venture in to Perkins (restaurant #3)- parking lot is not crowded (red flag)- We are seated, handed menus and asked for our drink orders......A few minutes later- our drinks are delivered.....Our waitress (who was doing her job) says, "We are out of steak, hamburgers, turkey, sandwiches, etc"....Now remember- we were headed here because we now wanted burgers! Talk about horrible customer service- Would somebody please tell me why the waitress would not tell us they are basically out of everything due to Christmas BEFORE she gets our drink order? So, by now we have all three taken a sip of pop- I am no longer in the mood to eat at Perkins..............Todd and Garrett get up and I follow. I was unable to locate our waitress to let her know we were leaving, so I handed the store manager our menus and said we would be dining elsewhere...No questions asked!

We get in the truck...Garrett says, "Wow...Talk about a drink and dash!" I'm thinking- #FAIL!!!!! This is not good- but, on the other hand I hope he saw what happens when customers are not given the service they deserve. I honestly don't think we were asking for too much!

Back we go to restaurant #2 (Are you confused by now? I know I still am!). We find a parking place, walk in the door and we are asked for our last name. I say, "How long will that be?" She slowly says, "Ummmm- 5 minutes!" I said, "No thank you, we aren't going to mess around with it!" Our past experience has shown us that when dining in restaurant #2 if you cannot be seated at the door, your service will be very SLOW!

So off to restaurant #4 we go- McDonalds! Who would have thought that hours later, we no longer want hamburgers- So..we order McRibs and Chicken Nuggets- The All American Day After Christmas Meal! Note to Self: DO NOT GO OUT TO EAT THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS NEXT YEAR! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ Two of my boys are watching tv- the oldest one and the youngest one. I made a general announcement- "There is ice cream in the freezer!" That's all it took- just one announcement that there is ice cream in the house - sure got 'em moving! So....if you have a teen and a 40 something year old guy in your home...try it- You just might be able to peel them away from the tv- For about 10 minutes! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Christmas Is A Coming!

OK~ You have your shopping done, presents wrapped? If not...the count down is on! Chances are you will have kiddos in tow the next day or two- So, you are probably kicking yourself as to why you did not finish your shopping while the kids were in school? Due to the fact that we have a "brown" Christmas in Iowa this year- the sleds will remain in storage, the fort building supplies will stay out of sight, and the good thing- you probably don't have to worry about frost bite this year! I'm thinking Rock Band, The XBox Kinect, and wii bowling will be rockin' this house!

Listen to some Christmas tunes, kick back and relax ( if that is possible) and enjoy the music of the season! Oh yeah, and if you are making a turkey for Christmas- you best be getting it OUT of the freezer and into your fridge! Five Positive Ways Facebook Can Impact Your Life

OK~ I've been observing Facebook really, really close the past couple weeks. And you know, I know there are many people now on there that have said, "I'm not gonna have a Facebook Account!" And you know what? They now have a Facebook page......And here's 5 great things that have happened during this time!

A question was asked as to where to find a local listing of the Christmas Eve Services in our community. Within a few moments, a web page was suggested, as well as several invitations to attend Christmas Eve Services.
A new Mom was searching for a new way to soothe her cranky baby.....Voila- Within moments, several posts and an hour later...a post from the new Mom- "Baby is sleeping peacefully, thank you Facebook Friends!"
A friend had several hams and turkeys he wanted to share for Christmas. A post on Facebook and he was connected with families that would enjoy these!
A Mom was looking for a Leap Pad for her daughter for Christmas. She wondered where to find one in our community.....A few minutes later she knew where to go. Saving her a lot of time, with two young girls in tow!
A Grandma was wondering what on earth to get her six year old grand daughter for Christmas. Well, within a few minutes she had a great list of ideas- all thanks to Facebook!

You may ask- "What does this mean? " Well, we now have a Grandma that now knows what six year old little girls want for Christmas, a little girl that will enjoy a Leap Pad, several families that will enjoy meat this Christmas, a content new Mom with her baby, and a family that will be enjoying Christmas Eve services - Thanks to Facebook!

Facebook continues to be a connector for many, and I must say that I have loved the connections that I have made through Facebook. The reconnecting with classmates has been a lot of fun, as well as the ability to connect with so many new people. And I know that if Facebook did not exist, I would not have met a lot of these inspirational people. 2011 is wrapping up and I know that Facebook has had a huge impact on my life this past year, and you? Has Facebook been a connector for you? And yes, my soon to be 21 year old son still refuses to Friend me, but my 16 year old son (Bless his Heart) still continues to Friend me! The Caucus Is Coming

Ok~I did something totally different today, I met Michele Bachmann!

I am not much for involving politics in my blogging world, but had such a fun time, thought I would share. We need to get out to show our support when these candidates cone through our local communities. You know, they do spend a lot of money while campaigning through our state, in our hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and the list goes on and on.....

I am beginning to see the importance of why we should attend these types of events. It's not in every state that people can come this close to a Presidential Candidate, many never come within miles. So...in Iowa, we have the privilege to meet these people face to face, shake their hands, and get to know a little more about them.

It's all about January 3, 2012, in Iowa. The Caucus is coming soon! We Iowans can voice our reasons why we believe our candidate of choice should be the next President, a very grass roots event. It's a process and I'm proud to say that I have been a part of the process the past several years. I figure if I want my little voice to be heard, I need to vote, and get out and participate.

I believe it's about the candidate, not about the party, I believe it's important to support someone that you feel you can relate to and someone that will best represent you. So, I'm still in that beautiful UNDECIDED group..........I will be caucusing January 3- as I am proud to be an American and an Iowan! If you are an Iowan......Get out to the Caucus and show your support! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Cell Phones- Should They Be Banned While Driving?

OK~ I'm pondering how my life will be impacted if I can no longer talk on my cell phone while driving. I do NOT talk on my cell phone while driving with my 16 year old son in the car and I honestly do not think I would be impacted by a ban. I never text while driving- it's just too dangerous and illegal in Iowa.

The sad part of this is the fact that many people think that because texting is illegal- there is a fire in them to do it! Face it, when someone tells you that you can't do something, you often desire to do the opposite. This is especially true with our young people. The worst part of this. There is a law in Iowa that says we cannot text while driving- So, would someone please explain to me why this is not enforced? It never fails.....on a six mile drive into town to the YMCA, I will see at least three people texting on any given day! This is a straight shot on the highway and two stoplights. And the sad part of this, our young people are still dying in car crashes, due to texting!

So, I'm really thinking that we have became so dependent on our cell phones that I honestly do not think we can change! And yes, the older I get, the less I like change! I do not see a need for any new laws- How about enforcing the ones on the books. And yes, I do understand that law enforcement cannot be all places at all times! So...this Mom will continue to drive defensively, and yes, I can tell when there is texter in front of me....The car is weaving and the driver is clearly NOT looking at the road!

Any thoughts? How should we improve on this? I'm not sure what I can do to do my part, except to be extra alert when driving and instill in my 16 year old that is NEVER ok to talk or text while driving- life is too precious! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My Observations Today

OK~ Today was nice....the roads are ice free, the driveway is virtually snow free, and it is December 16th in Iowa. I'm sure snow lovers cannot stand it, but this Mom has no complaints! I observed some interesting things today- Here's my top 3!

The first thing I observed was four cars turning and ONLY 1 out of 4 driver's were on their cell phones. I thought that was pretty good, until Todd mentioned that's 25%- Seems to be all about that crazy word perspective!

The second thing I observed is that teenagers think short, shorts and skimpy skirts are OK to wear to school. It's always interesting sitting outside a high school after the last bell of the day rings.

And #3- I have decided that our dogs do NOT like Christmas- they just cannot get in the spirit!

Wally is not thrilled about the Christmas Spirit, But hey, you know, if I were in his shoes- I would probably not be a happy camper either. Santa hats are meant for Santa, not dogs! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ I am crossing my fingers that I am not the only Mom that has issues with shoes- Check this out!

Yes...We have shoes! I will admit..I do have four pair right in front. Then there is a pair of snow boots, a pair of snow pants, a boot warmer, two pairs of tennis shoes, a pair of work books, a pair of hiking shoes, even a pair of sandals, AND then there is the mud! Yep, we have mud in Iowa. It is December and we have rain- yes, I said rain! The 6" of snow that we had on the ground has turned into mud today! So...I guess I have a floor to mop and shoes to pick up! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

A Fine Day Of Driving

OK~ We are in the car, actually all four of us. The conversation goes like this.

Todd: (Who is sitting in the front passenger seat): "Are you gonna hit that?"

Garrett (Driving): "Maybe!"

Garrett continues on the same path......Bam!

Todd: "Just like your Mother. She never misses a pot hole!"

Now in Garrett's defense, there seem to be pot holes everywhere. Or, is it just this Mom's imagination? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Christmas In The Simple Times

OK~ I'm thinking of Christmas today. Our tree is decorated and there are presents underneath the tree. Due to the fact that our stockings were soaked in the Springtime Iowa rains that came (found them a couple weeks ago) we do not have stockings on the fireplace this year, and so far, there are no complaints. I was thinking of how simple Christmas used to seem to be. Maybe it's because life was different in the 1960's and 1970's...But, were things really that different?

Yep, back in the day I could not wait to receive the Sears Roebuck Christmas Catalog in the mail- that was an exciting day in the house that I grew up in! Now today....kids can Google anything they wish for- all year long. So, we now have Difference #1!

And back in the day Santa was in town for a few days! Now today kids can chat with Santa online and see Santa on many corners in their local communities for several weeks on end. Probably not a bad thing, but it just goes to show how things have changed. We've now nailed down Difference #2!

The presents seemed a lot simpler. I was ten years old and rather delighted to have a doll or even a Barbie doll under the tree. Of course, I enjoyed the three story doll house that also arrived. Today kids as young as five are requesting cell phones and actually receiving them! My brother, sister and I usually received one large family gift and it was often a fun, new electronic device that Radio Shack had recently put into the market place. So, even as a child growing up I did get some pretty cool, up to date presents! Wow.....Difference #3 is a Big one!

As we all contemplate celebrating the birth of Baby Jesus, it's so easy to get caught up in all of this "stuff." Life seemed a lot simpler in my childhood days, but when I really think about it. Christmas is still Christmas- it's all about a little baby. It's not about the "stuff", the stockings, the presents, or even what pattern of wrapping paper is in your home.

I don't know about you...But I really think Christmas used to be a lot simpler. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The hp Photosmart 5510 Printer - User Friendly

OK~ It was time for a new printer in the house once I realized that there are printers in the world today that are wireless, make copies, and even scan from the same machine. The printer we had worked, but I began to realize that there are many things that we could be doing, that we were not. After all, most of us in this house are somewhat tech savvy (Me being the least)!

We opted for a Canon printer, which turned out to be quite the fiasco. The packaging said Mac Compatible, but when we were challenged with it for more than one week, back to the store it went. Who in their right mind has time to re-enter all of the programming information each time someone wants to print something from the computer? Nobody in this house did. We found the packaging to be somewhat misleading and after reading reviews online (which we should have done FIRST) we realized this was a common problem!

So, today we exchanged this printer for an hp PhotoSmart 5510 printer.

And all I can say is WOW! The whole programming feature took maybe 15 minutes, where as the first printer we had purchased was taking days! Hey, looking good. And there are even apps for this printer- yep, even apps for printers- I'm still in awe! Where have I been?

Coupon lovers- this is your thing! I loved the fact that I could touch apps, touch coupons and literally print out coupons in a matter of seconds. When before, I always had issues re-entering information every time I needed to print A coupon! I can't wait to check out all the other exciting apps and features this machine has.

So, after three hours in the house...This Mom has already had a more than pleasant experience with a new printer. I honestly thought that we would not find a printer that would be Mac compatible, affordable, and do lots of things- but hey, we found one! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Your Kids + Sickness +School Attendance = Miserable Kid

OK~ My twitter feed was kind of crazy this morning with tweets about kids being sick and parents needing to send them to school. I will admit, I am a "strict" Mom when it comes to needing to stay home from school. But, when there is vomit, diarrhea, fever, or the inability to keep their eyes open- it's back to bed they go! I'm assuming that schools have became so strict in regards to attendance due to the abuse that schools have received over the years. The big offender in our local school district has been shopping trips, or so I have been told. Once the Mall of America opened (just a two hour drive) our local school district made it known that shopping trips were not excusable school absences. I have never called my boys in to excuse them from school when they were not sick- but I am told I am not part of the so called, "norm!" Oh well, I can live with that!

Here is what parents are saying in the world of social media when it comes to sending their kids to school when they are ill.

1. If your child has a low grade temp, just give them Tylenol, it will mask the fever! What? Now think about it-When you have a fever...Do you feel like paying attention, being around other people, and not being able to sleep when you have a fever?

2. My child cannot afford to miss anymore days of school, they MUST go when they are sick. It appears that schools have the upper hand here. Kids can only miss so many days- even when illness or surgery strikes and parents receive "the letter" in the mail. What happened to people being people?

3. It's only the flu. I don't care if it's the throwing up kind or true influenza, it's still something that spreads fast and miserable for the person that has it. Yep, I've heard this time and time again. So much for all of those dollars spent on all of those public health advertisements. To the best of my knowledge these ads are not cheap and somebody has put a lot of thought into them.

I'm thinking all of this goes back to the pressure that is put on parents and families when it comes to school in the year 2011. The competition is stiff, teachers are frazzled and over worked, and it appears to this Mom that many kids are getting left behind! So, the next time your kid is not feeling well- Will you tell them to "suck it up?" It's true- Your Kids + Sickness + School Attendance = A Miserable Kid! Oh yeah, this Mom has done that- gotten a call from the school nurse a couple hours later, but hey, I tried! After all, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

The Arrival Of The Christmas Tree

OK~ My Christmas Tree has risen-Well...sort of!

My tree moved out of the basement to here. We have a little issue with the tree stand. Our basement seems to have been a little too wet.....So, we will see how that comes out. In the meantime I'm thinking back to the days of a "real" tree. I must admit- I do not miss the vacuuming of pine needles for months after trying to toss the "tired" tree out of the house on December 29th or so! It was always a very stressful time at our house. The tree never fit through the door like it should, one of the boys always stepped on a pine needle, and the memories were never very pleasant!

So...we opted for a "fake" tree. But you know what, I do like my "fake" tree. It's usually very easy to put together and we are not stepping on pine needles for the next six months. And I really miss the days of being able to carry the tree up from the basement to the upstairs. Oh well....life goes on! In due time our family Christmas tree will be up for 2011! But int he meantime, I'm thinking of stringing lights out to this little tree- Your thoughts?

Christmas Cards Or Not....

OK~ There's been a lot of chatter on Facebook lately as to sending out Christmas Cards. I have ran across the following statements:

"It seems like a lot of work when I already know what is going on all because of Facebook." Now, you all know that I love Facebook as much as anyone on the planet, but I still think it's nice to send out a Christmas Card.

"I'm just not in the spirit!" Yes, I can totally relate. I do believe that in 2008, I did not send out any Christmas cards. I just didn't feel like it! I seriously never thought I would feel that way.

"Does anybody really care what my family has been doing?" Yes...Yes...Yes...We do care! I personally love to read what families have been up to the past year~ send me your letter, pictures, cards, etc....I want to see what you've been up to! And you know what- I really don't care if you have already posted the same pic on Facebook....It's wonderful that you took the time to send my family and I a card!

"Why should I send someone a card when they don't send me one?" Yikes...Do we really think this way? Of course we do, we are all busy human beings! Decide how you want to make up your Christmas card list...A great alternative to sending out your Christmas Cards may be to send greetings on the 4th of July- you could start something fun and new! Since most people don't send cards out this time of year, you may feel less stressed...Just a thought! Wouldn't you like to get greeting card from "Sue", in July, that resides in another state?

And it appears that the USPS could use our business...So, it's time to start prepping those Christmas Cards and enjoying the festivities of the season! So...Are you sending out Christmas Cards this year? I will be........and I send to those that have sent to me in the past and those that I really want to stay connected with! And of course, we all have those relatives that we ~~"have"~~ to send to~ it's nice to know that we can make someone else's day. Christmas is all about sharing...So- Send out those cards and know that someone will smile when they receive a Christmas Card from you in 2011! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

My 4-H Days

OK~ We did some re-organizing and rearranging today in the house. Having been married almost 25 years, we have STUFF....Lots of stuff! Garrett was helping Todd carry a box of "stuff" to the basement and Garrett says, "What is in here?" Todd replied, "Stuff!" Garrett says, "Why are we keeping it?" Todd replied , "This is the stop before it heads out the door (meaning 25 more years in a box in the basement)."

And we even found our 4-H record books. I also found some 4-H awards and thought I'd share. I spent a lot of years and hours on many 4-H projects!

And here we go....This was my first official year- 1977. Due to the fact that the club was getting ready to disband, myself and two other girls were allowed to join in 3rd grade. Our first year we were not required to keep record books, we were associate members. So I guess---this is what I was thinking in 4th Grade in 1977!

OK~I really don't get this. I place my order at the drive thru. I am told to pay at window number one, sounds good to me. I pay at window number one and am told to pull ahead to pay at window number two. I get to window number two and the person that was at window number one greets me out of breath saying ,"Hello, how may I help you?" Making My Own Sunshine

OK~ It seems we have many days here in Iowa where we go without seeing Mr. Sun! On these dreary, cloudy days I really strive to make my own sunshine!

First of all- I try to post all positive comments in Social Media (Seems to work for 90% of posts) Face it, there are some posts that just can't be positive- it's life, right?

Secondly- I do get myself away from work for a couple hours....I head to the gym! It's not only good for my mental sanity, but also good for me physically. If you cannot get to the gym, bundle up and walk outside- hey, it's better than not moving at all!

Thirdly- Smile! This should not be hard, but there are times that it can be hard to smile. People will really wonder what you have been up to. But hey, what's wrong with that?

A couple days ago we had went four days with out seeing Mr. Sun and my 16 year old said to me, "Mom, why are you so happy. This weather sucks!" Well, there was some truth to his statement.....the weather did suck..Plain, Simple, and Straight to the Point! But then I thought....Ummmm..I must be doing something right- I had succeeded at making my own sunshine! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Another Letter....Ugghhhh

OK~ Are we the only parents out there that get letters like this? We both dread it when we walk around the wall to enter the kitchen in the morning. If we see something white on the table that resembles this~ we close our eyes and pray really, really hard!We had the Spider letter on June 6, 2011 and NOW THIS.....Ummmm---20 year olds........

Yep...this time one of those little triangle windows was knocked out with a baseball bat or something to that effect. So- from the car tire fiasco about 15 months ago to this ~ this Mom is ready for some quiet with boys and cars....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Yeah- A New Office Chair!

OK~ So you would think that an office chair would be a simple purchase, but not the case when a Mom like me decides on a Sunday morning that her back just can't take her old chair anymore! So, off to the stores we go. Now, I will confess, I did glance online, but thought I should try to patronize a local business. Problem being....Sunday morning 10:00 a.m.- strange- not many stores open, even on this holiday week-end. Weirdly enough, the place we thought would not have an office chair had one that fit our needs and our budget----> Menards had just what we needed!

And there were directions- and according to the boys in this house they are over rated!

And there was stuff!

And then there was an arm here and there!

According to the 16 year old in the house- this chair is gonna rock it!

And the end result....Seriously, when I see this~ I now know why my back hurt and we badly needed a new office chair!

A Simple Way To Eat Leftover Turkey

A few tortilla chips, your favorite cheese and turkey. Microwave for about 40 seconds and you are good to go!

All Of This Shopping This Holiday Week-End

OK~ I hope many of you found that "deal" you were searching for during the wee hours of this morning. I am not looking forward to the fact that I need to visit a grocery store today- poor planning on my part! My sleep and mental sanity (if there is such a thing) are too important to me at this stage of my life.

For those of you that ventured out....Enjoy wrapping all of those presents! It's exiting to see all of the photos of people barging through the doors of the stores and I'm also pleased to see that it appears that people have extra money this holiday season. Early morning reports are showing a great day! I sure hope this is an indication that our economy is making a rebound!

Thanksgiving was wonderful...Not too much leftover turkey, just enough for our family of four! We will not be eating turkey sandwiches for weeks on end, just a couple days. I sure hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are able to focus on the Christmas season! My Christmas cards are ordered and now it's time to focus on getting that Christmas tree up!

Black Friday is sure to be an exciting day for retailers. Remember tomorrow is a day to show your support to your local small business owners- Do you have your day mapped out for tomorrow? Cars Through The Years

OK~ A great discussion today between Garrett, my Brother, and my Mom. Due to the fact that the 1978 Chevy pick-up that I grew up riding in to head out to those bean fields was hauled to the junk yard today, a bittersweet moment it was. I know, those of you that have no clue what a pick-up means to a farm family probably think we are all nuts. I spent many miles in the back cab of that pick-up! It was off to a bean field, or a corn field to pick up rocks. Thinking....34 years! That was a well defined Chevy truck!

And then there was the 1975 Buick Station Wagon...Blue! How lovely it was...My girlfriend, Kim and I spent many hours driving that car around the grain bins in our yard. I know, sounds crazy, but that is where she and I practiced our driving. Garrett, who is 16, kind of said, "What's a station wagon?" Just another sign of the times!

Oh yeah...and my first official car! A 1978 Buick Skylark- Bright, Sunny Yellow~ What a rockin' car that was. It was nice- bright and bold! Sadly, that car met the end of the road when my sister was driving it.

Cars and Trucks...they take us lots of places, but they also provide many years of great memories of life on the Iowa farm! So.....we continue to enjoy "Old Blue" Gotta love that truck- 20+ years and more!

OK~ I'm not a big supporter of all of these energy drinks that have entered the market place in the past few years. Maybe if they would have came on the scene when I was a teen, I may think a little different. Garrett and I are in Menards (yes, Menards- the lumber store) and there is a cooler full of energy drinks at the check-out.

Garrett: "Mom- Can I have one of those?"

Me: Thinking (Ummmmmm- wired kid, but he is 16 1/2 so all should be well) and then I say, "Sure!"

We then proceed through the check-out and head to the car. We get in the car and Garrett opens his drink in a black can. Our conversation then goes like this....

Garrett: "This tastes weird." (I am thinking, this is a good thing!)

Me: I then smell the top of the can and say, "Does it taste like chalk?"

Garrett: "How am I supposed to know what chalk tastes like? And furthermore, Mom- How would YOU KNOW WHAT chalk tastes like?"

Thanksgiving Is Just Around The Corner

OK~ So, another holiday is creeping up on us. Today I've been reflecting on three things that I am very thankful for.

I am thankful that my boys are healthy and able to give me that "eye roll!" Face it, if you have teens or tweens in your home, you know exactly what I am referring to!

Even though the skies are dreary and dark, I am grateful that I am able to drive to the YMCA and exercise. For it was five years ago during the month of November that I was working very, very hard so that I could walk again. I am so thankful for the physical therapists that not only pushed me, but also believed in me!

I am so very grateful for a warm home, roof over my head, and a family that loves me!

Yep~ through the good and bad.....I am thankful for so many people that have inspired me along this journey we refer to as "life!" Through the eye rolls, challenges, and everyday happenings~ I am so blessed......You, my loyal blog readers, make me smile! THANK YOU!!!!!

So, as we celebrate the holiday known as Thanksgiving~ this Mom is going to enjoy the food, smiles, and of course the "eye rolls!" After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Being Thankful Amongst The Chaos

OK~ We all know that life can get pretty chaotic at times! We had one day this past week that an alternator and battery went out of one car. Within 10 hours, our microwave literally blew up and quit working! So, you may ask.....Why am I thankful? Well, I am thankful that my hubby was able make the repairs on our 20 year old son's car. I am also thankful that we had the "old" microwave in the basement and our 16 year old son carried it up the stairs to go back to it's home in the kitchen. Oh yeah, and I'm also thankful that these crazy farm cats are doing their job~ they are catching more than their fare share of mice!

I am also thankful for good health. Sure, this household has had its ups and downs~ but we really are blessed! So many people are posting 30 days of Thanks during the month of November. I did not start that, as I was afraid I would miss a day or two. Although, I must admit, I am enjoying reading what everyone is thankful for! So-----What are you thankful for?

Kids/Teachers/Coaches- When Is This Going To End?

OK~This Mom is just downright frustrated. What is wrong with people today? I am now reading a news story in an Iowa newspaper about a teacher engaging with young girls online, and we are all aware of the scandal that continues to unfold in Pennsylvania. This should be a wake up call to parents.

Throughout the years my boys have been involved in many different activities and I never once swayed away from volunteering my time. These incidents are reasons why parents need to be involved. We all know that we should trust the teacher, trust the coach, as well as the Boy/Girl Scout leader- but let me tell you, the media is telling this mom this is no longer the case. If my boys are taking part in something, I will do my part. I firmly believe that if I do not participate or help to make things better, I have no right to complain. By being involved, I do have a right to complain!

I may have complained that things were overwhelming during my tenure as a Cub Master, and as an Assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts, but I am thankful that I jumped in! With so many parents afraid or not willing to step up to the plate to volunteer, the task can be daunting. If parents would see how important it is to step up and contribute, everyone's job is much easier. If everyone pitches in and does their part, life is good! The friendships I made were priceless and hey, this Mom even became a certified bb gun instructor with The Boy Scouts of America!

Now that my boys are 16 and 20- I can reflect on how thankful I am that I made that decision to become involved. I did not know much about coaching t-ball or soccer- but when no one else would step up to the plate, I willingly took the necessary steps to become trained in coaching these two sports. Attending PTO meetings throughout the years has, and still is, one of the easiest ways to know what is going on in my child's school- I really don't understand why parents do get this concept. I am guessing it is a personal choice.

Now, more than ever before, it is so important to know who your kids are hanging around with, where they are going, what they are doing and we even need to be concerned about who the adults are that are surrounding them! Parents, wake up! Become involved- I know this Mom is grateful for all of the opportunities that have been tossed her way. Helicopter Parenting...that's another story! To Vote...Or Not To Vote

OK~ I really believe that if I want to complain about something in the future, I should exercise my right to vote. Today was a day that I really, really wanted to go vote. But sadly there was nothing for me to vote on today. I will continue to educate myself on the issues when it comes to the economy, education, the state of Iowa, local government, and anything that will impact my life (which happens to be everything around me).

Sometimes I wonder if my little voice really matters. I have to have faith that my little voice will make a difference and know that when I cast my vote- it does matter! So.....the next time you are contemplating to vote, or not to vote~ Just go VOTE! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Driving.......

OK~ Teens know how to drive their parents nuts, as well as literally drive them crazy. But, like it or not.....teens do drive! Yep, here in Iowa they drive cars, tractors, trucks, and atv's. Our boys have been very different in the fact that our oldest one could not wait to get his driver's license, and our youngest one has had to be prodded along.

I truly believe that teens will want to drive in their own time and on their own schedule. But, there does come a time when it's time for parents to intervene. Yup, that's what's happened at this house. We had to get the ball rolling in regards to him obtaining his driver's permit. And now that he's been 16 for six months, it is time to take Driver's Education Classes.

It's so different this time around. Our oldest son could not wait to get behind the wheel and Garrett, he's just so carefree and not a care in the world about it. He knows that just because he completes the class and has his driver's license he does not have to drive all the time. Wow- What a change! I always thought that all boys couldn't wait to get their driver's licenses-I must admit, it's kind of a welcoming change.

In time....Our kids grow up and become their own selves. And it seriously happens in the blink of an eye! So, for now, this Mom is happy that her 16 year old son (baby) is taking the serious approach to driving and enjoying the ride! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Perspective.....

OK~ It's all about perspective. Here in Iowa, we will have loads of white, fluffy, sloppy snow to tromp around in this coming Winter. In Florida, people will possibly endure 30 something degree temps and rain. I've always wondered if people in the so called warmer climates change their wardrobes during Winter.

I am learning...they do! Having lived in Iowa all of my life...when I think of sweaters- I see wind, cold, snow, and boots! I guess I need to get out more...I learned this past week that people in the so called warmer climates do wear boots and sweaters. It seems kind of strange to this Iowa Mom that snow boots would need to be worn in these warmer climates- but, I get it...It's about fashion and making sure to keep those feet warm!

Well- it's all about perspective! In this Mom's eyes...Winter is 0 degrees with 30 below wind chills and lots of snow! And yes, I buy snow boots to keep my feet warm and dry! Maybe, just maybe someday I will be able to buy a pair of snow boots strictly for fashion. But, for now...It's all about perspective- I will endure Winter and pray that I can "retire" to the South someday! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

News, Gadgets, and The Like...How They Are A Changing

OK~ It was just a few years ago when 99.9% of us had house phones and maybe a cell phone to travel with for emergency use. And fast forward to today....Many of us no longer talk on a house phone, as we use our cell phones for everything~ even to read the news!

Now today we see "Like Us On Facebook.......Follow Us On Twitter! Again, time has evolved. Many people use Facebook to get the days news, find out about a business- Facebook is literally ONE huge massive book of Yellow Pages! I am happy to say that I consider Facebook and Twitter to not only be a great way to stay connected with others, but it's a GREAT book of yellow pages! I am not a patient person...I can click and see what a business has to offer in a matter of seconds~ I like that!

My age is showing. I can remember the days of a typewriter (an actual typewriter with a ribbon) with several sheets of white paper, with carbon in between them (Can you still buy that stuff?) and after a matter of NOT making an error (Spellcheck is unheard of) a person may have had a nice looking group of papers to pass out to someone. I can't wait for the day in rural America when we will have high speed internet, as that will really make my job nice!

Just today- My Mom and I were talking about how we had heard about a local town having a week-end of Welcome To The Holidays in their shops. We ventured to this Iowa town, as we had seen all about it on Facebook! It's not just young teens using Facebook...It's a place of updated news ( locally and nationally) and a place to stay connected. One has to think, "Where will we be in 10 more years?" It kind of scares me, but I will roll right along with it! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ I'm hearing the words hometown quite a bit lately. My hometown happens to be Mason City, Iowa. And I'm pleased to share THREE things that make this community a great place to visit and raise a family!

I may complain when I sit at a stop light and there are ten cars present. But, in reality, these ten cars are much better than the hundreds that may be present at an intersection in a large city.

Living in the country, we enjoy the peacefulness that we endure when we step outside. Mason City happens to have several parks that are family friendly 365 days of the year. From a dip into the local swimming pool to coasting down the sledding hill; our parks are full of activities for families.

The Historic Park Inn Hotel recently opened! This hotel is the last hotel in the whole world that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1910. This hotel has been restored after a complete renovation and is open for guests!

Here is the view when you step through the main doors of the hotel! Our whole community prides itself on the renovation of this historical hotel, isn't it beautiful? If you are an architect buff, this hotel is for you! So, I'd have to say my local town is a little unique in the fact that it has the LAST hotel in the whole world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright~ pretty cool, huh? The Saga Of The Books....

OK~ Garrett comes home from school today. "Mom, these books need to go back to the public library." I say, "OK." I did recall that he had taken a little field trip to the public library, a few weeks ago, so the red flags didn't go up too fast. Seems kind of odd that our high school library would not carry books about John Dillinger..but, that's a whole other saga.

Garrett thens says, "Oh yeah, they were due yesterday!" Ok....to the car and to town I go. I was SO OVERLY joyed that these books were only one day late~ unbelievable. This is the same kid that would bury any/all books in the bottom of his locker until the end of the school year. So- this Mom is doing a happy dance! Only one day late~ Major, Major Maturity~ this Mom is happy, happy! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Home Grown Gifts- Cedar Antler- Clarinda, Iowa

OK~ The holidays are just around the corner, as much as I really, really dislike facing up to that fact. I found some really cute, fun, and unique wood working ideas from an Iowa vendor in our local mall a couple week-ends ago.

Now, this WELCOME sign is looking mighty fine in the home of my parents. The cool thing about these products is the fact that they are made out of lumber from the trees in Iowa. Now that to me, is natural and very local!

A nice selection of decor for your home or business. Brandon and Michelle Moon are the proprietors of CedarAntler and they reside in Clarinda, Iowa. The two of them together, are not only creative, but also very proud of their business. They pride themselves on Hand Made Crafts from Native Sawn Lumber. I happen to love the fact that these folks are hard working and using their hands to make these beautiful products!

Cedar wood is used in many of their items, with a lot of character to boot. So, if you are looking for something made with the hands, made in Iowa, and produced out of homegrown Iowa trees; you need to get in touch with these folks~They probably have something for that someone on your gift list, or something for you to add a little "oomph" to your home. Oh yeah, and I must add- Brandon even makes beautiful antler chandeliers. Now, there's an idea for your Dining Room! Video Rentals

OK~ I'm always ready for a pleasant surprise. I can't tell you how many times I have cringed at some of the video games that have been rented in this house~ Ugghhh....teenage boys and blood/guns/ and violence. I am thinking those wicked games have ran there course. We went to rent a video game tonight and my 16 year old son chose a Child rated game! Woo Hoo! This Mom is doing a happy dance. He's happy, I'm happy. All is well in this house tonight..After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Books- Past, Present And Future

OK~We've all got books laying around! How do you keep all of those books under control? I will say that I have really appreciated my Nook. I no longer have that tall pile of books next to my bed. I honestly thought I would miss the feel of paper in my hands, but that is not the case. I like having my Nook loaded up and ready to go at anytime.

I'm not so sure that I like the thought of books being non-existant. I think of the jobs that are lost and the feel of an actual book in my hands. I still like to be able to pick up a book and read it. But, in the grand scheme of things, many books are sure to go by the wayside.

We have became a society full of abundant technology, which I have learned to embrace. Our 16 year old son, has never really enjoyed reading- until now. His 11th Grade English class was fortunate to have two teachers that went out to community organizations presenting the students needs for Kindles to the organizations. And you know what? We are blessed....His class has a Kindle for each student. The Kindle stays in the classroom and he enjoys reading now. So, I have to say technology has been a blessing to this family when it comes to a 16 year old boy and reading.

What's your thoughts on books? Do you think we will see fewer actual books laying around? This Mom will keep her eye on those books- maybe through the eyes of her Nook. After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Parents + Kids = Volunteerism

OK~I'm thinking today~ and I do NOT necessarily think that thinking is always a good thing, but it usually is! The activities our two boys have been and continue to be involved in, have always involved the parents in one form/shape or another. What's been so interesting over the years is that the same people are involved in the scouting events, the church events, the team events......Our youngest son completed Cub Scouting more than five years ago and I just recently learned that the Cub Scout Pack has struggled, been non-existent for a period of time, and continues on the brink of collapsing. How sad is that? When we were involved in this pack, there were several active adults ( who were also at the church activities and other happenings in the community) that were involved in the pack. Cub Scouting takes a load of volunteers to make things happen!

So.....what I am observing, is contrary to what I am hearing from the media. I am hearing that volunteerism is up~ But where? People.... Parents- Our kids are the future! Be involved in the activities your kids are participating in. No, this does not give you permission to be a helicopter parent, but permission to become involved. The last PTO meeting at our local school- 7-12 Graders- Close to (under) 20 people in attendance with 1/2 being school employees. This are just ONE Mom's observation...

Oh yeah...and the cookie cut-out fundraiser for my son's trapshooting team. Guess what? It's the same people, same parents, same kids that have signed up to help. Now, I honestly have no clue as to what is so difficult to stand at a table and place frozen cookies in the hands of people. Do you see a trend here? I'm beginning to think that those of us that are involved are enabling these other parents....I'm thinking that other parents seem to think that oh, "So and so will do it."

My thoughts continue...I'm still searching for the answer in regards to all of these people volunteering. Don't get me wrong~ There are many people that I know that are volunteering, making a difference in the lives of our kids. But, people~ let's not burn them out! Step up to the plate and take your turn~ it's really not that hard and you will meet new people, while making a difference in the life of a young person!

For now...This Mom will continue to Think.... My Motto: If you are NOT involved- Do NOT complain~After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ I'm really almost speechless. My 16 year old son just says to me, "Mom? What can you get when a wild mouse bites you on the hand?" I am not asking details...I do NOT need to know details....I am not sure that I want to reside under the same roof~ teens, mice, and all of this fun! Living in the country in Iowa definitely has its perks, but wild mice? After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Naming Farm Kittens- It's Not An Easy Task!

OK~ What is wrong with this picture? Our kittens now have names- Cartman, Butters, Stan, Kyle & Kenny. Well, I must confess~ Kenny is no longer with us~ I'm just going to state that my car tire met up with him and I have no further comment on Kenny. When farm kittens are born the first part of August in Iowa, these warm days in October are a blessing to them. Here's three of the four that are left.

Naming these kittens was just not happening~ I'm thinking that my 16 year old has watched a few too many Southpark shows. When my boys (hubby included) told me the names of the kittens, I asked, "Who?" Well, it's rather obvious who does NOT get into Southpark at this house. Maybe it's best that I don't watch.....These farm cats are wonderful when it comes to catching those pesky mice~ and yes, it is that season~AGAIN! Lucky for Cartman, Butters, Stan & Kyle~we have been blessed with warm weather the past few days! Next time..this Mom is naming new kittens as soon as possible....After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Community~ A Word We Hear About A Lot

OK~ I seriously think the word community seems to be popping up everywhere. I see community in Twitter, on Facebook, on Google Plus AND I even hear about it when I turn on the radio. It's not all bad, but I am wondering if it's a phrase we are all running with.

I am blessed to have a community of Faith Friends, Classmates, Facebook Friends, Twitter Followers, Trapshooting Parent Friends, Iowa Friends, Blogger Friends, and my list seriously continues on and on. When I started thinking about "my" community......I began to realize how blessed I truly am.

My family should probably be the top list in my community~ but, does a family have to be labeled? I'm choosing not to label it. So, there ya go! A community is wonderful to be a part of and I am thankful for everyone that I have connected with in all of the communities I have passed through! I'm thinking that the key is to realize that you are a part of a community~ embrace it and accept it! By accepting a "new to you" community~ the sky is truly your limit! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Age......

OK~ Age....It took my five year old nephew to put the age thing into perspective.

I made the comment, "I can't do that, I am an old lady!"

My five year old nephew, "I am an old boy. I am going to be 6!"

How cute is that? This sweet, little boy reminded me that I need to be thankful that I am able to celebrate another birthday and I need to remember how grateful I am. Each day we are given, is truly a gift from God! Another little blessing in my day~ A sweet one, that is for sure! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Time....

OK~ Here is why my time AND yours is important:

My family needs me- There are meals to be prepared, laundry to be washed, and just the general day to day activities of running a household.

A dollar is a dollar- The dentist and doctor's office are busy places. Therefore, if I am running late or not going to be able to make my appointment, I call the office. I want to be sure my running late won't interfere with other patients and if I need to reschedule~ I will reschedule the appointment.

My son's teacher is busy enough~ Therefore if I have a meeting scheduled with his teacher, I attend or let the teacher know I need to reschedule.

So, what seems so difficult about this? Common sense seems to have been tossed out the window. I have been told by several teachers, doctors, moms, and dentists that they don't think others value their time! So.....this is a wake up call to all of us! If you can't make it on time......Use common sense and make that telephone call.

My time is valuable, your time is valuable...So, let's work together and bring TIME back to the common sense in our daily lives. How do you value your time and the time of others? I will keep doing what I am doing.....an occasional eye roll at the doctor's office (people just don't get it) and this Mom is good to go. Oh yeah, and that privacy issue in the medical field~ it's always interesting how I can hear what each patient is there for, how much their bill is~ makes no sense to me. But then again, I am just a Mom.

It always amazes me that a Mom will take the time to argue with a receptionist at an office....Geeshe..take a chill pill people! It's all about my time and your time~ Bring some common sense into your time~ we would all be a little happier! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

OK~ Haven't we been hearing about this next U.S. election for the past two years? Debate after debate...and I will tell you this. I do love my country, and I do care...but I am really, really tired of these political leaders campaigning year after year. Just for once, I'd love to see them do their job and not campaign. Through the eyes of my 16 year old..."Mom, they all say what they think people want to hear." I had no comment, but was left with a thought for the next year. Politics, you gotta love to hate 'em! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Teens, School and Faith~ Yep, They Are Connected

OK~ My 16 year old son and I just had an honest discussion about his elementary school days. His comment to me, "The only teachers that ever really helped me with my reading were the ones that taught Special Education." This Mom is thinking- this is interesting. He then proceeds to say, "I think all teachers should know how to teach all kids how to read. They shouldn't be able to just hand a kid a book and expect them to know how to read it." WOW--------------- Yep, out of the mouth of a 16 year old boy.

Garrett has been pondering what he wants to do after he graduates, as he is 16 years old and he is in 11th Grade. He honestly has no clue what he wants to do. Yet, society expects that he should know what he wants to do the rest of his life. I know many people in their 40's ( my age is showing) that still don't know what they want to be when they grow up! It's all about life......it would be so simple if we all knew our destination, etc....

You know, the one thing that we can all depend on is our Faith.......I have faith that he will make good choices and figure out his destination after high school, with the Good Lord walking beside him. It is through my faith that I continue to make it through each day~ Geeesshhheee...and I thought the toddler years were tough...These teen and young adult years are not any walk in the park either! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Laundry~ There Is Something To Be Learned From The Laundry Pile

OK~ I'm drudging through the pile of clothes in my 16 year old son's room, pondering the thought of what is crawling under all of those clothes. There are not only dirty clothes on the floor, but clean clothes, as well. So, how does a boy know what is clean and what is not? Or, is this Mom just concerned about nothing? He does wear clothes and he smells OK (Thank God for Axe). Ahhh....to be young and carefree! Laundry, maybe life would be a whole lot simpler if I just let it lay. Seems to me there is much to be learned from this 16 year old boy! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?

Halloween In The Simple Times

OK~ I'm cruising through the store the other day...it really just seems like the 4th of July Decorations were out on display. Now the Halloween costumes and candy...did I say candy? There is candy everywhere in the stores! Now, growing up I was fortunate enough to have a mask for a Halloween Costume. My brother, sister and I really never understood the concept of wearing face paint, or sporting an elaborate costume on Halloween Night. Living in the country, we did NOT go door to door Trick or Treating. Our parents took us to the neighbors home, a little under a mile down the road and to both of our Grandmother's homes. One was next door and the other was about 30 miles away. That was it.....

It took us many years to comprehend the stories that our classmates had of pillow cases full of candy. I don't feel that we led a sheltered life, as we did not feel like we missed out on a whole lot. Although, we did think a pillow case full of candy was pretty cool! And I am sure a lot of these kids were a dentist's dream!

Fast forward several years.....My boys did not have so called elaborate costumes. We did buy them costumes ( The Batman Costume we purchased was worn for more than 8 years between the two boys) and we did take them to more homes than we visited as kids. And NO, they did not carry a pillowcase! They each carried a little pumpkin bucket AND when and if - the bucket was full- it was time to go home!

Halloween seemed a lot more simple back then- I know, my age is showing. But in all honesty, can families afford all that our society expects out of Halloween in today's economic times? The decorations are not cheap, the candy is not cheap, and the costumes...you could spend an arm and a leg if you wanted too! I hope many families opt for the simple costumes, enjoy the Halloween Season and set limits when it comes to all of that candy!

My shoe of choice was the Patagonia Better Clog Boot in Deep Espresso. The full grain leather upper was a very nice feature. My feet felt right at home while wearing these clog boots. The glove-like leather lining felt just like an old, worn glove on my feet.

They were also fairly easy to get on and off. Keeping in mind that my right foot is dropped and does not have full movement, I was able to get these on and off fairly easily. The zipper was very easy to use and it moved just like any zipper should. I also got to try these in the rain, and I am happy to say that the traction was very good. So, I can safely state that when Old Man Winter appears here in Iowa, these boots will be ready to tackle the precipitation that Mother Nature will be sure to lend us.

Closed........A Typical Sign When Traveling in October

OK~ Traveling in the Mid-West in October is an adventure. The Fall colors are everywhere, and traffic is not a problem. The +'s definitely outweighed the -'s on our latest little get-a-way to Door County in Wisconsin. There were obviously not too many screaming kids, although; there were a few here and there. You know, I really don't wish to go back to those days!

We enjoy lighthouses, as they are not something we see very often in Iowa. So, we decided that we would check out the Sherwood Point Light House located near Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. After meandering through the countryside, with less than well marked roads...We arrived at our destination to find this!

No Trespassing....Now, this might as well said, "CLOSED." We saw those words a lot during the time we traveled through Door County. It would be nice if the Wisconsin Tourism Department listed this in their travel information. Maybe we just picked up an "old" pamphlet at the visitor center when we crossed into Wisconsin. We were able to pick up a 2010 road map, so maybe this was just recently closed, as well. On the + side, we could take a pic!

If we would have known that this was not a site that tourists or visitors were welcomed at, we would not have meandered through the country side to find this. We should have known, when the sign off the main road was a painted, white, wooden arrow, nailed to a tree that said "Lighthouse." Usually places that are welcoming to visitors have clear directions, etc.....

Oh well, I can say that I visited the Sherwood Point Lighthouse. It looks interesting from the small parking area. It also looks like it is somewhat maintained. Lesson learned- it's probably a good idea to check with the local visitor center of the community you are visiting before you venture to a site.

The Fall colors were beautiful on Washington Island and Door County itself was beautiful. No traffic and the fact that there were no lines anywhere was just what this Mom needed! After All, It's All In a Mom's Day, Right?
